Now it could just be the fact that I haven't done much research, and while I really like most everything I've read so far, there seems to be one key element (at least for me) missing.
That would be a consequence for dying. I prefer MMO's that are designed more like real life where it is more important to make sure you win the fight and live to tell the tale. (A la EVE)
Even DAOC had penalties for dying including a loss of stats which had to be restored for a small, but still consequential amount of gold. You also were penalized by being kept out of the fight for a period of time (anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes) and I'm not really seeing any mention of mechanics like this.
My concern is the PVP in GW2 is going to be mostly fight, fight, fight which I'm not much a fan of.
The above and add to that the lack of a seamless open world like Azeroth.
Hopping through 5 portals and 5 loading graphics screens to go from the Barrens to Tanaris (sorry just using names you all know) is NOT exactly the game I am waiting for.
Seamless world background loading is standard in the biggest MMO club these days and pretty much standard of what I expect from a new MMORPG of a so called NEW generation in which EXPLORING takes place.
You might as well install and load up Call of Duty Maps if you are pleased with these techniques.
It is a regression of 7 years and counting. I am not against the use of an alternative route of fast travel, but having a loading screen as the ONLY option to jump from one point to another is kind of ... lazy programming.
Not even talking about the absence of fast transportation like ... horses.
Nah this game is just in its hype up phase. Every game that is unpublished is the best one, everyone knows that by now.
Hmmm...regression of 7 years, huh? Okay, name off all the MMOs that offer a seamless world without the need for loading screens. Bear in mind, WoW is 7-8 years old running on the most current hardware, which certainly doesn't hurt its ability to be seamless.
Blizzard already evolved : they deleted the zoning, they added real 3D in Azerorth. You can freely fly over 10 - 25 zones per continent and go anywhere.
Now I am not saying they need to include flying etc, but the fact they go to loading screens instead of a seamless open world is a clear regression.
We ARE talking about a NEW generation of mmorpg and the first thing you see is "loading screens" to go anywhere.
Sorry but that's a huge bummer for the NEW generation. Combine it with the fight, fight, fight condition we talked about above and you see it is more than a trivial fact...
If a game has fast travel by design, then it's going to need to load new zones when you teleport to a new zone anyway. Any game would. It's been a while since I played WoW but you've still got zones when you switch continents or hearth or enter an instance.
Since GW2 has fast travel, you're only going to ever cross to a new zone on foot one time before you would just fast travel there every time thereafter. So I fail to see what a huge dealbreaker it would be.
GW2 is also employing the brand new concept of overflow servers for when a zone or even an entire server is full, you can temporarily play on another server. This allows everyone to play without compromising the experience for anyone with excessive lag. That kind of server structure would almost certainly prevent a seamless transition.
They're not bad programmers who are regressing, they're pushing the genre further than it's ever been.

The thing that jumps out to me the most is that developers always say their game is 'different'. It seems that, as confirmed by this weekend, Guild Wars 2 actually is.
Exactly how I feel.
I won't jump to any conclusions but I can say that I wait with baited breath
SO you guys actually played it, or did you read it in an article?
Many of us have at gamecons and such. Do some research, you'll find out how it's different from the norm. No trinity, no traditional 'questing', no endgame raids, no gear grind, no PvE requirements to participate in PvP, etc...I could go on. It's quite obvious that it's different. The only real question is how that will be received by gamers when it launches.
i have read ALL about it in the last weeks m8......and to every article i see they say it will be like the next freaking jesus comming to save us all.
Well, it sounds a little TOO perfect for me......the movies i have seen look great and all and i have no doubt that it will be a good game but i just want to hear it from the everyday (sceptical) gamer what the game is REALY about......with all its good sides AND bad sides so i can decide if i am going to play it or not.
by no traditional questing you mean: getting your quest automaticly instead of from an NPC just like WAR and Rift did......yeah yeah but in GW it will be all bigger and better right.....i hope so.

standard of what I expect from a new MMORPG of a so called NEW generation in which EXPLORING takes place.
I played both WoW and GW1.
One had a seamless open world with mount travel, the other had an instanced world seperated by portals and instant travel.
If there's one thing i remember from both games, it's that i've pretty much seen every single place in WoW by now, there's nothing left to discover.
But in GW1, i completed all 3 games + the expansion, and i've probably only seen about 40-50% of the total game world. Fast travel allows you to travel to places instantly when you need it, but also "saves" the exploration for when you actually feel like exploring.
It may sound weird i know. But what i mean is, because you'll mostly be instantly teleporting around the world, you'll mostly won't be seeing lots of places. So if you actually feel like exploring, you basically still have the whole world left to explore.
Whereas in WoW, you've pretty much seen all those hidden places already, because you always see them while, for example, taking a gryphon, or running to a different zone.
Also, no mounts add A LOT to exploring, because you won't be zooming past every mob. For example, if there's a tough group of mobs in front of you, with a mount you can just run past them and avoid them. But without a mount, you'll want to find a way around them to avoid them.
Also, if you're worried about exploration in this game, i'll quote this from the beta preview on this site:
"I’ll end this section with one very important note: exploring is very key to Guild Wars 2. Sick of being too handheld in recent MMOs? Don’t worry. GW2 will give you some very basic areas to look for (provided you ask one of the game’s “scouts”, but beyond that it will be up to you to find adventure, to find people in need of a hand. The scouts (denoted on the map by a spyglass) will give you some of the surrounding area’s major event locations, but as you tend to them you’ll undoubtedly stumble upon others like breadcrumbs leading you to locations that don’t have a label. One such example is the Shaman Rookery in the starting zone for the Norn. It’s a dank and dark cave, filled with extremely difficulty encounters and platforming tasks that will drive you mad as enemies and crows knock you to the base of the cave and force you to start from the beginning. You won’t know what’s at the end of the trial, but you’ll be damned sure to keep trying to defeat the shamans and jump from platform to platform to see what prize awaits you. Areas like this, among so many others, will make explorers’ dreams come true."

Bro, you and I are in the exact same boat, I assure you. I've been playing MMOs for 10 years and have gotten duped a few times. I'm just going off of what I KNOW about GW2, that's all. We won't really know for sure until we're actually playing it.
Its milked out to the bone ine ach genre and alot of creators of mmo's are just doing a bad job on alot of levels.
I can say this about GW2:
This game set a new standard , each mmo that comes out needs to be of the same quality GW2 is or else you get the same shit as WoW / Aion / Warhammer / SWTOR.
We have been playing these mmo's for the longest time and yet i still stand in a major hub spamming, LF Tank and LF healer.
I dont want to spend my precious free time doing that for 30 minutes.
I work 8 hours a day + i got a wife and 3 kids, spending my time gaming is my hobby, spamming general chats in mmo's is a thing from the past.
And lets check out their vieuw on playing a game:
How many times ive been into a dungeon for the 15th time to get a specific drop....and some retard need it when he cant even use it.
Or mining nodes and some people (steal) it away due to a faster mount or faster running speed.
Most mmo's have horrible PvP...as they say they focus on it, but its just bullocks as they created it as an after tought becuase people demand pvp in their current mmo's
But SWTOR for example just plain suck with pvp.
Apart from the bolster effect its just bad.
Looking at Arenanet and PvP i was amazed, mass scale pvp in forms of wvwvw and battlegrounds + world pvp...+ a spectator vieuw, (been asking this in wow for 5/4 years lol)
Anet love's details and it seems to reflect their love for the game to the players.
And all this love comes without a sub.....
Makes you think what the hell we payed and played before :P
GW2 is going to be the new standard anything else is not going to sell anymore.
Why would you eat shit and pay for it ? when you can just buy GW2 and eat out of a 4 star restorant ? <--spelling i know !
And yes the PRESS is going to be positive about GW2 as they should, if this game fails then what else will have succes ?
You will get more and more Warhammers / Aions / SWTOR's for more and more years to come.
I would give GW2 a solid 10+ just to show what direction mmo's needs to be going.
No more wow clone's and ripofs badly designed.
I bought SWTOR here in the netherlands, i needed to buy a 2 month sub card for 28 euro + 60 euro for the game....times 2 as i wanted to play with my son and wife.
Needed to pay around 170 euro for a shit game without the posibility for a refund.
Whats that around 250 dollars ? 300 dollar ?
I regret i bought it but i knew it before hand just like warhammer and Aion.
Ive not played GW2 before, but when just looking at the released footage i already know this game is going to sell by the millions.
If not then it would be a total failure fromt he mmo community's.
Why would you not support a new stepping stone in the history of mmo's
/ the end.
became a long post for the few words i wanted to say

I don't think it is that easy to get over this "buthurt feeling" for 6 years in a row now.
If it comes to a point where the voiced concerns about lack of a seamless open world is just brushed under the door mat, as if it were just some trivial thing, I get it.

"No discussions allowed in pre release Beta".
Where did I hear this before ???
Wait until it is beta, my favourite time :
"Omg, it's beta!!! Don't you know what that is!! All this will be fixed on release!" Every year without fail, you can set your watch by the lack of hindsight

Same will happen to TSW
Yep.
And ArcheAge.
I think Rift was the most recent one, it has this revolutionary skill system, dynamic events, etc, etc.
So having no seamless open world may not be critized because I am in Azeroth and not allowed to play other games ?
Pretty much confirms the upcoming Beta play feedback. Keep it up.
It may be critized. I critized it a lot in the GW2Guru forums aswell. But you're obviously here only to bring the game down. You have no intention to like this game. I've also posted a response to your claim about lack of exploration in GW2, but you're either ignoring it or just haven't read it yet.
Don't pretend to be some innocent victim who only tries to give positive feedback to the game, because you're not.
I think the most enjoyable thing about GW2 in these forums is the fact that all the SWTOR fans used to respond to all criticism of that game with 'you just hate themeparks', or 'your a burnout, it's you not them'.
But...
Those same folks, the 'themepark haters' and 'burnouts', are from what I see just plain excited for GW2...
I guess we all didn't 'hate' themeparks... we just didn't like badly done themeparks.

It just gets me down, i always look at both sides of the coin, as i like to discuss games i may want to play. Pure praise and idolation helps no one, the same as pure criticism. This thread literally has sex with GW2 before anyone has even played it, based on what the devs have said. Funnily enough, i don't think they will discuss what the game lacks. Every damn new release it's the same though, no balanced discussion, so some poor **** has to buy the game to find out himself, as no one is honest or unbiased enough to give a real opinion.

Honest review and opinions doesn't matter much i think, because if a critic dare gives positive review to the game you dislike he has to be paid by the company..but as long it is your favorite game too, critics are ofcourse honest.
I trust only my own and no one else's opinions these days.
Had all the butt hurts from previous MMO's, Warhammer, FFXIV and recently SWtor, GW2 will be last one for me, I guess I should be thankful some people here have had it worse, MO, Aion, AoC, SWG. Thankfully my wallet is tighter than a ducks ass and my butt isnt as sore as some peoples.

Is this helpful or constructive in any way, Vesavius? I find it offensive and simply unnecessary. I'm a huge TOR fan who has never resorted to that type of kneejerk cretinism; I'm positive that there are many more TOR fans that are the same as me. We don't deserve the maligning any more than anyone else painted with a too broad brush.
Just to add for good measure, I'm excited about GW2 also. Though some seem to forbid it, I will be defiantly playing it and TOR.

That's the thing with most of the people who are skeptical about reviews though. Every positive review (wether it's press or players) they read, they'll automatically consider it to be made by a fanboy, or that they got paid for it.
But as soon as they see a negative review (wether it's press or players) they suddenly claim how it's a very honest review made by an unbiased gamer. And that everything he said is the truth.
People tend to only look at the bad reviews and ignore the good ones, because apparantly bad reviews are the only reviews.
Have you considered that people who write positive reviews about a game, may sometimes be actually telling the truth?

What you are talking about is very subjective. I think Vanguard and FFXIV are bad but dose it mean my opinion is universal truth? nope.
If i go by biased opinions on this website there is not a single MMO worth playing other than GW2...but is that true? certainly not. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm not exactly sure what the downsides could be really. We know crafting is fairly average, but that's about it really. We've seen every single main mechanic in the game now with the vast amount of footage available. If there was something to moan about, we'd have seen it. The press didn't have any real restrictions on the NDA at all. Plus, some of us have played the game at conventions y'know
There's 100's if not thousands of hours of gameplay out there. Sure, most of it is terrible players who stand still spamming 1 because WoW forced them to do that for so long (and because it's early game, GW2 only slightly smacks them around). Nothing is being hidden for GW2. That's what's so special. We know what it's all about.
GW2 was shaping up to be living up to it's hype in 2010, it's definitely doing so today. Arenanet haven't promised a single thing they haven't delivered. That's what's set GW2 apart. They simply told us what the game IS, not what they want it to be There's a reason why even this forum, one rife with MMO trolls constantly attacking GW2 to defend ToR/TERA ect. the trolls have subsided.
I personally look for criticism in any game or any product for that matter, rather than praise.
Here's why:
I generally know what my expectations are of a game, hence why i am looking into it, so i know what it's advertised features are.
What isn't advertised are its faults. I do it with books too. I glance over the 5 star ratings, but what are most revealing are the 2 star ratings. If the criticisms are personal, you can overlook them and make a balanced judgement, but if they give a solid reason, then you have to review your choice.
That is why i am strongly opposed to 100% praise, where discussion isn't allowed, it doesn't help someone decide if they should try the game.
Hence why i haven't praised anything about The Secret World other than the skill system looks different. I have no idea about its long-term appeal or depth, as it's impossible to know. I just know it's worth a sample, as it is an unknown quantity.
I think the most enjoyable thing about GW2 in these forums is the fact that all the SWTOR fans used to respond to all criticism of that game with 'you just hate themeparks', or 'your a burnout, it's you not them'.

This game IS the MMO we've been waiting for.
So much conjecture, wishful thinking, assumptions in one post. It is like a clockwork before every new MMO release.
If it comes to a point where the voiced concerns about lack of a seamless open world is just brushed under the door mat, as if it were just some trivial thing, I get it....
Specific concerns are what they are. You want a big, open world. Nothing wrong with that. Guess we'll just have to see how big the zones are.

I would say that it seems to be the ThemePark MMO a lot of you have been waiting for because it is definetely ThemePark and not free form sandbox one.
That being said I will for sure play and enjoy the game but my main MMO will be ArcheAge because it is atleast a hybrid sandbox.

Sorroe, Human Mesmer
Jade Quarry Server
There wont by any mmo that reinvent the wheel.
Time will tell.......so people who have actually played it plz make a review as it should.......mmorpg.com staff are just going sell another game cause their boss says so.....no offense to these people doing their job tough. (but their reviews dont count for me).
It is always good to be cautious. Nothing bad with it and no it doesn't make people butthurt by MMO devs..before...you know what you said.
Almost every MMo released since WOW.
And (chronologically) Tera, Rift, Aion, Warhammer, i'm sure there's more, but those ones in recent memory of a similar situations.
This game IS the MMO we've been waiting for.
So much conjecture, wishful thinking, assumptions in one post. It is like a clockwork before every new MMO release.
Specific concerns are what they are. You want a big, open world. Nothing wrong with that. Guess we'll just have to see how big the zones are.
