I wonder how many people will answer with the definition of WvWvW before people realize he just wanted to make it clear that GW2 doesn't have open world and therefore he thinks it sucks...
But it does have open world PvP. That's in the Mists, in the WvWvW zones. Yes, there's no open world PvP in the PvE zones, but those are different.
Basically, you can't kill people from your own server. However, there will always be people from two other servers available for your slaying pleasure.
That sounds good to me. So the WvWvW area has a spot where people can go pvp when the big battle isn't going on after 2 weeks are up? Just making sure I understand.
After the two weeks the WvW servers will be down for a couple minutes tops to calculate the final winner and match you up against two new servers. Basically, go make a sandwich, take a leak and you're right back at it again.

The mist is basically a lobby for PvP, you can enter the WvWvW or the battlegrounds using it.
After the 2 weeks are over you get...2 more weeks against other servers.

Yes, and anyone that took 3 minutes to read about WvWvW knows that.
Yet, that is not in any way "open world pvp" because open world means where everyone quests/gathers/plays and not in a separate area...the mists.
Alot of people think this makes a huge difference, since they want to either be able to gank people PVEing or have the sense of danger while Pveing.
There's plenty of sense of danger while PvEing... just not from other people. The mobs will kick your ass if you're not careful. They've even increased the difficulty due to the recent betas. So in GW2 you can choose your poison and not have it forced on you from others.
You're being too rigid with the "open world PvP" definition. The Mists certainly are a huge, open world area dedicated to PvP. The only thing you lose is the ability to gank those not expecting it. But you gain trebuchets.
Err...
No.
Let me get this straight because you're getting confused.
I will be playing GW2 and i welcome the division between pve and pvp, i've played alot of open world pvp games and while it was fun to some degree i would rather have a focused pvp path for everyone where competition trully shines.
What the OP was asking for was exactly what i wrote, open world = your server = where you quest pvp, that is not in GW2.
And the sense of danger in pve is MUCH different in a "pvp setting" then in a pve setting.
In your regular dinamic events you'll have to take care of the event, on the WvWvW dinamics events you'll have to take care of the event AND lookout for invaders, it adds a level of danger.
Some people really enjoy that, others (like me) just grew bored of it, it doesn't really add much to the game unless the game is fully designed around it.

Also, i think it's important to add...
If you feel like it, you can ONLY do PvP and you will level from it.
I for one will have a pvp only class that will live on The Mists.

Open world PvP is PvP that happens in a none instance zone. Just like everything in life there are different levels of it. Based on your definition, aion wouldn't be called an Open world PvP game because, you can only open world PvP on specific maps. Secondly, you can PvE in WvW if you wanted to, they have PvE stuff ofc. Thirdly, the sense of danger is more like a sense of fear, the fear that someone who sucks at PvP will only attack you when you are in a position you cant fight back, usually when your hp is down. That isn't PvP that just griefing.
Nope no pvp unless ur in pvp zones, carebear game is carebear
I did my share of ganking. I quit it because killing someone who was worse geared, lower level or at half HP was never as much fun as others claimed.
Yea, that may not be fun, but some of the most fun i have had in any MMO was when i was running around gathering, finding a rare node at the same time as the enemy and an intense battle breaks out. Or how about dungeon crawling with your group and you run into another group, massive battle insues, the winners get to keep on going. THIS is what open world pvp is all about imo. Then you get the carebears crying because they didnt get their shinies, because for some reason in todays world it is taught that everyone get a medal no matter first or last.
There no open world for pvp where you gank and then run and hide like most pvper's do..If you like this type of action..Then i suggest Darkfall.. At least GW2 level the playing field, there no i have to be urber than everyone else..haha

WvW in essence, never stops. The battles last 2 weeks, points are tallied up and a winner is announced, but the battle is reset and re-starts right away. At least that's my understanding of it from the dev videos I've seen. People could live in WvW and never do anything else. There are DEs in the mists I think too, and for the people not that good at PvP, you can support your server by doing PvE type things like gathering wood and materials to build catapults and cannons, things like that. That's where the gankers will live too IMO, ganking people who are gathering stuff, but at least the gatherers know that going in so it's consensual, not like in other MMOs where you're a level 10 getting ganked by a level 80 and then /spit on.

LOL at this, the game gives you the option to PvP only, at all times, on an even playing field and you call it carebear. I've also done my share of Open world PvP and it all comes down to gear, level, and OP classes. Yes it's fun for a bit, and when I played I was fortunately a top player but it was a shame when an under-level and under-geared player would lose because he was a lower level/geared player.
Some people are just afraid to be put in a game with equal gear and level and then realize the sad truth that they were never really that good.
As for me, I'll be bringing it in structured and WvWvW PvP
Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.

Games designed for open world pvp are fine, then what the shroom is talking about is not a game designed for it.
The moments you talk about are nothing else then ganking or random encounters with no real meaning, if you lost, you lost...bummer, that's not "hardcore".
GW2 won't be hardcore, but by definition the world vs world will be much less carebear then the moments you described.
A virtual sense of danger doesn't make a game "hardcore", the possibility of losing does, in the game you described no one ever got a medal, in WvWvW only the winning server gets the spoils...the others just defeat.
If you wanted to make a comparission at least make it to DF, Mortal or UO.

+1 PREACH! This is what I am talking about, mrshroom89 has it right.
Yeah during pve no1 can kill u, except the mobs ... It means u can play pve with all the community .. and It means less agressivity and less insults in the this one .
I really hate the wild pvp, it s totally unfair and useless. And why a community should be divide ?? At least Anet try to make a smart game ;D
Tera should be better for u, but u will have the equipment problem if u don't grind or spend $$$ like mad !
W v W v W is just Arena Net's version of TOR's Ilum. Only it'll probably be fun. And work correctly.
But, no, it's not world pvp.
its actually quite different than Ilum, Ilum have no purpose, there is some quests but its not an Persistent PVP world.
W v W v W actually have keeps, siege weapons, and quests to complete. Its a whole game in itself that you can stay and never leave if thats your wish. And your enemies changes every 2 weeks, so its always different and its always happening.
Er... Did you play Ilum? It was and is persistent. Utterly and completely stupid as an attempt at massive PvP, but definitely persistent. It had quests to complete, and you can stay and never leave if that's your wish. Terrible as it was.
W v W v W looks way better. And since you can actually get xp and loot off of slain enemies, I don't see a need for me to ever leave it.

You really think GW2 5v5 battles wont be decided by who has the most OP class comp? You really think that each class will have an equal chance against every class? you may have equal gear / level but i guarantee you each class in not equal.
Go play Counterstrike then your argument is valid.
I recently returned to WoW through scroll of res, level my toon to 85 and grinded out all honor gear (2nd best pvp gear avail) and have been rolling people in Cata pvp gear (best in game) and have reached 2.1k rating in 1 piece of cata. so no its not all about gear, just because YOU need better gear to kill others and consider yourself a "top" player doesnt mean everyone does.
You guys are making me want to keep a character in WvW permanently.
Good. They fully intend to make that an option. WvW is so much better than the limp-wristed implementation of 2-faction open world PvP that most games implement, because it allows PvE to be reserved for people who don't want anything to do with PvP, while still providing a huge open world for PvP players to play in that is DESIGNED to accomodate large-scale battles. Oh, and 3 factions are better than 2.
@ mrshroom89: even if each class isn't balanced (and frankly, considering the game mode is capture points, NOT deathmatch, I think that 1v1 balancing is going to be of diminished importance), the beauty of the system is that you can re-roll a new class and be back in competitive PvP with a maxed character in 5 minutes. So...yeah, that's not going to be a problem. Skill will still rule, not class balance.
