These players are present in pretty much every game, defending whatever characteristic most people mention when they say the game is bad. It happens to be the huge PvE grind for Darkfall. They don't defend it for logical reasons they only defend it because they feel the need to support the game that they have invested in, which is why most of the 5 or so people who are always defending the grind on these forums are vets. If I have killed 20k mobs, of course I would be telling every person crying about the huge PvE grind to suck it up. These are usually the people left standing around after the game has died and there's no population left. In darkfall's case there will be a small group of players left standing around telling each other "There's no huge PvE grind" over and over and over again.
If you're playing this game how the hell do you have so much time to expend repeating the same thing over and over again in every Darkfall thread. You've got some heavy grinding to do, so get out there and grind baby grind.
Thankfully darkfall is designed so that I don't even have to play it to be advancing my character. Now that you reminded me of the heavy grinding I might have to spend some more time on the forums recuperating before I can play again. Thanks
I also very like the idea of the long progression because banned aholes have a hard time catching up again with an alt in case their main is banned. Generelly Darkfall has good protection against too many alts and that long progression is part of it what makes me happy.

+1 this coming from someone that would like to try it but WILL NOT sit through a pve grind as such. If they took some of the pve grind out, cracked down on hackers and botters I would be interested in trying the game. Til these 2 things are addressed I'd imagine many will take the same stance. Tbh I get the impression that many of the vets simply want to protect their advantage/leverage or whatever else you want to call it. Think about what the quoted post says "more pvp in a pvp game" how can that be bad? Never understood how hardcore pvpers would defend a bunk pve grind that isn't even hiden.
Most pvpers don`t support the grind in darkfall, because we can see it`s killing the game we like. We want more player, more pvp and more fun. We simply want less pve and more pvp
-If we liked the grind, would we have macroed everytime we got the chance?
-Would Xipher abuse a mob like the hivequeen if he liked the grind?
-Would Whargoul support the grind if he didn`t live on a safe island?
-Would Agricola support the grind if he couldn`t play 12-16 hour a day?
The grind supporters are the worst enemy a game like Darkfall can have. They are killing the game from inside. I do belive they like Darkfall, but it`s sad they can`t see outside their little box. And new players do like darkfall, atleast in the start. You can see it in the post from new players like Holdenhamlet. His dream is to make a police clan, but he will soon quit like the rest of the new players. The fucking grind is making 90% of the new players leave.
I have to go before I nerdrage again :P
I had to quote this for truth, especially the red. It's sad, because I KNOW people like Xipher, Wharg0ul, and Agricola, do indeed love this game, but they have to understand that I and so many others, new players and veterans alike, love this game too and want to see it succeed, but we realize that all the grind is doing is hurting the game.
If you're going to be able to handle free for all, full loot PvP than you're more than likely going to love Darkfall in the beginning. Everyone starts off the same, they enter the game, get frustrated for the first 30 minutes or so, and when they finally realize what they're doing they realize that they found quite a gem. Problem is that in my honest opinion, once the initial love wears off, people simply get burnt out from the grind. I've seen it happen with my friends, I've seen it happen to guildmates, and I've certainly seen it discussed on this forum and over at the official forum.
It's always the same, people quit because they get burnt out from the grind. Sure, there are plenty of others reasons why people quit, but I honestly believe that the people that quit that love free for all, full loot PvP, the kind of people we want in Darkfall, mostly quit because they get burnt out of the grind, and I do think that our current population would be a lot higher if they did something to address it.
In my opinion two things need to happen:
The first is that much more content and "fluff" needs to be added into the game so that the grind isn't so intolerable and so "out in the open". Right now, we have grinding mobs for hours upon hours on end, or harvesting for hours upon hours on end to increase our stats and skills. Sure, you can certainly go out PvPing and gain skills that way, but at the rate you'd increase doing that, you wouldn't get anywhere until YEARS of playing! The grind has to be masked somehow and made more fun, instead of how unbelievably long, tedious, and repetitive it is now. This is something that I hope we can all agree on.
The second is that I think stats need to be readdressed either in how they affect your character (like non-linear stat benefit gain) or how you increase them (increased stat gains doing certain actions, etc). This is pretty self explanatory and I won't go into too much detail since I've already discussed this in detail.
As someone who has been here since EU-1 launch and who only plays Darkfall for his PC gaming experience, I want this game to succeed like EVE has, and I want our population to flourish and grow, and I honestly believe that the grind is doing absolutely nothing but deterring that from happening.
I totally agree Kasmos. Starting to wonder if AV will ever actually change the grind though... You would think after about 20,000 threads related to this, they would have done something already. This whole debate may be a waste of time.
I disagree with this sentament, seeing as they've already changed the grind once.

They dont even make a spotlight about the grind in their official forum. They just ignore the case totally. When there is a new girl gamer coming to play dakrfall, they spotlight the girl(HEY guys, an hot girl is playing darkfall and he is blogging about it. Lets read what that girl think about DF YAY) So dumb.
Grind as a word has been taken out of context and used as an alarmist position in any game for some-time now. It isn't a new concept that isolates progressive character development and achievement to Darkfall. It is in any game you play, even the unlocks for progressively improved items and access to new features in the Battlefield series.
Magic in Darkfall might be the most challenging to level and progress through skill with, but even with that, If there was a game where character progression of skills is easily attainable with little effort over-time, I've found Darkfall is an example of a game that does it well.

Honestly, I just wish they'd come out and take a stance one way or the other. If they think the grind and how you go about grinding is fine as is, they should say so like they did with the skill cap issue, and if they have something in the works to address it on the other hand, they should let us know as well.
You don't see me arguing for a soft cap and skill decay anymore because they flat out took a stance against anything of the sort. Do I still think a skill cap would do wonders for Darkfall? Yes, I do, but I also think that this specialization system, if they keep adding more and working on it, will be a reasonable compromise.
Now they just need to do the same in regards to the grind. If they think it's fine as is and don't have any changes planned in the future, I'll accept it for what it is. I won't agree with them, but I'll place my faith in them that they know what they're doing like I have in regards to the specialization system. They just need to say something, because the issue is probably the most talked about thing on both this and the official forums.
I agree... I would appreciate some sort of official word regarding this one way or the other. At least then maybe the debate might die down a bit.
AV has given more than official word on this matter, they already addressed it and made the grind much faster. People are still bitching though. Who's to say that if they changed it again to make it even easier, that people won't still be bitching. The game has been slowly growing for some time, and I don't think they want to alienate their current playerbase or the new crop of people joining every month.
Besides, I've been listening to a small minority of people complaining about this game for many, many years. These people have helped keep this game hyped in a way that is almost unimaginable. Why would AV want the debate to "die down a bit"? It's been working great for them.

If you are going to quit because f the grind just quit. AV shouldn't say one way or the other because 1) the grind really isn't that bad (save spell chanting and melee mastery), and 2) taking a stance means losing players before its implemented.

Where did I say I was going to quit because of the grind?
And who the hell would quit if Aventurine said, "We have plans to change the way stats affect your character" or "We have plans to change how stat gain is going to work" or even, on the flip side, "We think stat gain and how stats affect your character is fine as is and don't have any plans to change it".
That's all I'm asking for, like they took a stance on the skill cap issue. Otherwise, this topic will never die.
I would compare Darkfall Online's grind to that of an Asian grind MMORPGs. What's worse is your grinding forever on your character because there is no skill limit especially since its a PvP only game. The PvP experience is sub-par at best if you ever get to that point. This leads me to say that once you get to that point you will have so much time dedicated to this game that you will not say anything bad about it or its PvP...sadly.
Somebody needs to bring back a better version of Shadowbane. Grinding should never be an issue in a PvP game.

You haven't played an asain grinder if you think dfo can even compare to that level; aion and L2 have worse grinds than dfo. Heres a tip, stop trying to level everything.

I would guess Aion is a 1000 times faster than DF. I honestly can`t think of a more boring grind than DF, in Aion you can atleast make a bot. I have a medium char, and are working on a few things. I want to get the last few points in spell chanting, necromancy, the inferno spell to 75+ and the last 8 point to int 75. I got money, regs, mats and gear. My bank is FULL. All I need are the gains. This is my day.
Walk up to a medium difficulty fast spawning mob. You know it is suppose to be fast gain when you hit NPCs.
-Eat food, cast inferno, mana blast, cursed bolt x2 and health to mana x2
-rince and repeat for two hour
The gains are terrible slow and I don`t loot. How can anything have a worse grind than that?

I have to call BS on this. I played L2 for a long time and I got close to max level. It was a huge grind yes, but I think the grind in DFO is considerably worse. At least that is how it felt to me...
I was able to stick out the grind in L2 and not give up because it didn't feel like I was never going to reach end game. The grind was so bad in DFO that I felt like it was futile to even try after about 3 months. Its like each different skill set you train in DFO takes as long as an entire level grind in other games. I know many disagree with me, but that was my perception.

If you're talking about Pre-June/July expansion, yeah the grind was possibly the worse I've seen. But since that expansion, it's VERY EASY to raise skills (especially magic). The real grind that many users argue about is the stat grind, which I somewhat agree to. But skill grind? It's very easy.
I was referring more to a combination of the two. Since you can't really be competitive with low stats and you also need multiple skills leveled all the way up. All of those things in combination are still worse than the grinds in most other games even after the changes they made to skill gains. I do agree that it is much easier than it used to be though...

They just need to say something, because the issue is probably the most talked about thing on both this and the official forums.

I found Darkfall very grindy. Didn't capture my attention very long because of the grind.

You haven;t even made it to top abyss yet. You haven't reached the grind in Aion, have fun grinding out 134895737mobs to raise 2 ranks and then dying and losing both

Maybe you should focus train?
