Guys, I'm sorry to say this... "the heavy team-play aspect of FF11 has been deemphasized" I get the impression that knowing your job and doing it well just won't be as critical in this new game. I never played FFXI but that aspect of it seemed like one of the strongest features of the game.
Premature statement. I don't think that will be the case at all. Look at the logo, SE says there's hidden meaning there, well not so hidden all characters are in a circle back to back with weapons on the outside. it's meant to symbolize group play and the importance of alliances and friends.
I don't want it to be true either, but are you saying they lied during the interview?

I think it means there will still be party-oriented gameplay, and that players won't fail at life if they don't play in groups.

Listen to the interview again. Curiindi above is right on. Don't assume because you think you know what casual means that it will be what you think. Especially if you have never played FFXI. It's just not SE's style to make systems that don't require strategy and thought.
I really wonder why people keep saying Final Fantasy XI has "Asian grinding".
Has none of you ever played Everquest? Heavy grinding has been a part of mmorpg for a long, long time. Final Fantasy XI was designed to be like Everquest at the time.
It's a grind in FFXI, cause the majority of mobs you would fight from 1-75 were incredibly inbalanced, resulting in a game of leveling off entirely of crabs, bats and beetles.
Hmm... that doesn't sound like my play experience...
In my leveling, I've fought crabs, bats, beetles. goblins, mandragoras, lizards, gigas, wights, imps, crawlers, damselflies, pugils, different birds, Quadavs, Yagudo, Orcs, Antican, saplings, tigers, weird mushroom things, weapons, demons, magic pots, golems, goobues, leeches, malboros, cardians, bees, wasps, skeletons, ghouls, flying eyes, various rabbits, worms, bombs, tonberries, wyverns... and a number of other things I'm sure I'm forgetting.
Sounds like you got ripped-off.
The imbalanced mobs where a well documented complaint by many of players and reviewers. Fighting a Chimera the same level as a crab was far more dangerous and thusly avoided by the advanced players.Sure I killed some other mobs, depending if I was doing a genki, AF, or mission, but primarily level mobs where crabs, bats, and beetles. This is based on my experiences within the first 6 months of FFXI NA launch, if that makes any difference (I know the game has changed a lot since then)

So let's instead make all enemies the same difficulty? That seems rather bland and not well thought out at all.
Veteran players often lament all of these crazy new games that have tossed out everything that worked before in place of something new (i.e., everyone flies, FPS-gameplay, card decks, and other weird stuff). And now we have a game franchise that people have loved, and with a new announcement the excitement is high. It could be the old design elements were true and that all some folks wanted was everyone reset to level 1, a new map and some new gloss upon traditional fantasy MMO design basics.
I doubt it as I think there is more excitement for TOR *shrugs* you are talking about a highly respected and recognized ip so of course excitement will exist for it but as a big square-enix follower I haven't heard much about this game so I'd challenge how much "casual" excitment exists for this game.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I hope that FFXIV is nothing like FFXI.......I have probably played well over 30 MMOs and FFXI is one of the worst I played.....From the terrible graphics to the group only demanding gameplay FFXI needs a ton of improvements.......I will probably give FFXVI a look but if its anything like FFXI then no thanks.

Not very good at games that make ya think or work together will other people then...heh
... or that group content is ignored because people would rather solo.
This is it right here the quote. This has been tried and tested. Gamers take the least path of resistance. If they can solo it they will, which makes it even harder to find a group. People say finding groups in FFXI was hard, Ill tell you whats hard try finding a group in a solo friendly game, its darn near impossible.
Forcing players to group up for leveling just hurts those that start late into a game/server, In my experiance of MMOs (which is mostly WoW, pso, D2, and a few other games un noteable trials.) forcing players to group up or not play doesn't work, like with endgame WoW only unable to keep up with others due to them being 7 levels higher than you kills your ability to play at all.
Its a Balance between Solo accessability and promoting grouping, as for the "excitement" I think most people are more interested in the graphics of FFXIV being in game than any thing else, some are still hoping that Square-enix can really deliever a true FF in a MMO game. Sadly till they develope good races, this game will never attract non die hard FF fans.
When I played FFXI no matter what class I played I never found it difficult to find a group. FFXI was all about the community, grouping together and having fun. I will suspect it will be no different in FFXIV.
Grouping needs to be a lot more rewarding then soloing, but soloing shouldn't be impossible. Players will do whatever is easiest, if grouping is not a lot more rewarding, they just are not going to. Soloing doesn't have to be just level grinding either. There can be tons of sideways character progression that players should be able to do solo. This would especially be good so people could keep busy doing other things while LFGing. I am also hoping you can do level all jobs/classes on the same character as well, I think this helps community a lot when you don't have tons of alts all over the place. I remember when playing FFXI it felt like you just knew who people were even if you didn't really know them. I also hope there is a lot of challenging group based missions like FFXI to unlock other content and what not. FFXIs character progression has always seemed much deeper than other MMOs to me.

Actually, it doesn't make any difference how rewarding grouping is, people won't group if they don't want to. The grouping in FFXI was essential to lvling because there was no other way to lvl, it wasn't very rewarding because 1 linkdead member could remove 3 hours of lvling by causing the group to wipe. As for community I agree until a group goes bad, then they turn on each other like starving wolves.
I myself am really hoping that FFXIV will have the charm of FFXI but I really hope there will be some changes. I loved FFXI but I'm not the same kind of gamer anymore. I used to just play MMOs for social interaction, so grouping with a party all day and EXP grinding was really fun for me. However I don't think I would get the same fun out of it anymore. I really like questing for things and getting stuff for my character. I also would like to be able to finish more than 2 quests a day hahaha. None the less I still love grouping and raiding =^-^=. I hope the UI will be good. I felt the UI of FFXI was a bit confusing in the beginning.
Edit: and the crafting too, I think the crafting could be more fun xD. It used to frustrate me to no end when all my supplies would blow up (=_=). Or well I guess it just disappears.

lol yeah I totally agree about the community thing. It was great that everyone seemed to know you... until one day you make an ass out of yourself and no one wants to ever group with you again ^^;. I was in the caterpillar place... can't remember name, we all called it the ball sack room. Anyway everyone in the zone died except me the Red Mage. I got this brilliant idea that I wouldn't raise anyone unless they paid me =D...oh so wrong I was. They just called on someone else and told them how much of an ass I was. It was hard to get a group for a bit after that T_T. I learned my lesson, don't be a bitch.

The community in FFXI is second to none. People were held accountable for their actions. especially in end game. If you "stole" an HNM or something like that your name got drug through the mud.

Very true, the community in FFXI is amazing, and that's because of how the game was designed.

The only sad thing about the community is that SE released the LS Community website too late... that dealt a blow.
But the community, linkshells, and grouping all works very well and I expect that they will develop this sense of unity amongst playersin FFXIV as they did in FFXI. I personally prefer seeing another player in the world and saying "Sweet! Another adventurer!" rather than "Is he going to kill me or join me?" :-O

Yeah that's it, the crawlers nest =D hehe thanks! Oh link shells, I had so many they cluttered my inventory xD. I remember when my bag would get full and I would bite my lip and ponder if I should throw some out. Yeah I really liked how most of the ppl in the game where friendly. Though sometimes attitudes tend to vary per server. I was on world Seraph in FFXI. I play EQ2 now, I was on Nektulos server and everyone there was always fighting and calling each other bad names *gasp*. There was so much drama on that server I left it for Lucan D'Lere. I'm much happier on that server and ppl seem to be friendlier on it too =^^-.

I agree that LS Community may have been really good for FFXI if it had been available earlier, but I'm always conflicted whenever I think about LS Community.
The concept and what they offer is great, but I find the whole thing extremely inconvenient. I find it a lot easier to visit my linkshell's forum or FFXI's wikia page. Maybe it's just me being lazy with my links and favorites.

P.S. "OH NO WE'RE OUT OF BACON AND EGGS TODAY. BETTER RALLY THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND HEAD OVER TO THE GROCERY STORE TO BUY THEM EGGS AND BACON FOR MY EPIC OMELETTE!" ~Plasmicredx
As for community I agree until a group goes bad, then they turn on each other like starving wolves.
lol yeah I totally agree about the community thing.

Ahh that was crawlers nest.
The community in FFXI is second to none. People were held accountable for their actions. especially in end game. If you "stole" an HNM or something like that your name got drug through the mud.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)
Now Playing: N/A
Worst MMO: FFXIV
Favorite MMO: FFXI
