Game of the Year for a game that even the press agrees has highly flawed combat? It's got great storyline and some neat quests yeah, but that's not enough. I'm not sure how long those great quests will hold people with that combat constantly getting in the way. That's just not GotY material, dudes.
Still a good game, though. Someone said it earlier, it's more likely to end up most "improved" game. My bet is it'll have a fairly smooth release in terms of bugs, and as the game exists, they'll continue tuning and updating and hopefully, get it to the point it really needs to be. Then, we'll talk.
Right now, I don't see anything beating GW2. It has elements that other games do better, definitely, but unlike those other games, there's nothing it does ~badly~. Everything else has some sort of toss-up or sacrifice involved; yeah the combat's great but the questiing sucks! Questing is great but combat is terrible! Voice overs and content but PvP blows! Etc., etc., etc,.
8's across the board will still win against a 10 and a bunch of 5's.
Not everyone is a fan of Guild Wars 2's combat mechanics either. In fact, we've yet to see any mainstream or indie MMO do really well with action combat in an RPG setting. I'm waiting to see if Tera can pull it off in three months time or see it plummet as people get annoyed with the combat system that doesn't sit well with games that are intended to be played for long periods of time.
Though, don't get me wrong, TSW has some really awesome features that I really like. I think TSW will do well in it's own right, but it's not the type of game that will do well mainstream.

I think people a drastically under estimating the depth of the TSW combat system based on their one weekend of play, which is understanable. We have not seen an mmo with this level of variation ever.
oh and mind showing where the press said the combat is "highly flawed?" I'm just messing with you I know you can't because that hasn't been said.
edit - You can also move while doing all your abilities. There is no stopping for 2 seconds while you cast. If I'm not mistaken this has never been done before either.
If TSW has bad animations take a look at GW2... I think GW2 will be a great game, but GW2 loyalist in this thread may not know it, but they live in a glass house. I'm not say their animations are bad, but they are certainly no better than TSW's.
Take a look at this video someone posted in GW2 forums.
Well, I think that if you like Adventure/Roleplaying games with strong storytelling (almost a mix between a movie and a game) and at the same time you had enough of plain boring MMO's with just killing and gathering, I think this is going to be something for you.
I also think that the market for these kind of games is bigger than many believe. Wouldn't be surprised if TSW became game of the year.
GW 2, you walk through a town and simply hear people talking about things. They are talking about the various things in the world. "vampre crypt... i don't believe that". So now you got out into the world and look for it, no dynamic quest, not yet. You go down and you start to distrurb the tombs, then its a full on adventure as you go to eliminate the quest.
Or you could...ya know...talk to a scout and he points you RIGHT WHERE YOU NEED TO GO.
I have two words for you. Kingsmouth Code. Now go and give me an example of GW2 topping that. You won't find one. Period.
There were quests that were "locked" and then mysterious unlocked (in the junkyard) as i leveled my weapon.
Okay believe what you want to believe, but like oyu have been told some quest were lock for the Open Beta group. As soon as you leave creation. You can go anywhere, and pick up whatever quest you like. There are no restrictions based on skill level.
Iv'e played through kingsmouth with a couple characters so far and have yet to find a "locked" quest because I wasn't high enough skill level
There were quests that were locked (near the airport in kingsmouth and the junkjard) i assumed they were locked csause of beta. But later in the game they were unlocked. I can only presume because my weapons were higher level, as idid nothing else in the game to make them unlock.
The quests were not related with other tiers, for instance, reading a note on a bus, i don't know what that had to do with anything else i did. But later on, i could read the note and get the quest.
Also hate that there are things that u cant interact with until a specific moment. So much gasloline in the main hub. Why is that even clickable to begin with. I wanted to have a fallout 3 moment.
there is an item quest where you get a flamethrower after completing it (the flamethrower lasts forever, you have to equip it to use), each time you use it, you consume gasoline.
I dont know about that all "Game of the year" title. TSW has potential, its different than most mmos and there lies the biggest chance for Funcom. I played beta and I was surprised how game feels good. If they keep in this direction and dont mess up the lunch (like they did with Conan, which is only now feel like a real mmo), they have bright future for TSW.

You can hardly see the actual gameplay, how the hell is anyone supposed to give an opinion on the animation quality of GW2 when you can't hardly see the actual animations!?
Keep your TSW-fanboy campaign going bcbully, it is very amusing and it reminds me of how much I [mod edit] this community.

after playing both for a decent amount of time overall yes GW2 is better animated all around to me.. but overall TSW isn't really that bad, some issues here and there and the clothes really need some more physics in both games imho. GW2 isn't miles ahead in the animation department by any means but overall its a bit better and spell effects in GW2 are immensly better.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

I am not sure what you are talking about. Which animations were bad and why are you using a guy who says he is lagging from playing the game on a labtop to prove a point?
Edit: Also that guy was a really bad player who ironically thought he knew alot. He think auto attacking using the 3 button is somehow a good tactics with double pistols on thief. He was pre-disposed to dislike the game because we want it to be GW1 and therefore has completely neutered his ability to figure out how the game works.
Just cant trust Funcom. AoC scarred me for life on that company.
Yeah, being out $60 is something well worthy of throwing tantrums over.
Oh, wait.
I've fought people over less. lol
-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.- -And on the 8th day, man created God.-
Let me start by saying, I don't think TSW will have the number of players GW2 will have maybe not even the amount Tera has. TSW appeals to a certain taste, an aquired taste if you will. TSW does that taste oh so well, better than any mmo to date. The ability to create this dish will garner Funcom & TSW critical acclaim much like "Slum Dog Millionair" did in the film industry.
Like the taste or not, there is something very special in TSW, something different. The Devil is in the details my friends, and the Devil is in TSW.
If they pay enough to some website / magazine or at game expo - then they will be "awarded" GOTY title by this website or magazine or at some game expo.
I am amazed that there are still people that care about "GOTY" titles that are given left and right. Hell that they care about any titles. Same thing is in other industries.
Hey if any dev studio want their game to be called "Game of The Year" - I will give this title to game at low price of 15$.
lol wha?!? Between GW2, TERA, and SWTOR, the TSW will be GOTY when pigs fly. Sure it will like have a nitche community base and will likely be a solid game and sure it brings a new setting and it is intresting in that regard. The classless system ,which in reality all that brings is a lack of need for alts with no different story lines to follow say compared to SWTOR of GW2 except maybe the three factions which have replayability value, and is very limitied I say when you compare it to say GW2 as many trees or pie wheels simpely don't mash well wtih most of the wheel pieces. Other than that it is a rehash of many age old mechanics.
The classless system is integral to the game, its more than "no need to make alts", you NEED to change deck, its an integral part of the takes progression system. For the first 1/4 of the game your increasing in vertical power, after that its all horizontal progression, instead of gating harder mode pve behind exponential increases in raw power through tiered gear progression, they gate the content by players needing multiple specs, e.g. 1 fight will need everyone to be rdps, the next fight will need 3 tanks, the fight after a traditional tank, healer, support, 2 dps.
Originally posted by ShakyMo It's a lot better game than swtor. It's an actual mmo for a start. Both tsw and gw2 are a breath of fresh air after so many wow clones with a gimmick.
Agreed, but Funcoms problems is that they lack the programmers Blizzard and Arenanet have.
TSW wont be the game of the year because of that, it just lack the polish. That does not mean it wont be fun to play, but with a single great lead programmer FCs games would have become huge.
Loke: It has bugs, but it ain't anything like conan bug wise. I would put in on a par with swtor bug wise, although it massively beats swtor performance wise, you can have way more players on screen without grinding to a halt.

I'm sure some website somewhere will make that claim.
MSNBC awarded Star Wars: The Old Republic as game of the year
The game has received a 9.0/10 "Amazing" rating from IGN.com[72]
G4TV gave a review of 5/5 and praised the game for "Top notch music and voice acting" and "hundreds of hours of content."
So, yea.....

from what I've seen and played GW2 will be GOTY.
This ^.

I hope TSW ll be exception
