I just canceled my sub. Not because I want to, I like this game, but cant play it for technical reasons. It worked perfectly fine on my computer in the beginning, but since a few patches ago I cant play it (blue screens, game crash, computer freeze, etc). I think I wait a month and give it another try, but as it is now I would pay to restart my computer 50 times a day.

Canceled my sub yesterday. I have till the 27th to play but don't think I will be logging back in at all. My main was a level 63 PoM and I had a level 32 Barb alt. Game was fun the first time playing level 1-20 but with each alt it plays almost the same every time. This becomes very old very fast. After about level 40ish the game really falls apart. Bugged quests, bugged mobs, no content, hard to get your group all together in the same in instance, group member droped form group and cant rejoin with out a relog, the list just goes on and on and seems to get worse as you gain levels. You would think with all the instancing that overcrouding wouldent be a problem but after level 50 there is only one zone per level range and the zones are so small that most the time there are more players at the spawn camps then mobs. Sorry this is getting long and I could go on and on. In closing I will just say I am done with this game and waiting for something much better.

I subscribed on May 22nd...played up until tonight but cancelled with no plans to resubscribe. Following reasons:

Crash-to-desktop bug. Annoying! And having to run that darn patcher everytime after due to wrong version error on log-in after a CTD.

FPS! I average 8 to 12 FPS 12 being when I'm standing still. In combat and in group settings it drops to a horrid 2 to 4 FPS! I have the following system:

    Intel 4 Pentium-D 3.33 GHz

    2 GB DDR2 RAM

    NVidia 7600 GS w/ 1 GB GDDR2 RAM

    250 GB 7200 RPM HD

    Latest video, audio, BIOS drivers

    Windows XP Pro 32-bit w/ SP 3

UPDATE: I did resubscribe today after I found some optimization tips that seem to have helped. I'm wIlling to give FunCom another shot at this game. I really do like it as I stated before, but just hoping FunCom will get the idea they need to broaden the optimization of the game. Much like SOE has done with Vanguard:SoH.

Been playing all afternoon and no CTD bug either! So here's hoping these player-found tips work!

    :)

    Update:

Hey folks, I'm currently watching articles and trying to find sources for some Age of Conan hype out there. While one article blasted Funcom very much, that doesn't mean its true. So anyhow, I'm trying to source it.

With the charts, at least here on MMORPG...it appears so far:

(edit: Just making clear this is an unofficial poll)

36.3% are happy with AoC, will continue to subscribe...or plan to subscribe  (good for FunCom)

63.7% were not happy with AoC. Cancelled or refused to subscribed (bad for FunCom)

Just looking at MMORPG.com as a forum or serious players. I'm trying to ascertain how these numbers jive with the less serious players, you know, the guys who want to play it ...but aren't at the level that some of the hardcore gamers are at.

I cancelled after about 3 weeks. This is my idea of a really BAD game. This wouldn't even be good on a console. Where's the exploration they promised me? I jump from mini map to mini map using teleporters or even npc's that teleport you? WTF? That's not even OK in a single player RPG these days. There is absolutely nothing to explore in this game, IMHO.

So, let's have a look at the crafting system. The only good thing I could find about it is that it doesn't work, and thus I never wasted much time on it. I'm tired of crafting systems that are put ingredients in a box and press the big red button and out comes a finished object, and of all those systems, this is the worst.

What about the combat system? Well at least it's a bit of action. And it looks really cool. But it just seems so utterly lacking in tactics etc. Sure, I only played to lvl 55 but up until then, I never saw any real crowd control at all. On my necro I had a spell that could root an enemy for what? 4 seconds? And only if he was already in my face. I had lots of dmg spells but all of them felt exactly the same. You mash a button and it does an amount of dmg. No cool different mechanics or anything.

Quests. The only quests I can remember were either 1: kill X of these, 2: gather X of these or 3: deliver this to X. There may have been the occasional quest that differed but they can't have been many since I can't even remember them. No puzzles, no riddles, no schemes no nothing.

All of this is of course my personal view. Something that has nothing to do with my personal tastes and that no sane person can object to, though, is that this game is so full of bugs it makes the 8th plague of Egypt look like a joke. I can honestly say that there hasn't been 1 hour of play time in AoC where I didn't encounter a major bug. People cried about Vanguard's unfinished state at launch but this is 10 times worse.

I think this is the first time in my gaming career that I've actually felt cheated on my money. Unless all you want is an online action game, do yourself a favor and stay away from this one, folks. This is not a MMO and it certainly isn't a RPG.

I played AOC like crazy for the first week. I hit 40 before most anyone on my server and then the "grind" hit me. I just stopped logging in and I canceled within a week. I'm now playing DAOC again for the RVR and some AO on side (5$ a month AO/SL). Back to my old ways I guess, until someone releases a new skill based MMORPG ( pre-NGE SWG, or UO style are both perfect for me)

Cancelled after 3 weeks as well. The game is way too easy to level, no replayability after you reach max level in pve. The game has potential to be better but even still I am unsure if I would even try it again. Other than people getting a kick out of ganking one another at loading zones, pvp doesn't serve any purpose.

Looks like the best thing that ever happened to Vanguard was the launch of AoC. I have been playing Vanguard since launch, never left, and can say honestly the number of people that are playing vanguard has jumped dramatically since AoC launched.

Cancelled at lvl 19, when I left Tortage.

Just not my cup of tea.
It felt a bit like a mix of Lotro and a korea-grinder ("kill 50 xxx" with nice graphics).

We logged on Ventrilo last night and the few of us that were in the AOC channel pretty much decided to not endure another boring and frustrating evening. Needless to say, the 4 of us cancelled and the channel got deleted.

That was a blown opportunity for AOC. The MMO community was and is again craving something new and creative. That 50 dollar hit kinda sucked.

If there is one positive from being duped into the purchase, we've at least got the box. SO if and when this thing gets re-anythinged....we Can scope it out.

    Man, canceling stunk.

I played for about three weeks and then canceled.  The game started out pretty well, but then it became clear around level 50 that there was really no content and that the zones were very small.

I really didn't like the instancing and the way that they broke the summoning function while grouped.

I thought the quests were poorly thought out, there was way too much running back and forth to quest nodes, and that was for quests that weren't broken.

There is only one group dungeon from level 1-50!  And that dungeon was just a zerg fest with no strategy at all.  It reminded me of CoH/CoV instances.  Dumb.

The class balance was pretty broken.  I felt really bad for my buddy who started an assassin  because it was clear that they really sucked in both PvE and PvP as opposed to my ToS which made PvE seem like a joke.

I was frustrated by several of the bugs, like the health/blessing bug.  I suspected and it was confirmed by others that the stats and skills were broken and that they didn't really help you at all.  What's the point of upgrading gear if none of the stats matter?

I really didn't like the way mounts worked.  My pre-order rhino was no faster than walking!  What kind of idiot thought this was going to be a good idea.  I understand that they have changed this since I quit, but it was pretty dumb to have it that way at launch.

This game might get better.  My buddy is still playing and said he'd let me know if Funcom fixes a lot of the issues that I have with it, however I am back playing my previous MMO, and will likely give WAR a shot in the fall.  It's too bad, because I really wanted to like AoC, I have been following it's development since the fall '07.  But, it really let me down.

I'm sorta amazed at many of the responses. Lots of people who tried and are cancelling.

The way I'm trying to reference this unofficial poll is to look at it as the "hardcore" community. I'm going to the AoC forums to see if I can scope the "fanboi" community....see what their comments are.

I think the casual gamer community may be obselete for AoC...since many systems will not run it. I could be wrong...and I'll see what's up in a few days.

I am currently playing and will resubscribe.

I think I know why some of the above posters said they played for a while then quit.  They powergamed and blitzed through the content and got bored quickly.  Funcom recently had a mini patch to add more content in the midrange to help with this.  Though I don't think this is a fault of Funcom or AoC, if you start any new MMO and race to the cap quickly you will find yourself bored.  After all, in your race to The Cap you missed out on the enjoyment of actually playing the game.

Funcom has already said that soon there will be a pvp patch soon to get the pvper's happy.  More planned for this summer too.

content coming, content coming, blah blah blah, I left and I wont be back untill this promised new content is there. im not even hardcore and I got to 60 waaaay to quick, it took me at least 2-3 months with most other games I have played.

AoC has been really fun, and the world is gorgeous, and I haven't come across any game breakin' bugs. I am 31, and am still lovin' the new experience. We'll see if it keeps me interested after WAR.

If only I had a nickle for each time I've heard this. So now it's MY fault that the game is boring? It's MY fault that the game poses no challenge whatsoever and I reach max lvl within a month of release? Seriously, I didn't even TRY to lvl fast. I'm what you might call a casual player. I played casually and knocked off 5-10 lvls per day. Would I have had more fun if I sat around killing grey mobs instead of doing the few quests AoC actually has? Doubtful. I doubt any new content will ever save this game. I can't stand porting between those cramped little miniature maps they call a "world"

At 27% retention now and 700 votes. If they sold lets say  700.000 copies (70% of 1 milion shipped), that means around 200.000 subscriptions. Not spectacular but not bad either.

A couple of hundred thou sounds right though it will diminish further. On a par with LoTRO.

  • metatronicmetatronic Member Posts: 329

Nice, not even a 30% retention rate.. And anyone who says polls like this are not accurate.. Tell that to politicians who use similar exit polls which barely touch upon 1-5% of all the voters.

  • TweakeeTweakee Member Posts: 18

Well, the poll is inaccurate to an extent, since people are more likely to choose to respond if they have a negative opinion, and the community here is both more hardcore than the average player (and thus more likely to grow bored quickly) and FAR more negative than the average player (just look around these forums for evidence of that).

That said, AoC has had a dismal launch, and appears to be a seriously flawed game. It's a shame, since I really liked the style, presentation, and basic combat gameplay. I was hopeful the game would be great, and I'd be very happy if Funcom turns things around in the near future, but I wasn't willing to bet my own money on that. :)

In a nutshell, yes it is.

Maybe you got used to the quick leveling in Tortage and expected that to continue.  Maybe you blizted to 40+ in a week and then found out you had less to do.  Hard to get groups if most of players are behind you in levels after all.  I don't know your personal situation, but those are guesses.

I also find it odd some people claim the launch was a failure.  There were no server crashes, no game breaking bugs either.  Sure there were bugs, but more annoying than anything else, no game is perfect.  They are being patched out twice a week.  Over 110k Collectors Editions sold, 500k Forum registrations, estimated 400k players on launch day.   I guess if you campare those numbers to the 10 million of That Other Game then it's a "failure".

30% retention after 1 month, now imagine that number in 3 or 6 months !  AOC will be a ghostown pretty soon.

An accurate poll relies on random sampling. Online polls are rarely accurate as people who participate are interested parties and you are more likely to have a skewed population sample.

Exit polls are nice because they get people's decision of what they actually voted for and why, rather than polls prior to the election where people can change their mind. However, it's still voluntary to give a response. You have to be careful which precincts  you go to, time of day, etc to make sure you have a good cross sample of various types of people.
