Okay folks, time to see whats wrong with AoC THIS week.... Yet another doomsday thread. Oh my God! Oh my God! Combat looks half assed in videos. I mean, really, look the spear isnt hitting the neck its hitting the entire body! I agree that the swings dont look like theyre making any real contact. Hey guys, guess what? Developers cant make precise combat like that cause it will further LAG THE GAME. MMO players are like spoiled children. They want everything, mine mine everything or nothing!
Its been mentioned time after time in this thread that AoC looks really promising on alot of areas, actually everything but the physic engine looks pretty darn awesome.

Are you sure that incorporating a better physics would cause the game to lag? Or is it just a hunch? If it does cause more lag then slow the combat down. Add less but stronger mobs. And i dont think the "hiiting holes in the air" issue is because the mobs dont registrer that they are beeing hit; they just dont react to it other then spray out some blood. Remove the blood and add some small anmations instead. If the mobs trembles and fall abit backwards when they are hitted the fights would get a much more satisfying feel imo.
They are still in the early beta stage so cut them some slack. Its your own fault if you think that beta footage is the final product.

It means a lot of people want to see the game succeed and actively point out areas that can be improved. Because lets face it, the best time for a game to make changes and improvements is pre-release.
Big problem with that is most people don't have any hands-on time with the game to base their opinions/concerns on, and posters who always defend the game keep saying, "wait until you play it before you whine."
But If a game releases without being a solid and polished experience, the game is screwed (VSoH anyone)
I say let everyone sip some hatorade. Why? Not because we hate AoC, but because *most* of us want the game to be great (and successful), and the best way to do that now is by pointing out areas of concern within the little scraps of information we're given.

Am I sure? You dont need to be a programmer to know the answer to that question. Lets put it this way: Funcom wants to have a high end graphical game with real time combat with huge battles. Imagine having everyone in those battles have physics incorporated into them. Do you know how much information will be sending? It will make the server crash! By the way, from my judgement, the mobs do react to the hits, just not as profound as you would like them to be.
Yeah, what youre talking about is borderline Oblivion graphics right there and it just isnt gonna happen. Wait another 10 years when the technology increases.
Yes and I agree that people voice their opinions about a game but the number of topics spewing negativity in AoC is just ridiculous. Way too many assumptions and way too many worry warts. Enough is enough. And unfortunately, the game is 3 months from release so we wont see any major changes anyway. We may see some tweaking which is what Im hoping for. Maybe a little more accentuated hit reactions, but dont expect anything Oblivion-esque. Topics like these are useless at this point. Sorry to break it to ya
1) If at release few graphical glitches are the worst thing I have to face I'll consider myself lucky.
2)The combat wont be anything grounbreaking but not downright awful, you'll click buttons 123qe to target your swings and some hotkeys to add abilities/combos to the mix...All previewers has said it's hard at first but gros on to you.
3) Reason the combat looks slower than in other games is that there is no auto-attack and weapon, stats and connection actually affect swing speed...you can't expect a warrior wielding polearm to swing it 30000 strikes a second.
4)In most cases lag in vids happens because the "server" software the game is demoed from is on some developers computer rather than full fledged server machine.

If they sacrifice some very important part of the combat system (remember this is what you are going to do 90% of the time, fight 2-3 mobs at the time) to get humongous battles and 30k poly figures with highres maps, then honestly; does it really have top be a trait? Cant u just make the battles like 20 vs 20 instead of 40 vs 40 for eample? Whats the fun in participating in large scale battles if what you contribute with feels fake and akward? I say give me 20 opponents who react to what i throw at them instead of 40 whos, seemingly, not even notices me slashing them with a 2hander except spraying some red color my way....
It simply must be possible.
Actually i do think the game looks on par with Oblivion atm, but i dont really need it to be exactly this smooth. I just want the thing, which i will do the most, to feel cool and satisfying. If its a lost cause so be it; but if theres a genius nerd somewhere at Funcom who say " What the hell, lets give a try" and spends a week or two testing a better physics, then all the whining would be 110% worth it...
On the other hand. We can allso just fall back and say; well AoC wont be more then average when it comes to the battles. If you want challenging fights( again, you are doing this ALL the time) go look elsewhere....but i would say; what a freaking shame....!

You call physics a "very important part of the combat system?" LOL!
Fancy physics is something thats added on last to a game. Id rather have a clean cut real time combat system with minimal physics than something of what youre talking about. I dont know what youre talking about in the battles, I think I feel like I am contributing when my opponent dies at my feet when I layed off a sweet combo. I think youre opponent is going to notice you swinging an axe their way regardless if theyre character reacts properly or not.
Yes, we all want it cool and satisfying. I want an MMO with huge battles awsome graphics and physics etc etc but you know what? MMO's have been out for how long? almost 10 years? Thats nothing. MMO's are top of the line technology wise and we wont see anything that advanced of what youre talking about until the hardware catches up. It just isnt possible right now.
Umm and yeah youre last statement is totally wrong. Challenging fights! LOL. AoC's combat system is going to be much more complicated than your standard auto attack. Nothing is more easier than auto attack. Nothing.
I still think anyone looking at the videos without rose colored fanboy glasses on should be questioning allot of the hype about this game. It may yet be a great MMO - I hope it is. But it certainly hasn't shown itself to be anything that next gen or groundbreaking in terms of combat and if the flaws I mentioned make it to live the real time combat system is going to have major issues.
I'm with the idea of delaying AoC for a few months to work out the combat system properly. At the moment it honestly looks really...clunky. Then again we havent seen a 10 hit combo with skills incorporated (read on the official site that assassins for one have one of those attacks) yet...hmm I'de like some movies with more combat stuff in it, instead of the extremely...again clunky looking sword/stick fights.

Let me rephrase; Physics are the most important part of the combat system; no physics=no combat. Bad coded Physics = bad combat gameplay. Try fiddle abit with 3dsmax and check out how objects align to each others without any physics added; they dont.
And yes, i would be satisfied if they add some fancy physics before release. It could be in the form of small scripted animations. I dont want Aoc to be 10 neither 15 years ahead of the time i just want the thing i will do the absolutely most ; battle mobs, to feel satisfying.
As for my last sentence; read it again:) You would se that i dont whish ppl to play other games; i want the community to point out if they dont like part of a along waited game. I think everything in AoC but the combat looks real cool; the combat however have imo a very "wrong" look, it does look fake. And if the intention is to rework the system abit before release im happy. If not, i just say; " plz consider it...
There is no way the combat system could be considered next gen. Different from the standard mmorpg yes, but next gen?
We have already seen essentially the exact same system, only on a smaller scale, in dungeons and dragons online. To hit enemies with melee you have to run up to them, click to swing your weapon, and if they are in the area in front of you, it hits. AoC just took that idea and fleshed it out by making several attack keys instead of 1, and made combos out of the order you press them.
But the quote unquote 'real time fighting'? Opponents getting hit depending on where they are standing and where you swing? Already been done folks.
Hype is way too abused in this game, by both the fans and the devs. People paint a hyped up picture in their minds about how everything will play out, that it will be new fun and exciting and that they will never get tired of it. But most of that feeling comes more from their fantasies about how the best combat will be, about how it should be, or how they want it to be, and not from direct experience or from watching the vids. Which is really what hype is I guess. But thats probably just what funcom wants, they want people to buy the game based on their fantasy, because it will give them more sales. And thats why I think they are so picky about releasing footage. Because it leaves more to the imagination, and imagination + hype = $$$
I didn't say the game sux, I said it looks typical of other MMOs and I see allot of problems with the things I pointed out. IN fact, I find it hard to see how anyone can watch those videos and see anything that looks like what they say the game is - yes graphics are nice but I am talking about the combat mechanics and so far what has been shown looks nothing more advanced or better than anything I have seen in MMOs allready with poorly synced animations, out of position hits and such, and really cheesy blood effects.
Wasn't referring to you, look back at some of the other posts, it's them I'm "attacking".
While you don't think it's advanced, it is. There isn't any other fantasy mmo with that degree of real time combat. But also, look at videos of other games with auto attack... they rarely connect and it's often disguised with some giant glow effect. Also IMO, from judging the E3 stage demo, it looks pretty good. At least from something you would expect from a real time combat MMO... Unless you have unrealistic expectations of course.
Whatever guys - but i will say this, if indeed the combat model is fighting games (such as mortal Combat) as the DEVs has said so many times it will be a disaster if the issues that are plentiful in the videos exist when the game goes live. You cannot have real time combat when the animations are so poorly synced. And despite being BETA it is what, 60 or so days from release - that is fine tuning time not major revision time and what I saw suggests major revisions.adjustments are needed.

Of course no physics equals no combat. However you were referencing to such advanced coding in a game beyond the basic physics. Since it seems you have played around with 3dsmax and have some computing background you should know that such coding is quite complicated in advanced physics and cant be in an MMO. It is simply too much information for modern computers to handle, period.
You havent really specified what you want; at first you want some real advanced animations and now you seem to want small changes. I am all for tweaks, but if youre asking for anything more youre going to be sorely dissapointed. AoC will be in a more polished state than what its already in - usually games this far in beta dont have any major changes. But hey, we may see what youre hoping for.

Idealy i want mobs/players to react every time they get slashed/hammered with a weapon with a small animation. Just a "tremble", small step backward or something like that. I belive that would add alot of life. If its impossible due to latency maybe it could be saved with some effects. The blood dont cut it. Think about it; you make a perfectly timed attack, jumping in close to a mob and cut it exactly in its vital organs. But you will never experience that you succeded. Because nothing told you that u actually didnt miss the swing completely; except maybe that the mob fall faster...but hey, its mmoprg -it could just as easyli have been the other dude swinging his sword who was the pro...
The game will offcourse be very playable without suchs animations. I just think adding more life to the combat would make a helloffa difference....

Directional fighting system looks good and will help stop afk syndrom in big boss fights that we have seen in so many games since there is no permatargeting and autoatack ,so i am sure this going to be interesting battles both in pve and pvp (that also makes more difficult farmers that are botting).
But we must not have lag issues with that system and i totaly agree that blood effect must remain for both gore reasons and so you can be sure that you hit .
Air swing that we have seen in some video must be effect from unexperienced player so they better put some good players in their next video especially in pvp so we can judge correctly .I have some worries about gameplay (it might end up boring hiting 5 keys from 1-80 although optical result might be awsome).
All combat vids I have seen look clumsy, you face an enemy and start a slowwwww 5 swing combo, enemy dies after 2 swings yet your toon keeps swinging away.. very clumsy and looks stupid. AoC is one the games that look good on paper but as a game.. nah it don't work. With the release a few months away it makes we worry why they are not hamming the world of MMO with videos, beta keys and information... do I smell a "got potential, give it some time" vanguard release?
....... you can stop the animation at any given time... Not FC problems that the "reporters" dont do that..
But on the othere hand, do you realy care at all I smell another wartroll

so when u get lag u die just like every other mmo? so we are back to UO style who ever has better pings wins?

But it certainly hasn't shown itself to be anything that next gen or groundbreaking in terms of combat and if the flaws I mentioned make it to live the real time combat system is going to have major issues.

I'm with the idea of delaying AoC for a few months to work out the combat system properly. At the moment it honestly looks really...clunky. Then again we havent seen a 10 hit combo with skills incorporated (read on the official site that assassins for one have one of those attacks) yet...hmm I'de like some movies with more combat stuff in it, instead of the extremely...again clunky looking sword/stick fights.
I'm interested in spellweaving tho.
Disagreeing with the video evidence is what makes a fanboy. it is pretty clear that the new combat system has some issues by even the latest videos.

Air swing that we have seen in some video must be effect from unexperienced player so they better put some good players in their next video especially in pvp so we can judge correctly .I have some worries about gameplay (it might end up boring hiting 5 keys from 1-80 although optical result might be awsome).
....... you can stop the animation at any given time... Not FC problems that the "reporters" dont do that..
But on the othere hand, do you realy care at all I smell another wartroll
