Someone mentioned saving up a few grand for a good pc. I just built a pc and only spent $800 all together with shipping for the parts and have a top-of-the-line PC. If your a smart shopper its not near that expensive. I have : 2gb RAM, 3.2ghz AMD dual-core processor, 250gb HDD, Vista, and Nvidia 8800GT 512mb card. So it's not expensive if your a smart consumber, as with anything.
4 gig ram is better. Especially for an MMO, and you'll be running that pile of shit Vista in the background too.
This NDA beta debate to me seems a little weak. We all want a complete and polished product no matter what we purchase. So why then do we as MMO players absolutely have to have the inside scoop on everythin an MMO does? I don't see movie fans bitching becuase they can't see a film in post production. And honestly why would you want to? Of course the movie/ game is going to be crap. It hasn't been polished for release. All you get are people who have limited experience of beta running around screaming doom becuase they tasted a 10th of a game which isn't finished. And low and behold they are disappointed because the game isn't up to expectations. Seriously what the f do you expect?
Anyways. "Biggest flop in history of MMOs incoming ?" I hope not. Can it get worse than what I've read happen to certain MMO's during/a couple of months after launch?
All I know is it can only get better with time. I hope Funcom listens to feedback and not whining.
Well first off the title of your thread is a tad off... The biggest flop in MMO history (and AoC can't surpass it) was Vanguard. Why? With all the "hardcore" EQ1 people that expected a return to that type of game. Brad McVanguard.. I mean he was like a god who walked the earth and created game worlds. AoC.. well Funcom... for an MMO they have shown us Anarchy Online. I was there.. I played it from launch for about two years. Heck I even beta tested it. I'm suprised that the game... is still around and to some extent that Funcom is still around. (I'm not bashing funcom). Anyway the point is.. to be the biggest flop.. you have to have the biggest anticipation.. and AoC just isn't there. I have it pre-ordered... but its no where near the top of my "MMO's I was most excited about" list. Beyond that... Are you in beta? Has there been some massive bunch of NDA leaks/breaks I'm not aware of? (as with vanguard). Or are you just basing everything you are posting on videos you've watched that were made to show a certain aspect of something. I mean I'm in another beta.. where they show amazing videos... but no where in the "beta" version of the game.. can you find what the video's show. So I guess there are two extremes to that video thing... Not showing enough.. and tech demo's that don't actually exist in your product.
One of the biggest flops would have to be Dark and Light.
Vanguard was far from a really bad game.
Amen to that everyone allways says Vsoh, but so many ppl bought into the DnL hype, only to get a game that at best only had 25% of its mechanics working, pre order bonus still not deliverd to most ppl then the company robbed every single one of its subbers with continued payments being taken after cancelling,no refunds ever being done even when agreed, customer service that only replied to about 2% of all enquires, etc etc !
the list really does go on and on im nowhere near to covering everything that was and still is wrong with this game!,and even now there has been no patch to the game in over a year,it hadda go F2P and even worse they cant do shit with it untill the court hearings are done as they dont even really own the games gfx engine license correctly!
and FTR im not playing Vsoh i bought into that as well, allthough that compaired to DnL(yes i was a day 1 subber and yes still have DnL installed just coz i like the music and riding my dragon from time to time lol)Vsoh was an uber polished mmorpg release!,and that kinda says it all lol
I would say that AoC is going to be the biggest anticapted Flop of 2008. Suggesting that it is going to be the biggest flop ever is over the top. But keep in mind, I've been playing video games since 1977.
4 gig ram is better. Especially for an MMO, and you'll be running that pile of shit Vista in the background too.
Just the sort of statements which will doom this game. Especially given that 4gigs of ram is only available with Vista 64........ And who the fck has that yet?
I, for example, have Vista and 4gigs or ram, but obviously only 3 gigs is usable. Either you knew that or should keep your mouth shut.

Well there you go. I take it back AoC will succedd because 1 in 10000 PC owners can play it.

You act as if Vista 64 is extremely hard to get. It's not. Anyone that really wants it can get it no problems. Also if anyone really wants to they can make more than just 3 gigs available on vista 32.
Whoever says it needs Vista 64 to run is very much wrong. The system Requirements have by now been made official. It's not easy to find them. And 2 Gigs are enough (if not for the highest settings, obviously).
you people have NO faith in professional developers. you get a bunch of old school developers and stick them with a team of new developers and you get the pile of crap that was Vanguard (it was bound to be a disaster). again you get a brand new team (two teams infact) that work on two different MMO's (with some questionable business dealings) and you get Star Trek Online and (cant even remember the other one...its was about Rome). Now those games had a problem due to crappy management, the team was not solid and the lack of experience (i dont care if you made EQ or UO those games are old and the new MMO's are different you cant reproduce these old games and expect tonnes of followers). Now all the other games (like WAR and AoC) have a good mix of experienced developers and new developers. they are also managed very well and (dare i say it) are professional developers. you cant assume that because a few games fail that EVERY game is gonna collapse.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Sorry but you might want to change the heading to 2nd biggest flop. SOE holds number one for SWG!
No no no, SOE was a flip flop.
It was a great game until they flipped everything around, slapped it on the ass, and said here is our new innovative idea for the game. "Oh the expansion? Well we just thought the NGE were too full of teh win!"

I realize that, but you can get 2gigs of RAM right now for $34.00 off of Newegg.. so make that $834 lol. And actually I work for HP, 90% of all "Vista" issues are user made and not anything to do with Vista. I have no problems with Vista and work with it everyday, especially since the SP1 came out this month!
Bingo. I am retailer and deal with it daily, dont listen to the Vista sucks crap. The OS is awesome. And the biggest flop was AC2. Everyone is lookiing for something new, WoW has and will always dominate... Some people want something new, so the game will be a huge success in the begining..... Its a matter of keeping those customers who plan on jumping ship when WAR comes out.
Quick question, what was wrong with Anarchy Onlines launch? i didnt pay attention to the game when it was released so i have no clue.
Well it is almost hard to start....
1. Lag the game lagged so bad that when you got in a populated area you could basically just crash and not move at all. You could be stuck there for a long time working your way out.
2. instance zoning not working. You would come to an instance like going into a shop or mission and it wouldn't zone you at all. Not so bad when going into a shop but being stuck in a shop for a 8 hours was really sucking...
3. Servers being down or not accessable. Many times you couldn't get into the game at all.
4. Missions being broken. You would go into the mission instance and doors would open to blackness, mission objectives were missing or you would basically be stuck.
5. Constant server crashes with massive roll backs. Play the game and you manage to play for 2 hours and get a little xp only to have it crash and you are back where you started two hours ago... One time I even lost a whole day.
I think that was some of the MAJOR issues. I'm not even touching on class balance, abilities, pets or other broken things.
Make no mistake AO was the worst launch of a game that ever happened. People say Vanguard was bad but compared to AO vanguard was near perfect.
After AO I think horizons was pretty high. The mobs would rubberband all over, npcs were broken, parts of the world empty, the graphics poor.
AC2 wasn't that bad just nerfed to the point where it was boring. The game did work it just didn't have a very interesting system. Classes were dull, there was no real crafting, everything was super simple.
Shadowbane was pretty bad at launch. The UI sucked big time. It had lots of problems with server sync where things would rubberband all over. It was overhyped. At the high end it was an endless grind for money to keep your city repaired between battles.
I never played dark and light but here is was aweful.
Matrix online had a totally fobar combat system that would freeze up so bad in the middle of battles that you would just end up dead with no clue how you died. And the missions were completely repetative and boring.
Vanguard had countless technical issues and required a very high end computer but at least the game worked so I'd put it at the bottom of this list.
People complain about SWG but at launch I thought it was ok. What I didn't like was them revamping major game systems repeatedly in the game. Finally in the NGE they completely ruined the game beyond belief making it entirely different. I should say it wasn't ruined it was just changed into a more action oriented game style that I personally don't like. There are however people that do like it so.... But the real sin was what they did to the crafting system in my opinion. I canceled two accounts over that upgrade.
There have also been a number of other games that have released recently that I haven't played but have also gotten aweful reviews.... Archlord, sword of the new world, and others that have launched and pretty quickly gone free to play or died...
Just to clear up any confusion.. Most of these 'invisable walls' are painted on enviroments, hard coded and not going anywhere. What someone suggested earlier is right.. This invisable 'walls' and boundaries are to funnel players into certain areas.. BUT This is NOT going to be fixed or changed.. They intended this and its a really horrible lash to the game.
The worst was this lake in a lvl 40 zone.. You could follow a trail down and swim in the lake.. But on the cliffs overlooking the lake.. Invisable wall makes it seem like just scenary.
You have like 2 extra monthes to wait for Warhammer.. AOC is going to be a flop for awhile.. And honestly it needs to hold off release and revamp alot of its problems.
It don't matter if they're laughing with you or at you, so long as they're laughing.

The amount of misinformation and stupidity in this (and other) threads is astonishing.
Bravo! You just added to the thread.
