You think that is bad.. wait for when they demand your account information and password so they can use your character just in case you are NOT online when they need it.. LOL
The golden age of guilds is over. There used to be a time when they could get away with the strict requirements, but at this point the guilds need players more than players need guilds.
Not only that, but I'm seeing a kind of backlash against voice, in general, amongst players these days. People who used to game with it have found that it detracts just as much as it adds value to the gameplay.
The solution seems to be so glaringly simple and obvious, I'm surprised nobody has done it already. Let the devs informally label some servers "TeamSpeak preferred", some ":Ventrillo preferred", some "Mumble preferred" and some "Text Only." That simple step would solve the vast majority of problems, both for guilds and perspective guild members.
Yes, let's spread the community once more... Next step : A solo-oriented preferred server and a group-oriented server.
Communication-specific servers don't spread communities. They build communities.
Because the one who won't stick a headset in his ear already isn't in the same community as the person who is on TeamSpeak...even if they play on the same server. Because we can't be in a community with one another if we can't communicate with one another, because of a clash of personal preferences.
What game has communication-specific servers?
None that I am aware of, but it would be a great idea for a game to do it.

Yea I hate the chat thing, breaks the immersion of the game for me too. Besides, I game in the same room as my wife while she games...if we both were tied in with ears/voice we would never acknowledge each other's existence.
I only use voice coms when needed such as in dungeons or PVP, Sometimes I log in to talk but not often, I rather write, hearing some drunk guy babbling how fu drunk he is kinds ruins my immersion when playing, or listen to some idiot who has voice activation enabled so everytime he breaths I hear it or his kids screamin in the other room.
Sadly this is the world we live in. People have been led to believe that their every thought is special, unique, and worthy of sharing with the entire world (yes I'm aware that posting this is exactly the behavior I'm talking about).
I'm perfectly willing to mic-up for groups or raids or PvP, it's just so much more efficient, but I almost never talk and almost always exclude myself from the mundane daily drivel that pours forth from guild mates during routine days. So much so in fact that in most guilds I have belonged to it becomes a bragging point if you've ever gotten me to talk or heard my voice.
As one of the above posters said, it's their guild and their rules and I couldn't agree more. Any guild that wants its members to engage in such mindless banter is not one that I'd be interested in joining anyway.
I don't understand the fuss, but maybe I approach games from a different perspective, and the use of voice chat is what enables my particular group of friends to play with the coordination and delivery of communication that we need to win. That's ultimately why people use voice comms, specifically people who are concerned with performing at a higher standard than the average player: you need it to have an advantage, or at least to level the playing field against another team that knows how to communicate and react appropriately to relayed information.
There are also a shit ton of communities that still exist in these games, MMO's or team based multiplayer, that don't require you to use a microphone for anything. Personally, I feel like someone who doesn't like voice chat hasn't found the right group of people to play with, because I enjoy talking with the friends I've made and known on the internet for years, and I enjoy even more having the tools necessary to compete. It's not only made us a closer group of comrades, but it's made us better teammates.
"This is life! We suffer and slave and expire. That's it!" -Bernard Black (Dylan Moran)
Personally, the only time I really feel a guild should enforce such a rule is in groups and raids, otherwise I would MUCH rather type and chat that have to use my mic. As others have said though, if a guilds leader wants to create such a rule and enforce it, that is their prerogative, it's their guild and they may do as they wish. I have just learned to ask if there are such rules in advance, and if there are, I won't join.
It's kind of weird tbh, I find the use of mics to be a blessing for raiding and harder dungeons etc., and I don't mind others being on mics outside of said events, but personally I don't really want to talk through a mic outside of them. If I want to join a conversation, or have something to contribute I usually type it in chat, if it's not seen or w/e, oh well.
It's the same with the phone....for example, my wife sometimes calls me when she's at lunch, it's usually b/c she forgot to tell me something important like I need to pick the kids up or w/e, but sometimes she tries to tell me about what's going on in her shop, or some small little anectode about an interaction she had with a customer, or co-worker....and I shut down, I love her to death, but I don't care about that silly shit! And that's my wife, the mother of my children, the person closest to me in the whole word, and if I don't really want to talk to her on the phone, I sure as hell don't want to talk to anyone else! Whenever possible, if someone wants to talk to me on the phone I prefer to chat via text's, and it's the same in a game, maybe even more so. I guess that is pretty anti-social, and I'm ok with that.
I've been in a lot of guilds and I've even (tried to) run a few guilds myself. The ones that required you to be on voice chat have always been the best ones. Even to the point where I wouldn't want to join a guild without it anymore.
There is just no way you can communicate or socialize as easily if you have to type everything, it's impossible. Believe me, as someone who led both PvP and PvE raids, I know.
If you are doing a quest with voice-acting or just want to be left in peace for a while you can just mute yourself and leave a message on the chat, or even just log off for a bit.
Most guilds with that requirement aren't going to be a total bitch about it and will understand when you wonna take some time off chat. Or if you have trouble installing the software or aqcuiring a mic.
When trying to build a new guild or division the priority has ALWAYS been to get members on chat, only then can you try to get fun events and such running. Especially because nowadays the "I do not respond to chat or whispers" - syndrome is simply rampant.
Everytime people didn't show up on chat any longer, you knew you had to act or risk everything going to hell.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
I am sure this has probably been said before, I just don't have the time to read pages of replies... But I have a team speak, if you log in we can talk about it, lmfao. I totally understand where you are coming from, video games are my escape from the real world, or my choice in entertainment to do so. But for large events, communication does help organize for a competitive edge.
What I recommend for you is if you, if you find a guild with similar goals and are truly interested in joining, and they appear to having interest in you joining just be honest. Ask them for a quiet room, a channel for you and like minded guildies in the voice chat client. I would often just find an empty room when I felt like just getting away, and would easily do this for guild mates if they asked when I ran a chat client.

I must be anti social or something lol. I keep reading these guild pages where they require you to be logged into their microphone chat every time you play. I got kicked out of a guild for not doing that once to. I mean seriously, just look at the posts here 90% of them are some one complaining, look at this post its me complaining. Its tolerable to read it in my head in a monotone voice, but to be forced to hear 15 people bitch about something every time i play a game.................
I guess thats what people like though, I will have a hard time playing mmos i guess. I remember the days of UO, and everquest we seemed to manage doing pvp, and hard mob fights with out listening to each other bitch about how our days are going on vent.
I can understand in a game, where voice communication is helpful to make every one work as a team easier. Seriously though every time i play....... I tried it with imperial dreams over at mortal online, which they were one reason i quit the game. Every time i would log into there chat, while i played. It would be 3 of them ethier complaining about something in their lives, or something in the game. So i didnt join it any more, and told them when you want to do something important with me, let me know ill log on.
Here is one from dark fall.
The Originals is a new clan with experienced players seeking members. We are looking for vets and Newer players, we are willing to help you PvE for Prowess and Train you for PvP. We have access to nice cities and nice little alliance. We want to stay relatively small and focus on teamwork instead of numbers.
We Require you have a mic, log in mumble when online, be mature in coms, at least 45k prowess or close so we know you are dedicated to the game.
Thanks and have a great day!
As i said i must be anti social, i really dont want to hear any of you talk about how you think dark fall sucks, or how your day was, or what you think about the world state of affairs. If you want to type it to me, and i can read it when i feel like it sure. To be forced to put up with some one shit talk every time i want to play a game, makes me want to puke lol.
Maybe its because i have kids, and i have to listen to their nonsense every day for hours on end, that i dont want to listen to other peoples i dono. But seriously, i hope i can find a guild in dark fall, that wont require me to sit and listen to them bull shit for 12 hours a day, so i can be apart of a team. All for in a battle, but i really anit playing online games to make friends to hang out with out side of the game it self.
If i wanted to hear people complain about their lives, and bull shit i would go to a bar, where atleast there is pretty women, and beer lol.
frankly i never seen the use of chat in an mmorpg,if it is a raid, or some guild even only a few people need to talk anyways.they sure as hell do not need 50 people talking at same time.so what is the point of having all with a mic.just as long as you can hear what they say.
And I don't mind talking with perfect strangers in voice chat. Why would anyone have issue with that?
maybe theres people who haev jobs who have to listen to people whine and complain all day.
maybe theres people with kids and families and pets making noise all day.
the last thing you want when you sit down and relax is some idiot reporting his play by play nonstop over your computer speakers.
If you're going in with that attitude that says enough about you honestly.
There are plenty of mature guilds out there who are anything but "idiots who whine and complain all day". But simply a bunch of chill friends who are fine talking with eachother and leaving you alone if you just want to level or quest in peace.
But as someone said before: it's your call. There are plenty of guilds out there who don't have any requirement whatsoever. With the dawn of things like group finder and multi-guilds, I'm sure you can even find plenty of guilds where you don't even have to say a word in chat and can just enjoy the 10% XP bonus or somesuch.
Their guild, their rules.

are you that important you have to force people to sit in vent listening to your play by play on whatever questline you are on, or you bad luck with drops or whatever...
i know voice chat helps otherwise incompetant people. there is nothing a very good player needs on voice chat, nothing. 'heal me' no crap i have eyes and im a healer. 'enemy inc' no crap, i don't suck and again have eyes and can camera pan.. 'get out of the red in 3---2---1--' yeah
granted there are far less % of decent players now who need handheld and directed, so im not saying there isn't a place for voice chat for people like i mentioned. attention seekers, those without ties in real life, and those that just aren't very good and need it. and i realize there are guilds out there without it as well. i actually started a guild that was advertised as 'no vent' in rift and it was the most progressed guild on the server at the time i quit.

No I'm not.
But if you actually read the posts by me or other people in this thread who support voice chat, you'd perhaps realise that we'd never force anyone to "sit in vent listening to your play by play on whatever questline you are on, or you bad luck with drops or whatever".
Making general statements labeling guilds who prefer having people on voice chat as whiners, idiots and players who need to hold hands and be directed is just a short-sighted attitude.

So by your logic everyone that uses voice com in their day to day life/at their job is just an incompetent loser who should be working in total silence?
I've seen and heard these same types adverting their guilds. If I wanted another job I wouldn't be playing a "game", these wanna-be alpha-lords are sad and ridiculous. Turning a "game" into some high-stress gotta-"WIN"!!! - or commit Seppuku! It's supposed to be FUN people! Get it?
I hate chat boxes in game. HATE it ! I only join guilds that req voice coms. Key thing is to find a guild with a age req. at least 18+. Second is make sure they have a no drama rule. Best bet is to join one of the multi gaming guilds that have been together 5 + years, 10 is even better. They have is down to a science now.
If you're joining fly by night guilds, then expect tons of attitudes, trolls and other unwanted types.
If you see Guild "OMGL33Ts" is now looking for people, safe to say it's junk and will just die off soon.
If you're under 21 or 18, then sorry I have no idea. Good luck .
Yeah, it's called MMORPG for a reason. TO PLAY WITH OTHERS.
Games need to rid the 100% solo play for good. Need to get back to building a stable community, can't do that if the whole dam game is solo.
Originally posted by Tyr216 I have no qualms whatsoever with using voice chat when I'm participating in a guild activity and I'm social during it but to just be logged in for the sake of being logged in when nothing is going on? Fuck that. Complain about your lives and share your shitty political opinions in gchat so I can ignore your posts and go about playing the game and relaxing while listening to music. MMO's are about social interaction but they're also about solo play whether you like it or not. People don't always want to listen to other people talk. We need downtime where we're going off and doing our own thing by ourselves, especially after a long day at work.
You can do that on voice too. You can mute the voice chat and continue to listen to your music. I do that all the time. The moment everyone starts rambling i just mute.
If you mute all those people yammering about on Vent/TS so you can hear your own game sounds/quest dialog/music/Netflix - then what exactly was the purpose of logging on Vent/TS in the first place?
If it's to be available for someone to put out a quick call for help using Vent/TS - that is sort of difficult since you just muted everyone else. At that point, wouldn't it be just as well use the typed guild chat channel to call for help?
I own a Vent server for my guild and have for years. My brother and I use it almost all the time but we don't expect others to log on it. Honestly, I don't want everyone on it all the time. I had a friend log on it last night who wanted to be chatty and pretty much kept me from watching Netflix on the other monitor.
I've raided with and without voice chat - both are doable, though since the popularity of voice chat in recent years - many raids have been designed to expect raids to use voice chat these days. For the most part though, it's not really that required. PvP is an entirely different matter though - especially ranked matches. Voice chat is a really good tool for that.
I am fine with mics while doing group content like raiding. Anything outside of that I want no part of. The people on Vent/Mumble that talk the most are usually the ones I want to hear the least. I rather be immersed with actual game sound and music, or if I am doing something monotonous I will turn on something like Pandora. I simply make sure I don't join guilds that require it.
I'm the type of person that gets embarassed for people on tv when they act like a fool. You can imagine the mine field things like Ventrilo are for me. I play MMOs to unwind and relax. I find listening to vent stressful so I avoid it as much as possible. Besides, while listening to most of what is said in vent, I am in very real danger of my eyes becoming stuck from rolling them too much.
To each their own. Just make sure you do your research before joining a guild.
I'm somewhat the same. I feel so bad for some TV show characters sometime.
I've also felt really bad for some fellow guildies as their antics played about in voice chat. It was really bad in one particular guild I was in where the guildleader's wife really carried on with her flirting with the guild's main tank (who was not her husband).
Originally posted by Rydeson You think that is bad.. wait for when they demand your account information and password so they can use your character just in case you are NOT online when they need it.. LOL
Did that back in EQ1. Guild I was in required us to have "online buddies" to drag our characters in to get attunement flags if we couldn't be online to get them ourselves.

dont worrie, you are not alone. i hate going on voice coms with ppl i dont have a big conection with.
i go in WoW when raiding and i just say hello and good bye unless is somthing ofc urgent in game that i have to talk about.
rest i keep in touch with some guild mates but we know each other for 6 years already we just do the casual voice call in skype.
but as you said , if to join a guild of ppl i dont know i have to join their voips i say , NO.

I don't do text chat anymore. Its way too inefficient. The gaming communities I'm involved with, all use voice chat all the time. Even outside games.
Voice chat is so much more efficient and expressive and you can still share links and quotes in the chat window attached to the Voip program.
And I don't mind talking with perfect strangers in voice chat. Why would anyone have issue with that?

i actually started a guild that was advertised as 'no vent' in rift and it was the most progressed guild on the server at the time i quit.
yes ,i worked for xbox customer support, think i want to play a game and hear people whine.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
Their guild, their rules.
and if your going in with that attitude it says enough about you.
are you that important you have to force people to sit in vent listening to your play by play on whatever questline you are on, or you bad luck with drops or whatever...
i know voice chat helps otherwise incompetant people. there is nothing a very good player needs on voice chat, nothing. 'heal me' no crap i have eyes and im a healer.
'enemy inc' no crap, i don't suck and again have eyes and can camera pan..
'get out of the red in 3---2---1--' yeah

Sounds like butthurt to me. Grow up man.
Did that back in EQ1. Guild I was in required us to have "online buddies" to drag our characters in to get attunement flags if we couldn't be online to get them ourselves.
Not something that I will ever do again.
