The newest reviews I've seen for WoW are 2004, 2 years ago....WHEN THE GAME CAME OUT!! If those same sites were to review WoW now, as I've said I doubt they would score it the same.
When you go into a game store do you see WoW boxes on the shelves? How about EVE? How many WoW boxes are there? 5? 10? A whole rack in the middle of the floor? Thats advertising for the game right there.
CCP don't care if they have millions of subscribers and neither does the playerbase. IT DOESN'T MAKE THE GAME BETTER. They bring in enough money to make a profit, spend several million a year on server upgrades, triple their staff and aquire White Wolf games. I'd say that means they're doing pretty damn good. And they didn't have to create a bland, generic game to do it.
Nobody here is denying that EVE is a good game that is doing very well, that is not the issue here.
Indeed, you do still see WoW boxes on the shelves. That is because WoW is still selling a lot every day, and EVE stopped selling years ago, hence it was taken off the shelves. if EVE was selling better, it would still be on the shelves today.
I don't share your opinion that WoW would receive worse ratings, because WoW didn't change. it added extra content, but it didn't change much, hence the review would be exactly the same as before.
I'm also pretty sure CCP DOES care about the amount of subscribers, its why they made a product in the first time. Subscriber base DOES point out how many people enjoy the game, and thats what games are all about
EVE is not on store shelves because Simon & Schuster Interactive, the games original publisher closed down, after that CCP decided not to sign up with another publisher. I believe there was only about 100,000 or so boxed games ever made for EVE, of which a few thousand are still floating around. They have had the option to release a new boxes on shelves when they brought out a new expansion but they CHOSE not to. They have had buyout offers from all the major publishers (EA, Vivendi, Ubisoft, etc) but CHOSE not to sell out and lose control of their game.
WoW has added a bunch of 40 man raids to the game, something that is hated by all but about 15% of their playerbase, they've added PVP BG, another addition that is almost universally reviled by it's playerbase due to the rediculous grinds they require. Do you honestly think that a reviewer who had played the first 20-30 levels of the game is going to have the same opinion after hitting the endgame grind, or the PVP grind? I sure don't.
CCP always new they would never have a huge subscriber base, actually they are surprised it passed 100K and continues to grow so quickly. They set out to create a living breathing virtual universe where players could build their own empires. At that they've succeeded greatly.

Before S&S closed down Eve was either deassorted or discontinued by retailers due to poor sales.

Use some common sense if Eve was still selling and assorted at major retailers other publishers would be lining up to publish it for CCP and it would be in CCP's best interest to have it at retail.

We are all a part of the MMO community and should support each others games and keep any rivalry friendly. CCP are free to promote their game any way they wish on their own boards, and be given kudos for the development of their community...community is what MMO's are built on after all.
If 100-180k "fan's" can keep a multi-million seller like WoW from taking top spot - as it did last year - then dont come screaming here, go scream at Blizzard for failing to build any community spirit despite all the money they have raked in from subscribers all over the world.
For the record I am neither a WoW or EvE player but this thread has me this close ][ to adding my vote to EvE as game of the year.

I think its funny how you speak fondly of CCP ways to promote the game only to talk about keeping rivalry friendly. Asking your players to vote for a game on a website they normaly never visit and thus are not part of that community is NOT friendly rivalry. Sure CCP are free to promote their game, But this is about awards, prizes, Not advertisement. Sure it helps selling the games, but that is no reason to actually see it as promotion material when voting starts, After you won the awards fair (which CCP did/does not, they did the same trick last year), THEN you can add it to your website and be proud. Again, these are mmorpg.com's readers choice awards, not eve-online.com's. MY community, the mmorpg.com community, should pick which game to nominate. not EVE-online.com's community. thats my opinion.
Why should I go scream at blizzard for keeping the awards fair? There is no reason to do that.these are mmorpg.com's awards, not the awards of every mmorpg gamer in the universe. It also has nothing to do with community spirit, is has something to do with the company. Big diffrence.
If this thread actually brought you this close to adding your vote to EVE as game of the year, then maybe you should wonder and ask why your voting for EVE, because its really such a good game or because your angry you see people who don't like it CCP advertises their game at awards? I'll let you think about that one for a while.
People can't vote unless they are reg'd here. Once reg'd they are every part of this community as you or I.
When you get that, you may just get why your argument is a weak one.
Edit to comment on this point of your's -
I think its funny how you speak fondly of CCP ways to promote the game only to talk about keeping rivalry friendly.
Are you insinuating CCP are underhand in communicating with their playerbase? What the hell is wrong with asking their followers to support them on an MMO site? Really.
If WoW players are too lethargic to come vote for "their" game, you cant blame EvE dev's for it. What a joke!

"People can't vote unless they are reg'd here. Once reg'd they are every part of this community as you or I." And the ppl that register for a 2nd, 3rd, or 50th time are the part of the community that is like the crazy uncle that no one likes to talk about or admit relationship to. Unfortunately Eve has a lot of crazy uncles.
I fail to see how this is considered "cheating". What this proves is how passionate the players and CCP are about EVE. Yes I am a EVE fanboi, and I'm proud of it. ANY company can do this, it takes little effort. Just post it, ask players to vote. The End. But they don't, and they have no one to blame but themselves.
If EVE doesn't win, no big deal. Your bitching will just be all for nothing.
Originally posted by Gameloading I honnestly don't consider these awards fair untill every mmorpg community (Lineage 2, WoW, EQ2 etc etc) is informed of these ratings. If you ask the question: "Which is better, America or canada? vote now!" and you put a shitload of advertisements of the vote in america, and none in Canada, its not that hard to imagine who would win and have a greater show up. I don't blame mmorpg.com, so we have that clear.
CCP isn't to blame either. Why should it be there fault that other companies are to lazy to care bout what their fanbase wants?
You noticed that CCP has only advertised on THEIR website, on THEIR front page in THEIR community. Hate your MMO developer for not making the same effort, it would only take them 2 minutes of their expensive time. This whole arguement is retarded really.

Actually what ahppened was the origonal publisher went bust and eve almost died there i think. So what the devs did was get some finantial backing to publish it themselves. Thats why you rarly see copys for sale in stores. But you can still buy copys on the eve website and considering subscription numbers keep going up and player retention is 9 months long on average id say that eve has taken the right route.

Maybe you consider someone who registers here, makes zero posts, reads none of the news/reviews, and only intention is to vote for EVE, and then leaves to never return again to be part of the community, I certainly don't.
For the part after your edit, I think its better if you read my post(s) again.
Maybe this might be mmorpg.com's intention, I don't know and I have nothing to say about it, but I'm just expressing my opinion. but when EVE wins that reward, then notice it was not chosen by the mmorpg.com community and it was not based on quality.

How Game and others can assume that just because someone doesnt have a presence in these forums they dont use the site AT ALL is pretty hilarious...and more than a little disrespectful of the site as a whole which has far more to offer than reading the same old tired posts from a minority of members.
On another note, not only are CCP promoting their own game on their own site they are also promoting MMORPG.com, whose survival depends on its number of subscribed members NOT number of members who post.

You have obviously never met a forum lurker. Thats someone who rarly if at all posts in topics but rather prefers to read the forums and on site articles such as the review posts.
For example i temd to lurk on the eve website a lot yet ive only made a handfull of posts [less than 10 i belive].
The reality is Blizzard wants little to do with this site while this site is crucial to Eve's success. Don't believe me? Well besides the easy WOW doesn't advertise on here while Eve does, look at the "NEWS" section for both games. The only news for WOW is either editorials or updates the MMORPG.com staff ripped from the WOW homepage. The news for Eve contains exlusive screenshots & interviews with the CCP CEO. I am actually proud of Blizzard for not supporting a site that whores itself out to virtual goods sellers, and question just how good of a MMO reference site MMORPG.com is when the world's largest MMO thumbs their nose at it.

Maybe this might be mmorpg.com's intention, I don't know and I have nothing to say about it, but I'm just expressing my opinion. but when EVE wins that reward, then notice it was not chosen by the mmorpg.com community and it was not based on quality.
I tell you one thing eve did nothing for me and i did not like it at all.
