What system specs of my computer would you need to know to tell me what kind of RAM I need?

I want to buy a 512 MB stick...or at the very least, another 256.

I have often wanted to drown my troubles, but I can't get my wife to go swimming.

    Motherboard would be enough.
And manufacturer maybe, if you have one.

We got that buck-a-day deal but didn't take the one that was really a buck a day, since that was the lower-end computer. We took the middle-end computer. It's an IBM, Intel Pentium 4.

I need to bring in my computer to the local shop to see if there's enough room to fit in everything I want to add to it image

I'm a veritable master at computer software, but my knowledge ends there. I'm pretty stupid when it comes to hardware.

Basically, I want to put in a GeForce 4 FX (any kind really, as long as it's 128 MB), and I want at least 512 MB of RAM. Everything else is fine for now. Essentially, I want to be able to run EQ2.

haha, i love the quote in your sig man.

and whats ur price range for the card? heres one of the cheapest geforce fx cards, which i guess is what you mean and not 4, with 128 mb. link

and kingston is supposed to make good ram, and this stick seems pretty good for a good price: link

Much cheaper that what I've thought. Methinks I know what to get with my b-day money then!

Video card first though...thanks for the links man!

however, make SURE it's the fx series for Gforce, or higher than a 9200 for Radeon, because any other than that won't run EQII

it needs to be fully dx9 compatible

i can find out how much the ram will cost you if you give me your motherboard make, or your computer model

  • AlistairAlistair Member UncommonPosts: 318
needs to be a geforce fx 5200 or higher or a radeon 9500 or higher to run DX9.  If you're going to put any money into it, go for atleast a geforce 5600 or a 9600 (even better to go pro or XT)

you COULD go for the Radeon 9800 XT, trust me...it's one hell of a card!

  • AbyssKnightAbyssKnight Member Posts: 152

    What are the prices for:

    GeForce FX 5900?

    Radeon 9800?

And I'll open up my computer sometime to check out the type of RAM I need. Also, which GeForces and Radeons are 256 MB?

    image

  • SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

there are a substantial lot of graphics cards with 256..

the radeon 9800 xt, (i think the second most expensive gaming video card) has 256.

    the prices follow....

    142.50 = GeForce 5900 XT Leadtek - REFURBISHED

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-122-183R&depa=0

    and the 9800...

156, that's the pro, do NOT get the SE

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-102-268R&depa=0

waht's ur budget for the ram and vid card? i can mix something together to fit it

I'd say...well, I can't give anything accurate until I get paid (child, fixed income).

$150 from B-Day, parents will likely go another $100 I would think.

OH yeah, I live in Canada, if that changes prices.

  • RegnorokRegnorok Member UncommonPosts: 129

Your in canada? then theres no way your gonna afford a Radeon 9800 256.. their about 500 bucks not including tax. Either way its not worth paying so much for a videocard like that. Let me explain, a video card like that is years ahead of it's time, which means by the time you will actually need a video card that powerful, there will be other ones out already which will be much cheaper. a video card can always been replaced if they are capatible with your mainboard. I suggest for you Radeon 9200 SE (128 MB)
this video card can run all the current games with ease and only cost about 90 bucks. Im using it right now and im having no problems with it! im running Lineage II at 1152X864 resoulution with max texture detail at no lag at all. Theres other factors but you get the idea. Unless you one of those freaks that absolutly needs the resulotion to be 1600X800 where everything is so god damn small where you cant read anything then dont take my suggestion!

  • SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

yea well i go with that...just i would say maybe a 9600 (or anything in between 9200 and 9600)

im sure you don't wanna change it again when EQII comes out, and yes, L2 is like EQII, but still, there will be a lot more factors concerning EQII

    image

  • AbyssKnightAbyssKnight Member Posts: 152

    So overall you're saying that it's a Radeon I should get. About a 9600.

And like Murt said, I'm only preparing my computer for EQ2 and some other games my computer can't run that well currently (like GTA:VC, it needs at least a 32MB Video card and mine's a 16). And I only need another 256 MB RAM really, although I would like as much as possible. I don't care about RAM right now since my uncle can get me that really easily, and 256 is enough for me to run any game right now. So I'll just use my money for the best Radeon 9x00 that my money will get me.

And I'm not that interested in buying computer parts online since there's no real convenient way of paying for it. What's the cheapest place I can go then? Local store (don't know the exact prices), Future Shop, some other store? Thanks for all the help, too, guys.

newegg.com accepts checks and money orders

dude..you get wholesale prices with newegg.com...waht's the use of paying retail just to save the ease of mailing a check or money order?

save a LOT of money with newegg, trust me

www.pricewatch.com gives you a selection of several different components and a round about price. You actually have to go to the vendors site to check the price but they are normally pretty close.

The best I've found so far is www.newegg.com and www.buyxtremegear.com

On most pieces at buyextremegear they will offer another piece at a lower price just for buying them together. image

    Nice rig BTW Murt!

ok, new question: i have a crapload of music on my now parents pc downstair, all of which i got legally ::::40::, and id like to get all of it on my pc upstairs without burning it all onto cds over and over again, how would i go about doing this? i guess i have to network them or something, but im not entirely sure how to do that either.

I would think so. Just get a router and network everything.

Not quite THAT simple, but ya know.

First, i think you should make sure your motherbaord is captible with the new video cards, because if you were originally running on a 32mb video card, then im guessing that its not. The new videocards requires an AGP slot in the motherboard. Not Only that, it wont work on windows 98, so you gotta have something like Windows XP aswell. Im guessing your motherboard has a VGA or PCI slot.
The 9600 is pretty premiun and should get you going for a good while. But you said something about having 256 RAM ?? thats not enough my friend. Thats something for a "Watching movies, and surfing internet" type of computer. Trust me i know, RAM is in opinion more important then processor speed. If you want a computer for gaming, then you wanna get ALEAST 512 RAM (DDR).

  • RegnorokRegnorok Member UncommonPosts: 129

if both computers have internet, that means they are already networked (Normally)
if not, just buy a router.... its fairly easy, just buy a simple, go to the shop and ask for a standard D-link internet router for "Broadband ethernet router" . thats for high speed users (DSL, Cable). it should cost like 50 bucks not much. instructions are childproof, and if you cant get it, just call support and they do a great job helping.

Would you tell me the system specs of both computers? including the Windows. (OS)
