I'm neither for nor against GW2. It's just not on my horizon.
But as others have set, get a good input setup to cover the bad parts of any game's control system.
Personally, a Logitech 110 keyboard, with a G15 Keypad and <insert uber multi-button gaming mouse of your choice here> and I'm golden in any game.
Some people like the Razer Naga, but it's way too small for my hand. Was the same problem with the Logitech G9? Black.
I ended up getting (and this is funny because I don't play WoW) the Cataclysm mouse because I saw many complaints about it being *too big*. It's perfect for my hand.
A good setup, to me, is paramount to a good gaming experience.
To the OP.. hang in there! I'll do everything in my power to ensure this wrong is righted and justice is served.
But first if you'll excuse me, I have to go save a kid on a ledge because Pandas have appeared in his favorite game and this has developed into a deal breaker.
MMO games have been released with game-stopping bugs, limited to no guild support, broken PVP, and this is what the OP is worried about? This is an easy fix over time - stop the drama.
I don't know if I'm going to need to use shift, ctrl or alt for any of my binds with this game. It's not a flight sim so right now, I just don't see the need for that much depth. Either way, it *should* be an option for any PC game and I don't see a valid reason for why it isn't that way.
Regardless, this is far from a deal breaker for me. Until I play and see how many rebinds I'm actually going to need, I can't even call it an inconvenience.
"It's still in beta!", same thing the fanboi's said about swtor and its problems. This close to release the guy who wrote this code has been gone for 6 to 8 months. If they have someone working on it, he has spent a month trying to decipher the "Mayan" code left by the first guy.

Thats on you OP if you won't play for the mentioned reason. Yes it is picky, no I doubt they are going to drop everything and change it and yes I think you will still play GW2 when it releases.
Playing: GW2 Waiting on: TESO Next Flop: Planetside 2 Best MMO of all time: Asheron's Call - The first company to recreate AC will be the next greatest MMO.
The first deal breaker was discovered for me and I will not be playing GW2 unless it is fixed. Apparently you will be unable to use modifiers with keybinds. Which means no more Shift 1-5 or Ctrl 1-5.
I can not nor will I play a game that forces me to use 6,7,8,9,0,-,or = keys. Its unnatural and very bad. I was seriously hoping to change my keybinds to be able to play the way I want to play that felt most comfortable for me.
Call me picky but I think my post history will show ive been an avid GW2 fanboy but I will not play this game without being able to use modifier keys for keybinds. HUGE DEAL BREAKER FOR ME!
You're being picky. No actually scratch that. You're being utterly ridiculous. You're going to not play a game simply because the controls might be a bit different. It's your choice though of course

I'd love to play many of these Asain MMOs like Forsaken World or Battle of Immortals, but many of them do not provide any mouse support or Key Remapping. So I understand where he comes from.
I will not invest in a Naga again, too small, and a pain in the ass to get to work anyways.
Also Modifier Keys is a very convenient way some of us like to play.
Invest in a Naga. Never worry about keybinds again.
I bought a Naga but the feeling was atrocious and having to use your thumb as a ambidexterous digit was unnatural and felt foreign.
When I started using the Naga, I had my fingers too far forward and was clicking with my entire index / middle finger, which didn't leave much room for my thumb to move.
I backed up my hand though - now lining my fingers with the front edge of the mouse wheel - and I can hit the entire keypad easily.
In most games I use modifiers plus the mouse and I have everything I need for combat purposes. In GW2, the pad takes care of 10 skills plus two extra buttons (maybe bound to some class-specific abilities). I could bring the buttons down from F1 - F4 to the numbers on the keyboard (using the Naga's numpad setting for skills) or just use keys around WASD to handle it.

Never. Once you tried a trackball you can't go back to a mouse, at least not where PvP is involved. Mice are just too dang slow (and make your wrist hurt). Nothing improved me so much in PvP as getting that controller.
Now, if someone just could make a trackball with enough keys on for all the skills things would be peachy...
I used that mouse before (or another Logitech with a trackball). It's a nice mouse but I'd rather have the keys on the side of the mouse than the trackball, if I had to choose between the two. Maybe if you used a laptop more often, things like trackballs would feel better, but I don't even own one.
Plus, most MMO PVP is light on mouseplay and heavy on pressing keyboard buttons anyway, so the Naga gives you an advantage over any mouse without the pad.
I have been thinking about getting a Nostromo n52 pad but that would take even more time to get used to. Also remember that the Naga's keys are programmable in case you want macros.

These are potentially great solutions to the OP's issue. But keep in mind that mouse looks like it would be $75-$100 already added on to $60. That's a lot just to play a game.
To some, it's pocket change, to others, that might be too much.
LOL, Me, I went and built a whole new PC...twice. In anticipation of 2 particular games LOL.

Well, that is an EXTREMELY odd reason to go from fan to completely giving up on a game. It's honestly hard to tell if this is genuine or a troll attempt.
To each their own, I guess, but I can't wrap my head around this one. I mean, it'll take a few hours to get into the playstyle of the game at best.

The Naga is $70 and up, yes. The one in my pic is $50 for a wireless and $30 for a cable.
But you don't buy a mouse for a single game, it is something you use all the time no matter what you do on the computer so it isn't the best thing to save money on.
You need to find something that is comfortable and fast. And what works for one person might not be right for another, there have been other solutions in the thread to OPs problem (and ANET should still fix this in the client, it is a really minor thing that makes the experience better for some players).

How is it hard to understand that a person doesn't want to play something that will be uncomfortable for him as a player? Wouldn't that be the most important thing about any game? I know it is for me. Especially if it features competition against other players.

all my fellow coders out there know how drop dead easy it is to code up key rebinding functionality.
EVEN THE TINIEST 1 MAN INDIE GAMES have no good excuse for lacking proper keybinding!

Who was it that wrote the code handling keybinds?
Modifiers doesn't matter with so few skills. It's only the 5 rightmost buttons most people can't reach, you can probably rebind them to other buttons.

I use a Logitech MX518 mouse currently and have always used a long sleek mouse like this.
