I'm happy for your discipline... I certainly couldn't wait haha
I just got a new job so I have a lot to do anyway. Besides, I'm playing LoL these days. While not a MMO, this game is so much fun.
The release date is June 27th.
Like I said before, GW2 almost definitely won't be released in June. The earliest plausible date is probably late August but December (or November) is yet more likely.
If you wanted access to the beta without pre purchasing the game, you could have signed up for the beta (not guaranteed though) or even better, you could have gone to a gaming conference and played the beta there.
I did. Only to get a bunch of e-mails about how comfortable my money would feel in NCsoft's pockets.
RED: LOL is an awesome game!
YELLOW: And you know this how?
BLUE: so mmo gaming companies are charities, not business?
So you sign up to recive info about the game and you complain because they send you info about the game.
GOOD JOB
I find it irritating because I already pre-purhcased. So no, I really dont need/want spam in my inbox asking me to do something I already did. I have recieved 4 of these emails since I prepurchased and your damn right I have emailed and contacted them on twitter about it. The response was basically telling me its a mass email and to deal with it. So I emailed them back asking if I could expect the company to be as lazy with the game as they are in seperating thier databases between who bought the game and who hasnt. I havent heard back needless to say.
If I had not got the game yet I would expect it. Having already purchased the game and STILL getting these spam mail I find irritating.
I pre purchased GW2, downloaded it yesterday and I am all ready to go for this weekend! :-)
It appears to me that these people (who for some reason believe they are entitled to free stuff) are just bitter because they didn't get into the closed beta. The writing was on the wall a long time a go people. If you wanted guaranteed access to the closed beta, you had to pre purchase the game. It's not like its advanced math or rocket science, its quite simple actually.
Oh well... I'll leave them in the misery of their own bitterness while I go play my game this weekend! woot!
Do you have a point? Who in this thread wasn't aware of this? Your "neener neener" attempt doesn't really have any teeth to it considering...you know...as you said yourself if someone really wanted in the beta all they had to do was purchase the game.
So...yeah...
Wickedjelly, I'm sorry you were bothered by my post, there was no "neener neener" intended. I was simply expressing my sadness of the way some poeple allow themselves to be consumed by bitterness, especially over a game. I am excited to play GW2 and I feel pitty for those who have to hate on us who are happy.
The point was to show the ridiculous sense of entitlement of those who believe they should have free access to a closed beta and their bitterness to those who are genuinely happy to play a game they have waited for 5 years.
If I wanted to "neener neener" anyone, I would have transformed into a wow/swtor troll and started hating on anyone without any sense, logic, or any good reason at all.
so... yeah... yeah... (so ridiculous)
Not exactly sure where the conversation has gone to 31 pages in but in regards to the start of this thread I think the bitterness has more to do with the fact that many of the fans of this game have been responsible for posts about how wrong it is for people to have beta access dangled in front of them while being asked for money.
I was very active in this thread early on and my biggest problem wasn't whether this is ok for ANET to do but more with the way the op and anyone who continued to debunk the practice were trolled as if the opinion becomes wrong simply because it is a game that a person is looking forward to.
It's highly hypocritical and devalues the opinion of any of those posters when they then turn around and try to blast Cryptic for offering beta access for subbing to one of their earlier games etc.
I personally don't have a horse in this race because I firmly believe that gaming is such an inexpensive hobby that there is nothing wrong with some creative marketing if that games fans are willing to accept it. But this post started with someone who stated he was not willing to accept it and quicly degenerated into something being wrong with the op simply for sticking to his guns.
And let's be honest here some games have in fact released without resorting to this kind of practice and I would think it reasonable to say if ANet decided not to do this we would think that a better option that them doing it whether you are willing to pre order or not.
Heck some of the posters even degenerated to claiming that the poster didn't want to beta test but wanted to play the game early (wich I have only ever seen levelled as a charge in extreme cases of fanboism).
So you sign up to recive info about the game and you complain because they send you info about the game.

I think that you're being a bit too sensitive about it. It's 4 freaking emails, not 400. Hit "delete" and move on.

I don't need charity. But I want a reasonable amount of information about what I'm going to buy. And a "test drive" where it makes sense. Singleplayer games have demos. Multiplayer games have open betas. (D3 had an open beta weekend recently and IIRC Blizzard claimed it wouldn't have open beta at all.)
MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).
I'm going to be playing a sneak peak testing weekend for a full release game I've already fully paid for.
And you're supporting a company that you believe deserves that trust.
It's exactly like Kickstarter.
I skipped most of the thread. Whats wrong with Kickstarter again? I love kickstarter arguments. Simply because there is no good argument against it. Every argument I have heard saying kickstarter is bad for xxx reason has boiled down to lazy people not wanting to do alittle reseach before backing something.

For the most part I do agree with you. People are going crazy, on both ends. Fanboys need to keep studying the professions and their skills while the haters need to go back to playing wow and swtor.

I'm pretty sure everyone will agree that there is plenty of information regarding everything gw2 online (forums, youtube, facebook, twitter, etc, etc)
As for a "test drive", there may yet be an open beta further down the road, we'll see. As to D3's open beta, less than 3 weeks before release is hardly cause to demand gw2 an open beta months before release.

That is entirely subjective. It isn't stupid for someone to support it if they simply don't give a shit or are a fan of the company or game. Nothing wrong with those buying the game if from what they have seen they feel it is worth the purchase already.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

If it's OK for NCSoft to ask you to pay for a bets, why isn't it OK for another company? You're paving the road for something you're going to hate someday, my friend.

Fix'd. And yeah, it's exactly corporate greed in my book.

Let them. I simply won't purchase it until I feel comfortable I have seen enough in depth information available or a free demo/trial. May garner them other sales but they'll lose mine. So be it. I'm not that tied up in any particular genre or game that I can say it bothers me.

That is good thinking, if you are unsure about a MMO you should always wait until you tried it.
To me who liked the first game it was a given thing to buy it, but for anyone who is unsure there will be a chanse to try it out for free later.
It's nothing like Kickstarter. KS is about helping indies who are in need of funding. ANet isn't independent and NCSoft is worth $3b. We have pure corporate greed here and supporting it is quite stupid in fact.
Really? You are talking out of your arse as if no company has ever done pre-purchasing.
I mean, I could keep listing game after game that you have an OPTION of pre-purchasing through steam, but do I really need to? Yes, all those games do have release dates, but besides that, you also get some kind of perk for pre-purchasing, just like Guild Wars 2 offers. Please, get over yourself
I can afford $60 for a game that I know I'm going to buy so it was an easy choice.
It feels good knowing that I'll get to play this coming weekend.
It feels even better knowing that trolls and haters won't pony up $60 and won't be in the game trying to ruin it for anyone else.
I wish every game went this route. No more free betas filled with trolls and children who have no intention of ever buying any game. Either put up or shut up.

You know, this never even occured to me. The Tera beta was chock full of trolls (many of whom were yelling about GW2) but I imagine since you had to pre-purchase to play, it will make it a much more troll-free environment, and I support this. That doesn't mean it won't have people being critical of the game or that people shouldn't offer critical opinions, but intentional trolls have a barrier.
"Loading screens" are not "instances". Your personal efforts to troll any game will not, in fact, impact the success or failure of said game.
SWTOR didn't have an "open beta" either, but still managed to invite hundreds of thousands of players who had not pre-ordered the game simpy by inviting everyone who registered on the forums. No reason Anet won't do this for everyone who applied to beta.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Tera's collision detection made it ripe for people to abuse other players... and lack of commitment gave them license to verbally abuse people in chat while trashing the game.

So you're basically saying that if I would like to try and get a feel of the game before buying it, I'm a troll. Nice logic there.

No. I don't know who you are and don't remember reading any of your posts. I have no idea what your intention is.
I know that Tera suffered from a large amount of trolls and abusive people during their open beta event.
Console games are sold without free previews. Why not MMOs? When's the last time you heard someone say, "Man, that new Mario looks great but if they don't let me try it for free then they're a bunch of evil jerks just out to get my money and I'll never buy anything from them!"
MMOs rely on player interaction. Players who are not fans of a game and only want to try a game to see if they like the game tend to be disruptive and abusive during their free trials. People who fully inted to purchase the game tend to be more supportive. There's no right or wrong way to perceive a game, but I don't think it benefits MMO developers to let the people who don't really want to be there in only to disrupt and disparage the game that paying customers are trying to enjoy.
People should be able to tell from features and reviews whether or not a game is worth trying. There's no reason to open games up to trolls and haters in hope that some of them might stick around. All they do is sew seeds of discontent.

since March, Diablo3 was asking players to pay in advance full price if they ordered from Blizzard
the Open beta weekend D3 had was 3 weeks before launch
GW2 doesnt have a release date yet
ANET has said there will be no open beta but im sure many get a chance to play (without buying) before launch
