Personally, I shell out my $15 a month for one reason - group play. If I want to play by myself, I'll play Civ IV or another console game. However, as a casual player it is nice to not have to waste what little time I have online waiting to find a group, so being able to solo is nice. Point is, I see the need to have both.
The main problem is those two requirements aren't quite contradictory, but they are close. For the most part, games that don't "force" grouping end up with a community that is not oriented towards grouping. It is not that those communities are "mean", or unhelpful, they just don't have much attitude towards true peer cooperation and interaction. Games need to find a balance between the two, but also need to realize balance in reality probably means that the game mechanics are oriented more towards grouping.
EQ (back in the day)found that balance in the classes. Some solo'd very well (Druid, Monk), but were not the greatest to play in groups. Others, were decent at either (Mage, Necro) in certain situations. And finally there were some that could barely solo for exp at all, but were must haves in groups (Warrior, Cleric). DAoC (again, back in the day), was a little more tolerant of players soloing, but the exp rewards and when in a group meant that most players would group given half the chance (and the dungeon dropped loot didn't hurt either). Also, the fact that neither game attained the sub base that WoW has meant a much "cozier" atmosphere (especially in DAoC where the server population was split between three realms) which meant people had to pay attention to their reputations, both in game and out.
WoW's approach was to make it possible to solo all the way to cap, but restrict most of the high end gear to dungeons which required a raid (and for the most part, a good guild). If you were a casual gamer, the good news was you could get something done even if you only had an hour to play, the bad news is, the end game content was all but closed to you.
What most players should do is seek out the game the fits their playstyle (even if it means graphics that aren't topnotch, or a perfect UI), instead of insisting on a particular game and complaining that it isn't soloable or group oriented. Despite WoW, there are still plenty of viable games that not only encourage grouping, but come close to requiring it. If you are a soloer, and are dissatisfied with you choices of MMO's, buy an Xbox and enjoy the superior graphics.

It is true because I've seen it to be true. There's a good reason why people were constantly LFG in MMORPGs like Everquest and FFXI and why next to no one is ever looking for a group in games like World of Warcraft, Warhammer and the like. Grouping was a FAR easier method in that game to advance your character than soloing except for a handful of classes which often got by on runspeed buffs and snare spells, simply preventing the mobs from hitting them.
Fast forward to 2004 and I saw the same thing upon the launch of Everquest II. Players grouped with each other all the time because that was the best way to gain XP. Sure, there was soloing, but it consisted of mainly wacking mobs at the entrance to every zone over and over again for very minimal experience. Five years later, the game is nowhere near as group heavy as it once was, giving players far more opportunity to solo, and believe me, a year's worth of experience in that game tells me they very well do solo. Same game, same cummunity. De-emphasize grouping, players solo. It's that simple.
Players only group with other players because they are heavily encouraged to do so. There's no way around this observation as I have played too many MMORPGs to see it any differently. In WoW, players have little reason at all to group with one another and outside of an occasional loot run in a dungeon, players in WoW don't group with one another, and that's because they have no reason to. Players reach the level cap far faster just by doing solo quests and then worried about their gear. In fact, leveling by running only dungeons isn't even really that feasible...that is, if you want to level up any time soon. The XP per dungeon run is terrible.
There are players out there who do group with others just for the fun of it or for the socialization, but they are rare. Picture real life for a moment. You work at Wal-Mart and are tasked with unloading boxes of heavy equipment. Well, your fellow emloyees are likely to help you, but what is the likelihood of a total stranger stopping by to assist you with the box? Pretty darn slim. If the individual has no reason for associating with you, don't look for much help. That said, the driving force behind grouping is the reward in general cases, and forcing players to interact as a group forces interaction and out of that comes a chance for a lasting friendship which most likely would not have occured just by observing that same individual fighting crabs on a beach.

I just hope that its not full of people soloing depriving those of us who want to group of our freedom to do so. Regardless Ill play it anyway because I cant count the hours of entertainment that Square and Enix have given me over the years.

Actually playing a group centric game like Final fantasy might change your opinion that you love soloing so much because its fun and grouping sucks because of X and Y reasons, when in reality you only enjoy soloing because it boasts a higher xp/hour in w/e game you play. And if you were playing another game where grouping is the way to go you would be calling solo players foolish.

Actually playing a group centric game like Final fantasy might change your opinion that you love soloing so much because its fun and grouping sucks because of X and Y reasons, when in reality you only enjoy soloing because it boasts a higher xp/hour in w/e game you play. And if you were playing another game where grouping is the way to go you would be calling solo players foolish.
