You've seen it. Does tjhe combat look like fun?
The smuggler runs into green spots for cover, the jedi swings his light saber, the bounty hunter has a big blaster, etc.
Does it look like fun, or not so fun?

I think it looks like fun.

Personally, it looks like the same old same old. Not that it's particularly a bad thing... just not particularly a good thing, either. The animations look pretty clunky and melee doesn't "click" as well as it could (then again, the same could be said for all current MMOs). Only thing I particularly dislike are classes like the Trooper and Bounty Hunter just standing around shooting in the middle of the open. Sure, they have armor, and I understand it from a gameplay standpoint, but it's still ridiculous. It seems odd to make cover available only to the smuggler and agent. It would be more logical for all classes, or at least all the ranged classes, to have the functionality. It also seems horribly rigid and situational.
In any case, it's difficult to judge the combat, since everything we've seen so far is low-level stuff with limited amounts of abilities. But in any case, I think some work could be made to the animations to keep everything smooth. In general, it all just feels too clunky.
If only SW:TOR could be this epic...
If you find the combat in KoTOR and Dragon Age fun, then yes. Both seemed far too close to the EQ-standard for me though, even as single-player games. I'm sitting there playing DA going "this is WoW with a pause button" within hours of playing it. The Witcher used the same engine and I praise it for doing *something* else with it by making combat based on timed clicks. As for SW:TOR, I expect Bioware to recycle the same system they've been using for years, even if it's not a WoW-clone in some peoples eyes, it's a Bioware clone (coining the term from now on).
I really hope the "intense hotbar watching action" can do something special, because a lot of people are over it, even without realising it just yet.

Looks pretty fun but like Douhk said, it's nothing new. I am ok with that though because I am no fan of FPS and that it is in the Starwars universe with the same old look is ok for me. I really hope they make the game deep with crafting, exploration, politics, war and so on. I am afraid that they are spending too much time doing every single quest with depth as a single player game. It's good of course as long as the rest doesn't have to suffer.
I respect your opinion, but I don't see anything "clunky" about the animations.
I don't know what you mean that ALL mmorpgs are 'clunky".
that would seem to mean that NONE are clunky, since I would think you compare them to each other.
You mean compared to a first person shooter animations?
Even so, I just don't see the "clunkiness". Perhaps I'm just not that detail orientated about animations I don't know.
Honestly it doesn't really look any more "fun" then other MMO combat to me right now. The cover system intrigues me. Fun in combat to me is action based combat, whether it be FPS style, or third person. The idea of no auto attack is also a great idea.. but in many of the videos, its a run, and click until dead situation. I feel that the cover system can breathe some strategy into the gameplay.
As for the animations.. I have to say, they look more fluid then most other games I've seen on the market. The recent inquisitor animation they released with the lightning was absolutely amazing to me.. I was very impressed to see that kind of animation in an MMO.
To me it doesn't really look "fun" per se. That doesn't mean it won't be fun... but when I watch basketball.. it doesn't really look fun either, but I have a lot of fun playing it.
Exactly how I feel about it. Saved me the effort in explaining.
At a pre-beta stage? It doesn't "look" fun, but it does sound fun. Especially the Trooper, which will be my main.
i dont know wtf you think it should be like, you have to limit it somewhat if you want to appeal to people who do not have gaming computers.
As long as it is smooth, responsive and you dont walk like a brick turd, that's the most you can hope for.
While the mechanics of SW:ToR may feel like most other MMO's, the mob AI will be on the next level and make PvE combat feel a lot more alive then in current MMO's.

I really did not see enough to be able to form any criticism or praise. It looked ok i guess,i am not a ig fan of pew pew gun fire though.I like to use my fave games to compare the same aspects and in this case i use UT.In UT i was spoiled by the dynamic Shock rifle,it is much more intriguing than any pew pew fire. Also loading up a bunch of rockets to spam is more visual and exciting.I think over all i was just spoiled by an amazing weapon system. In SWTOR it looks like a fast weilding laser sword that really has no special animation or effects or multi combat mode that i can see.I saw the usual boring pewpew laser guns, again nothing special just some cheap texture animation.
So i guess it would be nice to see some creativity in the weapons, other than what you would expect to see.As it is,it sort of looks like a button mashing spam fest to witch the guy says it is suppose to be a FAST type action.Well fast is fine but you stil lneed some excitement and creativity, just allowing me to swing my laser sabre repeatedly woudl get umm boring?
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Have u watched the movie orp layed the other games of star wars when the lightsaber fighters jum around move forward and back and make little twirls? But in this game u just stand still and choose form a list of moves 2 do. can't even defend that well. The ranged are alright. But they don't really have any thnig special about them. Unluicke Final fantasy and Guild wars 2 wich are a mix of medieval fantasy- Drak fantasy- Steampunk- and random cool weapons and modern and futuristic machines. Swtor has the oppertunity to do all of these because it is years before the movies. But yet, nothing. The combat is just 2 stiff for a star wars game. It looks like their feet are stuck to the ground.
SO no the combat doesn't look fun it looks as boring as any other past MMO and looks like Guild wars except withought random lights flashing evreywhere.
I think it looks very MMORPG-standard. Very ordinary.
They had a chance to be true to the IP, and offer something different and faster-paced, but went with the standard 'hit something 6 or 7 times before it drops' combat. Disappointing. It won't feel like Star Wars. It will feel like WoW with SF graphics.

We were asked to give our opinions. Presumably that means positive OR negative.
I CAN hope for better than 'more of the same'.
The only features (besides 'cover' which only works for 2 classes) that set SWTOR apart are neutral, at best.
1 - DEEP solo campaign (which is HARMFUL to an MMORPG)
2 - HEAVY voice-over content (which is a misdirection of resources)

Got any evidence for that claim?

Other games use smart AI for npc, so this is nothing new to the industry.. Sorry Bioware fans, but this isn't a first in MMO games.
As for the combat, it looks like a cakewalk easier then WoW, with the same button mashing tactics.. I actually enjoyed Aion's combat a lot more. I liked having the tiered combat moves and timing.. It's a shame the game felt like a PvP grind after 20th level or so.. Just wasn't my gig.. I'm waiting for a MMO that has combat that is party dependant similar to EQ2.. and maybe toss in some LoTRO on the side.. There we go.. merge Aion, EQ2 and LoTRO into one combat system and I would be in heaven.. IF they use the right parts from each..
I chuckle when people want 'combat closer to the IP' LOL. If they had that, anytime you're hit with a light saber you would either die or lose a member... not fun.
I prefer a slower pace, specially better for group dynamic combat. I want a group of 3 being more than 3 people 'soloing together', which is all you'll get if combat is too fast paced.
That's a very good point wolfing. I don't mind a faster pace to the combat, but I don't want a FPS either. I doubt we'll ever have a game where it is completely realistic because then you would have people going down on one shot or limbs hacked off. I think the combat looks fun. It's nothing groundbreaking, but I'm really not one to quivel over such minor minutie.

That's why you design a different combat system - where (just like the movie) most shots are near-misses and only a kill or severe wound is portrayed as a hit. I guess different character graphics are enough for you to make it feel like Star Wars, but I prefer a game to play like Star Wars, rather than a reskinned WoW. Enjoy your gear grind.

No MMO has these features and implementing it to make you happy isn't really on the agenda. Its gotten to the point where most of your posts just go out of the way to bring down the profile of every game imaginable. It would really bum be out if I took you seriously, but most of the time you are way off base as far as supposed features that I can chalk it up to misinformation.
The combat seems pretty on par with... well I should say, especially with, the KOTOR games, which seems reasonable seeing as how thats where the title originated from.
riiiight, so I guess it's more fun like this...
"You jump and miss"
"Darth Spaguetti swings and misses"
"You roll and miss"
"Darth Spaguetti shoots and misses"
(25 seconds later)
"Darth Spaguetti swings and hits, you die"
I don't think so. Incidentally, I think I remember a discussion like this in SWG beta, where it was like you mentioned, lots and lots of misses, but when something hit, it was painful. Testers almost universally hated it and they changed it (or was it in another game? don't remember)
That's what SWG combat was like and I HATED it. I'd be hunting a jedi, I have the target which is standing still in my sights, I do sniper shot and somehow I miss. Then naturally he's on me in a second and I'm dead within a few seconds. One of many reasons why people switched to jedi in that game. No thank you.

I think the combat looks like a lot of fun in this game. It seems very fast paced and I like the fact that we will be facing multiple opponents more often than not. Hopefully it will spice things up a bit!
It sounds like that game had some serious balance issues. Why did you miss? How was he on you in a second? How imbalanced would it be if you had automatic success every time you did a sniper shot?
Just because that game didn't get it right, doesn't mean the concept is flawed.
Having to hit someone five or six times with a light sabre or blaster won't FEEL like Star Wars - just like STO's ground combat doesn't FEEL like Trek.

How about sticking to the topic - rather than making personal attacks? This is a thread asking what people think of the combat system. Feel free to say why you like it, but don't attack those who want something better.

That sounds a lot more exciting than swapping hits for the same amount of time - waiting for a couple of crits in a row.
