OK disregard EVERYTHING EVERY critic has said. Then look at what SC is, what it was supposed to be and what it is (supposedly) going to be.
Look at what they have said or shown, and what they have not said or not show.
Take all of Roberts claims as gospel. What is the release date? What will be released? When will other parts be released?
And dont say "when its finished" thats participation trophy generation bullshit.
Then if you want to see how ambitious or 'awesome' it is start comparing it to what we see and what is already in existence, and then figure out if they have enough money (according to their figures) to make what you see from them right now with your own eyes as good or better than what you can also see (from other companies) with your own eyes.
There is plenty out there for people to make their own conclusions you dont even need speculation. beyond your own hopes that what you believe will come true. Until they also show 'proof' that it exists (they havent even shown they can do half the stuff they claim) then NO ONE, fans or critics really know shit.
Because while the fans demand proof and links they ironically disregard the lack of such things from their heroes when their heroes make (unjustified and unsubstantiated) claims themselves. Thats why this rojest is such a firebrand because no one knows anything and one group believes everything they hear while others dont believe half of it and go by what they can see to make their judgments.
I would hope that if by 2018 NOTHING has been released to the public the few stalwarts who believe everything will eventually wake up, and if by some miracle they do release a game that is as good as stuff already available before then we will be able to come to a realization that SC will be just another game (with a much bigger price tag) that was available to play for years already.

Something has already been released. I consider SC 2.1+ to be quite significant - and it was the first time I actually felt convinced the project was possible in terms of technology.
Maybe it's because I understand something about what it takes to achieve anything close to the scope Roberts is going for that I don't fret just yet.
But, I WILL say, that if by 2018 - we're still at 2.x alpha - THEN I'll be worried
However, I can wait for a very long time if only I'll get true evolution in gaming. That's something I've been waiting for since the mid-90s, truth be told.
And dont say "when its finished" thats participation trophy generation bullshit.
You may not like the answer , but my answer is :
"It's done when it's done" ....
IMHO they should NOT launch it any sooner than when the product matches the vision.
I personally can and will wait until then. And I have put my money where my mouth is and backed.
Have fun
I would have figured as a paid employee of CIG/RSI you would get the game for free.
But in all honesty if you are willing to wait until CR's "vision" of SC matches what is in his head then you will be waiting a long time. I just want a great space sim or at least a Wing Commander/Freelancer successor.
Bartoni's Law definition: As an Internet discussion grows volatile, the probability of a comparison involving Donald Trump approaches 1.
--> What I say in this thread : It is ridiculous to believe that even a few BILLION UEC generated from converting real life money into UEC will influence the in game economy in any measurable way. Because even SINGLE PLAYERS will soon own several BILLION UEC individually after they figured out how the in game economy works. And i provided examples that EXACTLY THAT has happened in other space games before.
Well, thanks for getting back to the topic, but I very much believe you are wrong. If players are exchanging UEC in game for, I dunno, stuff, space weed, then the going rate will be reflected by the amount of currency someone else has and is willing to pay for it. This is how economy works.
Now, say MrGuy is a new player, he wants to float around, kickin it with the space traders, he's a new dude, only spent 50 bucks on the game, you know what he can hope to get accomplished in player trades? Jack squat, that's what, unless he kicks in 50 more bucks for UEC space cash, he's not going to have a hope or dream of seeing even the bottom edge of the marketboard. This isn't going to be 4 or 5 years down the line, this is at release.
If you don't see this, from your own experience in online gaming, if you don't understand this from a base understanding of markets, then yeh, I can understand you think I'm totally wrong, even making up stuff. All it takes is one commodity, just one, and you'll see how batshit prices become, because people who already have "it" will have acquired it with far more than a person can "earn" in a few days. That is a wrecked economy. That absolutely forces people who want to participate to buy more in-game money, because the in-game currency has lost such significant value, the only way to compete is to artificially mint more cash, i.e. buy more in-game money with cash. That is broken. The only people who want to play like that are the people "at the top", and soon there will be so few people "at the bottom" that those top people get bored and wander away, too.
Something has already been released. I consider SC 2.1+ to be quite significant - and it was the first time I actually felt convinced the project was possible in terms of technology.

The base part of that was released 18 months ago, they have since 'updated' it what 5 times? Maybe six? And the 'updates' have been less than earth shattering, mnostly adding new ship (skins) and rewriting some code that shouldnt have been written wrong in the first place. IMO it still doesnt even qualify as an alpha, its still a tech demo that theyre allowing the public to play on/in.
If you look at other alphas and compare them you can see the obvious differences. Now the definition of alpha may have changed recently but you can see where other games have released garbage and it got better (in a hurry) while the SC tech demo, which has gotten slightly better is still an unplayable mess that constantly crashes and breaks.
The first part of ANY alpha is to make the game stable on as many systems as possible, that is something the SC offering hasnt come close to doing, I dont think its stable on ANY system including Roberts own in house system.
So while thye may be addingnew shiny things and using the typical misdirection of all companies until that 'alpha' is stablaized for a majority of the people who want to try it out then it isnt, IMO an alpha.
So while I did give my personal opinions theyre still verifiable by trying to play that offering. So it then becomes a question of definitions I suppose. But just throwing out anything that people can log into doesnt make it an alpha. Nor does updating it and adding stuff to it.
@Adjuvant1 To combat that you have an economy that is influenced 90 % by NPCs and 10 % by players. So the things you mentioned cannot happen because the NPCs "sell the spaceweed dirt cheap" even if a player cartel DOES try to manipulate prices. So Jonny Startingplayer will always have a chance to join the fun.
The game's economy was live when they announced the kickstarter. It will be pay to win requiring you to spend rediculous amounts of cash just to play it. That is pretty much set in stone. Its a real life cash economy and probably won't be any better.
What's your source for this?
You think that it will change simply because the game launches? They failed to project cost of development by over 30 million dollars. They don't even have a skeleton for their character models yet. You expect them to figure out how to make an economy that doesn't involve heavy cash grab tactics? I do not.
What I think isn't really relevant. I'm not stating pure conjecture as fact or set in stone. That was what you did.
Now, I have reasons for my opinions - and I can provide those reasons, but that's a very different thing.
I was just curious if your "facts" had anything solid behind them apart from speculation and what sounds like fantasy numbers. I mean, the project is constantly growing and changing - and you're surprised they can't accurately predict the final budget? I guess you don't have much experience with huge projects. That's an everyday occurrence with big titles.
It really isn't that complicated my logic and factual reasoning. "Experienced" developers can project numbers within a degree of accuracy. 10-20% is a reasonable fluctuation depending on the company. CIG had over a 150% fluctuation in their projected cost of development. Which makes me think they aren't very good at projecting numbers and aren't very experienced in such cases. Which anyone with a half way logical brain would never expect such a team to be able to develop and manage a full blown economy with accurate numbers. Since they were 150% off on basic development costs how in the world will they be within 20% of making an economy work what depends on many many more variables? @erillion come on man i hoped you to be at least half way reasonable here. You know those skeletons and working models you posted have been scrapped and they are creating new ones.

What about stuff that isn't just bought from npc vendors? This question isn't to be a smart ass, but do you think there will be no player economy? Won't it likely involve better and better ship upgrades looted or some other way gained from "playing the game"? If you have 3 of those, won't you want to sell them? How do you value something really good? At best , player trades by this point will completely forego cash and resort straight to a "like for like" barter system.
So then, what's the value of UEC if no one wants it? If what you're saying is true, there's absolutely no reason to have UEC at all, it's not even inflated, it's valueless. You have not solved a problem, you've completely obliterated commerce and the economy has regressed to the stone age.
@Adjuvant1 I posted examples from E:D and EVE - and guess what economy is working fine there. And do so in SC too i think.
W.r.t. rare mission items being sold by Players - IMHO the player can and should go out there and do the mission himself.
Much more fun too compared to simply buying it.
Have fun
But SC economy isn't going to be like those games, obviously, because of the game structure. I mean, there are instances so you can't exactly designate territory to be used, as Eve, also there are ways to 99% avoid pvp ( just try to get an instance without hostiles or otherwise warp away ), so there's little to no risk involved. Those are huge aspects of Eve economy.
E:D I don't know so much, honestly, I don't understand the economy, because I don't understand what's actually salable. Did E:D sell its in-game currency before the game launched? Will E:D have an in-game store where you can spend real life money? Does E:D have ships which the company is complicit with being sold on the "grey market" for RL cash? Does E:D have people planning to play ship refuelers or some other marketable role? Why do you think E:D is like SC "will be"?
There will be no economy because there will be no game. 2-3 months from now they will close shop. They have squandered all their money on a promise they cannot deliver and in order to try and attempt to stave off litigation release a half baked version of nothing but doo doo.
Folks they ARE in serious serious financial trouble. Laying off people, closing studios and the next wave of "I resign" letters are coming.
Years ago when I saw this concept I had grand hopes for them. I don't crowdfund because I dont believe in it, but this is going to end badly and I feel sorry for the people who gave them so much money.

Actually, the "base" part of SC alpha was released around 3-4 months ago - and it's been updated quite a few times since then.
Yes, there's a difference between this alpha and other alphas. Probably because the games themselves are very different
No, that's not the first part of an alpha. There's no "first part" - as it differs depending on your approach. Generally, beta is when you start to focus on stability and performance. Alpha is about implementing features and making them work properly one by one.
As for your non-sensical opinions - I'm unable to verify them by playing the alpha. Quite the opposite, really. By playing the alpha, almost everything you're saying is proven entirely false.

LOL actually I wear mine with pride I knew I earned it with Truth!
I will say one thing, I think we all need to just stop arguing (didn't say posting) just for the simple reason it is all coming to the end very soon.
I wish they would either launch or fold, but we aren't likely to see the end of the saga until 2018 or 2019.
Well if you look all the companies they have running around the world and how much it would cost to setup and decorate those companies. Buy licenses pay taxes on money they received and heck even outsource.
Exactly how much money do you guys actually think they have left? 111m, 120m, 150m would go very fast keeping up with bills. When I read most of these posts I get the feeling these people actually believe he still has all this cash sitting in some bank! That is really laughable!

Conquerable stations are planned for SC, just like you can conquer them in EVE.
There is no way to "avoid pvp 99%" in the dangerous outer systems without navy and advocacy. Its easier in the heavily policed inner systems. The best you can do is put the slider all the way to PvE and use a stealth ship. Again .. similar to EVE.
E:D does have a store, mostly for ship skins and cockpit bobbleheads.
E:D has a very famous "ship refueler" scene, which IMHO is quite heroic in their effort and pride to reach ANYONE, no matter how far away.
I think in the end SC and E:D will be quite similar, once both games have reached their desired "end-state", with all functionality added that Braben and Roberts have planned in their minds. They just have a very different approach to how to achieve that goal.
If i was a true fan of this genre to which i am not a big fan,i would have just wanted the original CLAIMED game, get that done ,show us what you can do then move on from there.
This whole delayed ongoing gimmick just looks like stalling to lure in more money, more ship sales.
Without all the added so called "features" there should already be a fullly fledged playable game that he was pitching early on .There really is no excuse what so ever from any fanbois, get that original game out there in FINISHED state and get the players playing, what is the hold up,features can be patched in over time, where is this game he PROMISED for 6 million?

Problem you have there....the 'fanbois' asked and paid for the stretch goals. The fans WANTED a bigger game.
How can I be sure? Over one Hundred and ten million dollars were raised when these goals were put out there. If they had not been reached then it would have been clear they were not wanted.
For Lando and Chris Roberts says similar things in the official channels too ... without "joking" that "one of us will die".
So one does not have to know "Starcast" for that. You mentioned Starcast, not me ... i just hit the "quote" button and said "Yes, it will come, but as one of the last features" ... because you need a game first before you can transfer it to private servers.
Example from the official channels: http://imperialnews.network/2015/09/10-chairman-episode-67/ (See question 7 about offline play and running your own server). --> ".... in the future, but currently that’s not on the development plans."
