Well I guess this will be one the last times a CEO of an MMO post something on MMORPG.

One thing is to have an opnion another is to just plain  insult someone.

It is so sad that instead of this being a roundtable discussion with some one who directly affects a game in progress. All they get is whining and insults thrown at them. Granted a few of you showed some common sense.

But a good of you are just plain and simply given the MMO community a bad rap.

All i see in this forum was a good chance of asking some hard hitting questions shot down the drain by the few who couldnt curb their urges to attack someone who obviously is more important then themselves.

I write this even though it will fall on deaf ears as those who like to persecute never want to be told their wrong. i hope those who have take this oppurtunity to make this forum a medium for adult discussion do not give up hope.

    No INSTANCES! ?

Well problems I foresee with no instancing are the return of servers ran by 1-2 guilds?

Need a refresher on what thats like? see the Everquest classic servers currently ran and owned by two guilds. This type of gameplay tends to "shed" all the other players around them so that a few years later you left with a ghost-town server. That "uber" guild looks around, see's no one else is playing and they leave too.

Oddly this is the same thing that happens in FFA PvP servers with high/moderate death penatly's and looting.

Damn, all those questions that turned out to be false, I guess this game Isn't going to be unique afterall....ahh another bites the dust, more of the same.

That is exactly what VG is going to be like, I'm glad someone else remembers the result if "The Vision" at work...

If you are in a guild with a GM as its founding member or inner council, you get all the perks, customer support, boss mobs and phat lewtz...

    If not, not.

Except there is a heck a lot more color and more artistic artwork.  Game looks good, I'll be giving it a try regardless of the good/bad hype on it while it's in beta.

Both of your opinions are absolutely stupid. But yes, go try the EQ classic servers. I have, have you? No one owns anything, it is all there for the taking. If for some reason you should be unemployed enough to catch up to one of the major guilds, which is the only way they will have any impact on you at all, you will not be blocked out of anything. It is just like on any other server, communication is key. Simply communicate with other guild leaders and you will get your raid to happen. It's not like they will tell you to go away. It is the same on any server, everyone gets their turn.

I swear, do  you guys even think before you post? I would not enjoy my brain if I were you. Let some light in there.image

    Am I new here? Yep...

    Am I a fanboi? Nope...

I've played a LOT of games and beta'd quite a few. and when I say played, I mean years invested in many in my sig.

I cursed SOE when they dumped their SWG for Idiots revamp, and cancelled my second jedi Account (unlocked 2 jedi, one the old way by mastering all 32 profs, and did the whole village thing for second unlock). I swore I'd never play an SOE game again.

I signed up for Vanguard Beta almost 2 years ago. I finally get the invite to beta, and I've got to say that I have a great deal of high hopes for this game. I personally LIKE the Diplomacy aspect. It's not just a card game. You can GREATLY increase your faction through Diplomacy, not to mention the ability to get into areas or dungeons through negotiation rather than fightinh your way through. I also happened to enjoy the lore revealed by the Diplomacy quests, which I felt increased the immersive aspects of Vanguard.

Is it perfect? Heck no! But it's vastly better at beta 4 stage than MANY games I've played at release, and I strongly feel that by release it has the potential to be amazing.

I've completely stopped playing WoW and have been playing Vanguard for the last week because I've been ENJOYING IT A LOT, and I'm not a casual gamer (60 Feral Druid, 60 Combat Rogue, 48 Hunter, 35 Lock on just ONE of the WoW servers I play on...)

I think the problem with a lot of the naysayers has to do with the fact that they don't know a placeholder from the real deal. It's definitely still very much beta, but is nevertheless living up to its potential. I'll try and regularly update here.

    Peace!

(Feel free to fire off questions.. I'll try and answer as I've read that the NDA has been lifted)

    Played games list:
EVE, Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest, EQII (beta'd), Shadowbane, Guild Wars (beta'd), MxO (beta'd), D&L (beta'd.. I apologize), WoW, Vanguard (Beta 4), +others =)

sorry to pull you up on that, but you might want to re-check that.

its not lifted till open beta mk5 and that is only at Brads sayso (which might change)

Okay. I havent looked at each post or gone through this thread with a fine-toothed comb or anything... But this is my opinion:

1)Brad McQuaid actually took the time to promote his game on a 3rd party site that chooses what they promote and what they dont. Seems like he ACTUALLY cares about the game. He's put alot of time and is hoping for a return for his hard work.

2)Yes, it is pretty. Yes, it is fantasy driven. No, it doesnt look like EQ2. I played EQ2 and Vanguard is much better looking than it ever wanted to be.

3)The member that lives near Sigil... He/She might just be new. Give people a chance. Its honestly not all that impossible that someone lives near a company, heard bout a game, and said "I like it." Thats like saying "Anyone in California can NOT have opinions about games!"

4)If my investigations prove right, the reasons for Sigil not wanting MS support is as follows

A)MS wanted the game to release as Vista Exclusive on PC to get people to buy Vista.

B)MS, after Sigil's refusal to go Vista Only, decided that they would focus more on the 360

C)MS was beginning to attempt to place Vanguard on the Xbox 360 and Brad wanted it to be a PC title.

Sure, SOE has screwed things up in the past, but they're not at the helm in this title. They're just going to be providing the hosting. They have no control over content. Sigil is the only company with the rights to produce any sort of content updates to the game.

Come on people. Its something different than Raid Of Warcraft... If it has ANY solo content, we'll be lucky. The area is seamless and huge, you can see for like...7 miles or something. Flying mounts and future mounted combat people! The only game that I know of that offered Mounted Combat is ArchLord and the developers just dropped that game post-launch.

Give it a chance, quit whining. FilePlanet members get first access to the beta this month anyway. Not like yall will be losing money or anything. After all, its beta. If you want something different, tell the developer. Thats the whole idea of beta... Find bugs, give suggestions, get the game you think would be best. If the suggestion wouldnt hurt the game, theres a chance it'll get put on a list of future content.

Of course he cares about the game, it's his game.  He also cares about his perception in the market place since it's his "cache" that is getting the game where it is.

I think that is also the biggest potential problem for this game.  Whether or not Brad is able to separate himself from the old EQ, and the (false) perception that it's formula is a winning formula for today.  From it's inception Vanguard was billed as the "return" to the glory days of old (ala EQ) although Brad and Co. will deny that now.  EQ was so riddled with design issues that drove most of us absolutely mad, and I don't just mean the bugs.  There's a reason WoW has skyrocketed to 7 million players while EQ dwindled into obscurity (besides just graphics).

Don't get me wrong EQ was fun in it's time (it was also first which means a LOT) but it is NOT THE formula for success and bringing back the timesinks and penalties of old will not a great game make.

I hope that Brad has learned that but I have my doubts.  Personally I think they hate Blizzard so much that they refuse out of a psycological inability, to do anything that smacks of WoW-like regardless how well designed or common sense.

Started the Beta last night  and so ...

    1) It is a game of skill, not grind.  I died 6 times as a shaman doing a level 1 quest because I didnt know wth I was doing.  After some experimentation, I got it and quickly leveled to 3.  This is a nice change from the "just attack stuff until you get to level XX" style game.  Frankly, this is what appealed to me about everquest - getting a level does mean you have some skill.

    2) What is up with the hardware load on this thing, it actually affected my ability to enjoy the game.  Lag! I forced graphics quality down and down and down some more just to get a framerate that was even close to playable.  Now i cant see anything besides a hazy outline for my toon and the names bobbing around in the murk.  The only reason I can think of for this is the sheer range of the world ... I mean, you exist in a rendered chunk which is huge.  I will try it with an above minimum machine shortly.  The models are somewhat glitchy because there is far more model than skin to them.  This will pay off in the long run when you have really interesting monster animations but fro the time being it just makes it hard.

    3) The beta is not very buggy at all.  It was fun to play and the UI was sleak.  Sure you have restarts as the devs add fix after fix but that is normal.  I was able to run in a direction for almost an hour discovering paths, new npc groups, even gradual changes in terrain and climate.   I had no idea where I was going because of my clip plane but it was fun.

I don't usually QFE , but I feel I had to state my agreement.

It's not twitch, but careful decision making and management is real important in all spheres, from what I can see. You can easily succeed or fail just by the choices you make. Inattention to the whole environment or target fixation can easily get you killed. If the higher levels resemble what I've seen so far, AFK camping is going to be something of a challenge.

Point #2 is well-taken. This thing NEEDS 2 gigabytes of memory, minimum, if you want to avoid self-torture. I have a new core duo comp with 2 gigs and a middling late-generation graphics card (7900GS), and I'm seeing rather smooth performance at 1920x1200. I reduced some of the graphical candy to do this, the most painful of which (for me) was the rendering distance. I'm hoping to tune the graphics to be a bit more to my liking once the settings no longer randomize between sessions (sideways rant there). Getting a better graphics card sometime this year when the power-performance curve gets a bit less toasty is also on my agenda.

There's evidently a nice little feature to prevent kill-stealing. Once you "establish ownership" of a target, you get the XP and loot rights to it. Anyone who "helps" an ungrouped player does just that, and does not risk "accidentally" getting the goodies. The chat window announces when you establish ownership, and the target health bar is gray if you don't have ownership. I'm not sure what the full criteria for ownership is. If it's first-damage only, the feature is an obvious magnet for power-leveling. It would not surprise me if it was based on percentage of target hit points, so that someone who has no possibility of surviving the encounter in a like-level group cannot leap 10 or so levels in a single bound. Maybe this exists in other games; my play experience is kind of limited so I don't know.

What a load of tripe.  I've been in the beta for over a year, and there is no skill involved at all.  If you died doing a newbie quest then you should hang up gaming.

  • AlmondManAlmondMan Member Posts: 10
Sorry, but this game, like very other MMO coming out, this game sucks. Sure, you might come here in all your gamedirector highness and tell us all how much Your game rocks, but in fact, your game is completely void of vision and ideas. It's just a rehash of what we've seen so many times before. I believe you, Brad McQuaid, yourself said that you wanted to do EQ1 again, only better. Wow, great vision. You can't ever do a good game better than the original. It will never be as succesful because it will lack that certain magic that the original had.

MMOs have turned into a suckfest and here on this site we can read more about these suckfests than anywhere else. Why would we want to play another MMO when all it is is exactly the same as the last one, only it looks a little different? It's not like MMOs are FPS games where you play through it in 15 hours if you're slow, then spend a couple weeks online and hop on to the next title. No, MMOs you play for months and years. So really, why should I choose another game with just the same crap going on that every other MMO has, including the ones I play, when already there I have a good guild, reputation, power, opportunities and freedom to do whatever I want in the game to enjoy it?

No reason what so ever... New challenges? Pah, they patch in new content in the ones I already play. New graphics? Pah, the new generation of MMOs look worse in comparison to the contemporary singleplayer titles than new MMOs did 5 years ago.

Stop developing all those MMOs untill you've learned how to design one that doesn't completely suck.
