Whether the money goes irregularly to a shady type or officially to the game company is immaterial. Either way it's a symptom of defective game design.

I have not played them all, but I have yet to find an MMO that you can't buy some type of in game item for with a quick search of google... So they are all defective?
I can agree with that ; )
If you're talking specifically "levels" the only one i can think of is EvE...

Congratulations! You just inadvertantly named every mmo that has ever been created. Before companies had their own cash shops to tap into, the "shady types" had Ebay, a IM account (or email) and paypal. And for every mmo that will be made, these types of things will still exist.
It's like how the gaming industry ignored the modding community for so long before they realized that people were makin money off their backs, so they decided to start offering their own version of modding called DLC and low and behold, the masses rejoice!
Soon people will get over this foot stomping phase just like they did when SWG raised the price to play MMOs from 9.95 a month to 14.95 per month all while claiming that SWG was a premium mmo. Everyone moaned and groaned but guess what the standard price for a P2P mmo is now?

That's exactly correct. In any business once they start a new trend they don't look back. This kind of thing is only going to progress and advance.

Yeah people are funny like that...you ask players on this site if they think they are getting their money's worth when they pay 15 bucks a month for a sub and 90% of them will think "HELL YEAH" this is cheap entertainment. But then you have a company throw in any sort of cash shop in the mix and all of a sudden they are greedy backstabbin bastards.....go figure.

There's a big difference between buying advantages on a black market and buying advantages from the company itself. The latter is officially sanctioned. If you get caught doing the first, you lose your character.
People don't mind fluff items being sold, but when it comes to gear and levels, there's going to be a backlash.
Besides, the law of supply and demand that dictates sub prices doesn't have a whole lot to do with in-game bought advantages if you ask me besides the price that they can charge for them and have them sell. The issue at hand is simply whether in-game advanatages being buyable is fair or not. Before, they were not in Warhammer. Now they are starting to become fair-game and officially sanctioned. The slippery slope is where it gets to the point where you can't progress without paying extra money, and the winner's are determined by whoever paid the most money.
This one level for 10 bucks thing isn't that big of a deal to me. The one I'm more concerned with is when I get rr80, I'll have to pay something like 20 bucks just to have the chance to get to rr100. If there was some cool new expansion area from 80-100, then I could see myself paying. But just to unlock level progression for money, that's pretty shady.
Not to mention that I'll probably feel compelled to buy the RR pack to boost RR gains up until 80 because I'll be pretty gimped if I don't.

Very misleading statement.
Ask them whether they feel they get their money's worth in relation to Golf, Surfing, Movies, Club hopping etc, and of course they will state yes.
Ask them whether it is their money's worth compared to other MMO's priced exactly the same and you won't get such a resounding response.

I don't know the details yet about this "expansion", but this one is easy enough.. If you don't like what they are offering, let them know with your wallet.
Essentially you are complaining about what they are selling, yet clearly state you'll probably buy it.
edit: perhaps its situations like this, that MMOs are in the state they are in?
LMAO what a bunch of sorry arse Drama Queens we have here .. ITS ONE FRAAKIN LVL .. do you understand how insignifigant this is ... There are quests in game that take 15 minutes that will give 1 lvl also did you come QQin here for that also ... Get a grip and go change your stained panties........
No wonder the MMO industry(communities) suffers when we have people waiting to pounce and whine for any reason and most dont even read the notes they just react ... wahhhhhh lmao
Grow up .
Dear sir, i must agree with you
Everyone is QQ for a level...in other game you can CHANGE THE FRAKKED FACTION if you pay...and here everyone QQ for a single level...
One level doesn't seem like much what happens next buy your way up to RR80 special abilities you pay for, it'll just turn into the same mess as F2P game while still paying a monthly fee.
Also those stating the fact that you could always do this from pwrlvl'iong services don't seem to appreciate the difference between something that is officially against the rules (albeit tolerated to some degree by force) and something which is supported. It's a bit like saying "well we're having real problems preventing all these burglaries, maybe we should just lagalise it and take a cut of the profit".
What you do in game has an impact on everyone elses game in an mmo, there is no such thing as fluff, when in game items and features stop having an impression on others in the game you may as well be playing a single player game.
Kind of funny reading this and seeing several people who have previously condoned or welcomed cash shops, even funnier seeing the same people then saying something like "it's not this that the problem it's what will happen further down the line", it's a bit like goldy and silvery only made of iron.

You're still not getting it... It's item shop creep.
If the playerbase doesn't make a big objection to RMT that they feel as a negative influence on the game, then the developers will start selling more and more invasive RMT.
Out of every single item shop being introduced to an MMO where it had none before, I always, and I mean quite literally always, see the following defense to excuse the RMT:
"It's only 'X', at least it's not 'Y'".
The sickly ironic thing is that X has slowly started to become Y each time it happens. The more MMOs that introduce RMT, and the more that RMT is expanded on. If enough players don't 'kick and scream' and "QQ" as you put it, then the developers will cross the line for those who currently claim to not be bothered by it.
So if players sit back and take the RMT additions without any complaint at all, I guarantee you that they will be selling more than just one level.

I don't uderstand why so many people still get their panties in a bunch when they continue to add things to these cash shops that players have been doing underhandedly under the noses of these companies for over 10 years now anyway. Pretty much spitting in the face of all their hard work by completely ignoring the EULA and doing what they want for years.
So what? Now that companies are trying to make an extra buck off the urges of a very small percentage of players that would do this anyway by paying for some smuck in a basement to crack game codes, build a bot and release his creation onto me and my favorite farming spot but instead joe shmoe can click a button and buy a level, thus leaving me to continue doing what I was doing. And now what...I'm suppose to feel like my way of playing is threatened ? Meh. Who care?
Hmmm I take that back...obviously some people do care:
Hackers
Bot makers
Gold sellers
Players with a false sense of online camaraderie that won't invite joe shmoe to his guild or help him level are worried about what he does.
I've fought the good fight about my outrage over 10 years ago when players were scooping up max characters, items and buying levels from other players in AC, DAoC and EQ. Back then greed and convenience of players cracked the lid to Pandora's box. Now companies have decided to finish the job and open it all the way and players are mad? Sweet irony!
well said...
As I pointed out earlier, people have buying this same stuff since the days of UO, and game companies (obviously) can't stop it.. Now, instead of someone else collecting the money, the game developers get it.
I don't do it myself, but really, this changes very little, other than where the money is going from what i can tell.
I think the point is being missed.
Of course people have been doing this from the first time they could do this. But there is a difference between people operating outside the game's rules and intentions and the game companies supplying the same services.
And that is what the players expect.
If players come into a game and power leveling and gold selling is not acceptable then those players who don't want this will be in a game that has a rule set they support and those players who purchase outside of what is acceptable are accessing benefits that they shouldn't be privy too.
If a game company sells items or levels or whatever then again, you are getting players who want this and those players who don't will find a game that has a rule set that they want.
One level is no big deal but it does start begging the question as to where it will stop. Most players who spend a lot of time in a particular game might not want the shift to purchasing things. I think this is acceptable. I also think it's acceptable for game companies to sell whatever they want. But it should be made clear that this is the type of game they are making. If they find they need to offer these types of services then it stands to reason that players who don't believe in rmt of any kind are going to be pissed.
I think it's more tha reasonable to assume that there are people who love rmt and there are peolpe who hate rmt in all its forms.
For the people who hate it the worry is that this is setting a nice precedent that might lead to greater rmt in more and more games. And if that happens then that will limit what they are willing to play.

If you are complacent now, it will be too late by the time your own personal line is crossed. Months ago people were screaming that no company would ever let you buy levels etc. But here we are.
"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb
LoL, paying to avoid PLAYING parts of the game..... Never understood the concept of paying someone to power level you, let alone skipping parts of the game.
Perhaps these people pay someone to play chess until onle the King & Queen are left...FOR THE WIN!
People paying for pwoer lvl arent skiping parts of game. If you have grind "rpgs" that you need 100k+ mobs kills per lvl(ragnarok and other typical korean things). Then they buy service so they can skip mobs that they are feed up to gain higher lvl area.
Bots,gold selling,power lvling = signs or bad design,grinder fillers

"It's only cosmetic, at least it doesn't give an advantage..."
"It's only one mount available at a lower level than otherwise possible, at least they're not selling levels..."
"It's only one level, at least they're not selling max level characters..."
"It's only max level characters, at least they're not sellling..."
I hate to say it, but it really is a slippery slope. When companies go down the RMT route, I've yet to see a single example of where it doesn't continue to get more invasive, even with people complaining. Granted, if enough people complain and/or leave, it does slow it down. That's why it's best to object to any and all RMT that appears, to prevent any of it from getting into the game.
So you can brand people as QQing now, but they're actually doing you a favor by helping to prevent or at least delay the RMT from getting to the point where it would start to piss you off.

If they are successful with this at all other studios are going to consider doing the exact same thing.

MMO fail of the year? Quite possibly.
Years ago people were screaming that no company would place a shop in a P2p mmorpg etc, but here we are.
How many people that scream and QQ in this thread play war? I'm very courious, maybe 10%?I'm sure less, people here are QQ only because they got nothing else to do
You put a fire out when it starts, not when half of your home is destroyed.
If they are successful with this at all other studios are going to consider doing the exact same thing.
