This game has no world pvp?

I've looked all over and cannot really find an exact answer to this.

I've seen this "WvWvW" stuff, but that still looks instanced to me.

I'm talking about open world pvp. I'm guessing guild wars 2 doesn't have it?

If not, I'll probably pass on this one.. tired of instanced PVP games.

Well, they don't have open world pvp, but they do have a very large zone called the mists that is open pvp within that zone.

There's no PvP in the PvE enviroment.

I just took a fast look and there are many manyyy games that provide what you're asking for...

Archage, Aion, Warhammer, Mortal, Darkfall, WoW, Swtor, etc, etc...

There is instanced PvP ala battlegrounds for quick 15-20mins. Then theres a WvWvW which is persistant for about 2weeks. Theres several keeps and a few large castles to fight over. Theyre all on one 'map' meaning you can run to and fro each keep/castle. But no, you can run up into a bunch of pve players and gank them. Sorry.

Great announcement, now you can pass it.

The game is pretty much revealed, nothing is hidden. With some research i guess you can decide if it fits  you or not.

Not much more to tell. I got tired of these things. You have eyes and you can see what offers you and what not.

W v W v W is just Arena Net's version of TOR's Ilum. Only it'll probably be fun. And work correctly.

But, no, it's not world pvp.

  • VolkonVolkon Member UncommonPosts: 3,748

There isn't world PvP in the sense that you can't run around and kill people from your own server.

However... there is the WvWvW open world PvP, which are persistent, dedicated maps solely for massive scale PvP experiences, including keep captures and defenses, dynamic events, etc. There, the open world PvP is about killing people from two other servers that you're matched against for a two week period. Currently, at least by the latest numbers, there can be some 1500 or so people in there fighting (with server caps to keep balance). It's not instanced, just a separate set of four massive, persistent zones.

The core idea is to take and hold keeps, towers, supply camps, etc. to build up points over a two week period. You get points for what you are holding, not for capping itself. At the end of the two week period which ever server wins will have bonuses applies to their world, then you'll be matched up against two new servers of comparable strengths to help keep it balanced.

I wonder how many people will answer with the definition of WvWvW before people realize he just wanted to make it clear that GW2 doesn't have open world and therefore he won't be playing it.

its actually quite different than Ilum, Ilum have no purpose, there is some quests but its not an Persistent PVP world.

W v W v W actually have keeps, siege weapons, and quests to complete. Its a whole game in itself that you can stay and never leave if thats your wish. And your enemies changes every 2 weeks, so its always different and its always happening.

But it does have open world PvP. That's in the Mists, in the WvWvW zones. Yes, there's no open world PvP in the PvE zones, but those are different.

Basically, you can't kill people from your own server. However, there will always be people from two other servers available for your slaying pleasure.

The PvP is instanced and totally separate from the PvE. The PvP aka WvWvW is quite complex, large-scale, and hella fun (from what we've seen, gamebreaker.tv has some good pvp videos), but if that's a dealbreaker for you then this game isn't what you're looking for.

    "Loading screens" are not "instances".

If your definition of open world PvP includes being able to gank lower lvls for the fun of it, then No...this game isn't for you.

No ganking. All PvP is consentual. There is no open world PvP in the way people would traditionally think about it.

    So pass.

Yes, and anyone that took 3 minutes to read about WvWvW knows that.

Yet, that is not in any way "open world pvp" because open world means where everyone quests/gathers/plays and not in a separate area...the mists.

Alot of people think this makes a huge difference, since they want to either be able to gank people PVEing or have the sense of danger while Pveing.

I guess it was too hard for some people to just answer the OP without outright attacking him because he chooses not to play a game with no open world pvp.

There's no such thing as "open world PvP". In any MMO, depending on how many people participate, it's always either gank or zerg. Neither is particularly interesting.

GW2 will have WvWvW for large-scale battles and Sructured PvP for small-scale ranked matches.

It's better than battlegrounds, but it's still cut off from having real meaning by being somewhere outside the livable part of the game.

That sounds good to me. So the WvWvW area has a spot where people can go pvp when the big battle isn't going on after 2 weeks are up? Just making sure I understand.

The mist is basically a lobby for PvP, you can enter the WvWvW or the battlegrounds using it.

After the 2 weeks are over you get...2 more weeks against other servers.

I did my share of ganking. I quit it because killing someone who was worse geared, lower level or at half HP was never as much fun as others claimed. Speaking of carebear in general, pretty much in any MMO PvP servers tend to die out first. Ironically, even in WAR PvP servers died out first even though PvP was pretty much the only thing people ever did there.

There's plenty of sense of danger while PvEing... just not from other people. The mobs will kick your ass if you're not careful. They've even increased the difficulty due to the recent betas. So in GW2 you can choose your poison and not have it forced on you from others.

You're being too rigid with the "open world PvP" definition. The Mists certainly are a huge, open world area dedicated to PvP. The only thing you lose is the ability to gank those not expecting it. But you gain trebuchets.

That too, but yeah no such luck in GW2 as everyone in PvP will be scaled to 80.
