I don't do text chat anymore. Its way too inefficient. The gaming communities I'm involved with, all use voice chat all the time. Even outside games.
Voice chat is so much more efficient and expressive and you can still share links and quotes in the chat window attached to the Voip program.
And I don't mind talking with perfect strangers in voice chat. Why would anyone have issue with that?
Different strokes for different folks. I don't care who hears my voice.
I don't like strangers getting on my vent server though. I pay for it, they don't. After an acquaintance of mine thought he could just use it to run PUG raids and filled it to capacity, it got locked and requires user accounts to log on to.
Most times, I'd still rather just type though. Once you have more than 3 or 4 "chatty" people in voice chat, it's very easy for them to start talking over each other.
They want you on comms at all times because you are expected at any moment to stop what you're doing, to help the guild leader or his 3 friends (officers) to get loot for them and them only. Most likely those few people are the only ones ever talking.
Before someone replies with denial or excuses, please include your guild rank status.
My guild usually use microphones for dungeons and whenever people feel chatty but it isn't really a requirement. Then again, everyone in my guild do know at least another member IRL (besides our 2 brits) so that might make us chattier.
But every guild should decide their own rules based on what works best for them, few people fit in every guild anyways and it should be both in interest of the player and the guild to play with like-minded. I don't think playing in a guild where all other members use teamspeak and you don't would be particularly fun.
Finding the right guild is one of the most important things if you want to enjoy yourself in a MMO if you aren't a lone wolf.
In large scale raids (20+) I actively stay away from "VOIP-only" guilds.
Sure, for most people talking is faster than typing. But chat logs have a couple of key advantages:
*) More than one person can type at a time, only 1 person can talk at a time and be understood *) More than one person talking at a time completely disrupts all comms. *) In most games, multiple text chat streams can be sent to different chat windows, allowing you to organize and prioritize simultaneous communication. *) Once you say something, it's heard and gone. If you didn't hear it or don't remember it, your screwed. If it's typed, you can scroll back if needed, but re-read it as many times as you need. *) I can tie in chat commands to in-game macros. I can't do that with VOIP. *) Chat logs keep a definitive record of what was said, you aren't relying on anyone's memory of the event (although VOIP can be recorded, it often isn't). *) My dogs don't think I'm trying to talk to them and come running for attention *) My kid doesn't hear a constant stream of teen-angst-fueled gutter talk, or I don't have to wear headphones
Any more, I generally find it much faster to type than to talk, because i don't have to wait for Chatty Joe to finish his story about "Man I'm so high right now" or Chatty Jane talk about her bad day with kids eating the paste in daycare again.
"Their guild, their law, their rules. Don't like it? Find another guild.".
For instance, my guild only accepts 18+ years old people unless they are family of one of the existing adult guild members who will vouch for them. The reasons for that are multiple and are our own too. Don't like it? No problem, find another guild.
Now that this is out of the way:
- I do NOT agree with forced usage of headset/microphone each time you're online. That's just plain silly in my opinion.
- I DO agree with requiring players to have a headset/microphone when the guild does group content together.
Seems to me you just encountered a bunch of extremists which you will be better served to avoid anyway.

This.
We got along quite fine in Ultima Online and older MMOs without voice. Hell UO hardly had a decent group chat and no friends list...most of us used ICQ to get a hold of each other.
My son uses voice chat constantly, I find it rather annoying. They hardly talk about the game. Maybe just a few minutes here n there while in the game. But otherwize it is just random chat. I can't stand listening to him...why would i want to listen to a bunch of complete strangers doing the same thing?
I mostly get on voice chat when I'm doing content that requires a decent level of coordination that typing is too slow to convey. I'm not the most social person in the world and I don't always like hearing other people talking when I want to play, especially if I'm trying to read quest text or watch a cutscene or something.
With that said, I would not go out of my way to join a guild that has voice chat requirements whenever you're logged in. I'm ok with voice chat required while raiding as it makes things easier.

maybe theres people who haev jobs who have to listen to people whine and complain all day. maybe theres people with kids and families and pets making noise all day. the last thing you want when you sit down and relax is some idiot reporting his play by play nonstop over your computer speakers.
If you're going in with that attitude that says enough about you honestly.
There are plenty of mature guilds out there who are anything but "idiots who whine and complain all day". But simply a bunch of chill friends who are fine talking with eachother and leaving you alone if you just want to level or quest in peace.
But as someone said before: it's your call. There are plenty of guilds out there who don't have any requirement whatsoever. With the dawn of things like group finder and multi-guilds, I'm sure you can even find plenty of guilds where you don't even have to say a word in chat and can just enjoy the 10% XP bonus or somesuch.
Their guild, their rules.
and if your going in with that attitude it says enough about you.
are you that important you have to force people to sit in vent listening to your play by play on whatever questline you are on, or you bad luck with drops or whatever...
i know voice chat helps otherwise incompetant people. there is nothing a very good player needs on voice chat, nothing. 'heal me' no crap i have eyes and im a healer. 'enemy inc' no crap, i don't suck and again have eyes and can camera pan.. 'get out of the red in 3---2---1--' yeah
granted there are far less % of decent players now who need handheld and directed, so im not saying there isn't a place for voice chat for people like i mentioned. attention seekers, those without ties in real life, and those that just aren't very good and need it. and i realize there are guilds out there without it as well. i actually started a guild that was advertised as 'no vent' in rift and it was the most progressed guild on the server at the time i quit.
So by your logic everyone that uses voice com in their day to day life/at their job is just an incompetent loser who should be working in total silence?
Sounds like butthurt to me. Grow up man.
The best communications tool in an MMO is the UI. If you pay attention to the UI, the action communicates the reality to you better than any voice or chat can.

Sounds like someone has never raided a day in their life.
When I played ffxi, voice chat never even crossed my mine back in 2003-2005. In that game people would just set up macros were they just press a certain key like cnt+9 and it would just pop into the chat box with a sound.
I seriously never came across a time back then when I ever even thought about VOIP. Fully enjoyed that game to. Just didn't really touch endgame though, so maybe that's how I avoided it.
These days with mmo's seems like if you don't do caped group content you don't have much to do. Guss that's why voice is more required these days.

FFXI, raid mechanics was BY FAR way more simpler. People call WoW easy-mode now, let a game dev release FFXI raids in todays mmo world, they would storm their offices and execute them for releasing such an abomination. But anyway, my point is even in FFXI raids, voip wasn't necessary.
So you're right, in today's mmo's that actually have real raids, voip is pretty much a requirement to do them effectively. There's plenty of mechanics where simply paying attention to the UI isn't enough, you need split second knowledge on who needs to move out, or if two people need to converge together, or any number of things that a simple glance at the debuff bar won't tell you.
It boggles the mind why Anti Social people play MMOs. The guy who posted this needs to go find a nice quiet corner somewhere and play with himself.. err by himself.
I don't mind voice chat for raids, dungeons, meetings, events. I've spent many enjoyable play sessions chatting with guild mates. I prefer chatting in smaller groups though. I would never join a guild that made it a requirement to always be logged in. Then again, I always avoid guilds that have stringent requirements like hours played, attendance, lengthy interviews. With regards to voice chat, I just can't do it all the time. In an atmosphere intensive game like TSW, the last thing I want to hear is someone nattering away when I'm in the midst of listening to some of their epic cut scenes. Same thing with other dialogue intensive games where I'm trying to hear the story. I find that it saps the enjoyment and immersion out of the game for me. If I'm in a dungeon run or grinding mobs, no problems. Makes the run more enjoyable, especially if you are with a nice group of people.
I do think that in many guilds though, voice chat is pretty much the norm. I've belonged to guilds where people stay logged in 24/7, even if they aren't playing the game. I've also found that it is usually the same group of folks that pretty much dominate the chat channels and as mentioned before in this thread, this can turn into cliques. One guild I belonged to had a clique of regular chatters that were pretty tough on new comers into the channel. There is usually that one guy or gal who is the queen bee or king of the channel. Makes it uninviting. Folks that don't hang out in chat can often feel alienated from the guild.
I joined up with a really nice guild in ArcheAge. I think that I'm going to work hard to use voice chat a bit more and get more involved. With a hectic family, kids, dog sometimes that will be hard but I will try. Fortunately my new guild is pretty relaxed about these things....if you want to jump into Mumble, fine. If not, that is fine too.
This post is nothing more than I want to join your guild and get the perks but I don't want to contribute.
F2P freeloading at its best.
How so? Not sure about your F2P freeloading comment. I've met many folks through the years that have avoided voice chat except for raid or group events. Many of them have been pleasant, helpful people who are valued members of the guild and contribute in their own way.
Many years ago in LOTRO, we had a really great guild tank who always was there to lead people through the dungeons. He would give you the shirt off his back and was one of the most respected players in the guild. He functioned just fine typing. If someone chooses not to hang out in voice chat every play session, this does not make them a freeloader. Of course my comments are geared at MMOs in general....not a game like Darkfall which I know nothing about. If voice chat is an essential element to guild success, then yeah, folks need to get with the program.
I think the bottom line is to find a guild you are happy with. I avoid the ones that have policies I don't agree with. No angst on my part either. There are plenty out there who may not be at world firsts but can function just fine.
" I only use voice coms if I need something from someone"
That's not accurate, or fair. I contribute to guilds I am in all the time. I enjoy helping others. Whether that's through crafting, running dungeons, or simply answering questions. How is it selfish to not want to listen to the same group of players go on and on in Vent when not running dungeons or group content?
In EVE I used voice chat when we went out to PVP and we ended up using text most the time ax it made it easier for everyone to remember what had been asked etc.
Then you also have language barriers, those who decide to hold a conversation in god knows what tongue. In text much easier to ignore, muting people in voice who do that can lead yo problems when they speak decide to english and want help.
UO no-one had a problem organising a mob to go hunt down the local gang who preyed on passers by, in game I just use text, no one needs to hear me having a seizure and then swearing as the pain from hitting your head, arms legs sinks in afterwards especially if I threw the mouse off the desk again or bashed the keyboard (not looking forward to another outlay for razor gear)
I have no problem when people swear ingame, it's just that I know if i had a choice I'd not listen to hmm seizures either, the neighbours probably feel the same lol
We got along quite fine in Ultima Online and older MMOs without voice.
People were fine without automobiles for centuries, medicine for hundred of years, and so on ...
Do you want to go back to stone age? I don't.
While your point is completely valid on its own, that's not even the biggest issue with his line of thinking.
Going back over a decade to games like UO and other MMOs of its time, boss mechanics didn't require coordination. You just simply needed the bodies to do it. That's it. You literally only needed a handful of actually decent players to kill the big bad bosses in those games, and just a bunch of nobodies as meat shields essentially.
It's why i laugh everytime i see that type of comment show up in this thread.
If you are not in a guild that uses teamspeak / Ventrilo / Mumble you are just in a no name fail guild that doesnt do much for its members. And its certainly realy bad.......

Allmost as useless as "we only recruit 18+"
Llike they need a copy of your driver license or somthing ?
Or does the site that the guld has have one of there age verifyers ? :P
Since then you will be SURE he is above 18 :P
(kinda silly since u wanna avoind imature behavoir and that goes from 1 to 80 its not realy bound to age)
I can understand the need for some kinda TS thingy while doing raids or grouped events that need coordination
since you cant actualy respond fast and type at the same time.
But i aint gonna go TS while i am questing since its annoying are irrelevant to me anyways.
If you are not in a guild that uses teamspeak / Ventrilo / Mumble you are just in a no name fail guild that doesnt do much for its members.
