I mean how can some people not even get that the OP was talking about buying beta not getting an email. GW2 is not having an open beta. You pre purchase (not preorder 10 bucks down to make sure the store has a copy) at full price. The entire reason anyone would prepurchase is to get into the beta weekends.
Apply some spin and you get paying full price for a beta on a game that doesn't even have a release date. Some more spin and your given the privilege to play beta as an added perk of prepurchasing the game.
Let's face it both of those spins have some fact behind them.
I can see how it would be a slap in the face to get an email saying buy the game now at full price and get beta when you thought you just won the jackpot and got a beta invite. I can also see how any rabid drooling fan who is itching to play the game would just throw money at them and be so excited and happy that they would never even be able to consider someone else being displeased with this.
Then there is me. I don't care about beta at all since everything will be wiped for retail, so I'll buy it at release.

Well, believe it or not, thats the subject of the email beeing sent by NCSoft/Arenanet to people who did sign up as beeing interested in checking their upcoming title Guild Wars 2.
Let me tell you something,
IF i was thinking on buying this game, after receiving this email, i am PRETTY SURE i wont
Hmm, this just sounds like you did NOT get the OTHER email that those of us recieved after pre-purchasing :-D
In that email we were told a spot has been RESERVERED for us, but wait... This was EXACTLY what was stated would happen when it was announced earlier this month... wooow... This is so very strange...Almost ominous of them eh...

Just tried to watch Guildcast from GamebreakerTV, but couldn't because Gary invited two shameful GW2 funboys who coincidentally never were classic GW players (just recent few months), they mindlessly gloated over those 'skeptics' who intentionally skipped pre-purchase. Just can't watch this, and I'm truly GW fun, 7yrs and countless played hours.
Those who already pre-purchased can't possibly understand that is not about 'skepticism' or 'paranoia' its the simple decision and more about patience and modesty than anything else.

Gloated? Over what? Missing out on beta testing something many will be playing anyways when they get the game at or shortly after launch? Are you exaggerating or are they really that stupid? Wtf is there to gloat over?

Do you have a point? Who in this thread wasn't aware of this? Your "neener neener" attempt doesn't really have any teeth to it considering...you know...as you said yourself if someone really wanted in the beta all they had to do was purchase the game.
So...yeah...
Amazing how the OP was put to the fire essentially for his attitude over this whole affair considering the attitudes of those brandishing the torches. I can tell already we're gonna have a community for the ages in this one. Maybe it is a good thing there won't be a global channel after all.

Sheesh some of you argue about the most silliest things. Neither side is right nor is either side wrong. I generally never pre-order anything so I definitely never pre-purchase. But this time I decided what the heck and went ahead and pre-purchased this game a couple of days ago. Why? Because from the research and notes I have gained on it I know I will definitely get it when it releases so I said, 'Why not?' if that is the case.
At the same time those who rather wait have a valid point especially since there is no official release date. That was the biggest hurdle for me. So playing it safe and paitient is definitely a good idea as well. Nothing wrong with that. One should always do what they feel best and go with it. Nothing worth having pages and pages of arguing over.

It appears to me that these people (who for some reason believe they are entitled to free stuff) are just bitter because they didn't get into the closed beta. Wickedjelly, I'm sorry you were bothered by my post, there was no "neener neener" intended. I was simply expressing my sadness of the way some poeple allow themselves to be consumed by bitterness, especially over a game. I am excited to play GW2 and I feel pitty for those who have to hate on us who are happy.
The point was to show the ridiculous sense of entitlement of those who believe they should have free access to a closed beta and their bitterness to those who are genuinely happy to play a game they have waited for 5 years.
If I wanted to "neener neener" anyone, I would have transformed into a wow/swtor troll and started hating on anyone without any sense, logic, or any good reason at all.
Even though I like almost everything I've learned about GW2 so far, I'm going to prepurchase ONLY when: 1) a release date is announced, 2) I get a beta access before I pay anything, and 3) cash shop is fully disclosed.
Otherwise I'll just wait till release. It's nice to be patient.
P.S. And yeah, I got this e-mail too. Laughed and deleted it. Nice try, dear NCSoft, nice try.

Your sadness and concern is heart touching. But I guess you could save your crocodile tears. I think a lot of people think betas should be free. Because its not a finished product and normally you are helping the company test the game.
Its about principles. You are helping the company and your reward is that you might have some fun. But you really cant expect a finished game or the fun you would have if you played one. Thats why paying for it is wrong, IMO. It should be give and take. This is obvious and common sense. No bitterness and no entitlement.

Not the same thing. This is the first time I've seen a AAA company charge the moment you "pre-order", at full retail cost. Usually pre-orders (which it isn't for GW2, given you've paid), reserves you a copy of the game for release and one doesn't get charged until just before the game is released.
In the case of GW2 there is no pre-order, as you are sold the game even though it hasn't a release date.
There are pre-orders actually. The pre-purchase is a different thing and ANet has been very specific about it. Is it unusual to pay for an unfinished game? Sure, but it's not like you're forced to pre-purchase anything. You can always either pre-order or simply wait until the game launches to buy a copy.
As far as the beta test goes, this is not actually a beta test. These are Beta Weekened Events. The BWEs are basically demos of the game and we aren't really expected to test anything. ANet uses in-house testers to do any serious testing and the BWEs are just a way for them to thank the people who pre-purchased the game.
Not in the EU, at least. For example go check sites such as Amazon.co.uk. All that's being sold is the pre-purchase. I suspect its wider reaching, as go to the GW2 website. All it says is "Buy Now" and offers the pre-purchase.
BWE's are beta, and usually used for stress testing. I think the word beta in the title may give it away. They are also not just using in house testers. Beta has been going on for a while.
the Netherlands (where I live) are in the EU. Because I had issues with my paypal account I was trying to find a pre-purchase at retailers but all I could find were pre-orders because pre-purchase was allready sold out and they were waiting for new dvd-cases that contain the code. Go take a look at bol.com for example and search for GuildWars2, you'll find the pre-order for both the SE and CE (if not sold out again, I haven't checked for like 1,5 weeks). Also I've checked a lot of german gamer sites and they all have the pre-order, only a few have the pre-purchase. UK =/= EU
Luckily my paypal account got fixed so I still pre-purchased DDE directly from Anet/NCsoft.

It is nice and good to be patient. I'm happy for your discipline... I certainly couldn't wait haha
The release date is June 27th. There may yet be an open beta further down the road, but as of right now, only closed betas. If you wanted access to the beta without pre purchasing the game, you could have signed up for the beta (not guaranteed though) or even better, you could have gone to a gaming conference and played the beta there. You've had plenty of chances already. As for the CS, the parameters have been laid out in detail and enough items have already been revealed that I believe a very well informed decision can be made regarding the CS.
Just as Anet is entitled to run their betas the way they want, you are entitled to be as patient as you want regarding purchases. I have no problem with people wanting free access to betas (hell! I want that too). But I do have a problem when people troll on others who get access to a closed beta as a bonus for pre purchasing a game when they themselves are not willing to do so.
Why the heck would ANet build a sub-free mmo, have an closed "invite only" beta, THEN turn around and have a "free-for-all open beta?? Wouldnt that be like releasing the game early only to periodicaly shut it down to open it back up again?
Since GW2 is no longer in closed beta, may as well pre-purchase the full game "but it don't have a release date".... Well you're entitled to be a pessimist but don't fault people who are optimistic given the evidence of their hope.
I would think it's rather stupid if a sub-free game gives an free open beta, shuts down, then asks you to buy it. That only helps the consumers and hurts the developer because all the haters then gather around and pin point every single detail of the game in which they find faults in, thus hurting the profit they could have made had they simply appealed to the more serious customers who are willing to purchase the game fully.
I have bought many console games that I thought was good and turned out to be crap, and likewise games that I thought would be crap turned out enjoyable but never the less I can't cry over spilled milk because it was a one-time purchase and not subs... Just like GW2, get over it.
I pre purchased GW2, downloaded it yesterday and I am all ready to go for this weekend! :-)

I think that you misunderstood what these beta events actually are. They aren't beta tests. They are basically demos of the game. You're not going to actually test the game and submit bug reports, you're just going to play the game and hopefully have a good time. They are called beta events because they take place while the game is still in beta testing.
That's all there is. No one is trying to rip you off or take advantage of you by having you pay for beta because BWEs are not actual beta tests and neither are you paying for them. You are paying for the game and the beta events are just a bonus. And ultimately, you're not forced to pre-purchase anything. You're more than welcome to wait until the game launches or not purchase it at all. You make your own decision, no one is forcing you. I really don't get the whining about all this.

Are you Monorjo's alter ego or something? I don't really see how this topic or most here are bitter or haters. No one is trashing the game that I have seen. The point was simply the e-mail and for some how beta is being handled. Where you guys get this somehow correlates to them hating the game or being angry with beta players or that they aren't in the beta is simply bizarre.
I don't even see the sense of entitlement issue. No one that I saw said it is bullshit they aren't in the beta - if they even aren't. For all you know some that feel this way could be actually in the beta. I know for a fact one such person that is >_>. Sure he or she isn't the only one.
It is how it is being conducted that irks some. Agree or disagree...that seems to be the crux to me.
I'm not a fan of it but regardless my sentiment this is how it goes anymore. Nothing new here. Doesn't mean I agree with it though. As for the e-mail I found it in poor taste and rather lame. Nothing earth shattering or unique but again simply weak and frankly entirely unnecessary. Would I have made a topic about it? No...because not like they're alone in market oversaturation. Doesn't mean I didn't chuckle and shake my head knowing it would irk some and simply wasn't necessary.

I just got a new job so I have a lot to do anyway. Besides, I play LoL these days. While not a MMO, this game is so much fun.
The release date is June 27th.
Like I said before, GW2 almost definitely won't be released in June. The earliest plausible date is probably late August but December (or November) is yet more likely.
If you wanted access to the beta without pre purchasing the game, you could have signed up for the beta (not guaranteed though) or even better, you could have gone to a gaming conference and played the beta there.
I did. Only to get a bunch of e-mails about how comfortable my money would feel in NCsoft's pockets.

Agreed. Peole need to get their heads out of the wow/swtor sand and understand a very simple concept... you are pre purchasing the game (i.e. buying the game), the betas are a BONUS. Just like a car company sells you a car with bonuses, you are buying the car, not the bonuses. Sure the bonuses come with the car, and they may not be available at a later date, but you are in fact buying the car. People may by the car because of the extra bonuses, but you are still buying the car.
I think I've said it enough times, maybe, just maybe they'll finally get the point!

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

the Netherlands (where I live) are in the EU.
But I do have a problem when people troll on others who get access to a closed beta as a bonus for pre purchasing a game when they themselves are not willing to do so.
make love (gw2 wvw style) no war (trolling)
I already mentioned but no one even tried to refute it, but i'll try again.
How is this any different then aiding a company through Kickstarter?
The way I see it is like this:

I'm not paying for beta...
I'm going to be playing a sneak peak testing weekend for a full release game I've already fully paid for.
And you're supporting a company that you believe deserves that trust.
It's exactly like Kickstarter.
Like I said before, GW2 almost definitely won't be released in June. The earliest plausible date is probably late August but December (or November) is yet more likely.
I did. Only to get a bunch of e-mails about how comfortable my money would feel in NCsoft's pockets.
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
