I have to agree with the poster in some respects. I really hope they make the Jedi class a very hard to attain level like they did with the original SWG. The best thing about PreNGE SWG was that you had to actually work at it to get a good character especially if you wanted to be a Jedi. I really liked that. It was never easy to be a Jedi in the Star Wars world and they made it the same in the game.
After the NGE, any moron could be a jedi and it helped to ruin the game as much as the NGE. So I understand where the poster is going with this and I do hope they make it a hard to attain level. That is one way to help keep things more in line with canon for the game.

Hard to attain? Really? I don't know what SWG you played, but the vast majority of the population in the SWG that I played either had a Jedi character, or were hologrinding (and later, village grinding) their way towards one. It may have been a time sink, but it certainly wasn't hard, as evidenced by the legions of people that dumbed down a fairly unique game into a grind for an uber-class.
The funniest thing was when the NGE hit, oh how the grinders howled about how all of their 'work' was for naught. Poetic justice, in my humble opinion.
As for canon in TOR, that's about the only time period where it actually does make sense for thousands of glowbat-users to be running around. Its too bad Lucasarts, Sony, and thousands of players were too thick-headed to figure that out five years ago.
i dont understand why all of you crybabies are crapping your pants over the jedi character. you either play it or you dont. simple as that. quit bitching about how only certain people should only be able to play a certain class. get over yourself and realize its just a damn game.

Don't you feel that you sell yourself cheap here? Seriously, I dont mind how people play, as long as we are not mixed.
A Role Playing Game, no matter if online or single player, takes a heck of a long time to create, and SWTOR is, as most agree, a special chance for something really new: a MMO with story. Imagine the chances, the possibilities! Why not take this as an opportunity for all of us to be more demanding to ourselves, less complacent?
When some here just seek for a simple "pew-pew" hack and slash "who killed the most and has the biggest shoulderpads" sort of game, why do you seek it here? There are dozens, no hundreds of MMOs who already fulfill that. What makes TOR special is, that it is driven by personal, heroic stories. If you dont care about that, I am quite sure SWTOR isnt for you anyway. How can you like a MMO so story-driven when RP and story is of no relevance to you? While I dont question your rights to play as you wish, I question the logic in chosing such a story-heavy "new" kind of MMO when there are plenty simple MMO who are perfectly tailor-made for more reduced desires?
For me as a Roleplayer I have high hopes for SWTOR. It is as if I live in a city entirely made up of Fast Food Restaurants so far and finally I have hope that a Noble Cuisine Restaurant will finally open: SWTOR. If you are not into such cuisine, it is fine with me, but dont come into such a restaurant and then behave like at home, yelling around and ordering a Whopper, because as people go to a noble restaurant also for the atmosphere, many will go to SWTOR for same reasons. That is neither elitarian nor dictating, it means that in some places some ways to behave are misplaced, and a story-driven MMO is just the wrong place to carry WOW-like attitudes into. If you cant behave mature, you should not be in certain places, that's a simple rule of every civilized person.
There are many classes in SWTOR you may play without any need to take great care about how to act, though maybe a merciful, kind Sith or BH is evenly out of place as a rude and childish Jedi would be. It just ruins the atmosphere for which some of us are playing such games. I know on US servers there is alas no tradition to enforce RP, at least not in those MMOs I encountered. I hope however, Bioware has the stomach to make at least one server where they enforce RP. Then the rest can do whatever the heck they want.
Still, I dont fathom what you folks seek in a story driven game like TOR, when Bioware takes so much effort to make something deep and profoundly new? When you are unwilling to let yourself get in touch with the story, the world, the atmosphere, what is it you seek there, I wonder?

Wow more complaining about Jedi. Yes there will be a ton of people that will play Jedi/Sith classes. Does this make sense to the overall story of the game? Of course this is suppose to be the largest war in the galaxy ever where there are thousands of Jedi and Sith fighting it out. You will not be unique or special by playing one by any means, Bioware knows this most people know this, GRASP THE FACT. And to the people behind the toon of course there will be your assholes/fools/idiots call them what you will I probably fit into this category but Elikal are you any better? This story is essentially about a galactic war so yeah it comes down to which guy can kill more of the enemy. I can understand how you want the Jedi type ideals to make an effect on gameplay but I really doubt it will go past your own personal story.

Wow is a great game, I don't actually play it mind you but all that's wrong with it is your biased perception, which you are completely entitled to though it doesn't make you right either.

Well said. TOR will be nothing like SWG. I doubt any MMO maker will ever be stupid enough to try and mimic the biggest fail in the history of MMORPGs. And no,it wasn't just because of the NGE. That game was a big fail from the start. It's gone and it's never coming back. Get used to it.
Far as worrying about who plays, you take that risk no matter what game you play. As soon as the game goes online, you will always run the risk of running into assholes. That's just the way it is. And sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but no game has ever been immune to this no matter what the revisionists like to say.
Since they are allowing people to select jedi and sith force sensitive characters from the start that means that
- gasp -
They will have to balance these classes against all the others from the start leading to not an "alpha" class or a "hero" character but a regular balanced class.
Meaning that if there are a million Jedi fighting a million bounty hunters it should be as balanced as if they were fighting a million sith instead.
Yes in an ideal world those Jedi would be forced to stay in character and yada yada yada, i'm sure there will be an RP Server where you can have the gaming experiance your dreaming of.
Make your own MMO and make sure to make everyone take an IQ test before they are allowed to join your game.

Yay! That's exactly right on. There's no point in worrying what they will do with the game or who's going to play it, you have no control over that. The only thing you can control is wehter you'll expose yourself to these things or not. You can enjoy a game for what it is and totally ignore people, most people do that in MMOs anyway...
Any social activity will expose you to all kinds of people, we see more diversity now because MMOs are mainstream. Good or bad, honestly it's neither. And I think a lot of people have rose colored glasses as to what consists of the good old days, don't make me believe there were no assholes before. The probability of running into one is just higher. Most of the time though people are fairly nice.
I recently caught the Star Wars bug again. Some friends are running the Saga system pen and paper game. I haven't thought about Star Wars since Episode III quit playing ten times a day on HBO but this week, I have been walking around humming the Darth Vader theme. This brought me to inspect SWTOR more closely yesterday. Some things are unavoidable. When I shop for my son's clothes and and toys, Star Wars merchandise lines the walls. At 37 I would love a more mature Star Wars but he likes the swords and the robots and the funny aliens. No one can say for sure but to me the art and videos I've seen so far seem to hint that Bio-ware will do a better job achieving a balance for both kids and adults than Lucas did with the last three films. I'm pretty sure their will be the stereotypical six year olds who can't type, thirteen year olds who are all about the L00t/pwn speech and forty year olds who yell at people for not adhering to the canon or reporting every single "DarK_!Maul*" character to the GMs. One thing to remember is that IF the Star Wars universe were real it would have jerks just like an online game would. Certain groups tend to be more annoying than others in Star Wars and in real life. Some teenagers are great players and are intellegent. Other's remind us of the long drawn out Gungan scenes from Episode I. All I'm saying is someone has to play the dumb Gammoreans, someone has to play the annoyingly cutesy Ewoks.
Point being is that the biggest problem is that not everyone will play to their personality. Their will be some 450lb guys playing half naked Twilek's, Some really mature and well mannered people playing Jawas, and some complete goobers playing Jedi. That diversity could be a good thing?
EQ1 had a fantastic community and people began to remember who was good at what. In more simple games like WOW, people have 20 characters so few people know each other for very long. If every Jedi was great and wise as a player then what would set them apart? Maybe with all the Sith, the Jedi lowered their recruiting requirements? Just like in EQ1; Some Paladins we're wise and heroic and some were complete tools.
I'm all for letting half the Jedi population be immature or goofy, or whatever. That means if I play my Jedi or Bounty Hunter or Space Basket Maker better, then people will remember and I will earn a rep. Remember that Hayden Christiansen (Annakin) was a Jedi and no one reminds me more of that "I pwned U!" type of punk than he does.

Heh, good post. I dont mind diversity, on the contrary. I have seen fat, bad Twileks and kind, intelligent Orc Paladins in EQ2. I dont mind simple concepts, I just feel that l33t gaming Jedi will ruin the atmosphere. I dont mind when people dont roleplay, but I go to a MMO to join a community, to be part of a social environtment and the egoistic mindframe of some players just baffles me. They just think about "ME ME ME", how "I" want to play, how "I" want to behave - there is zero empathy about how to cooperate, how to create a community that lasts. For me the value of a MMO depends of the lasting qualities.
Thats one thing I learned from comparing my experiences with SWG and LOTRO. Both were/are good games, SWG once and LOTRO now. The big difference is, in SWG people clung to ONE character, and thus they put a lot of effort into this one char. They could not rush through the game and most chars were memorable, somehow. The result was a lasting community and a memorable time. LOTRO on the other hand is were people have tons of alts, due to fast levelling people rush through the game like there was Armageddon next week; the result is, there is practically no community forming. Chars level up in a short time and then are placed to rest and people make alts. When you rush through a game like that with little emotional connection you dont really care, and overall there is little atmosphere in a game.
From my perspective its a waste of time. It was a nagging feeling I had in the late days of EQ2, when there were just people running around, grinding like hell and all the feeling was gone. One of the main reasons I never got into WOW.
I dont get it why so many apparently see a more demanding, slowed down gameplay as hindrance instead of a chance. Its like everyone is spoilt with fast food and sweets, instead of taking time to make a proper meal. *sigh* It is kinda disheartning that even such a minimal demand as "think about your char" is seen as exotic elitarian.

Ok what the heck was the OP talking about? .. OP your not alone. There are tons of us that feel the same way. Only time will see. I think if we EXPECT it to look like or combat like .. you get it.. we might be let down. I'm going to try and take it for what it is on launch day and go from there..
Remember that Hayden Christiansen (Annakin) was a Jedi and no one reminds me more of that "I pwned U!" type of punk than he does.
Hehe, great post and a great punchline too. You are quite right ... little annoying, spoiled brats with lightning fast fps reflexes shouldn't have to worry about being 'out of character' while playing a jedi, haha.

Exactly. I see the old SWG used around here many times as some model for how great communities were, and being someone who played back then I can tell you it was NEVER that way. You had greedy crafters who tried to bleed you dry, sellers who tried to sell you a lemon in a backpack, combat centric players who trashed talked, group leaders who were always on a power trip(major reason I am against forced grouping) etc etc. It was anything but a holy community of do gooders.
I'm sorry but just because somethingis cartoony does not mean it is ment for children. KOTOR's man addiance are the 30 something with disposopale income who grew up on this and can afford to pay. Yes playing games like wow and everquest might appeal to younger kids at first it does not stay that way. to gain a lvl 80 character in wowo takes months if not at least a year of game play so times that buy $15.00 a month, then u have the price of the game around $30+ for wow and BC then another $40 for LiK. Then the ever expensive system while wow can run on a loe end pc what is kotor's specs going to be? so yes for a few months you will have to waid there teenies and younger but mmo's are for us the 30+ crowd.

Sure, I'll make an MMORPG. You going to give me the loan?
And I -have- played WoW. You have no say in whether or not it's a good game, if you've never played it.

I said I don't play it, I didn't say I never played it :P
