If Blizzad banned everyone who bought or sold gold in WOW they would lose at least 50% of their entire playerbase.
An that is bad how? All the extra work that goes into dealing with the issues that gold selling bringgs into the picture, the issues that it causes for players of the game that actually play the game. Over time i am extremely sure that they couldd recupe that loss in players, an have a much safer game overall for those players both old, an new gamers in the game. What is funny is at even a 50% loss that is still better, then most of the mmos running now. Igf you don't punish an remove problematic people, and situations in your game you just pass those issues an people on to your playerbase to deal with. Also with a game as high of a popularity and visability as wow, you will need to be alot harsher then other games to keep control as your going to be the main target for people looking to cashin at whatever cost.
Again, I'm not condoing buying gold from third-party sellers, and I am glad that Blizzard is enforcing their policies. However, if WOW were to lose 4.5 million subs, that would be disatrous for the game. Like it or hate it, Blizzard can't ban everyone who does something wrong because they need their subs; can't bite the hand that feeds you.
What is very telling is that usually it is the most vicious of "righteous" people who tend to be the worst offenders. I'm not saying you're buying gold, but I'm somewhat shocked at the level of vicious hatred in this thread; especially towards someone who has admitted to wrong doing and will no longer be doing it. If the OP wasn't changing his ways and was going to continue bying gold, then by all means, tear him to pieces.
Asuran24, surely you've benefited from somone giving you a second chance. Unless you've never made a single mistake in your life. All I'm asking is that we be linient with the OP, give him a second chance, and ecourage him as he moves on from his mistakes.
I have to say, in a game like WOW I dont think buying gold is a big deal. It does saturate the economy a little but, worse things have happened.
My GF has a great time in WOW, manipulating the AH. It's a hobby for her to go into a game and ruin the economy through tools like the AH. In WOW, she had close to 3 million gold not including the value of mats. Some days she would just log on to buy out an entire resource only to hold it hostage until the weekend. I wasn't broke either but I didn't have that kind of gold.
I remember having to spend 5k just to level enchanting about 20 points just because she had bought out the mats I needed and re-auctioned them at ridiculous prices. Of course I got my refund later... In gold, but I think that's far worse then buying a measily 30k. People need 30k after players like my GF are finished EFF'ing shit up.
Then they mention the negative impact of buying gold.... There is always an opposite argument. One of those being player happyness. It's not like dailys and leveling crafting are particularly fun, matter of fact, I was not impressed with either system. So as much as they want to talk about negative impacts, if i'm not having fun and a little gold could fix that, then whats the big deal, it's a video game.
Agreed, I think some people here are reacting too strongly and quite frankly makeing a fool of themselves. Like Trionicus said, worst things have happened in WOW. I think people here need to take a chill pill, relax, and commend the OP for manning up to his mistakes and moving on.
The issues is less of buying the gold, and more of what cost is paid to allow you to buy that gold. How many other player's enjoyment of the game was impeaded or completely destroyed to produce that gold you needed, such as thru compormised accounts, selling stolen gear, characters, and well the hard earned progression of another players character/time. Now yeah not every gold is going to be coming from a group that hacks accounts, sells characters, and such yet the more you buy the better chance it will be coming from those sources. Go tell the guy/girl that had all there character stripped of their gear, gold, and maybe even stolen an sold that it is alright since it made you able to enjoy your game more with the gold that was produced from these activities. Good for those that come to understand that they were foolish for buying gold, come cleann, but then just like rl you also better be ready to take responsibility for your actions. That means getting banned, suspended, losing all the gear or progression you gained via that gold, or what not.

And the OP did man up and took responsability for his actions, the gold he bought with real money was taken away; I think that's sufficient. If he keeps doing it then yes, I would argue for WOW to ban him temporarily.
Are not the vast majority of the accounts that are hacked from those who bought gold or character lvl'ing? In that case, I would say just punishment for buying gold. To those who got hacked without buying any gold, WOW does compensate and restore the lost items (if the hack was of no fault of their own).
There is nothing wrong in being against buying gold and wanting people who do it to "get what they deserve", however, some of the things said on this post about the OP were way out of line. I would ask for an apology to the OP but it's not my place since I wasn't the one being attacked.

Yes i have been given a second chance before, yet that does not entail i did not serve my time for what i did. Just because i repent for my action, an pledge to not do it again, does not mean i should be able to get away without punishment that befits the rules as laided down. I actually refuse to allow that kind of thing of just saying "I am sorry, and i won't do it again.", since it does not give me any reason to not do it again when the ich comes back. It is like i was always told "If you are not willing to do the time, do not do the crime.". I commmend anyone that comes forth yet someone actually wanting to make amends will take their punish, and seek to regain what they lost thru their actions.
Worse things have been done? lol That in no way makes it right or excusable.
What a great thing for a criminal to say! Well, hey there are worse crimes out there!
@OP admitting mistake... sure, great. But he wasn't even penalized (kept the gold) for it. Saying this under the anonymity of the internet doesn't take any courage at all. Warning others not to buy gold is a nice sentiment but people buy gold all the time regardless. So I'm not going to say "good for you OP!" but I'm not condemning him either.

You claim we're being "angry, false and empty righteous" ......As opposed to your self righteous diatribes in this thread? The OP did something that is considered cheating, he should be punished. We've all made mistakes, the difference is, there usually aren't bleeding hearts like you to say oh it's ok, he shouldn't be punished, he's learned from it.
I could use a real world analogy to show you how rediculous your stance is. Just because he anominously admitted to doing something wrong on an internet forum (wow what courage) and stated he would not do it again should not be seen as any kind of redemption.
The dude should be banned. The fact that Blizz didn't permaban him straight away just furthers my opinion that Blizz have lost their way.
Worse things have been done? lol That in no way makes it right or excusable.

Fair enough... better than what others have said lol.
In my erlier post I was mistaken, I thought that they had taken his gold, I now realize I was incorrect. In light of that, I guess I would defer to WOW since they are the ones whose offense buying gold is ultimately against; technically buying and selling wow IP without their consent.
As to the comment about worst things been done, I certainly do not believe in that when it comes to real life (as in not in a game). Regardless, you're right, it in no way does it make it right or excusable. The comment, however, was directed at the type of hate the OP was receiving from some of the posters on this thread; as in trying to put things into context. That's what all.
Worse things have been done? lol That in no way makes it right or excusable.

I am.
It's like cheating on your girlfriend. She may say "I forgive you, but..lol...no she doesn't". The relationship is essentially over...Just like his playtime with WoW is tarnished forever. He is branded a cheater. He needs to move on to a different game and learn the lessons he learned here (if he learned anything at all..which I highly doubt)

Another issue it is not his first time (even said they have bought several times.), just at most maybe the first time they caught him doing it. As much as people make it oout that only those that get hacked are people that buy gold or characters, there are other ways of getting the info. There are young kids that get their accounts stolen thru e-mail scams. Also the vast numbers of guilds that have their guild banks wiped out by a compromised account holder. All of these effect other players and impead or impact their enjoyment of the game for the sake of other players enjoyment. when theydo a compensation an give back what you lost it can take afew hours at most which is alot of down time for some players, and yet just because you can fix the damage does that make the act any kinder or impeading to the player it happened to.
The real question is did they take the gold away from the op. I heard stories of folks buying gold only to log in and find that they been stripped of all their gold.
Heh, while I can't condone what the OP has done, there are a lot of self-righteous hypocrites on these forums. I guarantee all of those that have thrown the stone at the OP have done something dispicable in life themselves. Its human nature to fault...his mistake was coming here to talk about it. If you keyboard crusaders worked this hard on things outside of the internet the world would probably be a better place. Go back to neglecting your families while you play your game...lol.

QuicklyScott, I never said he shouldn't be punished, all I'm saying is that I don't think he deserves the kind of hate he's received from people on this thread. By no means am I condoning his actions, and had WOW punished him, I would have agreed with it completely. However, WOW decided not to punish him and instead issued him a warning. Regardless of what anyone of us here says, it is ultimately up to WOW to decide how they choose to punish their players who break their rules.
I'm not calling for redemption or that he not be punished, I'm just calling for civility on this thread and for people to realize that instead of tearing people down we should be encouraging them to be doing the right thing. The OP is not yours to punish, as a wow player, his actions were WOW's to punish.

i'm writing this post just to tell u guys, if u plan to buy gold, just hold it, its not worth it.
it's embarrassing, i ma casual pvp player, farming gold is the last thing i d ever do. i've bought gold for several times, but last Sunday, i ordered 30k from a site, planning to buy a vial of the sands from ah. i thought bliz wouldn't dig small amount transactions, it turns out i m wrong.
Bliz really took my by surprise, this Monday i got an ingame mail from customer service, after i read the email, thx god, it's just warning, they didnt take away the gold as i spent on buying vial of sands, but i m sure they ll suspend or ban me if i do it again, so i ll quit buying gold.
below is Blizzard's email notification.
----- Forwarded Message ----- From: "WoWAccountAdmin@blizzard.com" To: ******@yahoo.com Sent: Monday, July 30, 2012 2:47 PM Subject: World of Warcraft - Notice Regarding Purchased Gold
Greetings,
Account Name: *********(my account, lol)
In light of some recent activity on your World of Warcraft account, we’d like make sure you’re aware of the negative impact that buying gold from third-party companies has on the World of Warcraft community -- as well as the potential consequences for players who are found to be using such services.
Every day, we encounter players who have been victims of in-game scams or whose Battle.net accounts have been stolen, and who log in one day to find their characters’ inventories have been stripped of gold and other valuable items. The overwhelming majority of these scams and thefts are conducted by unethical third-party companies that sell stolen gold to other players for real money. Accounts of players who choose to buy gold and support these exploitive companies may be subject to a variety of account penalties, including the removal of purchased gold so it can be returned to the rightful character.
Third-party gold-selling companies frequently prey upon dedicated players -- often including their own customers -- without regard to the disruption their actions cause to the game and other World of Warcraft players. Ultimately, without players’ support, these companies have no way to continue their unethical actions, and that’s why we encourage the community to refrain from using their services.
Additional information on the negative impact of purchasing gold, as well as some important information on how you can protect your account from theft, can be found on our website at: http://us.battle.net/wow/services/anti-gold/
Thank you for helping us keep World of Warcraft a fun and safe environment for all of our players.

Psychow, how do you you haven't bought anything from the AH that didnt' result from gold buying? Ever buy a potion? How do you know it wasn't made by a gold buyer or sold/bought by a gold buyer? Most likely there is something from gold buying that has been involved in your raiding as well.

Lets not confuse Real Life mistakes with cheating in a game.

What? You are calling him a cheater because he [may have] unknowingly bought AH item that was sold by a cheater?
Now I'm thinking you are the one wanting to rain down the hate. Not Psyhow.

guys... this isn't real life, this is a game. a few hours from gameplay, while waiting to be compensated, maybe its the best thing for some of these players. Again, I'm not condoing buying gold, and I'm glad that wow enforces its policy rules, but I think someo of the people here are taking it a bit too far. As for the young kids who get their accounts hacked... that has nothing to do with people buying gold from wow. Most likely the hacker was trying to access bank information, consdiering they are just kids, the hacker probably just settled with the game info. None of this justifies buying gold, but I do think some people here need to take it a bit easy.
I would say more that alot of people that have done wrong, done their time, and made amends would want to see others do the same. Why not hold everyone to the same measurement, and treat them the same that has done the same crime or activity. I know many people that feel the same who did crimes went to do their time, and now feel that allowing others to get away witjout making the same amends as them, cheapens their actions to make amends for the same action.

Agreed, I think some people here are reacting too strongly and quite frankly makeing a fool of themselves. Like Trionicus said, worst things have happened in WOW. I think people here need to take a chill pill, relax, and commend the OP for manning up to his mistakes and moving on.
I completely agree with you.
Seams to me the op got off light.
Then your guild's raiding accomplishments are tarnished. Congratulations on beating the game by cheating.
Bots = cheating.
Buying gold = cheating
Downing Raid bosses while using supplies obtained by using purchased gold or mats from bots = cheating.
I have a full time job too. I don't cheat.
I sometimes wonder how many gold sellers work for a subsidiary of Blizzard Entertainment
I agree. That's why I said many of them are just filled with empty righteous anger. They forget that they themselves have made mistakes and call for the "hanging" of others; shame.
Psychow, how do you you haven't bought anything from the AH that didnt' result from gold buying? Ever buy a potion? How do you know it wasn't made by a gold buyer or sold/bought by a gold buyer? Most likely there is something from gold buying that has been involved in your raiding as well.
He also is fully engaged on company business every second of every day at work unless on a company mandated break or lunch. Quite the model citizen, we salute you!
*sigh...
Common guys, are we really comparing wow to a girlfriend? sad... so sad.
Lets not confuse Real Life mistakes with cheating in a game.
Plus I've never done anything wrong. Just ask my mom...it was always my friends who did it...
