this is crazy, first the pvp below 18 years isn't allowed anymore, and now this. i personaly think their going to far, your taking away people's freedom.
And what does the government offer for peoples who log off? If you make peoples log off after 3 hours, then you are taking the responsability for them not making fun anymore...
China is an oligarchy -- or maybe more traditionally, a dictatorship. The communism in China is just a nice way of saying, "You own it, but I'm gonna control it for you." But without the benefits.
Luckily for peoples in North America this would never happen
but I do agree that its prob not very health to play for more than 5 hours a day I shouldnt talk tho
I own my own security company and il sit and watch security cameras all day so ya know il be sitting playing warcraft for 6 hours + dousnt mean im actually playing half the time il be sitting in the inn chattin with peeps

From what I understandt this will only effect the people staying at internet cafes, they'll put some kind of a restriction where you are only allowed to play 5 hours when timers in the cafe. I don't really think it will effect people that own and operate their own pc at home.
Professor Hubert Farnsworth - That question is less stupid but, you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.
At first I thought this is really messed up and I felt sorry for Chinese gamers. Then I remember how the gamers there in general love to cheat, bot, hack, and farm items/game currency for eBay. Basically they just love ruining other people's fun online...
I still feel this law is just wrong. But I can't help but go "LOL UP YOURS, WTFPWNED!" to them. Sorry, I've never had pleasant experience with Chinese gamers (except those from, say, the US).

Their communist....thats what happens when your country does not have full freedom of rights.
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
Of course they're controlling. Of course they command the people like little peons.
But honestly now, what government does not do this? Oh yes, I know, you think since you live in america, land of the free, etc. etc.
Sorry, that changed a long time ago.
Them controlling the people like this, nothing new. Our government does it every day. And don't fool yourself into thinking they don't. China just does it more obviously.
They got their tiannamen square, we got our waco massacre.
Pot callin the kettle black. But in this instance. The pot thinks it's white, and so does most of it's occupants.
"Fear not death; for the sooner we die, the longer shall we be immortal."
Their government shouldn't be interrupting in their citizens private activies. Too bad they're not making an effort to fix the actual problems affecting their citizens.
As pointed by another poster previously, the main element that should be taken under consideration is the authoritarian political nature of China's regime, not communism itself. After all, in the last few years they are taking a slow turn to a capitalistic dictatorship.
I would consider that addiction problems are secondary and such laws, as any other concerning online gaming, are an attempt of cultural isolation. They are trying to regulate an area where social contact with foreigners may lead to political ideas that the Chinese goverment does not condone. One should remember that prodemocracy web sites are not allowed, as well as civilian social contacts for political debates (quite similar to previous dictatorships in Europe).
You should also take into account that China has a different culture from the western civilisation which is trying to adopt to new cultural elements brought from technological advances. When such fast paced cultural changes occur in a conservative nation, it is natural to see extreme measures.
Last but not least, I think that some of you hold certain wrong views concerning addiction. The object of an addiction is coincidental, it is the first object that becomes available which will allow the person to temporarily escape reality. One becomes addicted because of other problems (family problems, relationship problems, even more frequently financial problems or unemployment), being unable to bear reality he tries to find a way of ignoring his problems, be it alcohol, drugs, television, music or, in our case, online gaming. Merely restricting access to the object of the addiction is futile as it does not fight the problems that generated the addiction.
Currently playing: * City of Heroes: Deggial, Assault Rifle/Devices Blaster. Server: Defiant. * City of Villains: Snakeroot, Plant/Thorns Dominator. Server: Defiant.
From a democratic standpoint this is horrid of course.
As a gamer I welcome it.
If they could only change it to, "MAX 5 hours of farming per person per day" and we could all rejoice..

Shame on all of you far saying "5 hours is enough"... I never get to play my beloved EQ2 for longer than a couple hours anight, but on the weekends, I can sometimes get a way with a 6+ hour crackfest when the wife is out with her friends or doing something 'chick-like'... I would never want this sort of control imposed upon me! I am responsible enough to maintain a great job and I support my family and am very active as well, so why should the government tell me what to do? This comes down to some core political/philosophical issues... China has always adopted a 'one size shoe fits all' mentality with it's quasi-communist state... Marx and Engels would roll over in their graves seeing what China calls Communism...
I find articles like this reassuring, as the great 'Yellow Swarm' of China will never truly be a threat to the US in the fact that their population as a whole is stunted by it's goverment and the Chinese as a whole have yet to fully adjust their personal lives and characteristics into the 'developed' mindset... Also, China is still a receipient of foreign aid atm too, so anytime people start clamoring about the next superpower being China, remember this article...
Its nearly impossible to live in North America without paying some form of tax. Whether it be income tax or property tax. You cannot exist in North America without paying someone. Well, when your a kid you can. Income tax is illegal as stated in both American and Canadian law. I have this big 2 page document on it. Also about 9 months ago a guy won a legal battle against paying income tax. It was only supposed to be a temporary measure during the way. We already gave up freedoms. Pretty much you have to pay to exist.
As for China, they arent so held back anymore. They do have worldly news available to them now. Whether it be on the internet or their own newspapers. The only thing is, I have still seen alot of anger towards the japanese in pretty well much anything. There is almost always a column on how such and such wants some statues destroyed because of what they stand for, yet blah blah wont allow it. Its been getting ALOT better the last few months it appears. As the articles arent so predominant.
Anyway, I think this online gaming stuff is nonsense. Though its probably enforced for both health and productivity reasons as others have said. Though I still don't think its right to tell someone how to live their life to that extent.

Sounds like another quasi-educated poster taking your freedom for granted... Make no mistake about it, we are the country with the most freedom anywhere in the world... Waco and Tiannamen? WTF? How can these two be compared at all? If anything, you have proven a point of why America is so free, let me break your fallacy of an argument down for you: Waco was the result of America's tolerance to ALL religions...
David Koresh's movement was always on the radar as an 'extremist' religion, the Branch Davidians made no attempts to hide their beliefs, just as the hard core Mormons, KKK, Neo-Nazis and extremist Islam groups in America do currently... In any other country, these groups would have been punished, jailed or deported (the Brits are deporting Muslims on a wholesale level now after London bombings), but here in America we have a Muslim giving a speech to the 911 victims in a nationally televised prayer vigil after we watched whackos fly planes into buildings...
You need to check your facts bro, and spare us from your marquee knee-jerk comments that simply lump America's faults into a convenient argument for you to make, with zero credibility... Mine as well watch 'A Current Affair' to match your level of current event know-how... Jesus...
I think China is bashed to much in this thread. What country has gone through the last 10 years is quite amazing. They where a underdeveloped society, now they are a industrial superpower in growing bigger each day. I read in several big european political magazines that in few years USA and China will be the 2 superpowers in the world. Everything is cheaper in China therefor huge numbers of western companies move their factories there. China is starting to get really big in the car industry. Companies like VW have already opened factories there. Yes, not everything is good there. The weak people in the society don't benefit of the development the country goes through, but that isn't different in other countries either. People have right cut in, but I think they will have to give those rights soon if the country is going to take the last step to a superpower. But they have done some good things too, like the birth control. Something all countries with a to high birthrate should do. The earth is allready overpopulated and still to many kids are born. We are on the brink of a big catastrophy.
You americans have a tendecy to just judge other countries after yourself without considering their position. Not american = bad that is how you think. It's a fact. I recently read in a newspaper that a agency asked 10 or 100k people from different countries, how they would rate their own country. The americans rated themselfs nr. 1 in all the 20+ categories. Something that you clearly are not. Quite frankly you have some very fucked up situations in your country, not to mention the foreign politics. USA is rated nr. 8 on UN's Human Development Index. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Development_Index
Regarding the mmo lockout after 3 hours playing. I think it's just a way to try to control a situation that is starting to get out of hand. Very high amounts of people have to be threated against this addiction in China. They even have their own clinics for it. And it's not very unusual. All goverments try to control drug, alcohol addiction with laws and taxes. I don't think it will take long before other countries have to start with this too.
