It's trying to be a fair poll and give answers to people who haven't played the game in hopes of not invalidating the polls by people voting on a topic that they do not have any idea about.

So, the two never subscribed options are for those who did not buy the game?
When Vanguard came out I have actually played it till my free month was over, AoC I have canceled (and never logged back in) after 3 weeks.
you know god doesnt like liars because that is so far fetched that i nearly pooped my pants. Vanguard wasnt even playable and yet you claim you played till month was over. HA its funny how people come in here to diss AoC. I see the problem with AoC and its a problem that will be fixed. Not much to do when you get to level 47ish and you have to grind. Which unfortunetly not many people like to do witht he combat system of AoC. This game is defenitly not grind friendly. to much work to get barely anything will make anyone go mad so i understand why you quit but dont say you played vanguard for 30days. thats just retarded. the only way you played this game would of been to have logged in every patch day to see if they fixed somthing and you realized they didnt. and logged back off.
I don't understand how you could call him a liar? Both my wife and I played Vanguard from launch, sure there were many issue's but nothing kept us from playing in the first month. Saying the game was completely unplayable is certainly not true.

You are right.. then the retention rate is bigger than shown. We should take out the 30% that never bought the game. Don't know how to do that
Edit: will try the easy way. My maths are terrible ...
I will say that to me there is almost no way that this game doesn't retain 10% of its subs after 6 months. With a million sold, ups I mean shipped, thats about 100k subs...That is if 9 out of 10 players just quit. I could see half or even 2/3s leaving if they don't get their shit together, but 1/10 will forget to cancel the sub FFS Would be interesting to see numbers on a game like shadowbane...how many initial boxes sold...and how many after 6 months were subbed....
I don't know if this is helpful to the topic but I have a moderately successful guild on Set server and we're constantly growing. Naturally at first it was all noobies (well we were all noob, eh?) now we're grabbing level 50's here and there along the way. Everyone plans to resub as far as I can tell and some of our members have friends leaving other games to come join. I can't say if this is a trend with other guilds because everyone has a different experience when they play mmo's. I have to honestly say we're all happy so far.
Don't get me wrong, AoC is far from perfect but it's not some hollow shell of a game. Our guild is running instances, dungeon crawls, gathering together, building our city, learning about crafted items etc etc. We look forward to more content as well as endgame content and seige fixed. I think they're working hard to improve this game. I'm a mature, realistic person and if I felt I were wasting my time I wouldn't be playing. This game is off to a good start (not great, not bad, right in the middle) There's nothing wrong with giving this game a try now, but honestly there isn't anything wrong with waiting for a bit either.
I can truly say that I see AoC heading in a positive direction and I don't see a repeat of what I saw in VG with the wheels falling off the bus so to speak.
Canceled after the 30 days included. This game has potential and some nice features, but it needs a lot of polishing before i am willing to pay monthly for it.
Nice, not even a 30% retention rate.. And anyone who says polls like this are not accurate.. Tell that to politicians who use similar exit polls which barely touch upon 1-5% of all the voters.
An accurate poll relies on random sampling. Online polls are rarely accurate as people who participate are interested parties and you are more likely to have a skewed population sample.
Exit polls are nice because they get people's decision of what they actually voted for and why, rather than polls prior to the election where people can change their mind. However, it's still voluntary to give a response. You have to be careful which precincts you go to, time of day, etc to make sure you have a good cross sample of various types of people.
But, this is an exit poll... people who are 'exiting' the game are voting
with the amount of haters who gathered at mmorpg.com i would have expected worse numbers for aoc
but i had a laugh since people see a poll (without random selecting the voters) as proof that aoc=fail we will see in a month IF funcom or "insiders" post their numbers..
MMOs currently playing: - About to play: Lord of the Rings Online Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

a little disapointed, a working crafting system had make a compansation to the grinding part of the game above lvl 60.
a funbug : however , which key I assigned to action : sit/stand it doesnt work ) / to sit on a chair in the tavern ends in relog, cause the char couldnt stand up from the chair using any key W,S,A.D )
so far so good, the game isnt bad, but the bugs and not implemented things kills the playfun.
end of it: account canceled before the end of 30 days freeplay

A little irrelevant and off-topic... but typing /stand gets you out of a chair.
with over 800 people voted, the statistical confidence of only 25% subscribing to AoC is pretty high.
I think retaining only 1 in 4 players of a brand new MMO is pretty shockingly bad myself...
Actually you are reading the poll wrong. It looks like they are retaining around 40% so far based on the poll. About 28% of the poll response is people that have not subscribed to the game at all.
40% is better then I would have expected, although I think the response would depend a lot on when someone responded relative to when they bought the game. I think in the first week or two people probably feel pretty positve about the game. I think it takes 3-4 weeks to reach the point where you decide you would rather cancel.

You're doing the maths wrong ;-) it's 35% retention based on this poll - 1 in 3 who play the game continue to subscribe. I agree about most people taking 3-4 weeks to work out the game is a piece of unfinished sh1t though.

I would be highly appreciative if FunCom posts their numbers. As I've stated before, this poll is not a scientific poll. However, it has some representation. It doesn't focus on whether you love it or hate it. It represents your status.
We all know lies occur on the boards. I'm sure some of the voters are not telling the truth or trying to mainpulate data. Still, every now and then, someone writes a comment that you can tell is unbiased. That's when you know your latching onto a true opinion.
So what you can do, is read the poll, check the numbers, trim off the outlyiers (so to speak), and then start sifting through the comments. Remove the h8ter and fanbois. Then start capitalizing on those posters who are clearly writing true experiences. Once you get their information...then you have a more complete story.
For example:
Does anyone dispute the problem with FunCom over customer service? I've read numerous experiences, even in their own forums, that this is s problem.

I canceled, sadly. I tried to like the game, to see a light at the end of the tunnel so to speak, but with each patch the performance of the client went down considerably. I went from the 50 fps when grinding to 20ish consistently; the game became almost unplayable at times, with random lockups and disconnects while zoning. I was on my way to having a second character at 80, but got tired of the bugs mentioned above. Tired of Necromancers killing me from stealth with no way to fight back because the search skill is horribly broken. Tired of being unable to defend my guildmates when they are attacked by someone of my faction. (Bane server FTL)
Now I just troll their forums, promoting Warhammer, and secretly hoping they fix their game to make it enjoyable for me again.

While this poll isn't scientific and has some flaws it is interesting to note that xfire numbers do kinda mirror it based on people playing the game. It was at peak something better then 90k hours and now it is down around 35k hours. So they have retained between 35 - 40 percent of their player usage which likely maps to peak user base vs current user base. Again not scientific or 100% but it sure is interesting that it closely matches this poll.

As ridiculous as this poll is, what was the idea behind the last two available options?
It's trying to be a fair poll and give answers to people who haven't played the game in hopes of not invalidating the polls by people voting on a topic that they do not have any idea about.
Waiting for the next thing

1% = 7.61 votes
30.2% never subscribed = 230 votes
26.3% will resubscribe = 200 votes
43.5% won't resubscribe = 331 votes
New total votes: 200+331 votes = 531 votes
will resubscribe = 37.67%
won't resubscribe = 62.33 %
That's a not too bad retention.

Sorry, I don't consider 30some percent retention rate after the first month to be a success.

Canceled after the 30 days included. This game has potential and some nice features, but it needs a lot of polishing before i am willing to pay monthly for it.
More of a breakdown form current figures, 63% who tried or leaving at the end of their subscription... I'd sail A0C=Fail.

I canceled my subscription the day I wrote my review.
I'll give it a chance to improve over the next few months, and then I'll check back to see what's up.
Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

I've been gone for a week, but one aspect that I'm interested in this thread is if anyone changed their status after voting.
Has anyone thought they would stay, voted they would continue their subscription, and then ended up cancelling? Why?
Has anyone thought they would leave, never subscribed, or thought they would never subscribe...but for some reason are now playing? Why?
I'm really interested in what changed you over from your last opinion...

60% of our guild has cancelled their subs already. We started with over 300 members.
