Not the same thing. This is the first time I've seen a AAA company charge the moment you "pre-order", at full retail cost. Usually pre-orders (which it isn't for GW2, given you've paid), reserves you a copy of the game for release and one doesn't get charged until just before the game is released.
In the case of GW2 there is no pre-order, as you are sold the game even though it hasn't a release date.
You all can twist the words anyway you want. This isn't anything new and you can have a problem with it if you want. To act like Arenanet is doing something wrong is the problem. If you don't like it then say so but don't make Arenanet out to be some horribly evil company when it's just marketing. If this was as big a problem as you guys are making it out to be, then there wouldn't be subscription based games. It's the same thing. You pay a subscription to access a game. Where are all the rants on having to pay to access content in WOW, or SWTOR, EVE, XBOX live, etc... You glady paid your subscription to SWTOR, so yep it does look like you have a selective agenda here.
FYI, incoming moving target. A reply will be mad shortly about whether we should accept this from the gaming companies or not or should we hold them to a higher standard.
Twisting words? There's a huge difference between an everyday add, and beta access being tied to a marketing strategy.
I certainly didn't pre-order TOR and only paid for one month of it, I'm not holding on to a sub in hopes of anything. I don't think anyone has said it's new, just that A-net is partaking in a practice they have problem with.
And what agenda would that be?
The whole point is you paid for it and unless you can point to a thread of you complaining to have to pay for access the game, your being a hypocritical.
The point is that marketing is for a hook in everything. It doesn't matter what's for, to complain about only one company doing it is nothing more than BS. You guys are making it out to be like no one has ever paid for access to beta before. And you trying to make it sound like it is a bad thing when it isn't. It really isn't a bad thing because you have a choice. If it was forced on you then it would be a bad thing. The question here is, would I pay early to get acess to the GW2. For me, yep. For you maybe not. To act like the company is bad for offering it is just dumb. Why? Because If I want to buy seats to a baseball game and I want the the ones that are close to the dug out so that I can have access to the players I pay more. And if I want to insure that I have those seats, I pre-purchase season tickets. Why, because I want to and I have the choice. Again, this is nothing new but you are certainly trying awfully hard to make it sound like it is. If the deal is not good enough for you then don't do it.
So I haven't read through the over 200 posts in this thread. Someone give me a synopsis of what all of this popular topic is about please.
in a nutshell people don't like that the OP doesn't support Beta being tied to pre-purchasing.
Don't think that's the case. Its more that there isn't a pre-order, but a pre-purchase. Those who have paid should get into beta. I think its more the fact you have to, if you want to be sure 100% you'll get it. Its not the only path into beta, otherwise it wouldn't already be underway. However, with no pre-order its misleading.
Best thing to do if you are concerned is to wait until release, or return the box (un-opened) which you throught wouldn't be shipped until the week of release.
Given the number of MMOs that get canceled (some just before launch), this really isn't good for the industry.

What? How in any way is paying for a live product the same as paying to test a product? I tested TOR from August until december for free, I knew what I was buying, this is not even remotely the same thing.
Who's to say the OP or others have only complained about this in regard to GW2? I've seen this complaint every time beta is in any shape or form tied to pre-orders/purchases.

Nothing wrong with throwing some cash at a product you believe in, if that isn't for you, fair enough.
I understand a lot of the negatives posted about this, if I hadn't had a quick hands on, hadn't got behind Anet's vision and hadn't had a positive experience with them before I wouldn't have invested in it. As it is I'm happy to throw some cash at them without a release date, I want this game to be all it could be, I want Anet to succeed, cash always helps in that I'm sure. The team they have is pretty top notch so I'm not too concerned about losing on my investment. If I ended up wasting the cash, so be it, not the first time I've wasted cash in my life and doubt it will be the last.
Anet are trying to evolve the genre in substantial ways, I'm happy to get behind that.

There are pre-orders actually. The pre-purchase is a different thing and ANet has been very specific about it. Is it unusual to pay for an unfinished game? Sure, but it's not like you're forced to pre-purchase anything. You can always either pre-order or simply wait until the game launches to buy a copy.
As far as the beta test goes, this is not actually a beta test. These are Beta Weekened Events. The BWEs are basically demos of the game and we aren't really expected to test anything. ANet uses in-house testers to do any serious testing and the BWEs are just a way for them to thank the people who pre-purchased the game.

I think many would completely support those of you who feel that way, I do, I doubt I'm alone. I don't see anything wrong with pre-purchasing if you believe in a product or vision. Many support their hobbies in such a way, it's what keeps many of those hobbies going strong.

Actually, your wrong again. The OP has the right to make a post about what he dislikes, everyone else has the right to post our on thoughts on the subject. It is a forum. I can confidently say that not one of us cares about the OP's dislike for Beta being tied to pre-purchasing.
The synopsis of this thread is like most other threads, some one make something out to be a bigger deal than it is or to make sure everyone knows what a big dea it is to them (depends on which side you fall on) and other's reply because the disagree and then others post support for what the OP is saying, or that it is a valid concern. Sprinkle in the occasional fanboy's are stirred up today posts before you know it your over 200 posts. Basically like all other posts.

Not in the EU, at least. For example go check sites such as Amazon.co.uk. All that's being sold is the pre-purchase. I suspect its wider reaching, as go to the GW2 website. All it says is "Buy Now" and offers the pre-purchase.
BWE's are beta, and usually used for stress testing. I think the word beta in the title may give it away. They are also not just using in house testers. Beta has been going on for a while.

The op only expressed that it may be a deal-breaker for himself, he didn't say anything else throughtout the entirety of this thread that I've seen.
What was I wrong about before? My own opinion?

That's exactly the thing you are not paying to test the product. Like any sports event or concert you pay for the tickets in advance. You have no garantee that it will not suck or not. You can liken it to concert and being allowed a meet and greet before the concert starts. Or the oppertunity to watch the team train before the big game. Or do you question the method of having to buy tickets in advance as well.
You are buying the product and as a reward get access to the beta events. Do not twist it into something it is not.
Pre purchase is not the only way to get into beta, you will be able to snag some keys in later beta from lots of gaming sites, you do not have to pre purchase, all you have to do is wait.
If you cannot wait then pre purchase, but do not get angry because you are not able to get in this beta. Also shows like tales of tyria were giving out beta keys, and I am pretty sure other press people who attended pax east were giving them out also.
So if you werent on top of things you didnt get one, but if you were hopefully you are one of the lucky ones.
cheers have a nice day.

What they're doing in my eyes is using Beta as a carrot to entice early sales. WHat other purpose does an E-mail that says "Want beta access? Then pre-purchase now".. serve?

The lack of pre-orders is usually a retailer problem. Publishers and especially developers have nothing to do with it. All they do is allocate a number of copies for each retailer and the retailer, in turn, honors the pre-orders from those copies. You should email Amazon.co.uk and find out why they do not offer pre-orders when their US site does.
As far as BWEs go, I'm sure that they ANet will collect some data based on BWEs but for us, players, the focus is not testing. It's simply to play the game and have fun. Whether there is another beta, in-house or otherwise, going on is irrelevent. The BWEs are not part of it and we're not expected to submit bug reports.

I want to play the beta but Im not home this weekend :'(
And the lemmings march on and on ...
You stay sassy!
i am still not sure why you guys still QQ, "Prepurchased" are meant for their GW2 fans who waited for 5 years.
There is no launch date. Don't be so drama mama cos you get an email about prepurchased.
If you are not happy or refused to buy than you are not their fans, just wait for Open Beta.
Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language
There will be no open beta I figured a fan would know that much.
