Something just occurred to me. The three month wait for the transfer... ...this gives people who start a brand new character on the NA1 to catch up to the people who will be transfering over to NA1 in 3 months.
Makes sense to me.
Sidenote: I purchased a Chinese Aion account so I could test out the game and see if it was anything special. I do not expect NCSOFT to give me an American account for free. Nor do I expect them to transfer my characters to any NA server from the Chinese ones.... ...just food for thought
Indeed, infact they will still be ahead of people. If I am correct EU servers will have been out longer then 3 months when NA ones come up. Sure you can't take your gear, but your skills will be ahead of fresh characters on them.
This and character limitation is what scares me most about the NA servers. I understand the reasoning on character limitation originally having only one server. I do not understand the transfer option, skills seem far more imporant that gear initially.
I dont see the issue here, Tasos even posts a clarification:
Our offer of character cloning / transfer to American players is because we had said that we would try to accommodate them should they want to start playing on the European server.

haha. I used to be a DF supporter until the little lack of features began to pile up into one huge mess and now being strong-armed into purchasing a second client.
Tasos never, ever, never said anything remotely familiar to what you posted. Tasos said that character transfers would be offered. He never mentioned or even remotely hinted at the need to purchase a new client. He used his spin speach to hide the fact that without the initial North American purchases and subscriptions, this company, Aventurine, and this game would not have survived as long as it did; thats my feeling.
Now you know that the North American player-base were reeled-in as unsuspecting participants in a weird experiment whereby you were all recruited as investors in this experiment. Little did you know that you weren't willing participants in a bait and switch.
You have to buy a new client, the same one you already paid $50 for again. Dont think for a moment that you're getting out of paying for that new client if you just want to transfer your character...lol...your gonna get a transfer fee that is equivalent to purchasing a new client. And if you think otherwise, that's some awefully strong koolaid.
You didn't purchase a client.
The client was free.
You purchased an account.
Now they are requiring NA users who wish to play on the NA account at launch to purchase the client they've been distributing freely for 4 months.
You’re grasping at straws. The client is the same as the account for all intensive circumstances. You got a free month, then were charged for the client/account. Now you have to pay again for NA-1, either by paying up front for NA-1 Launch or paying over three months with an additional transfer fee with restrictions. Either way it’s the same. I’m less concerned by the money cost as I am the principle.
Let me clarify.
Tasos should be kicked in the nuts for 4 months straight for what he's doing.
However,
That doesn't change the fact that
Everyone playing DFO right now never purchased a client. The client was free. I downloaded the client 2 weeks before I got my account. You didn't need an account to get the client. We payed for an ACCOUNT.

Yes,

Edit: I want to clarify this a little more.
Not long ago a president was set in the way that MMO are distributed. A lot of companies stopped charging for the client because of a court case Blizzard won against a company that distributed a hack.
When you load the client the first thing you have to to is except the ToS/ EULA. NOW, when you agree to it, you agree to a LIMITTED LISENCE AGREEMENT. See, I had a problem with this when Blizz won thier case cause I didn't purchase a LIMITTED liecense agreement when I baught WoW, I baught a game, a game that now I don't actually own. If I buy a single player game, I onw that game, not so for an MMO now-a-days. You can't really charge for software when you also charge for a limitted license agreement.
I didn't buy software from Av. I purchased, esentially, a limitted lisence agreement.
No where is one of the limitations of that lisencing agreement stated that that I may only acces the content of the world from a EU server. I never purchased an account that was limitted to where I may access it. Because of that, I don't feel that Av has a right to limit the use of my agreement.
LOL... rotflmao
You didn't pay $50 for an account, you payed to login to the game you downloaded. Aventurine made it freely distributed, because their own meager servers wouldn't be able to handle the load.
Anyone can also download an EQ client for free. But that does you no good.... UNTIL you buy the game and have an account!
The client isn't free or even yours, until you can login to it. It's free to download, because you can't do anything without first buying it.

Only people that will need to buy the game twice are peopel who want to play on the NA serer day one. Everyone else can just transfer and pay for a transfer fee tha most people saw miles away. Now that said, AV did say that players would be able to have 1 character per serer not account. Either they lied, or didn't know that it wouldn't be possible for that. I believe that the deal they have with their NA publisher, should there be a seperate publisher, is the reason for that change (which is the only change)

That is a misdirection. They do not have to buy the american client but have to then wait three months. I.e. a clever way of saying that they dont have to buy it but if they want to be there at start, which most people will, they have to buy it.
Tasos is a scammer and this whole game is one big scam.

No one forces you to buy the game again. IF you hate buiing it again for your territory, your law and your taxes. Just wait 3 months.
Just imagine the servers where released only 3 months latter. Since you will be migrated with your skills, you will just continue playing, but now with people on your timezone and somewhat better ping.

As it stands now there is only one server, so there is only one character per account. Once additional servers open, you will be able to create a new character on a new server.
------
Players in North America are welcome to participate in the European Launch. The plans for US servers aren’t finalized at the time of this announcement. We will offer the option for character migration to US servers for N. American players who wish to use it. We have had people playing without problem from all over the US and Canada. That being said, our servers are located in Germany and distance does affect ping-time. - Tasos
------
Our first release is the European release. The North American release will follow as soon as possible but not until a few months later. We’re allowing players from N. America to participate in the European release due to this fact. Of course we’ll make some allowances for these players if they would like to move to the US server when it launches. - Tasos
------
They're right after the European servers, but not soon enough for a lot of players to wait. We don't have a solid date to announce on a N. American server and that's why we're allowing N. American players the option to play on the European server. Ideally we would have loved to be able to launch world-wide but we just don't have the resources to do it right. - Tasos
------
Athens, Greece – December 5th, 2008 - Audio Visual Enterprises SA and Aventurine SA in a joint statement today announced that their highly anticipated MMORPG title Darkfall Online will launch across Europe on January 22nd, 2009. North American players are also welcome to participate in the European launch of Darkfall which will precede a North American launch.

So, let me turn this around on you... Where is the very important piece of information about transfer delays, fees, and client rebuy if starting on NA launch day? Don't you realize if that very important piece of information was stated beforehand, many of us NA players would not have started until the NA launch? I'm willing to bet that Tasos knew, which in my opinion, is why he conveniently failed to mention it. $$$. You asked for implied text or hints. I'm sure you'll spin it in some way to fit your gripe.
the Aion devs aren't LYING TO YOU to get you to buy the game now, are they??
Hey, I was just stating my observations. in no way did I intend for my observations to anger anyone, sorry for instigating a nerd rage...
I think a lot of folks are reading way too far into this, and making a big deal out of something that isn't even worth a second thought.
Aventurine is a video game studio. They tried to create a game, they may or may not have intententionally lied about the features in their game (note the word intentionally), and they tried to release their game. Having failed in almost every aspect of community relations, they have now earned themselves a reputation as money-hungry pigs with nothing better to do than devise schemes to steal money from the very community they rely on.
AVENTURINE

lol. But seriously, if they are telling you what you need to know beforehand, thats not a fault on their side that this thread is a bunch of nerd raging pricks.
They didn't have to even let you transfer. Most companies don't. Concider yourselves lucky that they are doing their best to pull their own strings with their own game.
I consider myself lucky that i did not spend a single buck on this game as i waited of the initial heat to see how it works out.
And oh boy was i lucky to do so..and i don`t really care much if the game is good or not it`s the obvious money grab taking place under the cloak of a shady company. Dozens of other companies managed to find a professional solution to such issues. AV suddenly can not? Makes me lol..
I am not even an NA player but i will not stand by why other MMO players are pulled into a RL moneysink...no matter if they are from EU/NA or Antarctica.

How about if they did this?
"Oh sorry guys, but the publisher won't let you transfer. It's out of our hands."
And then 3 months later...
"Good news! We have made arrangements with the publisher (which were insanely difficult) to permit NA players transfer to NA servers RIGHT NOW! Enjoy!"
They'd be saviors. Instead, they tell it like it is and the nerd rage blows up.
P.S.: They play the game because they enjoy it. If they didn't enjoy it, they wouldn't play. Why are you here QQing over this game if you don't even play, or never did?

Really? They tell it like it is?
So, since they have given you so much information on this topic perhaps you can answer 3 simple questions that I still have.
1) How much will the transfer cost?
2) What restrictions will apply to the transfer?
3) Who is the NA publisher?
Pretty simple questions for a company that is so willing to tell it like it is. Afterall the NA server is launching in less than 2 weeks. The answers to the questions above have obviously been known to Aventurine for quite some time now.
Lucky for us though we got you...
I know I won't be the only one that is most grateful to you for translating Aventurine's "Tell it like it is" policy for us simpletons to understand.

You say they tell it like it is. Please inform us of how it is? Ok we now know 2 weeks before launch that if you want to start on the NA server you have to purchase the client. Yep they said it like it is. A little late maybe but said it like it is.
You can transfer in 3 months after NA launch for an unspecified fee, no gear and other restrictions. So where is they said it like it is? There is no info there for a player to make an informed decision on whether to transfer, buy a new client, stay put or quit. Now what happens if say 2 weeks before transfers they say here is the news. Transfer cost $25.00 US, you have no gear or money and only those that subscribed before April 1st can transfer. Or What if they say Transfers will cost $10.00 US, you take no gear or money and you lose 50% of all skills. Now I'm not saying either of these will happen just saying what if.
The thing is Aventurine is being very vague like they always have. If your player base cannot make any informed decisions you will just lose players. This is happening now. If they would have been up front earlier or even now about transfers then I don't think there would be this commotion.
The other thing is wouldn't you want to know who the publisher is?
I don't understand why people are hailing the new NA server like it's some kind of messiah: It only took 3 months for the EU server to die; it will take less now that everybody is familiar with the game and has their macros written.
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.
someone posted above all the statements made by AV in regards to EU and NA servers, nowhere on there does it say it WONT charge, in fact it sais ""SOME"" means of transfer will be available. Well guess what nubs, there is SOME means of transfer available, JUST has they promised.
next time get your parents or some eligable adult read things before you fork over your/their cash to buy a game.
take a look at EVERY other MMO out there, yes you guessed it, same shit.
Me and my friends waited for NA release (after playing beta) because we knew there was a 99.9% chance that transfers wouldnt even be available.
I say its all the people fault for not thinking or reading properly. Period.
now either play EU, play NA or play WoW, either way, shut up and play already.

Someone posted....a hellova lotta people posted. Wake up. When I purchased my car, no where did it say that I can actually frive away with 4 wheels.
Get ready to pay more to transfer. In order to transfer, you'll have to be an active subscriber on the EU server, so thats $15 buck there, then pay a transfer fee, and knowing Aventurine, lets say its $50 bucks too.
Then after Aventurine completely botches the transfer, you'll be sitting with nothing anyway. All I can say is good luck to you and your boyfriend in NA.

Tasos is a scammer and this whole game is one big scam.
My gaming blog
No one forces you to buy the game again. IF you hate buiing it again for your territory, your law and your taxes. Just wait 3 months.
Just imagine the servers where released only 3 months latter. Since you will be migrated with your skills, you will just continue playing, but now with people on your timezone and somewhat better ping.
here's the main difference....this is taken from Forumfall:

No you may not. This is something we have discussed at length, and we believe that it would allow for easy spying, taking away from the gaming experience. If you play an Alfar, for example, you may log on your Elf scout just to check if the Elven town of Charybdis is well defended at the moment or not. If you want to play a different race, you may do so on a different server / game world. "

You can only have one character per Darkfall account."

As it stands now there is only one server, so there is only one character per account. Once additional servers open, you will be able to create a new character on a new server.

- Tasos

Our first release is the European release. The North American release will follow as soon as possible but not until a few months later. We’re allowing players from N. America to participate in the European release due to this fact. Of course we’ll make some allowances for these players if they would like to move to the US server when it launches. - Tasos

They're right after the European servers, but not soon enough for a lot of players to wait. We don't have a solid date to announce on a N. American server and that's why we're allowing N. American players the option to play on the European server. Ideally we would have loved to be able to launch world-wide but we just don't have the resources to do it right. - Tasos

Having failed in almost every aspect of community relations, they have now earned themselves a reputation as money-hungry pigs with nothing better to do than devise schemes to steal money from the very community they rely on.

lol. But seriously, if they are telling you what you need to know beforehand, thats not a fault on their side that this thread is a bunch of nerd raging pricks.
They didn't have to even let you transfer. Most companies don't. Concider yourselves lucky that they are doing their best to pull their own strings with their own game.
<Mod Edit>

Thanks once again for the answers.
