Funny thing is people were saying this about EQ and EQ2. They also said it about Ford and then General Motors They also said it about Doom and then Half-Life I will say one thing though, MMORPG's have to be very careful with barriers to entry. WoW was able to cream EQ because you could get to max level in WoW in 15 days and in EQ it took about 60, at the time. With each expansion and level cap raise, you are raising your barriers to entry for players who want to join the game. WoW with it's 2nd expansion is going to be catering to it's existing customers, but making it more difficult for new customers. That's the same thing that EQ did, which helped topple it from the throne, and probably restricted it's popularity. It was extremely daunting for a new player to come into EQ and see that he was 64 levels, 500 AA points and 9 planar flags behind the 'end game content' players. Now WoW is going to put their new players 79 levels behind. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. WoW tried to address it by increasing the experience gain for players levels 1-60 (I think), but they didn't balance other parts of the game with that increased experience rate - like crafting and aquiring gear. EQ has done the same thing, now, with their Hot Zones.
This is so wrong man,
Blizzard completely focuses on new players with every expansion. In fact, the best time to join as a new player is right after a new expansion. Everyone effectivly starts over. All that T5 T6 gear is obsolete. The ez mode solo quest rewards are better than the previous raid gear.
If anything wow does not cater to their existing customers and caters more towards getting new players involved in the end game with the release of their expansions.
Leveling to 79 is not the hard part of WoW, it will be gearing for t7 t8 etc... all of the stuff you do after you hit the level cap.
Just wanted to point out that a certain game called Guild Wars - which also is PVP-focused - sold 5 million copies and probably has close to a million regular players across the world. If Mythic does everything right, I could easily see the game having a million subscribers by 2009. I really wouldn't discount the table top fans of Warhammer, who number several million if you look at both the US and Europe.
Personally, I think the fact AOC did so well initially shows the MMORPG market is growing. We're no longer in an era where WOW completely dominates and everyone else is lucky to have a mere 100K subscribers.
I'll be honest here. I have no idea how this game is going to stack up against any MMO. Most mmorpg's take at least 5 years to make, WAR took 1.5 years. It looks like Mythic used World of Warcraft as their model and went from there. And hey, let's all be honest here, all bullcrap aside, the only thing that I see that's different is RvR, everything else is a complete copy of what World of Warcraft's foundation with some poor content here and there. Some people say that WAR is shaping up, I say that's a bunch of crap and that's pure smoke coming from their ass. And from what I've played, I don't see WAR really being a contender for awhile.
Like it or not, this game is unfinished by a long shot.
WAR should pop over 1 million subs easy without Asia, probably closer to 2 million. Most of your PvP players from WoW will come to WAR, the hard core PvE boys will stay in WoW.
Now the staying power of WAR is the thing, will there be enough new content and so forth to keep it going and interesting is to me the big question.

The difference is Pay to Play. GW is a free game. No subs.
Again Xfire: GW is rated as being daily played at 30K (Wow about 400K+). that mean the numbers of players in the western world (Chinese don't use Xfire) is 13 to 14 times less in GW. Could be around 300K players.
So 300 K active players for a freebee game. How many would continue if they had to play 15 dollars a month?
This has nothing to do with the potential of WAR of course, but it is a sign.
Now I know that this question has been asked at least once on this forum. I'm not going to go searching for it, because its probaly buried under 100s of threads. So, I am going to ask it again. WoW vs. WAR? I know WAR is still in beta and scheduled for release on Sept. 18th, but from what some of you beta testers have played and experienced, how does it compare to WoW? NOT, wel I need to be honost, it IS a fantasy MMORPG so is WOW but for me it ends there. I only was a Rank 31 due to the limitation the beta gave me when I entered and not even made it to lvl 32 due to limited time (rl) but already I felt it had much more then WOW has, so many thing are completly different and not compareble with eachother. But then again many are completly WOWIFIDE and will see WOW even in Pong Will it dent WoW's population? If so, by how much? Perhaps, wait and see when the game is out about 3/6 months before you could say it put a dent into WOW, afcourse release would probebly take some of the subs of of WOW but then this happens with almost any new released game, I bet ya that many MMORPG will lose some subs during hte release of WAR it's a natural thing that always has happend, so like I said ask that question again after WAR is released and out in the open for about 3/6 months to get a more realistic view if WOW or other MMORPG have gotten this dent. Is it possibly a WoW killer? ( I know that was a stupid question. ) Agree it is a stupid question and in my opinion no game has to another gamekiller, we need more games ....you hear me....... MORE .......and they do not need to be killers they just need to be fun and entertaining. The more games the more chances we have people finding the game to enjoy, people who want other games to be killed or fail should not even be into gaming. Just my opinion.
How many of you have actually even played WAR? I see a whoooole lot of speculating, and "oh they'll only get 100k" this and "from what I've seen" that, but really who has PLAYED the game extensively to actually have anything to base this on?
I know some probably have, and some probably don't really like it and that's to be expected. But I just love seeing all the nay-sayers that pop up before every single MMO launch, and most the time they're right, but after playing WAR I really believe it's going to do very well.
Just saying take most of these doom predictions with a grain of salt, as most of them are just blind guesses, not actually educated ones. If you have played it and have reasons for doubting its success, actually post those reasons along with it, and maybe put some backing behind your claims.
Judging by this podcast, as I haven't played the beta I can say that I will wait and see. I will try it when I get bored with WotLK. By that time, most of the baby bugs will be dealt with, class balance should be better and maybe some of the content cut recently will get patched back in.
I think it's gona do OK, not because of revolutionary features, but because it sounds like it's almost finished and bugs that are still in aren't major game braking issues. But I also believe that people just won't stop talking about public quests and the tome of knowledge so we can expect that in WoW maybe in the next expansion.
I think RvR will contribute by far the least to it's success.
First off I doubt it will dent wow population cause wow is still growing.
Second, if you read up on the forums you would know that pvp players from wow don't like the "slow" combat in this game. So I doubt those people will come here. My gueses this game will get about 2 million max people (hopefully more) And no it is not a wow killer. Cause wow is to casual based pve and warhammer is more of a casual/hardcore based pvp game.
2 Million?
Everquest 2 and Lord of the rings online only have about 200k.
Half a million would already be extremely positive.
My bet is 100k in six months because there is only PVP and PVE and nothing else to do.
That's the most ridiculous statement I've read in a long time.

If you are not accustomed to eating kiwi, go slow at first.
Imo Warhammer Online will sell a couple million or more the first few months. It will do much better than AoC. It has the "potential" to reach WoW like numbers but that will take a long time and they have a lot of work to do to get to that point. There are so many ways they could fail.
The key is when Wotlk is launched. If War has any serious issues at that time the players will leave in droves. If they fail to deliver long term game play like AoC did, then War will drop to a few hundred thousand players and never recover. It will still make money but most people will consider it a failure.
So to get WoW like numbers Mythic has to do everything right. Fortunately for them Blizzard is in epic fail mode. WoW has become a grindfest as bad or worse than EQ ever was. They lost their focus and the game just isn't fun anymore. If War continues to deliver the fun factor they will win.

OK only pvp AND pve? what the fuck else is there? crafting?they have that and they are actually doing it the right way, letting us only make stuff that is good for the WAR effort (Potions, enchantments so far).
Oh and Lotro only has 200k-300k due to lack of endgame content that will change with Mines of moria.
I see Lotro hitting 500k easily.
Lets try to keep in mind that WoW is a freak of nature, in reality having 200k+ subs is great for a MMO.
I can see WAR doing 1-2 million subs in the first year plus, after than it depends on blizzard and Biowares next MMO.
I think, it will be just like all other MMOs after wow. The hype arranges a big initial selling, but after 1 or 2 weeks the wow section will start to flame the game, because its not wow. Exactly, the whole game is based towards PVP. No noteworthy economy and crafting at all, which I consider a huge part of a mmorpg. This is a game for people who like to PVP whole day long, and do some pve when they get bored or do some "crafting".

I just don't see a big market for that.
Then stop watching these boards and go back to WoW. This is my first time using the turn "Go back to WoW."
WAR isn't just PvP/RvR. The emphasis is there. It's always there. Many of the rewards are there. But PvE is there. Honestly I couldn't have laughed harder at your previous comment. "Only has PvP and PvE." Kind of like saying I went to see a movie but it was movie. Crafting and economy at some part ruined WoW for me. More fuel for grindfest. And I laugh at that. Economy my ass.
WAR being a success? Yes, it will succeed.
No, it isn't going to kill, hurt, or scratch WoW.
Yes, some people will unsub WoW for WAR, even after WotLK.
My hopes is that any time, a year or more from now, they break a few million.
Six months? At least 500k.

Well WOW is a huge success and only offers meaningless crafting and no economy worth mentioning, on top of that you have crowded meaningless BGs and fans of the meaningless arena bragging rights thingy.
Im sure there is a market.

People keep bringing up the slow combat crap? Ive played AOC, LOTRO, DAOC and UO to name just a few.
Unless something has changed where is this slow combat you speak of?
Only difference with AOC is that you had directional swings and a nerfed dodge/block. Didnt really make that game feel fast for me, just useless white damage and i played an Assassin in AOC, a Lotus sin at that.
Warhammer has combat where you press you swing.... where is the delay? Some spells have a cast time... but where dont they? Some abilities are a charge build up type... but whats the difference with that and a combo? You use other abilities while you wait for a charged ability and make a decision do i use it or not to let it build more?

Sniper is another term for unorthodox surgeon.
2 Million?
Everquest 2 and Lord of the rings online only have about 200k.
Half a million would already be extremely positive.

My bet is 100k in six months because there is only PVP and PVE and nothing else to do.

Well WOW is a huge success and only offers meaningless crafting and no economy worth mentioning, on top of that you have crowded meaningless BGs and fans of the meaningless arena bragging rights thingy.
Im sure there is a market.
If you are not accustomed to eating kiwi, go slow at first.
I guess Wow players will agree with this statement every time they sell and buy on the auction house ))
The thread started very nice but is now to the usual mmorpg.com level. Meaningless discussions.
Go visit http://www.warhammeralliance.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=109 for some real substance about the WAR.
It is my WoW combo breaker, whatever that counts for.

...I'm in your panties
What gives?
