okai, 26 pages and they still did not understand that you don't buy a beta, but the game.

guess they will never learn, some people are destined to die dumb :>

I think most understand this, it's not that people are arguing about buying beta, they're arguing against using beta as a means to entice those sales. That's where I am coming from anyway.

That e-mail is as annoying as the buy now! adds that popped up ever since the Pre-purchase opened. More hype for a game with no release date. Really, it could just be more money to fund another delay.

  • NaughtyPNaughtyP Member UncommonPosts: 793

I'll probably buy the game to be honest, but not before a release date and not before more people test it out. I'd love to do beta but I'm not going to pay for it either. If I get into a free beta at a later point in time then I will surely test it as best as I can. If someone wants to pay for beta I have no problems with it either. I just refuse to do so.

Umm.... wont the pre-orders help pay for the development of the 3rd or 4th expansion pack? (Pretty sure the 1st expansion is nearly done in alpha and the 2nd is on its way... pure conjecture, but would make sense on how they will truly monetize this IP - cash shop is not going to do it, expansion every 4-6 months).

Win win. That being said, im just going to watch the beta youtube footage/reviews. Swtor burned my arse on pre orders.
  • ThaneThane Member EpicPosts: 3,534

i stopped to care about people's opinion ages ago, so what difference does it make to me if i buy it before or after release :)

i'm gonna make up my mind by myself, not by some weird review.

    just saying :>

It may. I think it's more to secure funding in advance for launch / the 1st expansion. What a lot of people seem to be forgetting is that this business model needs expansions in order to be successful. If they screw up launch, they are done. It's that simple. Other companies would abuse such a system to secure subs, but this game doesn't have that. Trying to pull a fast one for a quick cash-grab, would be the worst move they could possibly make. It would tank their business.

    - That said, I wouldn't call selling expansions monetizing. That's a very harsh word to use for what's a very gamer-friendly business model. Sounds like you are assuming expansions will be small updates, when the company's reputation says anything but. Again, a system like this ensures that you only pay for what you want. It's not like ME3 where they botch the story and make you pay to have it corrected. There's a pretty big difference.

Now I am definitely not buying the game because I never received an email to prompt me to buy the game. Doesn't ArenaNet care about me????????????????????? :(((

I just feel a need to make clear that I, personally, did not pre-purchase the game to get into the BWE.  I pre-purchased because of the 3 day head start and I like in game items, so the ring was actually a motivator for me.  I was already buying it for certain, the perks that came along with PRE-buying it were just that....perks.  I would have still pre-purchased for JUST the head start and ring.  So not everyone that pre-paid did so with the same motivations.

Interesting, in this thread funboys are more upset than those who refuse to pay for few hours of limited beta gameplay. If you already pre-purchased, than whats the fuss? ;)

It's not that people refuse to pay, it's the idiotic statements that are getting people annoyed.

actually its not. You dont get to do whatever you want with a car you test drive just like you dont get to play the full game of single player buy 2 play game.. why would you think its different with a buy 2 play MMO? Betas have been used as incentives to buy for a long time.. this is nothing new.

  • DignaDigna Member UncommonPosts: 1,994

I think most of the pre-purchasers were planning to play/buy anyway. It's a pretty safe bet GW2 will be a good game and possibly a lot more than 'good'. The 'beta event' is more of a bonus than a test drive.

Once I bought a nice sports car. I had already committed to the sale but it hadn't been finalized. Being a Friday night, I was going to drive home ever so slowly in my old car when the dealer asked me (if I could get the insurance to confirm coverage) if I wanted to take the car and come back Monday to sign the papers, do the XYZ and take the old car home. I had fun that weekend...weeeee

lolz, you are too funny......when i test drive a car i get the feeling of that car.....cause that what you do...you drive a car...when i get to play a game (BETA.....just 5 lvl's would be nice) i play the game to test it.....if i like the feel of the game i buy, just the same as i would with a car.....because that's what you do when you test a game you know.....you play it for a very little amount of time just to get the feel of it.....if you like, you buy :)

So you should have gone to one of the cons this was at.. I mean you go to test drive a car at a dealership right? They gave "test drives" of the game.. beta is not a test drive. You also failed to counter the fact that this is something games have done for ages. VERY few buy 2 play games give demos these days.

Considering the way that you type, I can without a doubt say that you've probably never been a valued beta tester, let alone know what it means to actually beta test something.

The sooner you step off your self righteous pedestal, the sooner you can learn to realize that Guild Wars 2 is a priviledge, not a right.

You should also realize that just because you didn't buy the beta does not mean that you will not get into any of the weekend betas. In fact I know of 4 people who have already downloaded the client and have their accounts prepped and have not pre puchased the game.

If anything you should relish the fact that there will be much much more footage and coverage being uploaded to youtube after the beta weekend, which means there will be more information at your disposal.

To be honest your best bet is to wait for a free trial to come out post release, because it seems you only want a sample of the finished product, and you're probably not going to find that in this beta weekend.

How about we keep it in the entertainment industry. You can buy season tickets for your favorite sports team, but for all you know your favorite team will completely suck that year. You have zero guarantee on if you will get your moneys worth before hand. Now what if teh season tickets will also give you access to closed training sessions. Will you complain about how you want to see their closed training sessions before buying season tickets to know if they will be good or not?

How about tickets for a concert, excluding buying them at the door. You have no idea if the the performers will have an off day or not, but the tickets offer you a meet and greet beforehand. Would you demand the meet and greet without buying the tickets?

Both examples actually have you buy before you get your monies worth.

Try to use analogies that make sense within the context.

What ANet is doing is offering a 100% chance of testing the care you are going to buy anyway. Prepurchase is for someone who has already made up his mind, not someone looking for a test drive. That's what trials are for.

It's like offering a test drive of the car you ordered. That's that.
