Not sure whether you're talking about leaving school and getting fines, but if you are, people leave school every day and never return, and never get fines. You are forced to stay in school by the same mechanism that I am forced to stay on my job...hunger. Go ahead and drop out, anytime, anywhere. You can hustle money on the street like any other dropout.

I know what you are saying.  How the situation differs is that you CAN leave at anytime you wish, and deal with consequences that you brought upon yourself.  If we leave, those consequences are forced upon us by the law.  The only consequences of leaving school should be the loss of education, not fines.

You obviously didn't understand completely what I was trying to say.  You can leave your job anytime you want, that is a fact. So you have the freedom to do so.

This relates because you can either follow the rules  given to you from people who are higher up on the food chain, or mossy on out and go somewhere else.

actually, your winning the battle will probably depend on where you are (e.g. your chances are much better in SF, CA than in hicksville, Mississippi)

So you are wearing eyeliner because you want to be ... different? And the girls notice you because you were eyeliner? But they NEVEr noticed you before?....

    hmmmm

If that's your attempt at being different.. it sucks... There are many more ways to be different. How about being outspoken in class... Be charitable at school... Maybe start a school teen magazine... take pics of the girls and get the school to publish it along with articles about school life and school happenings... Just get known...

It's sad that you think the path to being is different is won by your appearance.... It's your acts that gain you recogniiton..... No one is known for just how they look... Even models have to be able to "MODEL" and even people that in the normal world people would consider ugly can be known as the most beautiful people on the planet not because of how they look.. but because of How they do what they do to make em look good.

And if girls only noticed you After you put on eyeliner... One of two things are possible.. .They probably think you're gay and want to have some one to talk to who they can complain about their boyfriends... Or They are probably the wrong girl for you...

There is an old saying where I'm from.... You never know someone till you see them in the morning...
Lay off the make up dude...... Follow some gender roles... I hate the fact that I can't use the girls bathroom... Why should i use the smelly stinky nasty pissy bathroom when there is a clean one next door? ... And yet women come in the guys bathroom and pee in the sinks...... Live with it...

Yea, right, take your story to the law, the police won't care, and an attorney will care for only as long as you can pay his fees. I got a big surprise for you, attorneys don't care about right and wrong, they only care about billable hours. When an attorney takes a case on contingency it's because they are weighing the time and the settlement. You can win a discrimination lawsuit and the attorney will walk away with more cash then you will. We have a guy that won his discrimination lawsuit, he received less than 10 gees, we received 75 gees. Who really won?

You are emo and you have bade taste in music... tisk tisk

I can respect that your taste in music is different, but since when is black metal considered emo?

I dunno, I'm just giving you a hard time because I don't like eyeliner or cradle of filth... And I'm really bored, but seriously check out trivium or symphony x or apocalyptica or dream theatre or even mudvayne, cradle of filth is just creepy...

Lmao, your cool dude. You remind me of my friend D-wayne. I like to argue too, actually thats pretty much the only reason I come here. I've heard a little of trivium, I tend to lean towards more symphonic bands tho. I like Dark funeral, Dimmu Borgir...stuff with a keyboard, or an organ. See, I like death metal...but I just can't get into it as much as I can black metal and symphonic stuff. Love lamb of god tho, they are considered death metal right?

heh. and to get a few things straight XD:

    Trivium - Complete, utter trash.

Dimmu Borgir - Older stuff is great, newer stuff just kind of... eh.

Cradle of Filth - More trash. I think i've heard 1 song from them I liked.

Lamb of god - Metelcore. Not a bad band for being metalcore, however. One of the few.

    And...

Ildjarn - What black metal should be. Pure, raw brutality .

But, now that i've completly strayed off of this topics purpose...

I don't think you know the laws,  If i don't attend school for 90% of the time, I 1.) lose credit and have to redo that class (or go to school on saturdays to make it up) 2.) get $200+ dollar fines (If that is the first offense, if I did that often then I would get $500+ fines and more).

But the law doesn't require you to starve.  The law requires us to be at school.  I know exactly what you are saying.

No, you do not understand reality. I drive into a nice cushy job in Detroit evry day, and the streets are filled with kids like you out hustling a buck, the high school dropout rate is 70% in Detroit. They sell drugs, they sell their bodies, they carjack, they mug, they gang bang. And the law doesn't apply because the law doesn't care. Take my offer, drop out and come to Detroit and compete in the free enterprise system of the street for as long as you can survive. You kids seem to think that is freedom and an option, so take me up on it and do it. Me, I don't think it's freedom at all, I don't want that kind of life, so I play by the rules the man lays down...freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose.

I see the same argument as that from the 1960s is still rolling around.

I ASSURE you that I understand what you are saying.  I am arguing this through the perspective of a student.  As a student, there are laws prohibiting us from dropping out of school untill you are 18 years old.  You DO have the ability to leave your job whenever you want to, no one is stopping you (excluding your children/ wife, if you have any).  The law ALLOWS you to leave.  The law PROHIBITS us from leaving.  I am not planning on dropping out, so I'll pass on the moving to detroit thing, but down here, the law does care, and they fine and ticket for leaving school.  You feel enslaved by your job, the only thing that is prohibiting you from leaving is yourself.  The law is what prohibits me from leaving.  There is a difference there.

Now I'm not saying that school being compulsatory is a bad thing, actually it is probably for the better.
  • olddaddyolddaddy Member Posts: 3,356

C'mon man, laws don't count for anything, people are going to do what they are going to do. The law never prohibited anyone from doing anything, it just delivers the consequences after the fact. The reason you don't leave school is not the law, the reason is because you want to get the education. And you want the education your way, not the man's way. And the man is telling you that that ain't gonna happen, and you don't like it. If you go to college, it gets worse, the university professors are GODS, when they say jump, you say how high, because they hold your future in the palm of their hands. There's a thread on this forum from a dude that he's off to the Army because a university acounting professor played god and flunked him out. I feel sorry for the dude, but only cause he didn't know enough to get with the program. My point to you is to get with the program. The law is held over your head like a scimitar, but you can walk out of school anytime with absolutely no consequence, just don't return. C'mon man, you think the law will care if you drop out and come to Detroit and meet and deal on the streets? You have the same freedom to leave school as I have to leave my job, which is none if you want to survive. Me, I just don't want to survive, I want to survive in style. I have my education, I know what it takes. My point is, you want to survive in style you learn to play by the man's rules and not wear the eyeliner. You want to be the greeter at Walmart, just keep wearing the eyeliner. You want to practice for your lifelong career, wear the eyeliner, and repeat after me, "Would you like another order of fries with that, sir?"

As to the 60's arguement, yea, I dropped that to see if everyone on this thread was a kid. Guess I caught someone who remembers the 60's reading this string.

I see nothing about the sixties in your contribution to this.

By the way, just an addendum, I have a wife and three kids, two in college and one a senior in high school. The one is high school is my only boy, and daddy makes sure he doesn't wear eyeliner to school, and stays with the program. He sees the kids on the street, and that reinforces where I'm coming from. He plays soccer, is recruited by universities, and is evaluating engineering programs. He has his eye (not eyeliner) on a plastics and rubber engineering program that starts graduates at $75 gees a year with a 95% placement rate. My middle daughter is an architectural major, and my older one is in a pre-med program. It's okay for them to wear eyeliner. So, where do you see yourself and your eyeliner in 5 years?

What can I say? I was young and a fool. I was more interested in the Supremes. At least they showed some cleavage.

Does no one here realize that ME putting ont he eyeliner was just a joke? I was just messing around, trying it out. I was seeing if I liked it or not. I didn't expect the compliments, In fact I was surprised. Also, I dont think it was because they thought I was gay, these are chicks that actually know me...they just came out and said I was hot since I had eyeliner. Another thing, some of my friends who were guys said it looked badass too. (straight guys mind you) Like my friend marcas for example. He was saying how queer he thought it would look, but he said it ended up looking badass with my pale skin and long hair.

Gender roles? does that mean you are against femanism? (sp?) do you think women should always wear dresses and never blue jeans? because thats how it was! Do you think women should always stay in the house, cook, and clean even if they want to get an education and make something real of their life? (not saying that staying at home isnt real, just saying that if women want to do something else no one should say they can't/shouldn't.

This isn't about me wearing eyeliner people, its about my friend. I was just messin around, but this is his serious look. He wears the tight girly jeans, girly belt, and wears eyeliner. He isn't gay, and hes a lil emo....But hes one of my best friends and hes honest about who he is. And, I don't think anyone should tell him that he can't wear makeup if he wants to. This has been his look for awhile, its him people...and now they are trying to take it away.

One more thing, I have a girlfriend...She thought I looked good in it too, and she likes me for who I am as a whole, and has the entire time we've been going out. I don't need attention from girls, I have a girl I care about. I was just making the point that it obviously doesn't look that bad on guys.

Ok, nobody cares about your opinion, so go preach it someplace else. I'm not saying I like those bands, but don't insult someone elses interests just because they're, GOD FORBID!!, different!

Realy? I'm not going to bother reading them, but I'll take your word for it. So, I congradulate him. I started this thread to get opinions on a topic, and I began arguing. I realy got too involved in this. I didn't come here to convince anyone that I was right, or to prove anything to myself. I asked for peoples opinions, and I got them, end of story.
