Biggest flop in history of MMOs incoming ?

Uh oh, first post... hello there!

Regarding MMORPG-Flops... we shall not forget EA's "Motor City Online". Well, it wasn't a RPG but you had to pay a monthly fee - I think that's the reason it deserves to be mentioned here.

MCO was a Racing-MMO developed as "Need For Speed Motor City" (Project Title), a revolutionary view at the racing genre with many elements of MMORPGs like Items (car parts), rare stuff (rare cars/parts), socialising (Clubs/clubraces), avatars, content patches (cars/tracks/gameplay addons). MCO was great fun, addictive, skillbased, well-balanced, easy to learn & hard to master. Too bad it became an epic failure:

    - gfx-engine was totally outdated by release (10/2001) with gfx used by NFS3

    - lag/crashes/cheating was horrible those days... remember paying for an online game wasn't popular in 2001.

    - there was absolutely ZERO marketing&promotion (hey, EA!)

    - and maybe the biggest reason to be D00mz: They promised content patches (cars/tracks/parts blabla) to be distributed after release. But what did they do? They ripped off about 30% of the content seen in beta (cars/tracks/parts) and gave something from that stuff back every several months, allthough the data was placed on the retail cd-rom already!!! Imagine WoWs Burning Crusade Addon sleeping on your HD since 2005 but released as "new stuff".

They sold about maybe 20k copies of MCO... 4 servers from the start... an average of 300 people per server playing on prime time six months after release... 120 a year after release... two years after release in 8/2003 the servers were shut down by EA in order to concentrate on the next epic failure Earth & Beyond.

Now thats what I call one of the biggest flops in MMO history.

But I would still pay&play If I could...

My vote is on Dark and Light.  The biggest belly flop is made from the highest board, and the D&L hype was in the stratosphere until its release.

The Vanguard hype wasn't anywhere near as high as the D&L hype.

I say just wait for the game to come out and then post an intelligent opinion.

  • Like Vanguard, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, Pirates of the Burning Sea, etc (these were the last major MMORPG's...) Age of Conan will flop.

And there is a reason it will flop: too high grahics, means toooo, way toooo much LAG for an MMO.

This combined with so called "real time" combat will mean that the guys with the lesser lag will win all the time. Bye skill, bye advantages of gear.

All this for a PvP game and you are DONE.

Of course this was already mentioned by a LOT of pre reviewers on the web, but what did the developpers do?

They put in the first 20(!) levels of solo play for Conan.

With this method they could fill in the content and PRE LOAD graphs so players won't be aware of the terrible lag when they want to do battles of let's say 10 against 10 in the later levels.

So ... who is cheating on who in this MMORPG, which for its first 20 levels is just an off line game with preloaded fancy graphics.

But like neutral comments said on the web: the moment you fight with groups 5 against 5 it's LAG time and really unplayable.

    There you go ...

    Another one bites the dust .. N E X T

War's incoming implosion will suck more air then AoC's.

That's all I have to say on the topic.

What are you people so getting worked up about? The chances of Age of Conan having a good launch are slim to none, that's just MMO life. Will the game grow up to be good and/or succesful? Time will tell. If not, then not...

If you don't want to waste money, wait a year before you buy it. It will be a lot easier to judge by then...

And the people hurt most by a failed game are the developers, not us.

Honestly, all the bugs in the world won't be the problem for AoC

The absurd system requirements, on the other hand, I would consider the game's biggest nemesis.

Cutting edge technology is cool, I'm glad they're rewarding those who are up to date. But it's just a simple fact that not everyone has super computers, or even great computers. Practically requiring a monstrous machine to even play the game is silly, honestly, and I think that will hurt the sales ,more than any other factor.

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

  • TerranahTerranah Member UncommonPosts: 3,575

I agree with the sentiment above.  If the system req's are too high, that will prevent a lot of people from enjoying the game and hence limit it's potential.

From what I've read though the game is very scaleable, so let's see what happens.

So it won't be a flop, but it's far from being the major hit Funcom wants to sell to us.

This post actually made me feel better about AOC, since I hate both crafting and roleplaying. It will be nice to have a mmorpg where adventuring isn't gimped to appease crafters.

The only way this game becomes a major flop is if AOC has major bug issues at launch which is something that we will not know until launch.

I've been playing TR for the last week just as something to do while waiting for the next mmos to come out ( bored with the old ones) - and I've got to mention.. I get no lag.  Video or internet.  Also off topic but I am finding pretty amusing as a time filler.

That being said.. every FPS out there is a pvp game, and in an FPS ping is not god.  Although it can help (and having a ping a few hundred ms over everyone else is bad indeed), I personally mop the floor with people who have pings of say.. 20ms, while I have one of 150ms in one particular recent title that is about as high speed as you can get these days (quake wars, more more high adrenaline than the bf series).

Compared to those types games (even the slower less responsive fps ones), an mmo's lag doesn't matter much.

As for the graphics... If you are trying to get the speed of a ferrari out of a 1979 chevette, of course your PC will be bogged down. If your pc is not maintained properly it will bog down.  If you run torrents in the background, your pc will bog down. Etc etc etc.  And if you expect 1990 graphics out of a 2008 game.. you are silly and should consider getting with the times as far as hardware goes.  Or play games designed for your hardware without complaining about games made for today's hardware.

So let me make it clear, as a vet of the most ping-dependent pvp games for the last 10 years or so (or how ever long since the days of mplayer's quake 1 ctf), I can safely say that lag is the lamest excuse out there for just being a bad player.

As for mmo flops.. yea.. DnL was not pretty.  But anyway there's always some doomsayer at every mmo launch saying the sky has fallen and the end is near.  How predictable and rather boring by now.

Hahaha....thats funny as hell.  But seriously we will all find out how the lag will be weekend after next when they have the PVP beta thing for the weekend.  Come the following monday we will have a better picture on where the game stands.

Problem is that will barely run it and when 20 people are on one screen going at it you re doomed. Not to mention a huge siege , slide show central.

No of the content I've seen so far is MMO content.  Its all one person walking, running or riding around.  That doesn't sound pormising to me.
Recomended rig...  Now.  PPL can say whatever they like but those that play MMOs know how much FPS and no lag matters.   So are we seeing a game that will be running over  20fps with 40 ppl in same area?  And do you need PC from Nasa for that ?  And it must eat up memory and have long time loading screens.
Graphics.  Look great but how many bad paths and holes will it create?  My guess is alot. And I mean ALOT.  HOw fun will it be to fight mobs that run away from you to be able to get to you ?  I think we will see alot of those and even more of where players become stuck cause of enviroment issues.
Combat.  Melee combat looks ... well nice...  But is this game just gonna be about chopping heads as melee and nothing else ?  Was watching video of the makers explain the system and tbh the Spell system seems to be very weak.  What kinda game can maintain any kinda integrity when it seems to be supporting just one way of playing ?
How good of a launch can this game throw out.  Considering the lenght it has been in development it has to be  very very smooth now so it should be great.  But ... will it really ?   There are huge names behind this game but is that enough ?   I'm really not sure.   I see this one beeing full of maybes - so many that no normal person should take any chance of Pre-order.
My advise.  Wait for release.  Hope for lift of NDA and lets hear from the testers what has been going on.  But if no NDA will be lift then we all know it was bad.
I think many are hoping for a good game in AOC.  But pretty much everything is telling us it will be.... anything but smooth sailing.   But even if it did.   Will it ever be a playable MMO with big siege battles and raids ?   Can any kinda rig atm handle such groups of players with this kinda graphic?  I just can't see it happen.

Your absolutely right. AoC is destined to be an even bigger flop than Dark & Light and Vanguard combined. The lag is horrendous, especially in cities. This is one reason why the devs thought of making the first 20 levels single player just to fight the horrible lag.

The graphics are nice, the player models look great, monsters move and attack fluidly and also look great, BUT the gameplay isn't very desiring at all. It plays more like a action rpg than a traditional MMO.. Actually, It plays like a bug infested lagmachine with incredibly long load times in between zones.

If they can fix the performance issue, then it wont be that bad, but the game is more of a action rpg than a traditional mmo.. people have to understand that before deciding to buy the game.

Someone looked around the Age Of Conan website and posted the Open Beta date as May 2nd, I think its a post called Xbox 360 subs+Something about open beta, anyways, they NDA will be lifted then, and as for requirements, they wouldn't have made a lagtastic siege battle if they didn't think peoples computers could run it, there is options for graphics, and if you are really intent on no lag, play with 800x600 on the lowest detail settings, enough said. Everyone needs to stop crying, and stop saying that games are going to turn out horrible if people testing the game right now can't say anything. They still have another month and a bit to work everything out, and they are doing great at building hype for the game, lots of interviews, lots of movies, the PvP weekend comming up next weekend, which I'm hoping to get in to.

This is all just a bunch of speculation until people can get in there and test it themselves.

My advice: Sign up for closed beta, sign up for the PvP weekend and wait, open beta is supposedly less than a month away.

    Long live Conan.

    EDIT

    Open Beta Link: https://register.ageofconan.com/downtime/

It means that you better wait for people's actual impressions with the game before posting your own assumptions about it. At this point anyone can claim that is in the beta. The funniest part is that only a true beta tester can tell whether those who claim to be, are really in it, or at which point they decided to leave and start a moaning spree. All betas have bugs and issues and at any given time some issues are more prevailing than others.

Lets see how the release build is before we jump into conclusions from an unfinished product. The game may end up bug ridden and unplayable at release. We can call it flop right there. We can't call it flop when somebody decides he has seen enough of the beta (if he was actually there at all) and decides to bash the game due to the unfinished form.

One thing is certain, people don't like to be proven wrong. Even if the game is released in a good state and is fun to play, we'll still see the "told you so" doomsayers trying to defend their negative view of ... well, just about anything. LOTRO stellar release is a good example of a good game being buried by the doomsayers.

And by the way, lag is by definition network related. People may not have enough computer memory or decent hard drives. This may cause stalls in any MMO that's not 5+ years old. They are not however network related. And before people start bashing the developers about the "unplayble graphics", you need to realise that the game was designed with good graphics in mind. It's up to the people to consider if the lack of a good machine will deter from the gameplay. If so, they should probably stick to something more forgiving in the graphics department.

  • zeuseasonzeuseason Member UncommonPosts: 69

This game is looking great.  Seriously everytime I see it it looks better than the last.  Not just graphically, but the combat, the environments, the classes....everything.  It's so easy for people to bash something, but so difficult to give it praise.  The only thing I can relate to this is 'your parents tell you 'yes' a hundred times but you only remember the one time they said 'no'.
