do not worry, your not the only one. Soon milions will follow.
On the other hand, your name couldn't be more appropriate.
What does their name mean?
Jelly is 12 year old 1200-rated pvp slang for jealous, regardless of whether or not he intended it that way. It just seems very apropos with his post. Sort of like asking him "u jelly br0 n00bl0rd lulzu" or however people who are compensating for how legitimately awful they are at games would say it.
Looking at the OPs list of games it seems like the problem might be less Tera and more that he does not like MMO's. But then again that is true with most of the players on this forum. They simply do not have the patience, attention span or maturity to play a MMO. They want to be constantly entertained and have everything given to them. Most of the players here, including the MMOROG>Com writers and staff just play MMOs in theory. They hype games up in their minds and on these boards, shout down all voices of reason, then when they play their dream game they quickly become bored and quit. A few months later they are bashing the game as they move on to hyping some other game. Sadly they have no clue what they want in a MMO or even why they left. Developers bend over backwards dumbing down games for these players and doing all they can to attract them at release.
Well said Zippy...
Really, well said? You do realize that if it wasn't for those very "entertain me" players, the genre would probably be close to if not already defunct. There certainly wouldn't be any more AAA games after SWG, if WoW hadn't come along and drawn in all of these new, paying customers. At best, you'd have a handful of indie niche games with very few people to group with as all of your hardcore buds would be spread out in the older games like EQ, UO, AC, AO and DAoC.
Obviously you are upset that you are outnumbered and therefore will not get to see the representation you feel your playstyle deserves. I can empathize with that, but I cannot stand your elitist attitude about current games being dumbed down and that casual gamers are clueless, immature, lack patience and have no attention span and that developers are stupid to be catering to casuals. The sheer arrogance of such statements boggles the mind. With that kind of attitude, you deserve your dying breed status in this genre.
The MMO industry was just doing fine before WoW <imo>
Evercrack was the game to play amoung many other decent titles then and most of them had a great following of players even till today.
When investors saw what Blizzard had done in 2004 - 2006 with their mmo, out rolls the WoW clone era.
So now it's a lack of maturity that keeps people from enjoying Tera? Never thought I'd see that as one of the excuses people make around here. Ridiculous.
As for patience, all I ever hear from hardcore Tera fans is that "No, no, keep playing til level 20, 30, etc." and it'll get fun. Maybe the issue isn't so much that people don't have patience but that the game isn't fun for them. Ever think of that?
No, it's a lack of maturity that keeps players from doing research, getting into "open" betas (such as they are) and essentially doing their due dilligence. Now, havign said that, I'm not going to be so arrogant as to say that everyone who tries a game without doing their research is immature. I'm sure the OP, is a good solid person. But there is a huge group of people who go into these games with set expectations, play them for a few minutes and can't wait to rush to forums to post their rage.
And I have absolutely no problem, issues, etc with people liking different things. I of all people, with my highly esoteric tastes that then swing to the highly ridiculous shouldn't be pointing fingers.
It is however getting a bit ridiculous that players use games as a way to bolster their self worth by aligning into camps and feeling they need to attack the other camp in order to justify their decisions. It's equally ridiculous for people to go into games with no sense of what that game is about and then realize it never was for them so they have to publish their ire for all to see.
When I started Lineage 2 at it's launch I wanted to try an online game. Just try. Tha'ts it. Everquest looked atrocious to me so that was out. I then saw screen shots of lineage 2 which looked amazing to me. I started to pour over the interwebz finding anything and everything about that game and coming to the conclusion that it seemed not for me. At all. But I decided to try it anyway becuase going into it knowing what it was about would allow me to lessen the rage when I had to grind up gold for an inflated economy and replace items that dropped on death. Being informed would prepare me for the non stop ganking I was going to experience.
And you know what? I was wrong. I loved it. All of it.
Tera is what it is. The selling point is not part of the box. The selling point is that the game does require players to work together at times. The beauty of it is that it also allows skilled players to set themselves against impossible tasks and persevere "solo".
When I, at lvl 40 "whatever" came across a set of three mobs that required at least another person to kill I did not run to the forums and say how bad the solo game was. My choices were find another or get it done.
I chose to perservere and I actually was able to kill that group after 6 or 7 deaths. It wasn't easy. But i did it.
Same with my first BAM. I decided to try to solo one and fifteen minutes into it, as a lancer, I realize that this was a task of perseverence. If I made one bad move I would have to recover. If I made two bad moves it was game over.
I was great for a long time until I died due to a bit of lag. Did I rush to forums to complain? Did I quit? Well, I like the game so I said "no" and I wasn't going too let that one challenge stop me. And I did it the next try.
The game is not for everyone and the questing leaves a lot to be desired. But if people want to lessen their anger they can at least ask people, do their research and even more importantly, be honest with themselves as to what they like and what they are going to hate. In my opinion the worst thing I can see is someone who has an axe to grind and goes into a game just looking for things to hate.
Again, none of this is aimed specifically at the OP. I do find it difficult that players dont' seem to have patience anymore and just want everything to be a relay race.
I feel sorry for TSW because many people are just not going to get it.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Big gamebreaker was that you needed groups? Could all this solo rpg players that like wow and gw 2 so much go back just to solo rpgs or let some of the last pieces of the word massive of mmoprg survive?
Well i made it to level 25 and for the first time today i couldn't face logging in . My copy of Tera has gone into PC desk drawer along with Age of Conan, SWTOR, Rift., LOTR and all the other turkeys i've bought and got bored of.
A few weeks back i put a very positive post about this game. It was something different, gorgeous looking and easy to play. I thought i wouldn't mind the grind and enjoyed it at first then it slowly dawned on me just how repetitive this game is.
The first dungeon Bastion of Lok was just unispiring. Mobs same as in the world with those annoying groups of tiny monster that follow you around all the time. End bosses were a mash of running around button bashing. Got fed up of constantly dodging attacks and having to run constantly after the boss.
Quests and mobs got samey. I thought i could grind through this as the combat was different but even that became stale and boring.
BIg gamebreaker for me was constantly having to group quests to kill BAMS. First bam was fun then having to kill 5 basilisks got tedious especially when it took forever to kill them. Not a solo friendly game.
Loot/gear visually is unappealing. I never got exxcited winning blue gear in dungoens as it all looks the same. crafting is boring and goes nowwhere unless you a fanboy.
So all in all if you ccan stand the grind then fine but i've had enough and my copy of Tera is destined to the MMO drawer of cobwebs never to be seen again.

I might also add i was a great fan of World PVP which began for me in Vanilla WOW. Yet a big immersion breaker for me was having to activate PVP in the world. Also the appeal of world PVP wore off after my 3rd battle. They simply last too long and most of the time you could mount up and escape. . I was on the busiest PVP server and found PVP to be non existment as most people learned after a few goes it was pretty dull and pointless.
And yes im probably burned out on grindy MMO's. We all reach a point where you just can't be bothered and i've reached mine. However i'll still stand to saying killing 5 basilisks in Tera is too much. I killed my fifth and thought NO MORE BAMS!!!!!
Theres a few things I wanted to mention in response to your posts. I am lvl 40 right now.
1. The boss of the LoK dungeon is the only one that runs around so much that I can think of that I have encountered.
2. Quests get much better near lvl 30 theres actually some story thrown in and the mobs get a little harder but then mid 30's when your in that desert area...the name escapes me right now....i love Tera and all but good god theres a billion quests in that desert even I disliked that part. (btw anyone know what in the world that huge creature looking thing is in the sky over that area?)
3. You do not have to do the BAMs if you do not want to I do not believe any of the story quests made me kill real BAMs. There were 2 that were like practice bams that you should be able to solo on any class.
4. Gear appearance from i've seen seems to be kind of tier based. Like I notice blues near the same item level are usually very similar. Greens of the same lvl are usually very similar etc. I don't think I have seen a blue item look like a green one but I could be mistaken. I play a human and most of the times I look good. Though there was this one piece of gear that was like...jean blue with brown patches...oh god that was the ugliest thing any character of mine has ever worn.
5. If you are coming into Tera for the PvE and you have done your first BAM at equal of less level (don't judge the game sitting there fighting BAMs multiple levels under you unless ur soloing them) and you have also done the first instance and you still do not enjoy the PvE then I suggest you stop playing. It gets a little better from what i have experienced but not enough. If Tera ever goes free to play it will be because of the PvE'ers not the PvP'ers. Theres a reason the pvp servers all have a good population.
6. The only aspect of PvP that you have to activate is your ability to make your attacks hit other players. Without this you would be accidently killing people left and right on many classes. Could you imagine a sorc fireblasting a mob and some poor lowbie rides by on his mount? KABOOOM 20k dmg instant death. PvP is setup the way it is for a reason. A good player can and will escape a gank from bad players. It depends on class though if my slayer catches a lvl 40 off guard and I actually land my startling kick or a knock down hes in trouble. If I land both he probably wont live. Diff classes get diff things to help them with that as you level. For example my slayer didnt get a sprint until lvl 32...sure he has that forward charge but the sprint makes a huge difference. If you are going to gank effectively you need to be coordinated with whoever you are ganking with specially if you don't have a lot of abilities between you 2 to catch up or CC.
I was a top dueler in UO, above average in AC (what can I say I couldn't level fast enough to keep up with these hardcore guys), gladiator in WoW. In my opinion...from what I have seen so far Tera has the potential to be one of the greatest PvP games of all time.
Edit: Would like to remind everyone not to judge the PvP by doing in town duels. PvP without unit collision is a huge disappointment.
Took me like 10 minutes in one of the open betas to realize what the OP realized at level 25. Kill 8 trees. Oh now go kill those other trees but bring me 6 branches. You're back with the branches? Ok good now go kill me some deer. I logged out and uninstalled right then and there. You paid $50 for a dodge ability. It's the same grind fest you've been playing for 10+ years with the same end-game and same gankers who feel like tough guys because they one shot you while you had 10% hp after you took on 3 mobs.
And to the guy saying we feel like we should be entertained, imagine that! When we pay $50 for an 'entertainment' product, we better damn well be entertained! You've all been so conditioned to accept that you're going to have to work in a game that you blindly accept it as fact! No entertainment product is ever going to be perfect but that time spent not having fun should be minimal. I shouldn't have to, and I refuse to have to level XX to start having fun. The sooner you all realize that, the sooner FUN games will be the norm.

And when evercrack was big people complained about how IT changed MMORPGs with its campfest second job way of playing which destroyed what came before it thanks to the influx of people that didnt understand what MMOs were all about.
"real" games for "real" players who played the "real" way MMOs were meant to be played. Games like UO and Meridian 59 which was based on "real" blah blah blah.
The only thing that has changed between arguments is the name of the game being blamed and the year its being posted in. Everyone thinks that they and only they play the games the right way or like the right games and none of them are dealing with reality.
Reality is, Tera has dodge...thats one of the few things it has that makes it a LITTLE different from other MMOs and it isnt even all of them because dodge is not a new feature.
Dodge does not make it better than WoW, because...the core of the actual game is the same...generic. Open world does not make it better than...SWTOR themepark, because what can you do in that games open world? the same damn generic quests with the option to explore a whole hell of a lot of the same. Tera's open world is just a larger version of that games themepark...if the open world doesnt ADD anything different, there is nothing to brag about.
Argue actuality, not potentiality based on a word.
if I play an open world game, that open world better actually HAVE SOMETHING in it thats different otherwise thats a lot of time spent creating something that is offereing nothing special.

You do realize Tera combat is way more than just dodge. Does the combat make it better than WoW? Yes. To a PvE'er? Probably not.
tonyd,
Tera has decent character customization when creating the char. There is some customization on the way you fight based on glyph and crystals. I don't mind the lack of major gameplay changes like talents in wow for example changing a priest to a shadow priest as long as the result is a balanced game. However I care more for the PvP than anything else I could certainly understand how people that do not would dislike many aspects of Tera.
Elitist nonsense. Most of this community is fine playing Minecraft, Terraria, Skyrim, Mass Effect, and any other RPG out there. The problem is that the MMOrpg genre and the RPG genre do not interconnect in almost any significant manner. Its amazing how different an MMOrpg is to an rpg. When i ponder this abreviation I wonder why that when you tack on the letters "MMO" that half a games content. playability, and immersion get thrown out the window. A game like Skyrim throws you into a world and says "hey you, do whatever the fuck you want to do and by the way, there is a dragon behind you". Most MMO's say " hey you, do these quest chains in this fucking order or grind mobs for hours for less experience, oh and by the way, mobs always spawn in the exact same location that you killed them last time".
That's because the audience of mmo's is actually different than rpg's. And stop using this forum or any forum for your references and talk to people who play these games and don't post on forums.
Do you think Morrowind was great? Well I do. Espeicially because I didn't have a big x telling me where I was going and that one had to go looking for your quest objectives. I'll add, to the individual who said "that as soon as people start demanding fun games we will get more fun games - paraphrase" that this was fun.
Now talk to people who play games and what do we hear? Too much walking in Morrowind (no fast travel except by silt striders) couldnt' find the quest objectives and had to walk around to get them.
Same with skyrim. I spoke to a guy who said that one of the things he hated about skyrim was the wandering around. And same with Vanguard which has a lot more walking/traveling than most games. Heck, fast travel was added to major areas because people complained. Originally it was a huge walking world game.
Let's move to lotro. Earlier in the game's career you would get quest givers who would say "go north and you will see a large copse of trees. A bit east of that is a cave and there you will find...".
But people hated it. So they then added the glowing areas to the map to show you where everything is. Many complained and many said "well, if you don't like it don't use it" which of course speaks to a larger problem in these games, and even if you didn't want to use it the quest givers stopped using directions or landmarks in their quests. At least from what I saw.
So "no" the audience for these games has changed and much of this is actually due to WoW which brought in a large demographic of players who never, ever would have played an online game.
They want set objectives, consider traveling a time sink and are reticent to do anything unless there is a reward tied into it.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Duh tow different genre, everything is limited when you put things in a MMO enviorment. Sorry if you can't play god like you can in single player games but truth is you can't have every single mmorpg player playing god. There will always be limition when your playing with massive amount of people. just because you don't get to do shit your way doesn't mean its not a rpg. Look at all the eastern rpgs, most of them lead you through a series of events, not same as western rpg but sitll rpg none the less.
To compound the problems with the rpg to mmo conversions, lately developers have taken half of the role playing aspect out of the game. Once upon a time, when I attempted to play a roleplaying game I had to create a character. Todays developers seem to forget that creating a character is part of playing a role. Games like City of Heroes do it half right, being an old game it still manages to give you one of the most visually impressive and broad character creation systems. The downside to City of heroes is that it gives you limited options as far as combat style goes. Lets put Tera into this context. Tera gives you very limited options on how your character looks, little to no options on what weapon you will wield, and almost no options when defining how your character fights as compared to another member of your own class. A first person shooter such as Team Fortress 2 manages to give you more options to visually customize your character and manipulate the way that character approaches combat. Why in the fucking world would you develop an MMORPG that offers less control to the player than a FPS? Add a static world to Team Fortress 2 and I would say that it is much more of an MMORPG than Tera is.
I lol so hard, who said charater customization is a must in rpgs? I'll bring it up again since you appearly only live in your own little world and knows nothing of whats outside it. There many rpgs where you can't even touch how your character looks its set in stone, they still rpgs. Also TF2 most customizable? That a joke? First of all how your character look is set, heavy will always look like a heavy, just what different hat you decide to put on it. Its call vanity item and almost every single mmorpgs have it. They just don't put it in until after the game has been out for a while. How many hats did TF2 have when it came out? Until like 1-2 years ago when they added in TF2's cash shop it didn't have that large varity of stuff either. It was added in to help the game trasnison to f2p model,
Also every one's fighting style is differen't you don't need different skill and weaposn to fight differently, thats how action combat works. If you play street fighter every single ryu or ken doesn't fight same as the next even though move set are exactly the same. Because action combat allow you to use skill differently.
In short, most of us here have all the patience and maturity necessary to play an MMORPG. The problem is that the RPG is strangely missing from almost all MMORPG's...
No its missing for what you define as RPG which is a very narrow western definiation.

Stop right there and never come back. If you can make that statement means you knows absoutly nothing about the game and should just stop spreading lies.

Which is funny because of how many other people are saying the EXACT same thing as me. Tera is NOT the first MMORPG with Dodge and action oriented combat. Tera combat is not offering anything new in terms of combat to anyone other than those with vastly limited expierence in the MMORPG field...to WoW players its like OMG ive never ever seen this before its RADICALLY new...
It is NOT NEW. You dont know this because of your limited MMORPG experience...hell most people on Tera's forums dont even know that it was released over a YEAR AGO in Asia...you actually think its a NEW game.

Ya ofc AoC DCUO and game such as dragon nest and vindictus all touched upon it. However none them manage to bring it to the lvl of polished Tera has. Same is said to most game, they are nothing new they just take ideas and polished them to the next lvl.
Ofc i knew it was released over a year ago, i played KTera, just because it was out there doesn't mean its not new to us since msot of us can't play KTera. Also wtf does been new have to do with anything? The combat is great new or not.

Yes! You have hit the nail on the button! I couldn't agree more. If you look at his original post he was complaining how dull and lifeless SWTOR was in comparison....very telling.
very telling?..i'd have to agree with him...both swtor and tera are boring. and i, as well as most posters here do know what makes a good mmo. even if its good in their eyes, to them its good. people will devote endless hours to games they like, while others wont give it 10 hours. I know exactly what i want in an mmo. i played EQ for 2 years. i played daoc for 3 years, i played wow for almost 4 years...why? because they had fun stuff to do. why did i leave? because i like change or just got burnt out. not because i cant be pleased.
and by the way, nails dont have buttons
Yep couldn't agree more...
I really find it odd that so many posters think that you just must be burned out on MMORPGs if you didn't like the huge string of quest-hub games to come out in the last 6 years or so.
Some of us just realize that MMORPGs can be so much more than quest hub games and we're frankly tired of it.
Much like the OP, I disliked AoC, SWTOR, TERA...many others, and yet...I actually like GW shocking! Looks l wasn't burned out on MMORPGs after all. I just wanted one that actually deviated from the terrible quest-hub system.
same boat here, to me its just to many are so similar or just overall so uninspiried i get bored with them quickly. Doesn't matter if its a MMO, FPS, RTS. Many people here get all butthurt when you throw around GW2 but playing in beta for that one was really the first game in a very long time that sparked my love for MMOs again. To me its just the incredible attention to detail they put into that game, while others could care less about the little details to me it really shows a developers passion for their game and not just another copy and paste job with a fancy coat of paint... but maybe were just the minority here who knows...

Incredible attention to detail like what? I logged into that beta with friends and we couldn't even play together because of "overflow servers" doing story quests together was very annoying and when we zone out of those things we get seperated yet again. I could forgive that...its beta...I could forgive the crappy fps its beta... but when the games combat in my opinion is inferior to even wow's then thats when I draw the line. I played both an elementalist and a thief and neither had very good mechanics in my opinion.
You do realize Tera combat is way more than just dodge. Does the combat make it better than WoW? Yes. To a PvE'er? Probably not.
Yes it has more than dodge...is that "more than dodge" something not in staple MMOs? No.
Did you know that GW2 has dodge? Did you know that the dodge actually does more than dodge?
Did you know that when say an Elementalist dodges in GW2 it...leaves a trail of fire to burn following enemies if you are using a fire skillset? Or leave a trail of ice to slow enemies down? Did you know that dodge can hamstring an enemy to slow them down if you are using the right weapon for it?
Did you know that Tera's dodge is a plain dodge offered up by more than a few action MMORPGs where the combat is almost an exact copy of what Tera is using...did you know that being able to press a dodge button is actually no harder than...running in a freaking circle around someone in WoW trying to get them to miss. You think it makes PvP better because you never played an actual skill based PvP game before...most of you would soil yourself if you had a single PvP fight in Asherons Call that could last 30 minutes against a single person. Yes, a 30 minute long fight...no dodge, locked on spells/melee and over 3000 spells to fling with no classes, anyone could have anything trained and you dont know what until you get smacked with something and the person that wins is actually winning because of his SKILL, gear didnt come into it.
PvP is good to you in Tera thanks to a decade of really bland PvP games making you somehow think dodge is a radical idea.
Again. The core game of Tera is actually no different than what most staple MMOs have. bland grind based gameplay, even the PvP offers nothing, cookie cutter classes, and story is right out of something you expect to read by someone from planet 3468...

Sounds like someone who bought into the hype and didn't do their proper research on the game. And to say it's combat is inferior to WoW lolololol. Sounds like you want WoW clones and not innovative new and fresh MMOs.
I played GW2 both an elementalist and a thief....im a bit confused are you actually suggesting that GW2 has better combat than Tera? The fact that some classes have an ability that jumps to the side is very very minor...are you sure you played Tera? Running around in a circle trying to get wow players to miss...miss what? an auto attack a cone attack? Why did you even bring wow into this? Its not even close to the same thing. You didn't really PvP in tera did you?
I PvPd in both UO and AC. In my opinion Tera has better combat than both of them. There was dodging spells in AC, melee locked on to people, AC had a lot to do with level not just skill.
same boat here, to me its just to many are so similar or just overall so uninspiried i get bored with them quickly.

So you are saying an elementalist in GW2 has better and funner combat mechanics than WoW's mage? I did a lot of research on GW2 before it came out.

The MMO industry was just doing fine before WoW <imo>
Evercrack was the game to play amoung many other decent titles then and most of them had a great following of players even till today.
When investors saw what Blizzard had done in 2004 - 2006 with their mmo, out rolls the WoW clone era.

Big gamebreaker was that you needed groups? Could all this solo rpg players that like wow and gw 2 so much go back just to solo rpgs or let some of the last pieces of the word massive of mmoprg survive?
Was that before the prologue was introduced?
all games have quest all games have grinding all mmos atleast
Argue actuality, not potentiality based on a word.
if I play an open world game, that open world better actually HAVE SOMETHING in it thats different otherwise thats a lot of time spent creating something that is offereing nothing special.

jtcgs,
You do realize Tera combat is way more than just dodge.

No its missing for what you define as RPG which is a very narrow western definiation.
Stop right there and never come back. If you can make that statement means you knows absoutly nothing about the game and should just stop spreading lies.
what did you expect? it's just another hardcore grinder from korea. *shrug*

I expected people like you coming here making up lies =D
Ya ofc AoC DCUO and game such as dragon nest and vindictus all touched upon it. However none them manage to bring it to the lvl of polished Tera has. Same is said to most game, they are nothing new they just take ideas and polished them to the next lvl.
Ofc i knew it was released over a year ago, i played KTera, just because it was out there doesn't mean its not new to us since msot of us can't play KTera. Also wtf does been new have to do with anything? The combat is great new or not.

What game has action combat any where near as good as Tera's?
