The McDonald's Analogy is right on point.  Another is that Titanic is the highest grossing film of all time.  I'd like to see some WoW fanboys argue why Titanic is the BEST movie of all time.

Before I'm called a WoW-hater, let me say that I played wow for 4 years.  Vanilla WoW was amazing.  Here's my two cents why WoW is so popular and why the playerbase enjoys the negative reputation it has earned.

Very low system requirements.  Anyone can play WoW.

Casual Friendly.   Whatever your schedule, you can play WoW.

PvE and PvP.  (I personally hate the Arena/ BG grind) but others love it.

Constant updates (Carrot on a stick approach), same progression model since Vanilla Wow (tiered gear, tier 12 now??).  There's always a new piece of gear to get.

Solo content.  It's as much as an RPG from 1 - 80 as it is an MMO RPG.  You can get to 80 without every joining a group.

Here are some reasons why old school MMO players, and WoW players who loved Vanilla Wow are starting to despise it with a passion.

Casual player can get equivalent gear as a raider,

Micro-transactions making WoW more about profit than about staying true to WoW initial design ($25 for each service)

Server/faction/name changes allow you to be a douche bag with unbridled anonimity.

Game is too easy and watered down compared to Vanilla WoW

Constant recycling of content (Cataclysm and the new LFG cross server option taking instance grind to a whole new level).

Grind. (faction grind, daily grind, badge gear grind, arena points grind, honor points grind) etc.

Vanilla WoW players are bored.  The game is essentially the same as it was 5 years ago.  It hans't evolved, if anything it has devolved and become a shell of its former self.

Why do players resent WoW influence on the MMO Market?

INSTANT GRATIFICATION.   Nothing is truly earned in WoW.  You can be fully epiced out within a week to two weeks of reaching 80, which now takes a whopping one to two weeks to accomplish.  In Vanilla WoW, it took months to get your tier 2 set from MC and Tier 3 from BWL.  Now, you can completely epic out a person through one run through naxx.

The way I see WoW and it's content patches and expansions is a CONSTANT ADDITION OF ZEROES.  Bigger, faster, stronger, over and over again until nothing you do in wow has lasting value nor any deep sense of gratification.

WoW in its current form is the game of choice for the modern ADD, me me me person in society.  Unfortunately, by catering to the least common denominator, game companies are under pressure to produce the same commercial success.

Vanillia WoW was like Gladiator, current WoW and its progeny are Alexander and Troy.

I don't care how many updates it's had. Whenever I log into it I still see the Cartoon Network. Graphics Cards can sit back and drink a Pina Colada while it's running.

Oh I played highest settings on both and still needed to take a Vivarin. You play your game then Fanboi and enjoy yourself. My New Year's resolution is that something comes along to knock this silly game right out of the water. I'm SO tired of WoW I could spew, and I've been playing MMO's since Meridian 59. :)

WOW doesn't need so much protection. It's doing fine on it's own. Zorn take a deep breathe man.

Funny. Care to name any MMO that can compete with today's single player games in terms of graphics? With Crysis (actually it's even yesterday), Fallout 3, DA:O? And if all MMOs have inferior graphics, why does it matter?

MMORPG genre is dead. Long live MMOCS (Massively Multiplayer Online Cash Shop).

I can torpedo this complete post with ease....

With a 1.2 BILLION dollars YEARLY revenu, WOW has far more than 80% of the complete income in ITS industry.(MMORPG's).

Most single games (cross platform even) come to 10 or 25 million dollars (let alone each year).

So IF you can show me a film or artist that makes 20 TIMES MORE money than the ... second most succesful in that branche well be my guest ...

The rest is pure frustration of an old player who simply played too long and now considers HIS opinion the only valid one, ... ignoring 1.2 BILLION dollars worth of PAYING players.

    FAIL all over.

Oh and btw ... WOW made much much more money than Titanic ever did....

For a video game ... that shows just HOW strong it is.

So the bigger the gap between #1 and #2 is how much "better" WoW is compared to the next MMO?  That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

It just means that it appeals to the most people, JUST LIKE MCDONALDS.  Just because a majority of people like, and just because a majority of people like it a lot more than #2, does not convert it to "the best."

WoW's revenue is a QUANTITATIVE measurement.  Whether or not it's the best game is a QUALITATIVE measurement.

Btw, Titanic grossed $1,842,879,955, #2 Lord of the Rings: Return of the King grossed, $1,119,110,941.  That's $723,769,000 less than Titanic.

So, Titanic is 64% better than Lord of the Rings.   Your argument is so idiotic that I'm going to stop responding to your posts.  I gave you too much credit.

Sigh, same old closed minded drivel from the fanboys. The usual inability to understand, much less accept, someone else's position that although a product may be making the big bucks, does not necessarily equate to a quality product which appeals to everyone or is a product that can be considered as a quality product itself, is mind numbing.

The simple act of taking a position of "I'm right and everyone else is wrong." is simply the act of a spoiled child with an inability to see beyond their own selfish needs. Learn to read and understand (not necessarily accept maybe) the argument/position of the other party and maybe your mind will become opened to new possibilities. Learn to ask a simple question, i.e. "Why ?"; Why is this guy saying this, that or the other thing ? And perhaps, this may lead you to see the world in a different light.

WoW might have huge numbers and the such, but the game is about as deep as a kiddie wade pool. Its just mindless fun that requires little to no real thinking (and dont use the whole 'hard mode' argument because its not valid to this. Harder mobs =/= deeper gameplay or required thought processes.)

BEST game in critical acclaim on the WHOLE web: 92%

MOST succesful single video game in the complete HISTORY of 30 years video gaming: 1.2 BILLION dollars per year revenu.

Just grab the web and find me another single game with that yearly amount of income :))). Cross platform : fat chance ...

And yes that income does NOT come from "free TV shows" but from PAYING players.

Curious your taste must be worse. :))))

The usual vomit spread out over mmorpg.com. How silly to ignore SUCCESS...:)))

Again, your post just doesnt lend to the argument all that well. Success is measured in sales. Subscriptions are infact a form of sales. And as most people have learned and seen throughout time is that just because something sells well does not make it 'the best'. If anything it just shows that there is a market willing to accept it as a product, regardless if its good or not.

If anything look at The Sims. Biggest selling game for the longest time and I think the most purchased game in teh last 10 years. Is it an OK game? Sure. Is it successful? Definatly. Are there people out there who find the gameplay boring? Are there people who played the game for a long time but cant stand it anymore because its the 'same old same old'? Yup.

Same goes for WoW. Yes its successful and yes it makes money. But are there people out there who grew tired of the game? Are there people who cant stomach the game anymore due to how redundant the gameplay is (no matter how many elements they borrow from games like EQ2 to keep the game fresh)? Yes. And you cant argue that people who are tired of WoW are 'lame, retarded, morons, etc' just because they dont seem to share the same fanatical love of the game as you do. Its one thing to love something, but to try to force your reasons down someone elses throat as 'facts' is pretty akin to life in the Dark Ages. Just because someone sees things differently than you might does not make them heretical people who need to be forced to see the error of their ways or face burning at the stake.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

The truth of the matter is people on this site are inherently negative from the get go.  So you have to take everything with a grain of salt.  Also, people enjoying the game for the most part, don't post here, if at all.

The game isn't bad.  It's just not challenging.  It's been watered down even more to cater to the lowest common denominator, which is basically average IQ teenagers.  Their problem solving skills are almost non existent, but their skill of blaming everybody else/making fun of everybody because they're so mediocre is pro.

Lets be honest, It never was that challenging in the first place.  There's never really been any risk vs. reward.  There's never been any taking steps back.  You can in fact bash your head against your keyboard 20 mil times and succeed in WoW by sheer repetition.  Eos.

Yes you are correct: If 'money made' is the paramount measure of 'Quality' in a product then McDonalds is the best burger ever made, the Toyota Corolla is the best car ever made, "Quotations from Chairman Mao" is the best book ever written, Thriller by the late pedophile Michael Jackson is the best Album ever created and WoW is the best game ever made.

P.S. : Before you blow your under informed (proverbial) load on my chin: the bible is not the best-selling book ever, however it is the most widely distributed, and even that is in different editions/versions. It's the junk mail of the literary world. Lovely and well worth reading junk that it is.

So WOW isnt the best game even  though it makes the most money. Finally you have come to it.

It is the most succesful game (in money making) AND has the BEST scores in critical acclaim for ANY mmorpg by far.

So it certainly meets these two criteria to succes and best MMORPG ever.

    Again no.

It meets the criteria to be 'Most Successful' but in no way meets any criteria to be 'The Best'.

Successful is easily gauged and can be proven. To be the best would require personal preferences, which CANT be proven as fact at all.

Now is it the best selling MMO? Yes.

Is it the 'Best' MMO? No.

See where your argument fails yet? No matter how many Web Stats you throw around or Revenue reports you post, it all means squat when trying to prove that the game is the 'best' mmo. Because no matter how hard you try to prove that it is, you cant. No one can for that matter. Its all subjective.

"Best" is just a word. Unless there are numbers behind it (like smb. is the best runner in the world because he set a world record) it's just an opinion also. If you don't define what it takes to be "the best", this discussion is useless.

WoW is the most financially successful MMO. That's a fact. WoW is the most praised by professional game reviewers. That's a fact. WoW has been the most played game for almost 5 years. That's a fact.

This thread makes me sad. Really sad. Years ago Blizzard was considered hands down gold to every nerd, gamer, techy, whatever tag you wanted to put on yourself. Like, every product every gamer liked. Even WoW never got any flame for its first year....but then it got mainstream.....and people had to play it for 14 hours a day.....and people call it crap now. Jeeze. I remember the day Warcraft came out on disks, and blizzard never looked better. Diablo came along and people thought  blizzard couldn't release crap. Starcraft came and entire colleges got new entertainment for years and countries developed new sports due to blizzard. But mainstream picks up on a Blizzard product and the gamers turn their back to Blizzard? Why? Because you grinded to many hours and to many days and want it to be fresh and exciting now that you've dumped over 500 hours into it? WoW isn't a bad game, its dated sure, but its not a bad game. People used mass amounts of addons and raged through its leveling content, I guess you are burnt out. I completely understand people that got caught up in the over expectations of raids nowadays, but unfortunetly that's more on the player base then anything. Don't hate the game, hate yourself for not taking a break or, better yet, for being obsessed with a g.a.m.e. .

    *insert flame here*

So you can prove that WoW is a low quality game, don't you? Or even better, maybe you actually know some product that appeals to everyone?

The simple act of taking a position of "I'm right and everyone else is wrong." is simply the act of a spoiled child with an inability to see beyond their own selfish needs.

I think you just described a typical WoW hater here. Thanks.

Ahahahaha,   sigh, see what I mean.

Sorry Wowfan1996, been there seen it done that. Not gonna waste my time arguing with you. Suffice to say that you are one of those who will never be able to see the views of another person much less accept it. Have fun in your little closet of a life.

What facts are behind "WoW is bad" opinion?

Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
