isnt there some mathematical equation to convert volts to watts?
If there was, I would be doing it :P. I dunno, maybe I'll go look.
EDIT: Well it seems like there is a way, It's Amps x Volts = watts, but I have no clue where I could find out what the AMPS are in the power supply XD. I'll have another look tomorrow.

No Second Hard Drive Option (not sure if i need one?)
GeForce FX5700 256MB 8X AGP Card w/ TV-Out
Those are the main things... A 17" LCD monitor, wireless keyboard+mouse and speakers are in as well.. So basically it's the whole Desktop for *Drumroll*
$2,665.96
Keep in mind thats canadian dollars. American would maybe be $2000? Anyways, post some suggestions wether this is good enough.. I expect to run EQ2 with it
well amd is cheaper... but if intel is your choice go ahead. you might need a second hard drive if you use kazaa or something. you might want to go a bi higher with the graphics card too, i found my 5700 to be a waste of 200. there are some models of the 5900 that are the same price and are probably of better value.

Well you can go with a lower processor and spend the money on the card.Radeon 9800pro is cheap now but you got to hurry as it is about to be phased out to make room for the x800 models. Also i am yet to see a single credible benchmark test that the radeon 9800XT had more then a 5-6% lead on the pro version thus making the XT a total waste of money. In the UK the readon 9800pro sells for £140 and the 9800XT for £270.Thats £130(about $200) more for a meager 5% that you would not even notice. Also the 9800pro from sapphire have been known to market the R360 in place of the R350 making it a XT in all sense but the paper. And the pro version easily clocks without problem to XT and above while the XT is a horrible overclocker.
If you are determined to pay the price of the 9800XT then go get the X800pro which cos here atm £280 just £10 more and is not only a generation ahead of the 9800XT but early benchmark shows more then 10% better performance.
My pick of the day for high end card is the radeon 9800pro but the choice is finally yours.

I've actually been thinking of getting a low end card (well, the radeon 9800Pro is still very impressive) and overclocking it. I would need a good fan though, because i'd bet an overclocked computer would conjur up quite some heat..
And i recently checked the processor charts, and i think i'm going to go with intel pentium 4 3.4ghz.
So here's my new update for a pc i might have in mind...
If you get a radeon9800pro its an excellent overclocker and dunno what you mean low end card as this is a high end card.Has beaten the fx5900ultra in all benchmarks and only slightly losing to the fx5950ultra and radeon 9800xt.
So in every sense its a card you can use for the next 2 years and be happy with.

So i would be using everything on it, msn, IRC, games, internet. Why LCD? desk space an issue? you go to lans a lot? Precisely. I have very little space in my room, and hauling in a huge ass monitor would just make it worse. Also i do go to lan parties so it would be great if i had a smaller monitor. Why do you need a new PC now?..I would more than suggest than to wait for more intergration of newer technologies with 64-bit CPU's. Plus your system performance with the new technology is greatly improoved The one CPU i'm on now is for my whole family, using business programs ect. It would be alot nicer if i had a personal computer, leaving downloads on, playing games at any time. Also, even though technology is improving, i could get a CPU like the one i said and would last me at least 2 years. And if not.... Upgrades! Overclocking is not always the thing to do...You do not need to overclock your video card or that radeon 9800 card for anything. Another thing overclocking does make graphics any better than what they already can do. Overclocking the gfx cards boost it's internal speed. Making it run faster that is it. Overclocking the radeon 9800 Pro would only be if games had low FPS, such as EQ2 or HL2. So overclocking is perfect for that, "Making it run faster that is it." Also by low-end what do you want cause i mean under 5600/9600 gfx are not going to run the latest games at full. And even those cards 5600/9600 (and the 5700) will not run the upcoming new games at full. Because of simple differences in coding with DX 9. So like doom 3 will loook good but not it's best. The highest you could go with 5600/9600 is farcry. After that point you will have to settle for less graphical capability in newer FPS's. I'm not going to get a low end card, unless you consider the 9800 Pro as one
One hint: Forget that Intel Extreme Graphics and look for a much better graphic card like a GeForce FX 5600 or better. Intel graphics just sux and is not useable in any real 3d game.

One thing you should be aware about computers aged rapidly.
Just 2 weeks ago the R9800XT was the best card on the market now its below the plain FX6800 and X800 not to talk about the ultra and pro versions.
In 3 months time with the new PCI-E versions coming out they will surpass the AGP versions.
So honestly I can only give you advise for today .In one years time this cards too will be surpassed.
Talking about the PCI-E it might be adviseable to build your system on one of the new motherboard with a PCI-E slot.Reason been it seems a waste to use a current motherboard and Gcard when this is where the future is going.
If you were upgrading I would say go for the current boards but since you are building from scratch then go that way.
According to nvidia even a mid range card with PCI-E slot would run faster then the current FX5950ultra which means as it would surpass the R9800XT.
So my new suggestion is wait till august when the new motherboards and cards hit the market and get a motherboard with a PCI-E slot and a mid range card that slots in.You would have safeguarded yourself for a few years and gotten a very fast card too.
In next couple of years most of us would have to get new motherboards as it stands.I am planning to build a new system early next year myself when the prices of PCI-E cards would have settled down and get a good deal. Both nvidia and ATI has stated in the next 2 years most of us would probably need to go PCI-E so best you go with that rather then be forced to build a system from scratch in 2 years again.
I agree with hercules. I would wait for the new mother boards and cards to hit the market. Probably in August. Lol, they'll be expensive to start out with though. I'm waiting for prices to drop or at least till 1st quarter of 2005. With the new mother boards and cards you should be able to upgrade your system with the best tech for the next several years.
Lol, I make post # 1540 to this thread. Is this the longest running thread at MMORPG.COM??? A lot of good advice btw.

Aye will probably cost a bundle when they come out so like you i am waiting till early or mid next year to enter to PCI-E era .But we all gonna have to upgrade sooner or later to PCI-E.
I'm thinking of building an entertainment pc sometime this summer. i have some parts selected, which i will list, but i have a couple questions first: can i use a windows xp home installation disk on 2 different pc's? and how if possible can i attach this pc to a regular home tv? not sure of a specific name, but not lcd or plasma or anything.
total price is $938.0 including shipping. this rig is not meant at all to be a gaming rig, so i'll use a tv tuner card instead of an AIW ati card. the xpc comes with onboard geforce graphics, so that should be good. i tried to get the cheapest of everything i could get so i could get more in some areas (bigger hard drive for recording shows). another question: what software can i get for recording shows? also some software for buring dvd's would be useful too. and also monitor/tv help. tell me what you think.
Yeah satan was gonna comment about that not been a gamer's rig but you already know hehe.Onboard card will do jack on any post 2002 mmorpg. But you can always add a Gcard as you need it .
i was going to use it as a media center pc, music, movies, and tv. the cheapest 30 inch lcd i found was 1800, so ill try that s-video thing with an existing tv that i own. i might get a slower processor, and do i need 512 ram or could i save some money and get 256? and i dont think the case im getting has room for 2 hard drives, so im just getting one big one.

Lol, i think i was cursed for not paying attention on this particular thread Gunblade. Just an hour after posting to herc's comment my mother board decided to go pyro on me.
I had to rebuild my whole system except for hard drive and cd drive. I decided to go cheapo since I plan on spending $$$$ after xmas on building a slay system. Hadn't bought parts in about 2 years, lol, boards and processors are much cheaper now than they used to be.
I got an AMD Duron1.6ghz, PC DDR266 M825 board, 512mb DDR SDRAM, ATI Radeon 9200 card, and a few little misc parts for under $325.00. I know it is kind of low end compared to the systems you can put together, but it'll tide me over till xmas.
BTW, rathma, the new motherboards with PCI-E slots and chips are scheduled to be out in time for just before fall quarter for xmas. This date is not concrete, but from what I've gleamed over the net and in the news, a pretty good target date.
