Some planets should be available in the delayed patch known as 3.0
The intention is for the patch to arrive sometime this year (hopefully).

Sounds good to me.  Im in no hurry and would prefer quality than something rushed.  I do still log in occasionally and fly around with my MR something or other just to see how its going.  The amount of time it would take to code a whole planets surface with terrain and mobs seems almost inconceivable but good luck to them!

If you have not already done so, you might want to check out various videos about planetary landing and planet procedural generation in Star Citizen:

Erillion, i have watched it before and it looks amazing.  Its just when you figure the scope of a whole planet and not just a tiny area for a demo...  I mean i could be landing on the north pole and a guy cold be landing on the south and any number in between, all the mobs, the trees, rocks, cities etc.  It just gets hard to imaging doing all that work.  That said, they did it in this demo so why not on a larger scale.  I 100% hope for the best!

"Any" planets surface .... that will take some time (as in .. years).

Star Citizen planets are not procedurally generated like those in NMS or E:D ... PG is only used in designing the planets in a first iteration, but then a developer reworks the basic PG generated planet. That is why you do not have 100 billion planets in Star Citizen.

Selected planets   (e.g. the planets in the Stanton system that will be the first fully fleshed out system) ... i would personally expect that sometime in 2017.

There is no official announcement w.r.t. to that ... so we can only speculate.

Ohh so will we be allowed to go to these planets before the final human touched to them?  Once planet landing is implemented of course..

I think the first (promised) 100 systems will have planets that a developer has reworked.

Once the procedural generation has advanced, i could imagine that they up the pace of  PG planet generation, allowing exploration to speed up. However, personally I believe they will NOT go the same route as NMS and E:D .... no 100 % PG ever. There will always be hand designed POI  and the area in between (from pole to pole, excluding the points of interest) will be PG - with spawning special sites that later despawn.

    @Scubie67

What exactly are you scared of ?

Do you think they have technical problems that are unsolvable ?

Do you think that they are concentrating too much on details ? If yes, which ones ?

Given the scope of the game since Feb 2013  (where most of the major extra extension goals where already known) - how long did you expect the game development to take ? In Feb 2013 it was already clear that SC will be more than just a new version of Wing Commander and that it had a much larger scope than the first version described at the start of the October 2012 Kickstarter campaign. At the end of 2012 I personally expected a minimum of 5 years development time and first results by the end of 2017.

Do you think they are NOT working on the game and SC is all a huge scam and money laundering op ?

Do you think they are working very much different compared to other teams ?

One day it'll get released in one form or another. Here's a couple of quotes that indicate where the project currently stands.

    - We're starting to put together a gameplay team
    - We're researching ways to implement the hundreds of animations we've developed over the years

Going to be a while yet....

And he still wants people to believe he won't be playing the game, remember at the very start he cliamed he wouldn't be playing the game.

This was to justify his God worship of Mystical Chris and the game. Thing is he has forgotten what he cliamed a couple of years ago lol.

Guess he is having the most fun in Chris Roberts herem. He gets extra special treatment for his on going devotion.

I just can't get that scene out of my head from pulp fiction when they bring the gimp out of the box.

More and more information coming out about the fifth CIG studio - Foundry 42 Derby in UK. The developers working there are giving the fans more information on what they are working on. AND some hints about a chance to see your face in the game.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/5odelb/foundry_42_derby_office/

"Hi all, Yep, I'm the Lead Facial Animator at the "secret studio". It's not a secret really, we're just really busy so we're always beavering away in the background. :)

We're looking after all the Facial Animation for the games, taking delivery from an outsource vender and also our in house pipeline that we've developed.

We've got a small Mo-cap team working here and also we'll be looking after some body animation.

There's 9 of us currently and we're looking for more as I'm sure you can all imagine the shear volume of Facial/Body/Mo-cap data is HUGE!

Exciting things happening all the time. :)"

"Hi, I was running the Face Scanner for the Cast and am interested in setting up more scanning sessions for backers/Fans.

It's a bit of a logistical nightmare as if we did it in the UK only, then people form other countries would get the hump.

    We'll figure something out... :)"

    Monthly Studio Report February 2017

Text ;-) and lots of videos.

Highlight for me is the report from the Austin studio - yeah, that is the studio that is supposedly "dead" for the last 1.5 years if you believe certain people.

So.... didn't they just spend the last 2 years doing mo cap? Bit late to hire some facial animators now, unless the mo cap all turned out to be junk.
  • ErillionErillion Member EpicPosts: 10,329
You may check it again and understand that most of these devs are not recent hirings. Also from the "Admiral Bishop" video (and it's "Behind the Scenes") we know that CIG has facial animators for years now.

The importance of facial animations can be seen in the uproar around the new Mass Effect Andromeda.

IMHO a great game. Some fans and even some of the press are ripping the developers a new one for problems with the animation, especially facial animation. Makes em drop the game from an average 80/100 to a 65/100 in some cases. And - sure enough - one hears the expected comments of "they should have used more time to get it right" .... which are usually the same commenters that previously screamed "I want it NOW!".

    Examples:
    http://kotaku.com/people-are-ripping-apart-mass-effect-andromedas-animati-1793334047

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidthier/2017/03/17/mass-effect-andromedas-facial-animations-are-flat-out-terrible/#671b18d23425

(and no - they are IMHO not "flat out terrible" .. its the usual clickbait)

In my opinion CIG should take the time to get it right.

Here is an interesting article discussing (facial) animations. I guess the same things that the Mass Effect Andromeda devs had to take into account are the time consuming obstacles that the Star Citizen devs have to overcome.

I wonder if this was worked out by the attorney's that each site would take down the offending content or something else was up?

Most likely a mutual agreement (and done silently) between the company that owns The Escapist (Defy Media I think?) and CIG.

What is interesting because one would think both sides had dropped the ball on the whole story back then. Unexpected that almost 2 years later the articles got taken down.
