1. Run over it to loot! Someone had mentioned this before. What an amazing concept, in an action packed MMO having the time to target a corpse and loot it just does not fit. I wouldn't be suprised to see more MMO's (namely asian MMO's who already have auto-loot buttons) looking at this idea.
Auto Assault.
2. Your weapon matters. Fighting machines with a sonic rifle? Guess what they are immune. Trying to take down that giant mech with your melee? Guess what it's not going to work. You cast a poison on a machine or on creatures who are natively poisonous? Nope immune.
Have you played *any* MMORPGs? Four off the top of my head:
LOTRO, SWG, WoW, GW
3. What your doing matters. Crouching = +20% dmg? (not sure on percent), running increases dodge, height advantage and cover reducing damage. People say "Hey thats done in FPS, nothing new." and the next person says "This has nothing FPS related". Make up your mind...
SWG Pre-CU (didn't play after CU, but it might have had it then as well)
4. Innovative approach to spawns. I understand this is purely cosmetic, but its been said that to show the strings of a game breaks immersion. And spawning is one of those strings. When a team of 5 Bane get beamed down behind me I don't think "Oh hey, respawns" I think "Crap an ambush".
GW.
5. Diversity of weapons. Yea WoW has maces, swords and axes all in 1h and 2h versions but does it really matter? I guess this could be grouped in with #2. But what ever happened to things like blunt weapons doing more dmg to undead and piercing not affecting skeletons etc. Nice to see this coming back.
LOTRO, GW.
6. Great graphics with little lag. You don't need Vangaurd quality realism to enjoy scenery, actually I thought Vanguard's graphics were pretty un-impressive (except the night sky). WoW did this beautifully and TR is probably 2nd on the list of games that really hit the nail on the head.
I'll pass this one, simply because it's subjective.
7. Trash talking. Thats right. I heard an NPC machine gunner spurt out "TASTE THE RAINBOW BITCH!" as he was mowing down Bane. WAIT WHAT!?!? Did that NPC just spew out obsenities at the other NPCs? I must be dreaming. Also talking with NPCs they swear all the time too, although most of that is filtered.
Seriously, have you played any MMO games? WoW, GW, LOTRO, SWG...
8. Voice overs. OMG THIS IS AMAZING. I'm the player who barely reads the quest text and runs around accepting as many as possible. But just one line from the NPC saying "Where is my ammo shipment? I need you to go check it out." I learned the story of the quest WITHOUT READING A DAMN WORD!!! And they ONLY talk that one line they don't spew out the entire quest text, just the story-line information. What an amazing concept.
EQ2, GW, LOTRO
9. Comedy. It's good to see a game embracing some comedy. I was standing around in town and a PA came on announcing that the "Back 40" was not to be used as a golf course and is actually a mine field. lol. Or not to use the wormhole to dump trash as the people on the other side were complaining. Haha, gotta love it.
Every game has some comedy. WoW is filled to the brim with it.
10. Cinematics. Not since FFXI have I seen Cinematics implemented well in an MMO. They give a great background of the area you are about to enter. I fear a lot of people just skip these though.
I like the game because it is getting closer to what I visualize the future of mmo games to be going. Shooter/3rd person/action/mmo/rpg A game that you can play solo oor pick up a group seamlessly while in game. Though this price module is not something that will be competitive in the market, since a larger portion of game from people like Capcom are moving into the Free To play / item shop catergory. If some how they could offer this as a buy to play it would have a great chance on a loarge install base. I will probably play thing for a while and finally get a marvelous taste of what Richard Garriot can produce, and he stepped outside of his element and created a post apoc sci fi mmo. Seems really strange that no one is giving him any credit on this, the entire premise of game design is completely different , I have not even seen 1 sword in this game.... Really takes a great designer to beable to make games across a multiple spectrums that lay between Fantasy and Sci Fi.
Really don't get what half of the people here want. What ever it is, you will never get it cause it is apparent with a lot posts you have no clue what mmo gaming is about or even what you want out of a game.
If that's the future of MMO games, I'll be playing single player games from now on. Seriously.
- graphics: nice, but nothing spectacular. Many places of shoddy workmanship in the landscape (e.g. floating rock walls, places where players can get stuck, etc.)
- inconsistent: slopes that are too steep for you to climb or jump in one part of the map, are suddenly perfectly acceptable in other parts of the map (getting out of ditches 1.5 meters high REALLY shouldn't be a problem, but in this game, it often is)
- AI: lacking. Yes, the mobs try to take cover. Their threat recognition, on the other hand, completely sucks. Once they're engaged fighting other NPCs, you can just stand in the middle of them, and kill them at leasure, because they're too preoccupied. As to the Stalkers and Striders (huge, heavily armored mechanical 'spiders'): total joke. AT-ATs in old SWG were a challenge. These things are boring loot boxes on legs.
- quests: same as always: kill X of Y, escort X to Y, find object X and bring to Y, liberate X. Some puzzles, but not many. More irritating than fun, but that may just be me.
- storyline: derivative, unimaginative, badly worked out. And please take the word 'science' in the 'science fiction' with a LARGE grain of salt.
- crafting system: a bad joke
- social functions: too few of them and too badly implemented. Barely any clan tools, no LFG tools
- no swords in game? Are you serious? How many levels have you played anyway? At level 30 you can become a spy (special weapon: sword) or a guardian (special weapon: quarterstaff). Worse still: they glow. Jedi envy anyone?
- replay value: minimal. Same quests for every branch of the specialization tree. Kill same mobs, solve same puzzles, just with slightly different weapons. Gets old fast.
My highest toon is currently 36. Would have been higher, but too many quests in the 22+ range are broken, and I didn't feel like grinding.
If you fall in love with this game, be my guest. Personally, I like some science with my fiction, and some depth to my games. Depth, incidentally, does not necessarily mean story line to me: I equate depth to the amount of play styles available to gamers (including non-combat ones), and the presence of a system that allows both casual and extremely complex gameplay.

you ma'am are the devils advocate. I think thats what I like about you.
I agree that right now they have limited play styles, but not as limited as some say. Granted everyone uses roughly the same guns throughout the game, with the increased difficulty it really allows classes to see their place.
Someone with a rifle is a great support while someone with a shotgun could be a damage dealer. Healing discs for healers, I mean partially the reason play styles weren't needed before is because there really was no need for anyone else but yourself. When you play a game where you can pretty much do everything all you need is one play style.
I think along with grenades, bombs, and logos abilities, you can make a pretty decent build, with more options then one would expect.
As for non combat gameplay, I don't know what changes they've made to crafting yet, but they said they made it more worthwhile, I will post more when I look up on it.
As for replay value, yeah this game wouldn't have much of a replay value, depending on the end game. I haven't seen the end game yet so I don't know how worth it, it would be to get to it. I do say though, the game can very much be geared towards end game easily. Love it or hate it, the cloning system allows for you to have many different characters with minimal leveling. I guess theres nothing really to do other then to just, wait and see.
Current patch is a nightmare. Log in, you'll see. For every thing they fixed, three more have been broken. Mission content in the higher zones (Valverde+) still hasn't been fixed (broken missions, way too few missions to level, obvious missing content). The missions I bugged as broken two patches ago in Mires, Incline and Plains are mostly still broken. And on top of that, they COMPLETELY changed the balance. All classes are way weaker, with major skills nerfed to oblivion, and at the same time they upped damage on the mobs. 2 weeks till beta closes.... for launch. My oh my...
Linna
edit: oh, as to crafting: there were some people who'd been stocking up on recipes and materials, and spent hours crafting. I think they report 60% total failure (item destroyed) 40% no changes in item, 0% success.
played beta for several months, had several high-ish level characters.....
I enjoyed the game. I thought it had some interesting aspects that made it feel differant from other MMOs that I've played, it was a breath of fresh air.
However, I stopped playing a couple of patches ago. I'm not saying that I prolly won't try it again in the future, but right now, every patch breaks as much as it fixes.
I do have to say, the DEV team REALLY listens to the community, and this is a great positive for this game. It means that the people who play and enjoy the game will be able to have their opinions matter, and in some way shape the future of the game.
I have to say it's not for everyone...some people don't like sci-fi, some people don't like ANY game that's not "insert WoW clone title here", and some won't like the constant action. However, I do feel that people (especially here, on these forums) are unnecessarily harsh or critical of a game that's not finished yet. Many complaints I see are that the game lacks in certain areas that are simply not implemented yet.
Which brings me to another point....the game needs more time to be finished and polished. I feel that it's being rushed out the door....a disturbing trend among PC game companies these days. One of the things I've always loved about Id Software is they don't post release dates, other than "When it's done". Why can't companies adopt more of that attitude, and released finished, polished products?
I'm not a fanboi of TR by any means....hell, I'm not even playing it right now. I'll give it another go in about six months, and see, I guess. But it IS a good game, with promise to be an even better game, and I think it's unfairly bashed by many.
Too many uneducated people raging on a game far before the beta is even complete. Last patch says everything, the game has completely changed over night.
As far as promises prior to beta... The only thing they are promising is an army surplus (Auction house). Other then that, it's just balance changes and bug fixes.
Button smashing NO... If you play past lvl 15 then you will encounter many enemy's that require you to switch weapons, drop bombs, throw nades or use logos.
Play past lvl 20 if you are going to post about this game please.....................

Indeed. So exactly WHAT does it tell you that 'the game has completely changed over night' in that patch? A patch which, incidentally, was presented to us testers as the last testable patch before release (aka the 'miracle' patch)? And have you seen the changes the devs posted that are currently on the dev server (usually two patches ahead of the beta server)? The ones that propose ANOTHER set of sweeping changes to the classes? This turkey needs to go back to closed beta, it's nowhere NEAR ready for release.

One time on thanksgiving I had to put a turkey back in closed beta until it was edible.
I agree, there is work to be done. Yes they should "closed beta it up real nice" and all but it probably won't happen. With their patch rate though I still don't think it'll be ready to launch at the end of this month and I'm hoping and praying they won't be so stupid as to believe 3 days after a patch they will be able to release with no problems.

Played to 24, bored to tears, uninstalled.
Didn't require any strategy, just hold down the mouse button.
I used a couple shotguns and a couple rocket launchers to mitigate damage types.
Only bothered with a couple logos, rage was really all that was needed.
Rerolled a few times, even more boring than the soldier class.
If one desperately needs an excuse to play an online video game then I guess Tabula Rasa fills that need but to me it just feels like an Unreal Tournament mod for kids that cannot aim.

You're a different story though, you've been saying you've uninstalled it for awhile. If that was so you haven't even tried the new patch.
Not that I care though, I just find it interesting the same people really all say the same things.

Honestly, I don't believe it has had any where near enough time to have gone through any evolutionary changes from when I last played.
People are grasping at straws saying that increasing mob difficulty was some kind of miracle that gave the game awesome playability when in reality all that did was slow it down a bit.
The crafting system is so weak I wasn't able to make anything better, or even cheaper, than what came in drops and stores.
And the end game appears to now be mech based combat that will negate any and all work I've done on my character by supplanting my abilities with a big metal suit.
The game feels cobbled together, like someone was in a hurry to justify a bunch of wasted time and money.
