Ok... well I can assure you that I DID propose new schemes for questing and char development, so i'm not one of those who complain and stop. Truth is We still have to see if they "activate" the outposts war... they added these quests with defence and attack tokens of LZ outpost but it's not yet active.... if that turned out good, and i mean long sieges, strategical exciting struggles, game might do the miracle.
Lets just hope that in the end we all want the same thing and that is to have fun with a game.
Well personally i wanna feel thrilled and excited and try new gaming experiences, interesting socially, psychologically and philosophically.
I leave fun when i'm watching tv, actoin movies at the cinema, or drinking beers with my buds.
I play games like i read books, so i take 'em as cultural entertainment.
Wel for me fun is what you decribe of wanting the thrill and excitement of a game experiance. But wanting them and getting them is 2 major difference's. Overall i think you are really misunderstanding me as obviously we DO want the same thing, you call it cultural entertainment, i simply call it fun, each his own but still the same thing for me atleast.
Fun has again soo many lvl's.
But one thing is for sure i myself do not consider books to have the same value as a game, books stand on a much higher lvl, that is if you really mean books to read and not some comics. If you play games compared to comics i can understand. But hey remember i don't have to understand each his own.
No i don't mean comics, i mean novels and romances, for example.
Good games like Bioshock, like ultima7, like planescape Torment, Fallout and even Max Payne can be as culturally and intellectually deep as, i dunno, Pride & Prejudice and Hamlet.

Dude...you dissing the comics? Are you implying comics are not a form of entertainment on a level with a novel? Because there are some pictures and some words?
Need we state several writers for comics...including Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly), Kevin Smith (Dogma, Clerks...MANY more), J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, author of three horror novels)....and many more...
Orson Scott Card, Brad Meltzer, Deepak Chopra who now have a line of comics or are writing a series...
But, we shall overlook your inadequacy with the fact you cannot find the finer art of the "comic book"...I think you better go take a visit to a comic shop now, and see the many comics from famous authors...then you may come on back and take the ludicrous statement you have made and revise as such....
Cheers!
(PS: As to Tabula Rasa...all i can say is... ........

I think comparing even those games to Shakespeare might be pushing it just a tad.

Heh you're right.. Shakespeare comparison is a wee too exaggerated... Videogames aren't ready for that level.. but one day they will be.
Videogames got past their classic age like literature did as it went thru roman times. Then came the dark ages, from 98 to 2003 or around those years anyway, years of terrible emptiness and barbarism.. Now we're in middle ages, slowly re-discovering that games can have great stories and teach something.
We're still far from Renaissance times, but games like Bioshock clearly show that today videogames are intellectually valid, and not just pastime for kids.
And o'course comics can be too.
Why give a limit to men's capability to express themselves, only because we have low consideration of that means ? No means of human expression has boundaries, it's people who make them up for them, like they did in the beginning for cinema, i'm sure, and like some still do for comics. But why shouldn't such instrument be able to express the HIGHEST levels of art and culture ?

Personally, I think we're still in the dark ages. We need another step forward in immersiveness (yes, I know it's not a word, but I can't think of anything else), either technologically or emotionally, before we move onto the next level. We're right there, but we just need to leap over a moderately large gap before reaching the light.
We're still taking steps, but something is going to have to come along and really change the way we treat games as a whole before we can call it the middle ages just yet.
What level did half of you get to draw your conclusion , did you reach end game ? Screen shots of you levels would be helpful .
Most people who don't like a game won't get past the first 10 levels. When I played WoW, I was so bored with it I stopped playing at level 8. Never looked back either. Personally if I didn't like the game I wouldn't keep playing. You can't tell people, "Man once you get to lvl 40 this game is SO much FUN" because noone would play a game that's only fun after level 40. That means you waste a month and a half of time and money before you have any fun in a game, and that isn't even guaranteed.
If it's not fun out of the box it isn't worth it. I think this game is fun out of the box, now once I hit max level.... eh... that's another story.
It's sad but true. I am 100% going to play TR on release. But a "hook" is really missing for this game and the tutorial lends the game to seem linear and easy. And looking back I was glad the tutorial was that easy. When I was figuring out the commands and what was what I would've ate #$%^ and died surrounded by 10 Bane. It's a lose/lose situation. Either they keep the tutorial easy and won't have a "hook" or they make it tough with the "hook" and get players dying in the tutorial and discouraging them from playing.

You're probably right. Still too few believe that videogames can express human feelings as well as books and movies do.
But something is definitely moving.
But for now the Rowling lady writes his new Harry Potter's episode and cinema gives us the complete conversion.... videogames instead don't follow the tale faithfully, Harry Potter games indulge on action too much and leaves out the psychological and moral finesse the other two medias have.
Why? Possibly because of the common idea of videogames as low entertainment playstation helped create. They need some good help to get past this old idea.

The last patch bumped the dificulty level across the board to the point where I almost died several times in bootcamp. Certainly not good concidering I've been through it a few dozen times and knew exactly what to expect.
If the devs are smart (chuckle), they'll at least tone the difficulty for bootcamp down a good chunk.
Nothing says 'YES! I LOVE THIS GAME!' like having your ass handed to you on a platter in the tutorial section.
The first time I went through the "new and improved(tm) bootcamp", all I could hear were people going 'f**k this shit, I'm going back to %RANDOM_MMO_HERE%"
I read through about 10 pages of this drivel and you guys are so funny. As I previously stated I will definately be buying this game on release (probably preorder for the 3 days prior). But I made a list of reasons why I personally think TR IS INNOVATIVE and is going IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION for games. RG did not follow through on all my expectations and from the man who designed UO not having open PvP was mind-boggling.
1. Run over it to loot! Someone had mentioned this before. What an amazing concept, in an action packed MMO having the time to target a corpse and loot it just does not fit. I wouldn't be suprised to see more MMO's (namely asian MMO's who already have auto-loot buttons) looking at this idea.
2. Your weapon matters. Fighting machines with a sonic rifle? Guess what they are immune. Trying to take down that giant mech with your melee? Guess what it's not going to work. You cast a poison on a machine or on creatures who are natively poisonous? Nope immune.
3. What your doing matters. Crouching = +20% dmg? (not sure on percent), running increases dodge, height advantage and cover reducing damage. People say "Hey thats done in FPS, nothing new." and the next person says "This has nothing FPS related". Make up your mind...
4. Innovative approach to spawns. I understand this is purely cosmetic, but its been said that to show the strings of a game breaks immersion. And spawning is one of those strings. When a team of 5 Bane get beamed down behind me I don't think "Oh hey, respawns" I think "Crap an ambush".
5. Diversity of weapons. Yea WoW has maces, swords and axes all in 1h and 2h versions but does it really matter? I guess this could be grouped in with #2. But what ever happened to things like blunt weapons doing more dmg to undead and piercing not affecting skeletons etc. Nice to see this coming back.
6. Great graphics with little lag. You don't need Vangaurd quality realism to enjoy scenery, actually I thought Vanguard's graphics were pretty un-impressive (except the night sky). WoW did this beautifully and TR is probably 2nd on the list of games that really hit the nail on the head.
7. Trash talking. Thats right. I heard an NPC machine gunner spurt out "TASTE THE RAINBOW BITCH!" as he was mowing down Bane. WAIT WHAT!?!? Did that NPC just spew out obsenities at the other NPCs? I must be dreaming. Also talking with NPCs they swear all the time too, although most of that is filtered.
8. Voice overs. OMG THIS IS AMAZING. I'm the player who barely reads the quest text and runs around accepting as many as possible. But just one line from the NPC saying "Where is my ammo shipment? I need you to go check it out." I learned the story of the quest WITHOUT READING A DAMN WORD!!! And they ONLY talk that one line they don't spew out the entire quest text, just the story-line information. What an amazing concept.
9. Comedy. It's good to see a game embracing some comedy. I was standing around in town and a PA came on announcing that the "Back 40" was not to be used as a golf course and is actually a mine field. lol. Or not to use the wormhole to dump trash as the people on the other side were complaining. Haha, gotta love it.
10. Cinematics. Not since FFXI have I seen Cinematics implemented well in an MMO. They give a great background of the area you are about to enter. I fear a lot of people just skip these though.
Here are some things that you guys mentioned that I LOL'd about.
1. In-game ads. I saw a Dell XP Laptop on a table ingame. It does not say Dell XP whatever unless you mouse over it... I actually laughed a little.
2. Weak story. huh? from playing games like WoW, EQ2, EQ, Vanguard etc. where... I'm pretty sure 90% of the people don't even know a story even exists TR has a much better grasp on this and does a much better job feeding the story to you bit by bit.
3. Crappy character customization. I cannot believe people would complain about this. The ONLY customization I have seen better is CoH and Perfect World. Which makes it ranked at oh #3 worldwide... I do find it odd that gear overwrites your choices for armor, but I feel its necessary to have armor change your appearance. I feel unique enough. But its just funny for a game where 95% of the time your staring at the back of your characters head you guys would care so much...
My only real agreement with what is said by the nay-sayers here is that the instances are too easy. I would rather see an elite system like WoW has that makes 75% of the mobs in instances almost impossible to kill solo.

Hey i've been keeping small tabs on this game for at least a year now i got accpeted into the beta but I was in Kuwait...dam army lol anyways ive been rifling through these forums trying to find decent reviews...but from what most people are saying is that it isnt worth playing, but im still going give it a shot when i go on leave on the 28th...hopefully the retail is out...

If you read what you wrote you'll discover that it's a whole load of manure that makes no sense.
Comedy, voice overs, cinematics, trash talk.... for god's sake you just wanted to fill 10 things so that you could show how clever you are but c'mon, people, let's show a bit of dignity here
My feelings on this game is the same I had after playing Lord of the Rings Online. Its not as bad as all the "haters" claim but its not nearly as good as the "fanbois" will tell you. Its not a game for me but I can see how others can enjoy it.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

Dignity? Your the one who mentioned cow feces.

Yes but you're the one who's got brown fingers for typing it.
You actually wrote "voice overs"... the npcs actually speak the first lines of text of the (same old boring concept of) quests, to help lazy guys who find using ears to be less tiresome than using eyes. And concluded what an AMAZING concept !!
That's seriously hilarious.
And is running over corpses to loot REALLY going to transform the game into a sounding success? is it a good reason to buy and play the game? and ARE YOU sure it's innovative?
And what about different weapons for different enemies ? You declared it's innovative, right ? Now If one declares something to be innovative one would assume the guy has seen pretty much everything... You did?
Does Planetside ring a bell? The game has the concept of a type of ammo for a type of foe. A weapon can be loaded with several types of ammo, according to who you want to shoot.
The question of re-spawning is a bit more delicate. As of now re-spawning makes no sense, foe keeps on spawning over and over and over without a reason... the fact that a ship unloads 'em is nothing but a pretty ruse to excuse it, but nothing changes gameplay-wise for now. Maybe in the next patches bane will actually start making any sense in their assaults and re-spawns will have criteria. For now they just don't.
But even if it works, is it really a reason to buy this game ?
Lastly crouching. Crouching happens in every FPS and it's realistic. In here you don't crouch to avoid being hit but to dampen damage you get... at heart it's a different concept and it could lead to interesting tactics... for now they don't.
So in the end among 10 PRO aspects of the game you claimed only 1 and a half make any sense, even small.
Now, problem around here and every other TR forum especially the official boards is that nobody's impartial ! Both fanboys and hateboys follow the principle they assigned themselves, of either demolishing the game or defending it, plunging into this purpose headlong.
Let's just be objective, please, if anyone would first state their personal experience in gaming before doing insane declarations of "innovation" and revolutionary when He has no idea what Ultima and Fallout are, there wouldn't be this much mess, where any noob's opinion counts as much as an experienced player.
1. Run over it to loot! Someone had mentioned this before. What an amazing concept, in an action packed MMO having the time to target a corpse and loot it just does not fit. I wouldn't be suprised to see more MMO's (namely asian MMO's who already have auto-loot buttons) looking at this idea.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
2. Your weapon matters. Fighting machines with a sonic rifle? Guess what they are immune. Trying to take down that giant mech with your melee? Guess what it's not going to work. You cast a poison on a machine or on creatures who are natively poisonous? Nope immune.

All FPS games have crouching.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
4. Innovative approach to spawns. I understand this is purely cosmetic, but its been said that to show the strings of a game breaks immersion. And spawning is one of those strings. When a team of 5 Bane get beamed down behind me I don't think "Oh hey, respawns" I think "Crap an ambush".
If you stand in the same place they just keep falling out of the sky, hardly an "ambush".
Same ol' static spawns, only difference is they fall out of the sky.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
Many games have damage types. Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
6. Great graphics with little lag. You don't need Vangaurd quality realism to enjoy scenery, actually I thought Vanguard's graphics were pretty un-impressive (except the night sky). WoW did this beautifully and TR is probably 2nd on the list of games that really hit the nail on the head.
TR is pretty plain, and even on ultra high it still looks like a prettied up version of the Auto Assault engine.
And I am still of the opinion that they purchased the AA engine when their first game crapped out.
It would easily explain how so many features from AA made it into TR.
The XP bonus even used the same font as the one in AA.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
It was cute the first couple times I heard it, but I have heard NPCs talk in lots of games over the years so it doesn't make me too excited..
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
This statement is gushing so hard it is embarrassing me to read it.
The voice overs are very amateur and the devs admitted that the voices were done BY PEOPLE WORKING IN THE OFFICE. (because they do not have money left for professionals)
And that is exactly what they sound like, amateurs.
I would have been so embarrassed to put some of those utterly pathetic voices into my product.
Couldn't they do several takes so they had several inflections to choose from ?
Very amateur and poorly directed.
As one fella said on the beta boards: "Sounds like they hired the local high school drama class to do the voice acting".
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
9. Comedy. It's good to see a game embracing some comedy. It was cute for a minute, but that is all it was.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.

Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.

If you like nonsense stories, this one is for you.
Let's see, an alien race devastates the Earth but for some reason they let us line up and run through a portal to another planet.
Then, once we get to another planet, the aliens become so ridiculously predictable that even a band of disorganized people are able to significantly impact their war machine.
Yeah, it's got a great story... If you are about 9 years old.
3. Crappy character customization. I cannot believe people would complain about this. The ONLY customization I have seen better is CoH and Perfect World. Which makes it ranked at oh #3 worldwide... Very weak, player models are flat out ugly.
Yes, you look at the back of your own head 90% of the time but you look at the other players when you interact with them and they look like crap.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
Might make an okay console game but it is a lousy PC MMORPG.
6. Great graphics with little lag = not exactly new, WoW does it very well and TR's graphics > WoWs
Improvement? We will say its on par
7. Trash talking = new to MMORPG. Yup not since Duke Nukem 3d have we seen it... amazing...
Improvement? yes
8. Voice Overs = not new to MMORPG. EQ2 did it... horribly. TR does it much better. And I'm not talking about the quality of the voice overs, I was not expecting Morgan Freeman to take time off from making Axe commercials to do Voice overs, I mean the implementation and why they are there.
Improvement? yes
9. Comedy = not completely new to MMORPG. WoW had some... hey WoW has 9 million subs, it must suck
Improvement? We will say its on par
10. Cinematics = not new to MMORPG. FFXI did it, again poorly, you could die while watching them. TR allows you to watch them while zoning.
Improvement? yes
"But I made a list of reasons why I personally think TR IS INNOVATIVE and is going IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION for games."
Besides the horrible grammar this has two sentences in it. One stating the parts of the list that are innovative and the other half of the list which states parts which are the genre going in the right direction. I know reading a complete sentence is hard, which is why I have bolded it in case you could not read the parts in uppercase.

I've been reading the back and fourth going on here, and frankly, I think you've lost the struggle Meltdown.
When LOTRO came out, people were listing some pretty crazy reasons why they liked the game, but voice overs and crouching? You can't be serious in offering these as stand-out features. Nothing in your posts makes me want to play this game and only reinforces the negativity that I've already heard from Beta testers who are sick of the developers not listening to the community.
As far as I am concerned, until developers are willing to actually listen to what the community wants, no MMO can qualify as being "innovative". Remember Vanguard? The lead developer of that game had a great vision too. Now it's on SOE's fabulous Station Access lineup, precisely where he swore it never would go.
You also don't get to back peddle here and claim that your list wasn't significant to you now that it has been dragged through the mud by people who know better.
I've not seen anything truly innovative in Tabula Rusa, nor have I heard anything positive about its stability. It sounds like SWG right after the NGE with all the glitches and lag problems.
Innovative? I don't think so. Yes, it's pretty, yes, it was a nice distraction for a while. But, and this is only MY opinion based on what I like in mmo's, so don't flame me, but I think this game is boring as hell. There's nothing innovative about combat, I use two buttons, maybe 4 if I decide to move while I shoot. There's maybe, what, 8 or 10 abilities you can learn for each new tier? And what, maybe 3 are actually useful? Sorry, but having to dump points in the same 3 abilities for 20 lvls does not make for an interesting or challenging character build process. Every commando is exactly the same, every sniper is exactly the same, every medic is exactly the same. Say what you will about WoW, but you can see a serious difference between a fury and a prot warrior, between a ret and a holy pally. Yay, different ammo types for different stuff, that was interesting for like 30 secs.
Like I said, this game provided a nice distraction. It looks good, it's got some fun lore attached, it's fun watching mechs running blasting Banes. But my run on TR ends when I have to start paying for it. This game is no messiah. (Once again, this is only my opinion, I'm not telling anyone they shouldn't play it. To each his own).
You say this is a game for casual players. What I don't understand is why a casual gamer would pay $50 for the game and $15 a month. Aren't there a lot of free online games for the casual gamer?
oh i get it another ignorant poster who has no clue what casual gamers are.

Or better yet...
http://www.azcentral.com/ent/books/articles/0507comicbooks0507.html
"Novelists turn to comic books..."
Or, can we also mention
Orson Scott Card, Brad Meltzer, Deepak Chopra who now have a line of comics or are writing a series...
But, we shall overlook your inadequacy with the fact you cannot find the finer art of the "comic book"...I think you better go take a visit to a comic shop now, and see the many comics from famous authors...then you may come on back and take the ludicrous statement you have made and revise as such....
Cheers!
(PS: As to Tabula Rasa...all i can say is... ........
I think comparing even those games to Shakespeare might be pushing it just a tad.

"They essentially want to say 'Correlation proves Causation' when it's just not true." - Sovrath
Anyway, this is all OT.

When was that patch? I may have to go back and check that out.

Aw c'mon let's be serious here.

Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
All FPS games have crouching.

If you stand in the same place they just keep falling out of the sky, hardly an "ambush".
Same ol' static spawns, only difference is they fall out of the sky.

Many games have damage types.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
It was cute the first couple times I heard it, but I have heard NPCs talk in lots of games over the years so it doesn't make me too excited..
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
Very weak, player models are flat out ugly.
Yes, you look at the back of your own head 90% of the time but you look at the other players when you interact with them and they look like crap.
Shrug, nothing innovative or new here.
Might make an okay console game but it is a lousy PC MMORPG.

Besides the horrible grammar this has two sentences in it. One stating the parts of the list that are innovative and the other half of the list which states parts which are the genre going in the right direction. I know reading a complete sentence is hard, which is why I have bolded it in case you could not read the parts in uppercase.
