Why does everyone hate World of Warcraft? It obviously can't be that bad if...

    Herd instinct:

They've never played WoW but are happy to jump on any bandwagon.
    Infantility:

They think they're cool when they hate something great.
    Trolling:

They don't need any special reason to hate anything publicly, no matter what it is.
    Disability:

They failed at simple tasks in WoW, like delivering the amount of DPS required for raiding.
    What's your reason?

My reason is that WoW's sheer popularity and chokehold on the MMO genre as a whole has kept the industry from moving forward in any significant way.  Its fanbase, thanks to being mostly first-time MMO players, have no use for games with less polish or content than a game which is five years old, incredibly well-supported, unbelievably popular and will run on anything.  Most publishers, seeing WoW's millions, want nothing other than WoW clones.

In short, the really well-connected folks don't have license to make real steps in any particular direction.  WoW was a big step; it was an iteration on the genre, a move forward from the Everquest way of doing things, eliminating much of the drone and dross while it (literally) perfected the kind of stat-and-item search that keeps folks coming back.  More accessible, easier to get into, easier to play for shorter periods, and with more polish and balance than any game could ever hope to match.

I'm not pining for the old world of video games.  It just infuriates me that WoW is, both ideologically and financially, -keeping- the MMO genre in what is fast becoming a kind of dark age.  There've been a few new ideas, many of which WoW has picked up on... but really, not much has been made save for WoW clones or  games lacking the graphical punch, polish, content and population that are necessary to beat out World of Warcraft these days.

I don't dislike it as a game.  It was an absolute triumph and a breath of fresh air, set to reinvigorate the genre when it was released five years ago.  My problem with WoW stems with its players; most of them are actively hostile towards new or different games, and it keeps publishers cranking out the same old crap and out-there game companies failing or stagnating for lack of funding.

It seems impossible to make a significant step forward while WoW is still in the picture, and it will be a long time before that's no longer the case.  I dislike WoW because it handcuffs the genre something awful, and disables the kind of stepping-forward that games have done from Wolfenstein to DOOM, or Everquest to WoW.  Nothing can make that step with WoW; it's so good from a business standpoint that it can't be beat, and no one can find a reason to upgrade despite many players wanting an viable alternative.

WoW isn't even an MMO anymore, it has become a que lobby for random cross server instance groups or schedualed guild raids. That is a big reason people hate it. It's become a parady of itself in a way. It defined the genre then left the genre completely.

I disagree... you talk like WoW has been the leading MMO for like 10 years but it's only been out for 5, and it wasn't a leading MMO right away, it took time for people to come to it and learn they liked it. Games take a long time to make, especially with all the high quality graphics gamers demand (but take away from the gameplay, because of costs and time). You're "infuriated" and you "hate" WoW.. I suggest you cool off and wisen up, it's just a game and it's not "holding the genre back". If people want to be creative and make a good game they will. No great game has ever held others back before. Year after year good games are made and released, you just need to be patient. Blizzard themselves are making a second MMO. I'm sure you won't even play that one because you'll hate it for a stupid reason and it will infuriate you.

Btw, I don't play WoW anymore, so I'm not a "fanboy". I just thought your post was silly.

You can't prove taste, as it's subjective. In my opinion, comparing it to other MMOs I have played and currently play, WoW is bad. I don't like the graphics, I don't like the endless grind, and I don't like the playerbase (as a whole).

Plus what I notice a lot on this site, is that everyone refers to it as a kiddie game, caters for the teen masses etc etc... in all the years that I played I found the average age of gamers to be 20-30 with a shitload of them women, so this backhand swipe at it being a game for lightheaded kids and teens is just pure bullshit.
This site caters for a large percentage of gamers who id love nothing more than to smack simply cause they stopped being gamers and became elitist assholes who dismiss anything and everything that isn’t the diehard sandbox bullshit 1000sub game their currently playing.
Go and Hate on something fucking relevant.

I hate to admit it but I agree 100% with this statement. Also before anyone asks I have played MMOs since UO came out. Hell I even played a few MUDs before that.

I actually hate what has happened to gamers more than what has happened to the games.

I hate it. I hate the dumbing down it brung to the genre. I hate it because it brung a whole slew of kids, soccer moms and whiney people who dont want challenge. I hate it because it made MMO's go mainstream and in so doing, ruined what made them great. I hate it because most of the people who funded and got this genre going in the first place, has been overun and left out in the cold for games to play. And lets face it, it is a mcdonalds, wii, mentality.  I consider those 11 million people to be the low and slow end of humanity.

Whats more, even people who fell into the above type catagory are starting to wake up and ask for more.

and just because your paranoid doesnt mean they're not all out to get you eh! just as people who lack social graces are rarely the life and soul of the party, you seem to consider most other online gamers as being retarded, but i have to wonder who is the one missing out the most, maybe its time to take a step back and re-evaluate.

I suppose I belong to the lesser of the masses. I downloaded the trial and gave it a go. I didn't like it at all. It's not that it's a terrible game, rather, just not for me. Simple cartoon graphics, very limited character creation and very cookie cutter in presentation. I actually think the simple game style is one of the reasons why it's as popular as it is. It's just not my "cup of tea".

That's a little harsh; don't you think? Who are you to pass such judgement? I tried WOW and didn't like it but I cannot deny it's success. The game was created to appeal to the masses and it does so successfully. To insult the player base is not only very ignorant; it's asinine.

I wonder what music you listen to or what movies you go and see. I'll bet most of what you watch and listen to appeals to the masses as well. So I wonder if you, yourself, fall into this low and slow end of humanity you speak of. Because there is no diffrence.

No I agree with Innoss. The high end of humanity sure spends their time browsing mmorpg.com.

    /sarcasm.

Perhaps the high end of humanity are out there making a difference in the world. they dont have time for hardcore shit, so they play wow casually. ;-)

The reasonable reader will read what i wrote and know who i am referring to by my comment. Those who take offense, might just be the exact type of person i am referring to. There is 0 doubt that the game is made for the masses. In history, literature, and basic human understanding, the masses have always been considered stupid, unpredictable, and dangerous. All 3 of those terms can be applied in some form.

They have always been considered stupid because they have always been treated that way. Usualy by tyrants and political leaders on a power trip. Just because you might wear a clever t-shirt and listen to music no one has ever heard about doesnt set you apart from the masses.

That is.... so true, they're my feelings, minus the high end of humanity, it is still a game after all and even doing full time school and work I'd still play WoW full time too. I played the original release of WoW, even helped mold a server and a major guild. Things slowly began going downhill though, too easy to get places, too fast paced. The storyline slowly began to derail, too many "heros" walking around in the armor it took them barely any heart ache or difficulty to get aside from pushing 2 or 3 buttons over and over again. This post is just so true! Damn you WoW for becoming a shell of what should have been! A world isn't a world if you don't have to climb the mountains, trudge the wastelands, relish at the beautify as you jog through the forests, or have to swim through the sparkling blue seas filled with exotic creatures. Clicking on "LFG" or any other window button that instantly takes you places is plain wrong. Sorry for the rant, old hardcore not just WoW, but Warcraft player disillusioned by what it has become and continues to become.

I'm about as reasonable and logical as we come. I have also taken no offense to what you wrote. Factually, you couldn't possibly offend me. No one can. It's my choice to take offense or not, and I never do. I can say, regardless of your meaning, the fact of the matter is that you, blatantly, insulted anyone who ever chose to play a particular video game. If that is not an absurd notion, then I don't know what is.

If you do, actually, have an intelligent opinion about why you dislike WOW then perhaps you should rethink your method of approach. This is just an observation, nothing more. Though if you ever want your posts to be taken seriously and seek any validity of your opinion then may I recommend that you think more before you type.
