There was a cash shop in Guild Wars--they sold character slots, weapon skins, costumes, etc.
I find it weird that people almost always omit Skill packs when they bring this up. I know they won't be in GW2, but that doesn't make it any less questionable why you make no mention of that in reference to GW1 here.
Because it doesn't matter. You could still just spend the time in-game to get all the skills.
They've already said that GW was a more heavily PvP focused game. They realized with their low level cap of 20, most people just wanted to get right into PvPing. That's the reason the skill packs were there. And people gobbled it up.
I'm impressed. It has been several days since I have seen a cash shop explosion. I guess it had to start again eventually. To bad it couldn't have waited till Monday. /shrug
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Whatever you want to call it is beside the point, I'm not saying it's pay to win, but GW1's shop was hardly cosmetic only as you guys were alluding to with your sarcastic humor.
I was not being sarcastic (for a change :P ). The skill packs were available in the store, but, as I pointed out - it only took a day or two of finding the right mobs & having a ring in inventory, to aquire the same skills.
So I reiterate what I said - the store was purely convenience for some people.
I was referring to this.
"Yep, I'm ashamed, I used the cash shop in GW1 to buy Char slots & storage space & some costumes.
I then managed to beat several high geared players in PvP and made a fortune........"

So... you dont want to support the company thats allowing you to play their game without a sub fee? Stay out of the cash shop if you not interested, but leave it for everyone else who might find its items useful.
Dont be cheap.
What about the part where I ... You know, pay $60 for the game and pay for the expansions. Don't see how I'm cheap, but let me extend that to where I bought all of their campaigns for Guild Wars 1 and there were no cash shop or gems when it was alive.
And the people who are saying they'll pay for the stuff in the cash shop. I severely doubt you will do just that. But hey, lets bring in the era of B2C, which would be buy 2 cash shop. Lets get rid of the F2P games, because that's just stupid. Lets volunteer to have game companies charge use twice. When they shake me up for cash, I tell them where I hide it!
Hey, you guys don't have to riot against both, it seems like most of the people don't have any pro-arguments for gems. But hey, my interest lie with the gamers, not the game companies. Not sure what your motives are for siding with them or why you would want the F2P + cash shop norm to become the B2P + cash shop norm, but if you ever do get a free copy of GW 2 for doing so, please do tell the world.
Wait, they have non-cosmetic things in cash shop. Loot bags, and one item in cash shop even unlocks an additional loot bag. I mean, it's not advantage in PvP, i'm sure, but it's useful. not only cosmetic. I'll stick with the game? HELL YEAH! but let's not fall in some darkfall/mortal online delusions: it's not only cosmetic, and we don't know how far it'll go after launch. But for now, it's all good for me. Good enough,at least

To the point being made that I quoted I'd say it matters, as it's a blatant omission. He can't make a point that it's only cosmetic, while including that.

They work by you paying money? I believe they are the primary income for games that cost $0, that is free to play games.
subscription cause the game to work only by paying money. Why not say negative stuff there too so all games remove subs?
GW2 is more balanced because theres no sub, but theres price box. so its not a $0 bucks product. I still doubt they need to add pay to win stuff while they will get so much money for box and expansion and cosmetic cash shop. but lets see after release.

Whilst you COULD buy the packs - you could also go out IN GAME and earn them without too much difficulty.
So again, a convenience - not a pay to win scenario.
Whatever you want to call it is beside the point, I'm not saying it's pay to win, but GW1's shop was hardly cosmetic only as you guys were alluding to with your sarcastic humor.
Except...considering how GW1 is designed...those that purchase the skill pack over those that earn the skills in game will most likely be at a disadvantage (unless this is a second account). Those that actually earn skills in the game will know more about the skills they use.
Plus do you have any idea how bloody easy it is to earn balthazar points to purchase skills from the vendors for PvP (did I mention that skill packs only unlock the skills in PvP, and that merely by playing PvE, you can unlock most of the important skills in the game for PvP).

Thing is buying the skills with points takes a knowledge of what skills create good builds, buying skill packs circumvents that.

This whole thread is silly. If you're in the beta because you pre-ordered, you already cast your vote on cash shop, and you voted "yes".
Hardly, pre-purchasing says you support the company and ideals of the game, buying cash-shop items says you support the cash-shop. Two different things, a person could buy the game and never ever make a CS purchase.
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
But in GW2 we have a "unlock bag slot". Imagine that in WOW. If u had only 5 slots for bags, and u could unlock the sixth only via cash shop. Not something that unlocks all char in account. nope. One for EACH character. WoW don't have that. I think only F2P games have something like that. I can be wrong (if i am, someone is bound to correct me here.). And again, i'll still play it,but it's not all dreams and magic in that cash shop (or skins and exp bonus, for that matter)
This is what I've been saying for...well, ever since the cash shop was announced. WoWs already shown, clearly, that people are going to pay for stuff like that. EVEN WHEN THEY'RE PAYING A SUBSCRIPTION.
No one is forcing anyone to buy from the cash shop. You can still get things from the cash shop by just purely playing the game and not spending real currency. And people who will be regularly using the cash shop....how exactly does it matter to you specifically? In most cases so far, it's just people who have a superiority complex who are whining.
Judging by how ArenaNets developed GW2 so far, I'm finding it hard to believe they'll ever add items that could destroy the balance of the game.
People need to quit crying. Just because you can't afford the cash shop doesn't mean others should not have the opportunity to use it. Hell I even purchase the SPEED PASS at Six Flags theme park, just so I can jump to the front of the line for every ride.
I fly 1st. class for more room, no babies and other perks. I also pay for a service at my local grocery store to assemble the things on my grocery list and have them ready for pick up.
The point I am trying to make is If someone can afford it and someone is willing to make it available, Then it should be no problem.
If I want a lobster ,caviar and salmon roe roll at a Deli should I not be able to get it, just because not everyone can afford it?
This whole thread is silly. If you're in the beta because you pre-ordered, you already cast your vote on cash shop, and you voted "yes".
good point. There is a lot of unfounded hype (rumor) regarding the specific items in the CS. Considering how the beta client download process is going, it appears most people don't have any problem with the CS.
So... you dont want to support the company thats allowing you to play their game without a sub fee? Stay out of the cash shop if you not interested, but leave it for everyone else who might find its items useful.

Couple of facts to go with your delusion: GW1 is still "alive" and it has had a CS since I started playing, which was when Factions was first released. I believe they introduced that CS a few months before Factions came out. That CS had Bonus Packs, Skill Packs, Pet Packs, plus extra inventory and of course, cosmetic items.
You mean, like a subscription? Oh wait, that's not charge you twice, that's charge you over and over again if you want to play. At least with a CS and no sub, I can chose whether I want to spend more money than the cost of the box or not.
And finally, isn't an argument saying a CS is ok in a game a "pro-argument" for gems? Also, if your interests truly lay with gamers, wouldn't you advocate a F2P game with non-Pay2Win item CS rather than a sub based game?
You want me to pay to play a game I already paid for???
I congratulate the OP on making the worst thread of 2012. You just want ANET to give you their game for free. I am so tired of the self-entitled generation.

Also please remember these are services that they are not forcing anyone to use, and also it won't make or break the game..
It just baffles me at times, but i bet if anyone who is against it was working at either comapny (blizz or Arena Net) you probably would see it different..
Sir I diagree and believe you don't know how cash shops work
This might just be one of the funnest things Ive read in a long time. Im pretty sure we all know EXACTLY how cash shops work and how they shape and form what goes in and stays OUT of the games we play.
I stand by my word in stating F2P games and cash shops are loved by people who:
Have no means to pay for a sub game and are most likely leeching off of someone elses internet, parent, roomate etc.
Have plenty of extra money they are wiling to dump into a game to get a leg up on someone else
Having the attention span of a nat and dont care about maxing their character, they are just looking for something to hold their attention until the next F2P releases.
That about covers it. All the level headed employeed people would rather pay a sub for a game and get the ENTIRE game in one measured cost and attain all a game has to offer in a resonable length of time.
I think it's unfortunate that you didn't have the attention span in school to learn how to spell gnat. I know, it's a big one with all four letters and such. No offense of course, just saying.
It's probably advisable to learn the difference between free to play and buy to play.
That being said, I still think your opinion is completely without merit and simply a way to self justify your own problem with ongoing subscription fees. But you probably really like getting the ENTIRE game from paying a subscription to a game like WoW. Except for expansion packs, which makes sense cause they don't make enough from just subscriptions. Oh and the cash shop because they don't make enough from box sales, and subscriptions and expansion packs. Good thing all those level headed people got it figured out so they don't get scammed by B2P games like Guild Wars 2.
"Companies are getting smart. Developers are getting smart, and they are starting to turn to a more microtransaction based transaction model for their games. We can have a little bit of operations in microtransaction based games, but its not very good for us. We have always thrived on subscription based games that have had really robust in game economies we can (I don't want to say exploit) we can work around."
Feel free to watch the rest of the video.
Its very informative.
RMT exists in almost every mmorpg out there in the form of buying gold from gold farming. Feel free to see if it exists for the game you play. Google "Buy gold for _(insert game name here)____"
Arguably every game where you can buy in game items with in game gold can be P2W.
So, in conclusion of my first "troll post," let me just say that i don't mind cash shops as i see the need for them other then just to make money for the devs. You may hate me for my opinion, but thats just me. Is this the right direction for games to be going, who knows? But this looks like the way its going anyway.
