You do understand that Sid Meier hasn't been doing much heavy hitting since about Civ3?  They bring him in for advice, and a pass on the game design, but pretty much everything else is done by other folks and other teams.   They stick his name on it for marketing purposes, based on his historical prominence.   And IP ownership.

And really, if SC kept Roberts as just a marketing figurehead, they'd be doing a lot better.    'Cause Roberts is no Sid Meier.  Never was....

It was his named attached to the project that brought the initial backer rush in.

I've known of CR since the early 90's. I'm not sure how young you are, but there are obviously a lot of other people who played those games as well. SC isn't using CR to make him known, it's his game. The game is known because of him.

Absolutely.   Unfortunately, the crowd knows who Chris Roberts says he is.  For many, that's a name on a box.

His credits and competence are vastly overblown.    I suspect that this is the case for a lot more 'big names' too.

I don't doubt that he wants SC to be 'the best game evah!'.   Just that, outside of marketing, he's doing much to help it along.  The SC fans had better buy more ships, cross their fingers,  and wish luck to the development teams.

Ok how can you call me wrong bro when the dude is known for 1 game?  He made 1 successful game that's it and back in 1990.  Yea everyone knows the 1 dude who made that 1 game back in 1990.  Or NOT.  Ok here's a few fun facts.

On October 10, 2012, Cloud Imperium Games launched a crowdfunding campaign from the Roberts Space Industries website with the stated goal of raising between TWO AND FOUR million dollars to produce a space sim game for the personal computer in a sandbox vein.       Chris Roberts had stated that if at least $23 million could be raised over the course of the crowdfunding campaign, no outside investors' or developers' funding would be required. This goal was reached October 18, 2013.[12] As of October 2015, they have raised over $91 million.

Yea if you can't see how wrong that is then you are willfully blind.

I'm not sure what you're trying to convey. Are you pointing out the market viability of the product or something? I know how the CF campaign went. You are obviously misinformed if you think his resume rides on one game. He's been involved with an ass load of titles, many of which were rather fun, and innovative for their time.

He's been involved with a total of 7 games and 4 of them were directed by him meanwhile only 1 of them was successful while the other 2 were only successful because they were sequels to the first.  Yea I don't think you have done any reading about the person which you have placed on such a pedestal.

@Realizer So you are defending a point and making a claim that doesn't even exist.  You did say ass load of games.  I did say he is using this game to make a name for himself.  You claimed an ass load of games is what gave him the name and they are using his name to promote SC.  So naturally I looked up this ass load of games and only found 1 title.  Which makes me wonder why you said he was involved with so many games to make my point invalid.  Like I said it is SC that is promoting Chris Roberts not the other way around.  Without SC no one would even know Chris Robert's name.  The only reason they know his name is because he named his company after himself.

Fairly easy to see they have missed release dates, pushed back the goalposts and you can check the internet archive for when they edited their TOS. I'd say that is a fairly large smoking gun but feel free to keep playing spin doctor.
Let me remind you that any backer has agreed to the following (in ALL versions of the TOS)

".....However, you acknowledge and agree that delivery as of such date is not a firm promise and may be extended by RSI since unforeseen events may extend the development and/or production time. ...."

So - if you are a backer - you AGREED to the possibility of delays.

I personally am fine with that. I rather have a good, completed game rather than a half assed incomplete desaster like Batman.

If YOU have a problem with what you agreed to .... GET A REFUND and go play something else.

    Have fun

two week limit when the game isn't delivered?  I think not.  They listed many specifics when asking for funding.

    • That same year, Computer Gaming World ranked him as eighth on the list of the "Most Influential Industry Players of All Time", noting that no game designer has had as many CGW Hall of Fame games as Sid Meier.[15]
    • In 1997, Computer Gaming World ranked him as number one on the list of the "Most Influential People of All Time in Computer Gaming", for game design.[16]
    • In 1999, he became the second person to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame.[17]
    • In 2008, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2008 Game Developer's Conference.[18]
    • In 2009, he came fifth in a Develop survey that asked some 9,000 game makers about their "ultimate development hero".[1]
    • In 2009, he was ranked second in IGN's list of "Top Game Creators of All Time", and was called "the ideal role model for any aspiring game designer."[19]

You also realize that Sid Meier's didn't put his name on games until after he was ridiculously famous.  They were using his name as an advertising tool not a way to make him famous.  Unlike SC which is using Cris Roberts name just for the purpose of making him known.
Known for what, has yet to be revealed.

Not to mention that every Wing Commander was also a technical milestone in its own right. From animated cutscenes to real video action in space sims, from voice acting to famous actors in a game, from for its time ground breaking ship and flying quality to many branching conversations and storylines with different outcomes. etc. etc.

Numerous 5 stars and computer Hall of Fame awards. Individually!

Privateer, Starlancer, Strike Commander ...also critically acclaimed.

And for me personally Freelancer IS a Chris Roberts game through and through, no matter what Microsoft wrote on the box.

To give a quote from EVE Online  : "I was there!"  Sorry, insider joke. Google it, watch the video.

Read the wiki people.  The only successful game he made was Wing Commander 1.  The other games his name is attached to are because he was involved a little in their making but he wasn't the actual game designer.  Those 9 games on that list only 3 of them are his titles.  The wing commander series wasn't even his after the first game.  Look I'm not saying he is a bad developer or a bad person.  Just saying his name isn't helping SC because he is unknown to the gaming world.  Just like my name wouldn't help a Baseball game even though I played Baseball for 9 years.
Are you onto something or just on something?

No matter what you say they will look at CR as a God even though it was really the people behind him that keep reeling him in to stay on track and make the game(s) are the real God's. He is an idea man with no control on how to stop and create it.

Maybe it is inconceivable for you:

The majority of fans of the Wing Commander / Starlancer / Freelancer etc. games - think that the WHOLE team(s) that created these games are giants of the software industry. They created milestones of their genre(s) and of the whole computer gaming industry (as can be seen from Hall of Fame awards).

Yes, Chris Roberts is the figurehead. No, he is not the only one that gets the fame and glory in the eyes of the fans (and journalists).

That is only in your twisted view of things.

My Twisted view of things?   https://robertsspaceindustries.com/  Is this not the homepage of Star Citizen?  I don't think I twisted anything here the dude has planted his name and face all over this game.
