I thought about it, but at the same time I really would like to have beta access, one of my favorite things to do in an MMO is try and break them during testing phases. I just figure if Beta registration is tied to advert mails, beta invites are as well.

Not the same thing. This is the first time I've seen a AAA company charge the moment you "pre-order", at full retail cost. Usually pre-orders (which it isn't for GW2, given you've paid), reserves you a copy of the game for release and one doesn't get charged until just before the game is released.
In the case of GW2 there is no pre-order, as you are sold the game even though it hasn't a release date.
There are pre-orders actually. The pre-purchase is a different thing and ANet has been very specific about it. Is it unusual to pay for an unfinished game? Sure, but it's not like you're forced to pre-purchase anything. You can always either pre-order or simply wait until the game launches to buy a copy.
As far as the beta test goes, this is not actually a beta test. These are Beta Weekened Events. The BWEs are basically demos of the game and we aren't really expected to test anything. ANet uses in-house testers to do any serious testing and the BWEs are just a way for them to thank the people who pre-purchased the game.
Not in the EU, at least. For example go check sites such as Amazon.co.uk. All that's being sold is the pre-purchase. I suspect its wider reaching, as go to the GW2 website. All it says is "Buy Now" and offers the pre-purchase.
BWE's are beta, and usually used for stress testing. I think the word beta in the title may give it away. They are also not just using in house testers. Beta has been going on for a while.
The lack of pre-orders is usually a retailer problem. Publishers and especially developers have nothing to do with it. All they do is allocate a number of copies for each retailer and the retailer, in turn, honors the pre-orders from those copies. You should email Amazon.co.uk and find out why they do not offer pre-orders when their US site does.
As far as BWEs go, I'm sure that they ANet will collect some data based on BWEs but for us, players, the focus is not testing. It's simply to play the game and have fun. Whether there is another beta, in-house or otherwise, going on is irrelevent. The BWEs are not part of it and we're not expected to submit bug reports.
As I said. Go to the GW2 site, and try to pre-order. You can't! All you can get is the pre-purchase.
You'll also probably find its Amazon.com that's somwhat unique in offering a pre-order.

ArenaNet is not a retailer. That is why you cannot pre-order from them as they are not obligated to let you pre-order. They don't stock the game. When you pre-purchase, your account gets flagged and that's that. You want to pre-order an actual physical copy? Go to an actual physical retailer.
ArenaNet is not a retailer. That is why you cannot pre-order from them as they are not obligated to let you pre-order.
That's implies developers don't have retail arms, and don't let you pre-order. Every other company has managed it.
As I said, in the EU you can't. Retailers are only selling the pre-purchase, because that's all they are being given. Also doing a quick scan it seems like amazon.com is somewhat unique in having a pre-order. I'd suspect like what happened in the EU a box will be appearing at people's door.
The whole point is you paid for it and unless you can point to a thread of you complaining to have to pay for access the game, your being a hypocritical.
The point is that marketing is for a hook in everything. It doesn't matter what's for, to complain about only one company doing it is nothing more than BS. You guys are making it out to be like no one has ever paid for access to beta before. And you trying to make it sound like it is a bad thing when it isn't. It really isn't a bad thing because you have a choice. If it was forced on you then it would be a bad thing. The question here is, would I pay early to get acess to the GW2. For me, yep. For you maybe not. To act like the company is bad for offering it is just dumb. Why? Because If I want to buy seats to a baseball game and I want the the ones that are close to the dug out so that I can have access to the players I pay more. And if I want to insure that I have those seats, I pre-purchase season tickets. Why, because I want to and I have the choice. Again, this is nothing new but you are certainly trying awfully hard to make it sound like it is. If the deal is not good enough for you then don't do it.
What? How in any way is paying for a live product the same as paying to test a product? I tested TOR from August until december for free, I knew what I was buying, this is not even remotely the same thing.
Who's to say the OP or others have only complained about this in regard to GW2? I've seen this complaint every time beta is in any shape or form tied to pre-orders/purchases.
A subscription is to access the game. The pre-purchase is to access the game. It is the same thing. Because I purchased access to the game, whether or not its early or during testing. It isn't for testing alone. I paid for the game early that is all. The fact that you are focusing on access to the beta is meaning less because I have full access to the game when it comes out. I just payed for it early and a bonus to that is I get into beta. I can also guarantee that my pre-purchase will last much longer than your one monthly subscription did. You don't like paying for a game early, I don't like paying a fee for limited access to a game. We could argue that the one month of time that you bought is worse than me paying early for unlimited access. But, you were cool with that and that is fine. Why can't it be ok for a company that is offering unlimited access to their game have a pre-purchase event?
I wish I could tell you that it was wrong just to make you feel better but I'm not. For this particular product I am happy to pay early because I believe it to be worth it. It's ok that you don't but stop trying to convince others that the original OP's post is accurate because they disagree.
This post is in the GW2 forums about a email the OP admitted to signing up to receive. That is what people are posting about. The OP is only taking offense to what Arenanet sent him not the 1000's of other marketing hook's he looks at on a daily basis. That is what I am replying to.
So I haven't read through the over 200 posts in this thread. Someone give me a synopsis of what all of this popular topic is about please.
in a nutshell people don't like that the OP doesn't support Beta being tied to pre-purchasing.
Actually, your wrong again. The OP has the right to make a post about what he dislikes, everyone else has the right to post our on thoughts on the subject. It is a forum. I can confidently say that not one of us cares about the OP's dislike for Beta being tied to pre-purchasing.
The synopsis of this thread is like most other threads, some one make something out to be a bigger deal than it is or to make sure everyone knows what a big dea it is to them (depends on which side you fall on) and other's reply because the disagree and then others post support for what the OP is saying, or that it is a valid concern. Sprinkle in the occasional fanboy's are stirred up today posts before you know it your over 200 posts. Basically like all other posts.
Isn't that essentially what I said? WIthout the needless synopsis of whether it's made out to be a bigger deal than it is?
The op only expressed that it may be a deal-breaker for himself, he didn't say anything else throughtout the entirety of this thread that I've seen.
What was I wrong about before? My own opinion?
You were wrong by stating that we don't like the OP stating his opinion. That was incorrect and it wasn't the same as what I said because I didn't say that. Mine referred to people posting their opinions. Yours was kinda hearsay.

As I've said, if you have an issue with a lack of pre-order in the EU, take it up with individual retailers. But here's a pre-order in EU that I was able to find with my extremely limited knowledge of EU retailers.

(yellow) We'll have to agree to disagree on that. I think you misunderstand me here, what I have a problem with is Beta being used as a marketing tool and sales pusher.
The only thing I'm saying about the OP is that it is how he feels, nothing more nothing less, just like I'd support you on your right to feel GW2 is a worthy game to pre-purchase.

Beta has been a marketing tool and sales pusher for years now. It's really nothing new. I mean, people pay IGN Prime subscriptions just to get access to exclusive betas. Is it wrong? Probably but who cares at this point? You or me or anything else is not going to change it. At least with GW2, I'm paying ArenaNet directly and I'm not being charged anything extra.
And I have to stress this again: Beta Weekend Events are not normal beta tests. They are demos of the game. We're not expected to fill out bug reports and questionaires. All we have to do is just play the game and enjoy ourselves.

I understand a lot of the negatives posted about this, if I hadn't had a quick hands on, hadn't got behind Anet's vision and hadn't had a positive experience with them before I wouldn't have invested in it. As it is I'm happy to throw some cash at them without a release date, I want this game to be all it could be, I want Anet to succeed, cash always helps in that I'm sure. The team they have is pretty top notch so I'm not too concerned about losing on my investment. If I ended up wasting the cash, so be it, not the first time I've wasted cash in my life and doubt it will be the last.
Anet are trying to evolve the genre in substantial ways, I'm happy to get behind that.

In all honesty, how is this different from all the games with pre-orders that give a headstart?
If its a pre-order you dont have to pay full price in advance. A pre-purchase is very different.
Typically you pre-order. Get a code in a e-mail that give you beta access and headstart. After release you get a s c grace period that is perhaps one week. After that you will have to register a retail code to continue playing. This means you can play beta, headstart and one week after release without actually paying anything. Seems like a much better deal from the customers POV.

Come on bro, you've raised your post count more than enough today, take a look at your sig, time to do something productive.
Remember... all I'm offering is the truth. Nothing more.
Unfortunatly for most games this days the real betas are somewhat short and extremely closed.
In my opinion one of the mistakes arena.net did was not having a larger worldwide beta (still quite limited in people).
What they're doing now?
