Today I pose a question upon the way I am going to cool my computer. First let me explain what I will be doing. I ended up with a refrigerator for free, and was just going to put it next to my desk so that I don't have to get up to goto the frig for something to drink, yes I am very lazy...what?! ::::35:: Well anyway, upon looking at it I notice that the compressor is pretty small, about 6x6x6 inches which is no suprise since the frig is mabye 4 feet tall, but the part that got me thinking was the radiator. Most refrigerators have there radiators spread across the whole back of the refrigerator, where as the radiator on my was actually about 6x6x1 inches with a fan connected to it that was mabye 1 1/2 inches deep. Upon seeing this I played with the idea of makeing a case to freeze my comp. Another convienence was that the cooling panel within the refrigerator was about 14x16x6; the panel was bent into a concave form that created a 6'' gap between each side. What this means is I can essentially just slide my board with everything hooked up including a grounding panel and power supply into the space between the panels and as well hook up some fans.

Well, after realizeing I would have to make a case I eventually did using many items from home depot and made one that is air tight so as to keep the humidity out and as well insulated extremely well. It was pretty difficult arranging the cords and makeing the seals around them air tight so as to keep everything out, but anyway. My question is this, how would I remove the humidity from within the sealed space before turning on my freezer to reduce the tempurature? I thought of mabye using a cup of brake fluid and just setting it within the sealed case because brake fluid absorbs humidity extremely well, but the only problem with that is that it is a liquid and I run the chance of it spilling if the case is bumped to hard. Also, not sure if anyone will mention this, but I'm pretty sure that rice and crackers are not really an option because I doubt they will absorb all vapor within the enclosed space.

Well, if you come up with anything, post your suggestions. I havn't finished with my seals and as well some of the structure needs to be welded together and I won't be able to actually fire it up till sometime in the beginning of july since I will be gone for the next 3-4 weeks, so probably sometime twoards the end of july I will attempt to deep freeze it so I can do some extreme overclocks. Once I finish it I will see if I can't post some pics for you guys.

Whoa... U gotta let me know how that goes.. I had a similar idea, but gave up on it because I thought the heat grill would end up increaseing the heat inside the case. But with the seals, etc, it sounds like that may work. My only suggestion about the moistere is to set the case up where some cool, dry air(from a fan) is blowing acros and into it, hopefully that would remove the majority of the vapor.

Even if u did run it, with minor moister inside, the water would condense, so u could always stop it and dab it dry with very absorbant paper towlels.

Either way, let me know how this works.

    I'm confused.

If anyone would like to put offers on my computer, I will sell it...

Fully loaded with Windows XP Pro with the latest SP and DX 9.0c.  I will also preload it with a few games.

I bought my videocard for $210.  I hope this gives you ideas on what highend videocards go for.

    I seen on e-bay someone selling a 5950 Ultra 256Mb for $100.

When I made the case I made the entire thing about 18x18x20 so that I could keep the compressor and radiator in a different area not enclosed with the computer components, Well except for my optical drives I had to keep those out of the freezeing area as well. I made the primary enclosed area that has all the computer equipment and freezeing panels air tight so as to keep all outside air out, because outside air always has some median of humidity in it so I have to keep the air from outside circulating with the air enclosed within the primary area so that the condensation doesn't continueally collect. Because if any ice or condensation forms on my board it will fry. Also I think I made a mistake on the dimentions of my panels they are actually 14x6x16 and it is one panel that is about 3 millimeters thick but is formed into a concave form that makes the panel structure 6 inches tall hence 14x6x16. Thnx for the idea though.

Debbdol if i were u go to newegg.com

here is a link to a VERY nice video card for real cheap.

I currently have a 9800 pro but the top 3 links show u video cards that have the same or little better performance from mine. So check them out.ALl those cards can run absolutely every game on the highest settings possible. Im sure u can run EQ2 on pretty nice settings with those. I am too gonna play EQ2 but i have my 9800 Oced to 9800XT speeds even passed that so i dont have anything to worry about.

back with this problem, with new generation games, about an hour in i get "general protection fault!"

now i need the latest drivers for my 9800 XT, however, the ones I install just keep doing the same thingimage

are there any SPECIFIC drivers for the 9800 XT ONLY and not catalyst cards in general?

and how the hell am I to fix this? it's getting annoying!

    Hello DaShiz.image

I think I have a solution for you on the humidity problem. Brake fluid does absorb moisture well, but is impractical in an electronics application. At work we use a material called Zorb-It, and it works very well. We build state of the art agricultural sprayers and sanitizing sprayers that have sensitive electronics and computer timed and operated sprayers. Some of this equipment is as much as $150,000.00 US dollars, and not only do we have to solve humidity problems, but also, keep out moisture from the sensitive electronics from the water and water based chemicals that the sprayers will be spraying.

I will be using it in my pc I build this fall to absorb and maintain an optimum humidity level. Here is the web site for more info.

Hey, if anyone wants to help, I have a problemo.....

I am trying to get rid of all those freaken annoying programs that start up when windows does. Some of those programs are programs that display an icon in the task bar, I want to get rid of those too. So what I did was ran msconfig under run. I went to the start up tab and got rid of all those programs. After rebooting, they are still there and a message pops up saying that windows has started in selective mode and to get out of selective mode, go back to msconfig and click on normal start up. So I did that and i'm back to where I started. Can anyone help me please?

Ok, first thing. What you did using msconfig was right but you just did it wrong. You cant and dont want to get rid of all thoes programs or your puter wont start correctly as you have noticed. You need to select only the TSR's (memory resident) in the toolbar that you want to remove and nothing else. Several files located in msconfig startup are required.

Ok so i responded to you in both locations :)

Hehe, you can check out my response in the other location, I'm too lazy to bring it here.

Problem solved! Someone recommended that I download a program from download.com and use that to get rid of the start up programs. It worked great! It also cleaned up my computer! Found some adware too and spyware. Nice program. It's called advanced system optomizer by systweak inc. it's good I recommend it. the only thing is, there is only a 30 day free trial after that you have to pay I think.

eh....i tend to stray away from those "system optemizers". Im just not too sure about how they operate, and I dont wanna mess with my system.

  • AnnekynnAnnekynn Member Posts: 1,437

You should stay away from system optimizers. Their 'optimizations' often net very little performance and can cause weird problems/instabilities in your system if the optimizations tweak windows too much.

If you want to remove spyware use programs like Ad-Aware and Spybot.

Ok, i need help now. I play FFXI, and for some reason, latly i've been starting to lag, nothing to do with the servers or anything, it just, out of the blue, started lagging one day. I've tried everything i can think of, the tech for my cable company said they don't deal with games (what a suprise, they barly deal with anything). Oh and i do have cable. I was wondering is there anything that any of you know that could help me out, being a whm, the team realies on me, and any second that i lag, is precious time. Thanks!

RAM often has two different classifications.  One is the bandwidth of the RAM module (in megabytes per second) and the other is the clock speed that it effectively runs at.

DDR4200 is also galled DDR533.  The 4200 number means that it is capable of transferring 4.2 Gigabytes per second and runs at a clock doubled rate of 533 Megahertz.

DDR3500 is also called DDR433.  The 3500 number means that it is capable of transferring 3.5 Gigabytes per second and runs at a clock doubled rate of 433 Megahertz.

Obviously the faster module is better, but only if the motherboard in your system can support running DDR memory at 533 Megahertz.  There are several different motherboard chipsets and they all have different capabilities in what memory they can support.
