Are you insinuating CCP are underhand in communicating with their playerbase? What the hell is wrong with asking their followers to support them on an MMO site? Really. If WoW players are too lethargic to come vote for "their" game, you cant blame EvE dev's for it. What a joke!
Maybe you consider someone who registers here, makes zero posts, reads none of the news/reviews, and only intention is to vote for EVE, and then leaves to never return again to be part of the community, I certainly don't.
For the part after your edit, I think its better if you read my post(s) again.
Maybe this might be mmorpg.com's intention, I don't know and I have nothing to say about it, but I'm just expressing my opinion. but when EVE wins that reward, then notice it was not chosen by the mmorpg.com community and it was not based on quality.
You have obviously never met a forum lurker. Thats someone who rarly if at all posts in topics but rather prefers to read the forums and on site articles such as the review posts.
For example i temd to lurk on the eve website a lot yet ive only made a handfull of posts [less than 10 i belive].

Shame on you.
I agree that we are all part of the MMO community, and we should support each others games and keep any rivalries friendly. So then, why can't EVE's developers at CCP keep the rivalry friendly?
You can see clearly from the frontpage message that they have nothing but contempt for this "MMO community," of which we are all part. To prove this, let me again point your attention to the statement made:
21.11.2006 12:50:18 Reader's Choice voting underway at MMORPG.com
MMORPG.com has announced that voting has begun for the 2006 Player's Choice Awards. Thanks for our enthusiastic and supportive community, EVE Online kicked some serious award buttocks last year, winning four out of seven possible categories. Can we do it again? You bet your Leviathan we can, but only if you cast your vote now!
The statement begins by saying that the Reader's Choice voting is underway at MMORPG.com. This would imply that the voting was for the readers of MMORPG.com.
However, the statement then says that the awards are the Player's Choice Awards, implying that the awards have nothing to do with whether or not you read MMORPG.com, but rather, whoever can rally enough players to the voting.
Notice also that when they boast of how they "kicked some serious award buttocks last year," they do not thank the community of those who read MMORPG.com. Instead, they thank "our enthusiastic and supportive community," which is EVE's "enthusiastic and supportive community." If the term "our" has any other context, it looks even more condescending, as it would reply that MMORPG.com's community plays the role of huckleberry to Iceland.
More or less, that statement insulted everyone here who was not a part of their "enthusiastic and supportive" EVE community, yet voted for EVE anyway, based on the merits, and the merits alone. They are basically claiming that they owe no gratitude toward conscientious MMORPG readers who are not part of EVE Online, for any award they win or have won. They only owe gratitude to their "enthusiastic and supportive community," and disregards the fact that perhaps, just perhaps, EVE won because other gamers, from other communities outside of EVE, do not see the awards as a fanboi loyalty excercise.
They also insulted everyone who liked EVE, but felt that it was right to vote for a different game. Perhaps EVE had good graphics, but Silkroad had better graphics. Yet rather than actually say that the rewards had anything to do with graphics, gameplay, or PvP, stooped to thank only the "enthusiastic and supportive community," and basically admits that the rewards are a sham.
EVE's producers think the awards are a sham, because they make no claim that anything other than an "enthusiastic and supportive community" is of any importance. They do not say that the voting should be fair, nor do they say that EVE's community is capable of making up their own mind, and to be informed. In fact, they even say that if anyone in EVE's community doubts that EVE can win so many categories again, they "bet your Leviathan we can, but only if you cast your vote now!"
It is clear that they think the award is a sham, yet they spare no time at posting the awards on their banner ads. They portay the image that they respect us here, yet they give not one word of thanks to us when promoting their game.
When EVE's producers say that "our" community is "enthusiastic," they are saying that their community is willing to do whatever CCP tells them will help CCP. When EVE's producers say that "our" community is "supportive," it means that their subscribers will support EVE, regardless on whether or not they really should.
When EVE's producers talked about community KariTR, it is clear to everyone that they do not believe that "we are all part of the MMO community and should support each others games and keep any rivalry friendly." If they did, they'd be more tactful, rather than boasting like they do, and couching their rhetoric in terms like "world domination," and, "kicking butt."
They take these contests so seriously because they hate other games, and other gamers, from other communities. They boast, even when nobody outside of Iceland believes their accomplishments are worth boasting about. They criticize their competition, poke fun at gaming models that differ from their own, and show contempt for their peers in the gaming industry. They need to win awards, because if they cannot, then they would be laughing stocks.
Here is the difference though. CCP and EVE really doesn't care how they win awards, but only that they win awards. They really do not care whether or not they have the best PvP, but only that they win the award for best PvP. They do not care whether or not they are the "game of the year," but only that they win the award as the game of the year, and keep on winning it, whether they are indeed worthy of the title, or not.
The producers, EVE fans, and those hoping to become more closely related with CCP as ISD members. They actively monitor this site, and take measures to manipulate the perception here. Look at this blog from 2004:
We like how they categorize the rating and of course we agree with 10.0 for Graphics but would you really rate EVE as 6.9 for fun?
That blog contained a link directly to this site's member review page. It goes without saying that "CCP are free to promote their game any way they wish on their own boards," but the way they choose to promote their game on their own boards is for the purpose of deception, and of manufacturing a consent that is not there. They develop "their community," and you are correct KariTR that this sort of thing "is what MMO's are built on."
D&L's community was built that way by Farlan. SWG's community was built that way by Sony. Same with Horizons, and Mourning. In all of these cases, the game developers were able to manipulate the media sources through the use of public relations. It is because we are asked to take a leap of faith when subscribing to an MMO, as the fees are non-refundable, the length of operation is undefinable, and the things we pay for are intangable, and no guarantee of a fun experience.
The only reason CCP is doing all of this on their website is because they can win. What if someday Blizzard decides to do what CCP is doing, and rallying their fans en masse to manipulate events here? I know how CCP would react. They'd pull up all their ads here, talk to the other sites how all of this is a hoax, and say what pathetic and immature gamers we are, and how wedded we are to the big MMO establishment.
And why? Because CCP doesn't care about making EVE a great game. They only care about having EVE be called a great game by others, out of petty jealousy.
That is why this thread is so long, and why this is important.

I have to agree partly on this. Tho in the end such sites like this need money if only to hire out server space and bandwidth.
Ah now I understand what CCP did wrong, they did not have their PR people look over every single post the devs made to make sure there isn't a single work in them that can be intentional misinterpreted by conspiracy theorists like beatnik.
I agree CCP is a real bad company because it lets it employees post freely on the forum. I am going to contact them immediately and order them not to do it again or I will cancel my account...

The devs have NEVER told people to come here and hype the games rating on this site. This BS has been said before and proven many times to be false. Unless you have some mysterious links that no-one else has found yet.

In other words, Proof or STFU.
They may not have asked them to hype the game's ratings but they are begging people to vote for Eve.
Good read beatnik59. Personally I dont think the term "ass-kicking" is unfriendly at all, infact its highly appropriate friendly language for a PvP themed game.
As for unprincipled advertising - though I think most of us know that advertising isnt the most integral of businesses - I feel it unfair to lump CCP in with game companies that knowingly lie to their customer's. Or to think that a company that allows it's playerbase to be ridiculed as no-lifer's on a SP episode somehow has more integrity than CCP.....simply mind-boggling.
Voting is nothing more than a popularity contest, get over it.
BTW EVE cures cancer! Vote for EVE!

A conspiracy is an attempt to manipulate things in secrecy.
However, this is no conspiracy, because they admit what they are doing here, and its plain for all to see.

You can see clearly from the frontpage message that they have nothing but contempt for this "MMO community," of which we are all part. To prove this, let me again point your attention to the statement made:
21.11.2006 12:50:18
Reader's Choice voting underway at MMORPG.com
WoW talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.
Are you saying MMORPG.com it's ok that MMORPG.com has sold out to another virtual seller as long as it's not IGE? Because taking money for advertising is a form of selling out...
"Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason."
To any gold selliing companies.
He was being sarcastic.
I cant bealeave how desperate EVE are to make a stickey on their forums for people to come and vote here!

Man its childish pathetic and ruins the whole awards! because of this i wont be takeing these awards siriously ! And i surpose alot of outher people will feel the same because EVe are getting the unfair advantage of advertiseing the awards on their sites! And to be honest iv had it with this site EVE absoulutly sucks ! Millions of people hate it yet it still stays the top guild wars has taken over it a couple of times for about a day the the DEvs at ccp just beg people on their forums to go and save them and get them back top ! i will never take this rateing ladder siriously if eve are gonna stay top! EVE fanbois u got to hate them!

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience"

I heard Linden Research Inc. is buying C.C.P.
EVE has not won yet and already the whiners are crying that its not fair they dont have an "I WIN" button for rtheir game. It amazes me that the only MMORPG that has increased subscriptions year after year, while all the FOTM games do not increase players a year after release.
A conspiracy is an attempt to manipulate things in secrecy.
However, this is no conspiracy, because they admit what they are doing here, and its plain for all to see.
