Damnit Chieften.....Wow has 10 mill subs still in 2010. I just blew coke all over my keyboard, and now you owe me another.. LOL....you must be joking.
Actually he is off, its closer to 11million now.
Are you sure? He says 10, you say 11 and ive heard 12 and 13. I think you guys just type in what ever number you pull out of , whatever you pull it out of.

when half of wow's sub numbers were from china (which didn't even account for 10% of their revenue) and they lost all business there, i highly doubt it would be 10 million let alone 5 but who knows, they won't release sub numbers for many reasons.
... you know, its not really going to help, whether you like it, or hate it, WOW really is that popular. just because the game you like isnt as popular, doesnt mean its not as good, in fact probability is, a lot of the WOW players probably never even heard of it.. SOE have never really done much about advertising their products, not that it would help titles like EQ, (either of them!) but when Blizzard are using celebrities like Ozzy Osbourne, TV commercials, the whole 9 yards etc. Then you have to admit, that its going to get noticed, and while WOW might not have the hardcore appeal of some other games, it does however, have the 'mass appeal' that makes it very playable, even if you've never touched a fantasy rpg before, let alone an MMO.
You know, I just shake my head at some people. If in Dec 08 WoW had 11.5 Million people playing there game, and it "declined" somewhat over the past year, and even if they lost China. Thats still probably about 3.5-5 Million fu**ing people playing their game. Being themost financially successful MMO in the past decade is something to be proud of also. WoW made the MMO market expand.
Im speaking in a realistic view here, not fanboying it up, as I havent played WoW in quite a while. but still.
Thats still about 5 million people. These WoW is dying, WoW is declining, etc etc. Its still probably the biggest MMO population wise period. I guess when your the biggest and baddest any SLIGHT change in your sub numbers, of which are entirely speculatory by anyone other then themselves, gets BIG news.....

11.5 to 3.5 is more than a slight decline.
link please. or are you using the ESP method of determining subs these days (wiji board divination notwithstanding that is!)
Even so though, 3.5 Million is MORE than successful. Yes they are mainstream and require much more revenue than they did in 04, but many MMO's would see even 250k to 500k successful. Its still quite a bit of money for a development company.

I don't think you understand. I don't care about wow at all. I just don't understand how only here in the states are people still mentioning a 5 year old game. It's time to move on. A lot of people seem to be disgusted and tired of the game yet they still talk about it in every single thread. I'm just giving my opinion, that wow does not and I can say this with conviction, they don't have near 10 million players. How do I know that? Studying the market place and using common sense. If you can prove me wrong, then sure. Doesn't bother me at all. I never payed to play wow ever, I actually played someone else's account when they were about to throw it away so I have no attachment whatsoever to this game. Just tired of reading all the bullshit the marketing team spewed that many fanboys over use such as, "nothing can kill wow, except wow". wtf?

Aye, agree here.
Everything starts to decline eventually over time, and WoW isnt immune to that trend. But truth is it is still the most popular MMO to date and will be for quite some time to come. They could drop to 3 million consecutive players world wide and stay at that level for the next 5 to 10 years and still not be 'dying'.
And I am no fanboy of WoW either. No matter what 'new' feature they add the game is still WoW and I have grown out of it. But even I cannot ignore the fact that it is the monster that it is, and can even agree that it will be that monster for a long time.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Given your well known Hatred for all things Blizzard, i can well imagine thats exactly how you get your figures. and given also that i havent quoted any myself, but instead said that the game was well advertised (surely your not disputing that?) you know, have to wonder why it is, that when people like a certain game, then they feel that they automatically have to hate other games in the same genre, why not just say you prefer one game to another rather than the BS that seems to be the lowest common denominator.

The guy isnt hating. Hes just telling me its more of a slight decline than i say it is. I dont flack him for it, he has his opinion. Dont bash the guy for having such a different opinion than your own. I am merely commenting on the fact that so many people have this agenda and or obsession with the fact their sub numbers are not quite what they were, have changed grown declined etc, that even with the losses people speculate, EVEN 2 million people, and this is nothing official its an example, would be a large sum of cash for a game company.

I thought you were disputing numbers but now I see its more about me not liking wow. Yes its well advertised. Yes it has the most subs, whatever that number may be at this time. Whatever the number is will change with the next post which reasons that sub numbers make it a good game. In the meantime we are to accept whatever is thrown out? Anyone being honest knows that the lack of numbers being released by Blizz isnt because they have increased subscriptions. If that were the case it would be in bold numbers across all media outlets.
Anyone else notice it? It just doesnt seem right. I cant put my finger on it... its sorta like walking into your livingroom and getting that feeling that something is out of place long before you realize a lamp is missing...
Man, its gonna irk me now...

Yea, you mean the fake numbers guy. Posts links that eventually contradicts everything he says.
Of course they will sooner or later. The real difference was the fact that EQ released a lot more expansions that made the old content useless and making it harder to get new players into the game. All other MMOs including Wow is doing the same thing.
SOE patched in a whole lot of stuff, just check it up. Here is EQs expansions in the years we are talking: The Ruins of Kunark (March 2000)
The Scars of Velious (December 2000)
The Shadows of Luclin (December 2001)
The Planes of Power (October 2002)
The Legacy of Ykesha (February 2003)
Lost Dungeons of Norrath (September 2003)
Gates of Discord (February 2004)
Omens of War (September 2004)
Dragons of Norrath (February 2005)
Depths of Darkhollow (September 2005) I would say that is a whole load of content, Blizzard have only released 2 expansions in the same time, 3 if you count the upcoming one. My theory is that any MMO just can handle so many expansions and raising of the levelcap.
They were constantly throwing out new content instead of fixing their deeply flawed game. Out of all those expacs I may have gotten to see 40% of the content that I paid for. Maybe less.
GoD and OoW should have been the expacs that brought EQ up to date but instead drove players away. It had become clear at that point that most of the content was designed for raiders and everybody else was just footing the bill.

Exactly. SOE is so bad with pumping out expansions that players organized a boycott and soe was forced into double time damage control.
There is a reason that smedly and soe have to continually promise they will refocus on quality. Year after year they keep repeating it.
Did they learn from the 2004 boycott that led to the Guild summit where they gushed over players that they would improve quality and fix the game first, no. 20072008
One company has focused on pushing out quantity of content expansions to maximize profits. The result was an eroded player base, server mergers and a reputation for a lack of quality.
Another company has focused on quality of content expansions. While making less overall money from box sales, it has caused massive increases in player population and additional servers to be added to the game.
I agree with the conclusion that an mmo can only handle so many expansions at a time and level increases before it makes itself unfriendly to new players, but the rate at which eq pushed out garbage it also made itself unfriendly to existing players.

WoW is just an instanced game for dumb players who couldn't handle EQ. They needed content they could never wipe on, and a meaningless instanced PVP environment because they couldn't handle World PVP. I don't know what else to say. It's popular because it's dumbed down and easy and there are a lot of giveaways. If that isn't obvious you haven't played WoW obviously

You're the ignorant one, who doesn't know what the difference is between an MMORPG and a game with instances. What next? Diablo 2 is an MMORPG too?
There is a penalty for dying in PvE? What is it? Durability loss when repair costs are minimal? It used to be a penalty, back when WoW wasn't handing out Welfare Checks (Gold) to everyone for doing anything. If you do one daily quest that's enough gold to wipe all day in an instance.. That's not a penalty
If Diablo2 has a huge world that supports thousands of simultaneous characters in a huge world with instances then yes it will be an MMO. The repair bill depends on your gear. I'd like to see how long your gear would last wiping all day in an instance doing only 1 daily quest to cover the costs. Repair bills can get over 100gold easily while quests only put out a 10th of that.

Only took a quick google search but if you are really that lazy: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6202679.html?sid=6202679?=rss&subj=6202679 Last known accurate numbers. May have gone up or down from that number. May have gone up or down since then? Isnt that the point that was being discussed? Brilliant.
No, no it is not.

I underlined the key parts of the previous posts for you so you can keep track of which conversation is about what. Hope it helps.
No, the original conversation had to do with comparing EQs and WoWs successes. You derailed the thread into something else. Of course this is against the forum rules and you and Letsinod have already been reported for going so.

Oh, an easy game has a lot of people playing it, what a shocker. You do know that Maple Story has more people playing it than WoW, right? So by your logic I guess Maple Story > WoW There are a lot of shitty games with lots of people playing it though Maple Story only counts registered accounts. This is well known. You are purposely trying to spread misinformation.
Maple Story claims 10 million subscribers in North America but the number of concurrent players is 70,000.
So, you can hate on WoW all you want but theres no reason to lie.

Every world zone in WoW is a useless lobby zone. That doesn't make it an MMORPG. When will they put actual PVE or PVP content into World Zones? Oh wait they phased it out so people like you could collect welfare epics and not have to compete with other players on the same server.
Repair costs is not a penalty. As I've said you can wipe all day in an instance and have no problem with repair costs.
Everquest is an MMORPG, because they did not instance content. WoW is not an MMORPG, because any zone worth going to is instanced.
It's not a lobby because you can interact and play together in that world. If the only thing you could do was talk than it would be a lobby. But players are able to do so much more in the world. There is actually some world PvPvE content, the faction leader kills are a popular one depending on the server.
instancing is just one mechanic, it wont define a games genre. Saying so is retarded.

Just tired of reading all the bullshit the marketing team spewed that many fanboys over use such as, "nothing can kill wow, except wow". wtf?
11.5 to 3.5 is more than a slight decline.
link please. or are you using the ESP method of determining subs these days (wiji board divination notwithstanding that is!)
Im just going by the example slimfrog used. Why dont you get us a link? Oh thats right, Blizzard hasnt released any numbers. So go back to using the , pull them out your ass method.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Be realistic. Thats all.

You know....
Something is missing in this thread...

That just about shows your ignorance on the subject...

Oh, an easy game has a lot of people playing it, what a shocker.
You do know that Maple Story has more people playing it than WoW, right? So by your logic I guess Maple Story > WoW
There are a lot of shitty games with lots of people playing it though
There you go making stuff up again. lol. Never said more people playing makes it better. Just said that more people are playing it. Sure, some people may think that Maple Story is the best game evar if that's what your into. But that's not what I've said.

Maple Story only counts registered accounts. This is well known. You are purposely trying to spread misinformation.
Maple Story claims 10 million subscribers in North America but the number of concurrent players is 70,000.
So, you can hate on WoW all you want but theres no reason to lie.
