I recomended the advanced system optimizer, and still stand behind it. It allows you to undo any changes it makes, and really works wonders. I've been weary of them in the past, but this one really works. It helped turn my P3 machine at work into something that actually performs. It defrags registry and cleans it, too, and If you don't use it blindly (aka you actually know what you're doing), it can only help you.

The only RAM you really need to worry about is PC 3200, because it's the industry standard right now. Anything faster needs to be tweaked on most MoBos to even work. Slower RAM is a safer bet as well, but with its price, if you can use pc3200 (DDR400), use it.

Well here are a few links to some basic guides and examples of what they are used for, also there are a few pictures.

Link 1; Kind of a short overview of why and what for with some links in it as well.
Link 2; Easy guide to hooking it up.
Link 3; More in depth guide for hooking up Dual Monitors.

Dollar for dollar, Maximum PC is by far the best all-round computer mag out there! Hard to beat 12.00 a year price and all the great info they provide month after month. Thats my 2 cents worth! image

    That sux Murt.

I don't subscribe to any computer or gaming magazines any more. I get most of my info online. Why pay money for the magazine when most of the same info can be found online?

On top of that I've got a bad habit of saving all my mags. I just recycled a bunch, but I still have about 3 boxes full in the closet.

A few posts ago, actually quite a bit, I posted specs on a new system I'm putting together at the end of summer. Here is an update with changes I've made. I am going to overclock the Athlon 64 3500+ cpu and the X800 Pro vid card. I'm not at all worried about PCI-E and DDRII from the research I've been reading. Here you go:

    AMD socket939 Athlon 64 3500+, 2.2ghz$497.00 <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-463&depa=1

    ASUS A8V Deluxe Wi-FI socket939 mobo $171.00 scratch it
I’m switching out the ASUS mobo for an ABIT "AV8" K8T800 Pro Chipset MOBO $132.00

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-181&depa=1

    Corsair XMS 1gb (512mb X 2) DDR PC-3200 RAM$258.00

    ENERMAX 550w PWR Supply EG651P-VE(FMA)$148.00

Seagate 73GB 10,000RPM SCSI Hard Drive$269.00 scratch it
I’m also changing the hard drive out to a Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10,000RPM SATA Hard Drive, Model WD740GD, OEM Drive Only $185.00 ($165 with mail-in rebate)

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&depa=1

    ASUS DRW-0804P DVD +Rw/-RW drive$129.00

Gigabyte ATI Radeon X800 Pro vid card$459.00

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-125-135&depa=1

Lian-LI Black ATX Mid-Tower Case, Model PC-V1000B $199.00 scratch it

I’ve decided to go cheaper on the case and not do as much modding to the case itself. Why cut up a $200 case, and also, why spend $200 on the case??? What was I thinking!?!?!? I’m switching to a Thermaltake Black Xaser III Skull Series Screwless Mid-Tower Case, Model "VM3000A" – RETAIL $99.00 It’s a very nice case for the money. Well, just check it out here:

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-133-118&depa=1

My old total was $2,132.00 + tax & shipping from Newegg.com. The new total is $1,889.00 which is a savings of $243.00.imageimage

I have also decided on a monitor. I’ve looked online and then went to retail stores just to take a look and see for myself what the different monitors look like running next to one another. The SAMSUNG 955DF-T/T 19" DynaFlat CRT Monitor looked very crisp, clear and sharp compared to a lot of other monitors I looked at and especially for the price of $215 from Newegg.

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-001-119&depa=1

As far as a heatsink/fan for my Athlon 64 3500+ socket939 cpu, the only one currently that will work with socket939 is the Thermaltake SilentTower 4 in 1 CPU Cooler for Intel P4 478 & Socket T, AMD K7 & K8, with Heatpipe Cooling, Model "CL-P0025" for about $45. It is a good heatsink.

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-043&depa=1

In addition, I’m going to add a Vantec Blue Spectrum Fan Card to help cool the Gigabyte X800 Pro card. It runs at around $19 from FrozenCPU.com.

    http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/slf-02.html

The total with monitor, new heatsink/fan and the Vantec Fan Card now comes to $2,168.00 + tax & shipping so I practically paid for the monitor and new heatsink/fan with making the above changes. Still have a few other things to look for. Let me know what you think because I’m open minded. I’m still open minded about the nVidia card, but the performance tests and stats still have ATI’s X800 series running neck and neck with the nVidia 6800 series.

Ok, so I have to get a laptop for the fall, since I'm going off to college.

Here's my question: Does anyone know where I can get the stuff to build my own? I'd rather do that if possible, even though I've found some great deals for desktop replacements.

Newegg doesn't have anything in the form of Notebook parts, except for maybe a few processors and some RAM. If I want to build my own, where do I look?

    http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp.net/store/configurator.aspx?mid=94

That's the one I was looking at, or another with a 9700 pro instead. Like I said, though, I'd rather save some money and build my own. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

"it is better to have 'matched' ram. Meaning, if you can, you want to match to the same size and speed as your current ram.

Ex: You currently have a single stick of 256 Meg 'PC2100' (runs at 133 MHz). You would want to purchase more of that size and type.

You are only as fast as your slowest part, so it makes little sense adding ram that is faster than your current ram."

Now does that mean if i add a stick of 512 to the stick on my computer (256) will it be like 768 (I think I did the math right lol) this guy confused me so any help please thanks ::::19::.

  • LifebleederLifebleeder Member UncommonPosts: 11

What he's basically trying to say if you have PC2100 RAM in your computer right now, it would make no sense to buy PC2700 RAM.

The reason is simple. RAM will run as fast as the slowest part will allow. If you have DDR333 Ram (333MHZ), and buy a stick of DDR400 Ram (400MHZ) the new Ram will not run at it's full potential of 400MHZ because the old ram will not allow it, it maxes out at 333MHZ.

So the real reason to match up the speed of your ram is so your not wasting money. It's like paying 5 Dollars for a Pepsi at 7-11, when you can get it for 1 Dollar across the street.

Yes and no. It does give good info for newbs to computer modding, building and hardware, but it also is open to anyone with a question or suggestion, newbs and experienced computer modders, anyone. Props to murt for starting it and for mmorpg.com for not locking it and letting it be. Very good thread in my opinion.imageimageimage

The last is like the Immunize tool in Spy-bot, but seems much better.

    Hi,

Im looking into upgrading my pc, and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice..

I've found a decent website (I live in the UK) but when it comes to whats good and whats not for gaming I don't have a clue, Djin helped me earlier (Thanks verrryy much Djin) with picking out a few parts to buy for a set budget. Since then I have found a page on the website that does Motherboard clearance deals.

    http://www.autdirect.co.uk/acatalog/A_U_T_Direct_M_board___CPU_Bundles_24.html

Here is the link, please could you guys advice me if any of these deals are worth it, and which would be best to go for. Im using my PC for gaming.

    Thanks

you mentioned in an email to me earlier that you were planning to get the 5200..

however, I know that you will be with me  in EQII the first day of the release, that graphics card will suit you, but not with ease.

I suggest using a few more "pounds" and getting a semi-decent one.

if you really can't afford 150 more "pounds" (is that like 300 bucks?) but you can afford 60 more "pounds" then go with the

but i strongly suggest, if you can afford it, to go either with the 5900 or the 9800 XT (which i have, but it overheats a lot)

EQII will thank you, and keep this in mind, if this is the one time you're going to do a mass upgrade on your pc for like another 2 years..that graphics card (the 5200) will not be of good use. spend a few more "pounds" and get a decent one.

    You'll thank yourselfimage
