I could not care less about SW:TOR. I expect the game to be awesome, knowing BioWare. But SW just isn't my cup of tea (I'm more of a Trekkie, and was very disappointed by STo).
What if I was a SW fan..? With my love for BioWare games, I'd surely buy the game and enjoy the IP as presented by the best story-tellers of this time.
I expect SW:TOR to be a big success. Can it reach break-even in 1 year? I'm not sure, but I think it'll have a player-base as at least as big as Lord of the Rings online has. I expect SW:TOR to become a solid name in the MMO list. A WoW Killer..? Unlikely as Jon already said ;-)
BioWare is a company that has made a very good reputation for itself as a producer of quality, story based RPGs. To expect a major departure from a basic formula that has supported and grown the company into one of the bigger brands in gaming is just silly.
My only contention with this, is that they aren't making a single player RPG - they are making an MMO - there are many similiarties and differences between the two, they can't just take their 'normal bullet point development cycle' and slap together a loose party system, and an AH and force feed it as an MMO to the already existing MMO community; especially when you want a monthly fee from it.
and yet again, in an swtor thread we have teh reasonable people who put forward unbiased views, and then we have the "fanbois" ( i hate that word but its accurate) that try to belittle the words of people who have actually played the game as it currently stands , even tho they themselves have never even touched it.

Exactly. And yet people get bashed whenever they suggest this game will be mostly single player... Linear instanced stories with 2-3 other people at a time does not make an MMORPG.

Definitely agree about the space portion. JTL wasn't perfect, and there was a crapload of downtime between the action, but the action itself was spectacular. There really is nothing quite as "Star Wars" as spinning in your cockpit, lining up that perfect shot on your X-Wing opponent only to be blown to bits by his YT-1300 friend. Yea, even *dying* in JTL was still fun, because it was "Star Wars."
TOR captures the exact opposite part of "Star Wars" space. Instead of the personal conquest of blowing up that TIE Fighter, TOR emphasizes the epic conquest of blowing up the Death Star. Let's face it, every space battle in Star Wars was a major offensive, whether it was over Yavin or Endor, the only exception being the Jango/Obi-Wan chase. From what I've seen of TOR, its space component captures the epic scale very well.
The thing is, neither game captures *both,* like the movies did. The Battle of Yavin is an excelent and instantly recognizable example, as it switches back and forth between pilot perspectives and battle perspectives. You see that TIE pilot lining up his shot, and right afterwards you see his ship explode, with a view of the rest of the battle. Now, it's impossible to switch between views that way in an MMO, and to expect that is ludicrous.
What could happen, however, is keeping the personal view of the player's ship--close up or in-cockpit as well as the three dimensional dogfighting combat just as JTL has--and planting that in an "in-and-out" epic battle as TOR will do. So, you hit the "space" button and are immediately thrown into a scene full of capital ships, fighters, and all sorts of other ships and objects, and you fly through it all in three dimensions, dogfighting with the fighters and bombing the capital ships. Put it all in a Battlefront II-like setting with more combat going on in the background and you have the Perfect Single Player Star Wars Space Game. Take out a few NPCs and replace them with players, and you have instant Space PvP and/or Co-Op PvE content.
Why do you assume that the people who are discussing the relative merits or lack thereof of some of Biowares design decision with SW-TOR are doing it because they have some expectation of pushing Bioware to change those decisions....or even trying to astro-turf the game?
This is a gaming site.... I assume that the people posting here are doing so, in part, because they enjoy the hobby....and enjoy the intellectual excercise of discussing different aspects of that hobby, including opinions about design decisions and game mechanics with other enthusiasts. Really, is it any different then fans on a sports site discussing the relative merits of the Designated Hitter Rule?
Frankly, if the discussion here was limitied to a simple regurgitation of the known mechanics/features of any particular game....rather then a discussion of thier merits.... and "What if's" and so forth...this site would be about as entertaining as watching grass grow.
Note...that is not the same as trolling....which would be posting to simply annoy, frustrate or get a rise out of some-one. I'm sure there is a fair share of that going on surrounding TOR.... but alot of fans and critics alike simply enjoy expressing thier honest opinions and enjoy exploring the basis by which others hold differing viewpoints.

You can expect this article to come under attack from both extremist sides since it is middle of the road and won't gel with either of their myopic views.Your not gonna convince peopel who have already made up their minds about this or any other game based on limited information and pure speculation positive or negative with any kind of arguement let alone a reasonable one.
I have to wonder if you've actually ever taken a position on anything. So far I've only seen posts that criticize others for taking a position.
Is your position that people should not debate about things because no one is ever right and every argument has at least two sides?
I'll take a positon when I have enough information and perosnal experience to make an informed decision.I won't make a decision based on speculation and limited official information either way.I've made plenty of decisions and stands on games that have come out adn I have ahd eprosnal experience on whether through purchase, free trial or open beta.
Debate is good but debate implies discussion and yelling two disparate views whilst belittling or flat out ignoring the other instead of giving reasoned counterpoints or the willingness to conceed a well delivered point does not constitute discussion and that's what we get 99% of the time in these foruns on any subject.
Given current information I'd say its a very linear themepark fully voiced with a heavy story focus and of course the SW IP on top of it. I agree no one can predict the outcome, it could be a success or not who knows. EA is often finding ways to screw things up and maybe they'll find some for SW too.
I couldn't care less if other companies are throwing less money at mmorpgs, if this game is failing. Big $ usually comes from big (bad) companies such as EA, Activision leading to a forced release and company shreddering (Mythic, Origin, Westwood, Bluebyte!...)
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

So you rather hit invisible walls in your free roaming shooter minigame? Once you have free roaming you have exploration and then you must limit how much there is to explore. I think a tunnelshooter isn't so immersion breaking as running into a invisble wall in space.
Article- it was good and worth reading. But I'm not so sure if it will change the stubborn minds of people even if they read it. It won't change what they want at least.
The only point i would like to make is, Bioware has already said the game is neither a full thempark or full sandbox. It is a hybrid of both.
So even while both sides fight over which system is best for the mmo genre, Bioware has created a game that sits right in the middle.
Exploration, crafting, in-game economy and pvp. All systems that make a good sandbox game. How deep the crafting is still unknown, and there has been some devs that said open pvp is in the game. Skill trees, PVE quests, and Raids. All staples that make a good Thempark game. Deep Story and full VO, two systems added that will enhance both sides of the coin, that will give TOR that extra flavor that most mmorpg's don't have.

Just because he focused on one side of a gripe people have doesn't mean there aren't people complaining about both.
As to actual space combat, I can easily see it being the more railed, Rebel Assault 2010 style gameplay just because I think there are far more SW fans who would be able to actually participate/complete that content than anything requiring them to think in 3-dimensional space/movement.
Take the average person, put them in a space-sim like X3:TC, Freespace 2, X-Wing v Tie Fighter, and just see how they do at that. See how long they last, how difficult of content they're able to complete, etc. There is sadly a genuine reason that the space-sim market is in a dearth right now.
Most people just are bad at those spatial translations, but they can handle it when it's reeled in a bit, and treated more like Starfox than Wing Commander. And I'd wager the % split of Potential SW:ToR customers who can grasp 6 degree spatial translations and those that cannot is probably 30% get it, 70% dont.
Bioware isn't making a game, system, feature, etc that's going to immediately exclude that 70% who don't get the spatial movement.
