A poll is meaningless unless it is a representative sample of around 10,000 people. I wouldn't put too much stock into it.
This might sound naive, but I give credence to a poll here that has over 500 participants and is composed of people who are interested in gaming.
It is a fairly representative sample of those who care, and are interested in, this game.
It also demonstrates that people want, desire, and expect SWG 2 features. Frankly, I think the poll results are hugely telling in that respect: give the customer what she wants.
The way you interpret polls baffles me.
What it demonstrates is that a substantial majority (58% of everyone who has voted) DO NOT want Star Wars Galaxies 2 or a game like it. Just under 5% abstained from answers, which I am assuming is because they have either not played SWG or are torn as to whether we should ever revisit SWG. 37% want SWG2 or a game like it. 37 < 58. The poll results smply demonstrate that - out of the people who voted - MORE people want a new game than those that want SWG2. If we are to give the customer what she wants, we would go with the majority... and the majority don't want a crappy sequel to a really, really crappy MMO.
As has been rightfully pointed out however, this poll is not reprisentitive. If the poll were conducted on the Official TOR forums, it could probably be passed off as reprisentitive (and it would have substantially more than 506 voters), I guess it would be considered reprisentative. This one certainly isn't.
Yeah, I don't see in any way how this poll is a "victory" for the people that want SWG2. If you're like me and think a real poll needs more than 500 people then it's meaningless. Let me also add that any poll where people can vote more than once is even more meaningless(You folks with the multiple usernames know who you are).If you DO put credence in this poll, then you would say that the majority of people here don't want SWG revisted. 37 % is not a majority in any version of mathmatics that I studied.
With TOR being 300 years after Kotor 2, this allows Bioware to do what they want with the game. Unline SWG where they were restricted do to the timeline. TOR can literally write their own story, since there are no movies, books (that i know of) or comics that focus on their era. With that in mind, TOR can go anywhere! People can have their Jedi/Sith without complaint, since they are very abundent in this timeline, and there can be endless ammounts of possiblities here. Plus im sure we all can agree with Bioware and Lucas arts working together on this, this game has some huge patential! You will be seeing me there on day one!
SWG, before being sabotated, was the best and most innovative mmorpg. It was complex, immersive. I didn't care about the bugs and the other problems. It was like living there. The crafting system and the economy was very very good.
Now I see that bioware will focus on the "story", "make your own star wars saga" etc. This is a step back. Swg it was real. The cities, the economy. No things for kids or causal players. It was free and anarchic, it was a next generation mmorpg.
I remember I had spent hours in game talking about engines and ships components, and that was only a small part of all the game. Before the sabotage, you were able to be a creature handler, to genetically create animals and sell them, you had professions and not "classes", it was free. And -this- freedom made us feel like being in the SW universe, not in a story driven arcade game based upn quests. There were quests, and storilyne, but you were free to follow it or not, and you had to follow the fate and destiny to find them, like a jedi.
I really think they sabotated it as it's been said.
Now, I'm afraid that swtor will follow the other recently released mmorpgs, that it will be more simplified. I don't expect freedom, housing, a good trading and crafting system, player cities with politics and elections, things outside the main storyline of the saga, but thing that made that world -real-, alive.

First things first. This poll only reflects the opinion of MMORPG members who follow SW:TOR.

Thirdly: As someone said earlier this game is Guild Wars with jedi and a sub fee. A glorified co-op game.

a well done SWG2 with all the features of the first one (pre nge,pre cu) and all the bugs fixed, without memory leak, without jedi and more pve content and weapons/armour set can be the best mmo ever. without any doubts

And even with all those advantages to manipulate the poll, they are still only sitting at 37%. I don't understand why so many of them are even bothering to do this. THis poll isn't going to be seen by Bioware and even if it was, Bioware is not going to change what they are doing midstream no matter what the poll results are.
It can go both ways, and companies have the resources and personnel to manipulate polls much (much) more than fans ever possibly could.
Let's get back on track, however, which is that this POLL is immensely telling, immensely significant, and shows that a great deal many of people interested in SW: toR expect, desire, and even demand SWG features.
Heck, many people would prefer a SWG-2 to SW:toR. Ignoring this is ignoring the ENORMOUS elephant in the room. EDIT: nearly 40% of the well over 500 participants want a SWG 2 or SWG-like game; that is enormous and should not be ignored by anyone, particularly developers.
You really need to learn more about how professional polls are done before spouting such nonsense. If you want to put credence into an unscientific poll then be my guest. Any professional pollster will tell you that this poll is too easy to inflate and doesn't have anywhere near enough participants to be considered vaild. Now if you can show me a poll with about 10,000 participants who only voted once where there is a clear margin for error stat then I'll give it more weight. Until then it's just a feel good thing done by people who are trying to kid themselves into believing something that isn't true.
The Old Republic time period is far more conducive to a marketable MMO. Jedi in high quantity are more justified, the story is open to new ideas, and new things.
I am certainly not hating on the concept of SWG2, being a Bloodfin & Kauri veteran myself.
For me, it all comes down to the fact that BioWare is kickass- I trust whatever they think will work better. Stop the insanity of pitting these two worthy things against each other. It's a friggin' new SW MMO. Get excited. SWG or KOTOR, a Star Wars fan is going to be happy.
Having played SWG from launch until the NGE and a short time afterwards, I can say that the game had it's moments, but i'm looking forward to SWTOR being that and not SWG2.
SWG had an amazing skill system, very unique to MMOs. However, flaws in the combat system created almost unbeatable templates, and a large majority of the player base used these. I was a squad leader from July 03 until they revamped and then ultimately destroyed the profession. I never got the feeling I was really making a huge difference, until the revamp that is. Unfortunately they didn't balance it properly in the TC even with all of us screaming at them that they needed too. Reason for this...the NGE, why bother coding more when that was coming?
SWG will have a special place in my heart as it was my first MMO experience and IMO the community of SWG was probably one of the top 5 in all the MMOs. The issue with me, for it being a sandbox MMO, they never gave us the proper tools to really play out our Star Wars fantasy. Later on of course with Story Writer this changed a bit, but even systems such as the bases owned by players/guilds had huge flaws in them. The War in Star Wars wasn't really there, except in slide shows from massive battles, although fun at times, got very annoying since the server code was crap.
SWTOR interests me for a few reasons. #1 is Bioware, this company is respected, has published well received games and also Canadian like me . The story pillar they discuss has me really interested. I think a huge thing for MMO players is having things in game impact their character or the world in some way. The mulitple choice and consequence system is going to add huge replay value to the game.
Other reasons include Jedi/Sith finally having a proper place to be out and about. Too many Jedi in SWG killed the immersion for me and many others. Now I hope they really focus a lot on the Faction vs Faction aspect of this game. That includes BOTH PvP and PvE.
People need to get over with SWG and move on . I cant wait to see bioware magic on this one , and i do mean SW:tor not SWG . Hopefully soon.
Just looked at the poll numbers, its really suprising 38% would like to see a SWG2. Especially suprising with so many SWTOR fanboys on this forum. Ill give you all this SWTOR looks like its going to be a fun game. And if thier ever was a plan to make a SWG2, and I doubt thier ever will be. SWG done right from the beginning would be a big hit since thier are alot of people that would love to see a well done sandbox.
---'m sorry, but SWG was flawed in MANY ways. I enjoyed it for its time, but I am glad this game will be nothing like it. SWG was too much of a sandbox and not enough Star Wars. It was not exciting and was never deserving of the SW name in my opinion. This is not to say that it was not a good game... but a good Star Wars game? I think not. who ever posted this is totally misinformed about starwars
StarWars is indeed a sandbox universe. Take a look at the movies and books and comics and cartoons... it's sandbox... you have thousands of races, ships, planets, customs, themes, religions, trades, jobs... starwars is nothing but sandbox and should be nothing but sandbox. The title "StarWars" is just nothing but name of a beautifully created universe by George Lucus... why not use it to it's full potential as sandbox. Having a linear game cripples his creation... i want to explore and enjoy, I don't have to picks sides. SWG was great for that.
Well apperently George Lucas doesn't agree with you since he was fully supporting the revamp of SWG in the first place.

What did you expect? Yes - it had flaws.
But how was it not enough Star Wars? The point wasn't for everyone to relive the life of Luke Skywalkers and go on as many crazy adventures as him. The points was to live the life of someone in that time. I had the most fun in that game on my traders and entertainers at times. The immersion was great from player housing to cantinas to creature handlers, etc. I didn't have to go out and fight to feel like I was actually living in that time. I did do that as well though and enjoyed it as well - but it wasn't the strongest aspect of the game. There were a lot of problems and bugs - but the idea was right.
I don't know about the rest of you - but it will be fairly hard for me to enjoy a game with 1,000 other jedi running around me. Just won't feel very into it imo. I'll play this game I'm sure - It'd be dumb for me not to try another Star Wars mmo.
What did you expect? Yes - it had flaws. I expect an unbroken game for the amount of money I'm paying the company every month to fix those things. There is no excuse for the amount of flaws the game had. That's poor design and poor maintenance. But how was it not enough Star Wars? The point wasn't for everyone to relive the life of Luke Skywalkers and go on as many crazy adventures as him. The problem is that many of us didn't buy the game to be a tailor or dancer. We also didn't buy it to stand around and socialize at the cantina. We bought it live the experience of a smuggler, bounty hunter, commando or any of the other combat professions. This part of the game was never done right and that was a killer for many of us. I never said the game was bug free or some of the core things weren't jacked up in anyway - because they were. But the ideas were there.
I don't see what was wrong with the experience of the combat stuff - I played both. Yes - like I said - there were some major bugs that really hampered it.. but I still had a good time exploring and leveling up my skills and fighting iconic creatures. Didn't really experience much pvp in my time. It all was a good idea - just poorly implemented... that doesn't mean it can't be implemented or shouldn't just because one company f'ed something up.
And I realize the jedis were starting to come in force - but those will seem like nothing compared to what we'll see in SW:TOR - atleast they had to do something. WoW has introduced a whole new type of gamer - most of those gamers weren't playing MMOs at the time when SWG was doing OK. The number of jedi in this game will dwarf the number of jedi pre-NGE and the number of jedi post. People had a desire to be other classes too. It's really going to cheese it up for me - but just my opinion obviously.

You're making the same false assumption that others are which is the belief that everyone wants to be a jedi. You couldn't be further from the truth. If Bounty Hunters,Smugglers and other classes are given the same care as jedi (which PRE NGE SWG NEVER did) then you'll see a lot of balance. The reason a lot people went jedi in SWG was because that was the profession that was not only more stable, but was getting attention with almost every patch. Plus, they were an alpha class so PVP naturally became a jedi slugfest in a time frame when jedi were supposed to be extremely rare. If you look at SWG now(yes it still stinks, but bare with me here) the jedi do not outnumber the other classes because Commando,Smuggler,Officer,Medic and Spy were made interesting.
I'm sure there will be an edge to the numbers in the jedi's favor but so what? This game is set in the time period of the jedi and sith war. It's not the era of the Empire Strikes Back. I suggest reading the first Dark Bane novel to get an idea of what this era was like.

The difference is there is a whole different breed of MMO players playing SWG than there will be SW:TOR. WoW was probably the first mmorpg for over 60% of the market now. It really changes a lot.
And I'll eat my shorts if SW:TOR makes it where a majority of people actually want to be the commandos/smugglers/officers/medics/spys/BH - although I'm guessing their class selection will be very limited which will hurt that to begin with. Also not having a true crafting/entertainer professor hurts it as well.
I know what the era is like. I know the jedi aren't killed off at this point. But do you think it will be realistic to have a jedi every 3 feet in a town running around? Heck no. I will be surprised if the jedis don't hold 85% of the "main" character slots. Kinda makes playing a jedi less appealing.
I played SWG about a year after it came out (to give it time to fix some of the HUGE bugs my friends at work had compained about.) I felt it to be lacking a sence of admertion for the players. In most of the mmos I have played I felt like I was the hero or villian on the screan, hell even WOW most times made me feel like I was a Gnome Rouge stalking her prey. But SWG never made me feel that. Also single player crafting stunk. I quite after 2 months and started playing COH.
If god loves the fools ,and god loves every one, dose that mean we are all fools.

Old Republic gives a good reason for having thousands of Jedi and Sith in the same time period. Galaxies timeline that is not so.
Plus KOTOR is a sweet, sweet game, even now. An MMO based around it will be all good.
It will be story based like the KOTOR games and that seems ok to me.
I just want to have fun adventures.
I could not have said it better.

For me, it all comes down to the fact that BioWare is kickass- I trust whatever they think will work better. Stop the insanity of pitting these two worthy things against each other. It's a friggin' new SW MMO. Get excited. SWG or KOTOR, a Star Wars fan is going to be happy.
Swotor ....peroid
BioWare Kenobi youre our last hope
Well apperently George Lucas doesn't agree with you since he was fully supporting the revamp of SWG in the first place.

LOL
I had missed that NGE joke in all this time. Good find.
I want SW: KOTOR.
swg pre-CU - that's all I want
