"Ah, so you wish to join us? Alright, please fill applications 357, 75B and 654C, send us a copy of your ID and signed contract where you agree to not ninja-loot, killsteal and always listen to raid leader. Then in next 3 months we will arrange a phone interview with you...hey! Where are you going!? ...didnt you want to join us!?"
I was a GM of a rading guild in WoW and vent was required to be a member. This is a touchy subject for some people but I found leading a raid to go a lot smoother with vent. It wasn't about excluding people. It was about being as productive as we could be as a guild. As far as people saying a vent requirement is wrong and they would never join a guild that had that requirement. I honestly wouldn't care. If you weren't willing to download vent and listen to me explain the strats. I doubt you would have been willing to do the mat farming and other downloads required. As far as a deaf talented player goes. I would have been willing to give you a try in a raid but I would have required that you go and read all the strats and I would have provided links. Once the guild has the instance on farm status and you as a member have your role down pat it wouldn't matter to me if you choose to get on vent anymore. During the learning of the instance though I found vent to make things go smoother and that is why it was a requirement.
I joined this guild just because of this. My other wow guilds im tryin to talk into requiring it as well. I think it's a really good idea. I want to know who is really a guy or a girl and who is faking being a girl. Plus by asking just a few simple questions you can learn a lot about their maturity and how serious the person is toward helping the guild or if they are just joining for free phat lewt. I think using voice chat is a must nowadays in mmorpgs, if you're a serious gamer.
What is really funny--- I asked my LOTRO guild leader to begin voice interviewing players interested in joining our guild. I figured that LOTRO even has voice chat built in game so it might be a good idea. Everyone in my guild was totally against it though, and thought i was being really weird to the point they all got angry at me. It was weird cause almost everyone in the guild uses voice chat.
I like voice chat. I think that it is way waaay better then having to type all the crap and read the chat box all the time. The advantages to using voice is so much compared to not using it for raids and pvp.
I think players who are so dead against using it to the point where it actually offends them need to get with the times. I think in many cases players who refuse to JUST TURN ON voice chat( just to listen)are so so selfish, especially when it's a feature that is built into the game.
What's the big deal? Why is it so hard for some people just to talk?
LOL, an actual interview to join a guild in an imaginary fantasy world consisting of 0's and 1's with other kids?
All guilds have a recruitment policy, at least any guild worth the time. If a guild that relies on voice comms requires you to use voice comms for your application, what's wrong with that?
The people arguing against it are just being obtuse.
Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I can understand using vent for the game....well just....but to recruit...what?
Peopel areguing against it are the "sane" ones.
WoW is a form of entertainment.
Demanding an interview through a microphone before you can join a guild in a video-game that is meant to be for kids to enjoy themselves is borderline INSANE.
Yeah you will notice that the majority of mmorpg.com forumers are ventrilophobes. On top of that they are mostly solo and pvp phobic as well. So if the majority opinions on this forum are any indication of what the average developer thinks, you start to see why MMOs are in a slump right now.

I haven't noticed that to be true. I see a lot of people who enjoy rp and find it hard to stay immersive with voice chat, which I think is reasonable. Most people seem to enjoy groups but want the option of solo also. (including me) I see people on both sides of the PvP issue.
Developers need to take more chances. If they're all about the profit of the product and not the creativity, innovation and do not attempt change, they are business people in my opinion, not artists. Many MMORPG developers SAY they are about the game and making it different, but they SHOW they are mostly about the money by giving us new games that we feel we've already played. There has to be a time that they stop blaming gamers and start taking risks and producing games that really do offer something different. They might be surprised at people's reception.
Anyway... sorry for the derail. On the topic, I don't think there's anything wrong with setting up your guild the way you like. All voice chat? Why not? It won't affect people who are not in your guild and the people who join obviously want that sort of thing. I might not want it as a requirement, or be willing to have a voice chat interview, but that doesn't affect anyone else either. Live and let live, no?
Just to clarify, I hate voice comms too. But I can totally understand why a guild that relies on voice comms, when it's a major part of how the guild operates (you people have been in a raid guild right?), would want to interview people first.
I prefer non-voice comms guilds, but I can see the advantages of those who use it.
I think the people saying "ha ha ha interview for a game ?! ROFL LOLERCAKES - it just a game lolz ", are exactly the kind of person the guild is filtering out by doing interviews. Mission accomplished.

This I have no problem with. i'm more than willing to turn on vent for recieving directions and such in raids.
However, being forced to talk to have an interview, or any other such nonsense, nope.
Yeah I think it's the forced vent to join guild many have trouble with.
Personally, I found voice chat to be a hinderance in large raids. Can have an open channel with 40 people (25 now) with someone blaring music, background noises and the "who is that british sounding guy again" problem. Vent works well in small instance runs or in a battlground when it's just you and a handful of your guildies/friends that go in together.
It should never be a requirement to be able to raid. Well before TBC was even mentioned my ol' alliance guild did MC with No Vent, and *gasp* No Mods. Yes my pally actually had to pay attention and press a button to cleanse instead of relying on decursive. So yes it can be done without it.
