In september 2004, Blizzard had 12 million active users. So your assuming that the vast majority of players are ex-battle.net players, who were always used to play games online for free. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how many people are still against a monthly fee. Also, Blizzard's Battle.net was mainly popular in the west and in Korea, but not as big in china. yet the subscriber base of WoW in China is in the millions. Ofcourse the quality has something to do with it, people don't play games if they don't enjoy them.
Wait a minute? 4 million subs quit the game? xD That's like a third of the complete playerbase... If that is true (which I strongly doubt) it only sounds like people simply doesn't enjoy WoW for a very long period of time.
Anyway I bet everything I own that many WoW players only plays it because they feel there's nothing else to play. They still wish there was something better but WoW is the vanilla flavor of ice-cream and heck, it always works.

Reaching deep into my boxer shorts to extract my guess I see the following numbers at end of the year Warcraft- still the 800 lb gorilla AoC- 400- 500K maybe more cause of the console pulls LoTRO- 300K - 400 K WAR - Same as LoTRO maybe a little less since LoTRO will pull some non MMO players due to it's license and accesibility ( newb friendly) All SOE games combined- 250K various indies such as TCoS, PoBS, etc all combined 200K

That would be Scions of Fate, aka Yulgang online. to get that subject out of this world, its a free to play game that counts accounts created. Blizzard counts active accounts, aka people still playing the game.

I do not think that half of those 8.5 mil players think WoW is the greatest game, it is just that at the moment nothing else is out there and when other games come along, starting with LOTRO, WoW will lose more and more players.

All my friends in college are cancelling their WoW subscriptions. I already did maybe... 9 months? after release, and I bought the damn collector's edition, feh. The game was that cool in the beginning. And then... level 60... one of the first dozen or so 60s and I think 1st level 60 tauren warrior on Earthen Ring, or at least the second. Maybe 5% of that server showed any attempt to roleplay, and this is a roleplay server... The honor system finally cinched it. I've never felt so much disgust for a fellow player before. You don't know what it feels like to be farmed until you play a 3:1 A:H ratio server. I want to bitch slap anyone that wears alliance T-shirts SO bad (well, I do for anyone who wears WoW stuff, but alliance especially, my GOD! Some fucking respect, please, from more than as much as half of you would be impressive? Is that so hard? Cripes, they'd start something IC then whine OOC cuz WE would "zerg" them! Ok, I'll stop ranting... feh)
I so love that WoW is going to be dying out into a group of fan boys. Blizzard fucked over a wonderful thing by making "EverQuest version 2.0 w/ PvP". So much story, so much lore, such a beautiful and incredible universe, ruined... The best we can hope for is a complete game overhaul. Maybe more than .01% of the game can be enjoyed by not constantly grinding, and I soooo include PVP into that grind.

I think LoTRO will pull a fair share simply because of the number of people I know that have 4 or 5 level 60's and are not into raids that are just ready for soething different. LoTRO is polished,easy to learn and has PvP lite with it's MvP system. Thos alone will guaranteee a lot of box sales the only question is can Turbine keep the content coming
A new xpac according to blizzard will be released every year so a new xpac would be released the same time war comes out.
lol...It took them over TWO years to put out BC think about that if you think they will put a expansion out once a year your lying to yourself.To put it into perspective look at it this way..Eq2 came out roughly 2 weeks before WoW hit retail in that time SOE has released THREE Expansion and THREE adv packs not to mention the often content updates that are free to everyone that always adds more than anything blizz patches in.
