Well it depends for me. I don't mind animated films and such, nor do I overly mind a decent anime (By that I mean something along the lines of Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle). I've never had much of any interest in playing in a cartoony or anime style world, though I would if the gameplay was good enough and the graphics weren't to out there. .
Now I will completely write it off if it's basically the equivalent of a Japanese Stripperella. The big boobs and every chick being some weak and sobbing thing just doesn't do it for me. If it makes you feel better I don't assume this is just anime/manga, I treat the US animated films that do this the same way.
Anime/Manga is the same as its US counter parts. For the most part it's aimed at teenage boys, less often you get the more adult oriented ones (No I don't mean ones with sex or nudity, that again is made more for teens) and family ones.
The female and males are all weak sobbing things in Anime. HAHAHAH!
This is true lol, I saw one where the lead toon looked like a member the band Hanson lol.
I like anime and manga when I think it’s done well. I do get irritated when people try to tell me how Naruto’s artwork is better than the ceiling of the Sistine but I’m not averse to anime aesthetics in general.
But there are some things that I really don’t find visually appealing in games and often, those are things that eastern designers (and animators and mangaka) seem to love. I look over at Aion and I see really gaudy, impractical and often ugly armour that doesn’t look right on the character’s model. I look to TERA and I see the most hilarious, overly detailed and yet stupidly revealing armour sets with character models that just look plastic and move so strangely. There’s a special place in hell for Tetsuya Nomura’s belt and buckle (and Gackt) fetish.
I also don't really like the look of Master Chief and I'd take Dante over Kratos any day . -shrugs-

Art style has never stopped me from trying a game or liking a game. I can't say that I was all that thrilled with the artwork in Killer 7, but I still played it and found some interesting gameplay in it.
Ditto for Animal Crossing.....
Unless the artwork is so offensive that I can't bear to look at it -- think about the graphics equivalent of the movie Cannibal Holocaust -- I'll play it. If the game is solid then I will play it.
Most of the folks that go off about "cartoony" graphics just give me the impression that they would pass on a game titled "Barbie's Topless Trampoline Adventure" just because it has Barbie in the title and a pink box. If you don't get why that would be a bad thing, read the title again....
Actually I like both the cannibal holocaust and the killer 7 graphix better than anime.. I think it is a matter of preference.
I play games to enjoy them, and if I am irritated just looking at it, I can;t enjoy it. Anime irritates me, I think Naruto is an emo cry baby. Is that bad? I have an overwhelming feeling of irritation when seeing that style. But I have the same feeling with the color yellow.. LOL
In other words, examples of what anime really is rather than what corporate America has cleaned up for the kiddies.
Not that western animation doesn't have it's share of graphic films too. But here in the West we tend to put all animation into a cartoon ghetto. The aversion to "cartoon" artwork in games is one half insecurity about being percieved as immature and one half insecurity about being seen as less than macho.

Not everyone falls into neat little 'masculine' and 'feminine' categories, not every aesthetic or art style can be classified as 'macho' or 'girly'.

This is a prime example of " I'm going to cry eyes". This irritates me. No I do not consider that feminine, I consider that emo art. I dislike the eyes, the face shape, and the ears, but mostly the eyes and head shape. LOL to me it does not look femine, it just looks stupid.

There are quite a few more but I think that is a fairly wide variety; drama, comedy and sci-fi.

I think the OP is reading too much into things.Wow is cartoony and have 4 million western players, Manga and anime is extremely popular in the west. Crappy games however isn't no matter of the art style. There are some people who only likes a certain art style and that is fine but I have hard to believe it has anything to do with sexual preferences.

Most of what popped up is very Anime/Manga-ish lol.
Well, if you take the original version of "emo" rather than what it is ridiculed as, then I suppose "emotional art" is somewhat fitting for a good bit. "Anime" is somewhat broad, but a lot of its techniques can be used to successfully highlight and demonstrate emotional states very, very well. Bigger eyes are more expressive not just of sadness, but many other things as well for instance.
I think the offsetting feeling comes more from the term "cartoony" when describing all hand-drawn art styles. Cartoony makes it sound like it's geared toward kids. I feel games like Darksiders, Borderlands, GW 2, Team Fortress, Madworld, Guilty Gears, Castlevania: SoTN and the lot are considered to me graphic novel styles. And games like Batman: AA, CoD, Halo, AoC, Rift and Aion have a rendered feel to them (kinda like the old Killer Instinct arcade game). Lastly I feel games like Pokemon, Mario, Sonic, FreeRealms, Wizards 101, Hello Kitty Online and Maple Story are cartoony in their delivery of art style, because to me those games could very well be a Saturday morning cartoon in their own rights.
I tend to correct this mistake that 90% of the people on these boards tend to do when they refer all hand-drawn styles as cartoony. I mean would you consider the works of famous painters cartoony just because they were hand-drawn? And just to be clear, for me:
What I cannot understand how feminine translates into a " weak little girl". That is NOt feminine, that is degrading.
Boobs are Not degrading, I have no issue with Boobs, I have nice ones for real, so I would expect my character to have some as well, otherwise that would just be weird to me. Lack of boobs would be masculine.
This appears feminine to me:
This is just awkward and weird. Not even good art and lacking talent .It is distorted and doesn;t even look like a person:
This is a prime example of " I'm going to cry eyes". This irritates me. No I do not consider that feminine, I consider that emo art. I dislike the eyes, the face shape, and the ears, but mostly the eyes and head shape. LOL to me it does not look femine, it just looks stupid.
Anime is a pretty broad term. Some look more realistic than others. And some anime might be Emo but a lot of it isn't. Here is a lady from "Black lagoon"

I still feel that is lacking detail. Yes, it is more tolerable than most, but the head still seems weird. A different head and I might be able to stand it. LOL It is the facial details that annoy me.
Just like you don't mind cartoony graphics, there are others who do. Always expect in life, that if you feel one way, somewhere out there exists a person who feels differently.
HOW DARE YOU.
This ^^^^^ made me giggle like a girl! Oh wait....nvm....I AM a girl.
Okay, so....I'm female, but I'm also a lesbian (no not the butchy flannel shirts and Birkenstocks with white socks kind), just a very ordinary looking 47 year old mom-looking type, I guess. heh
Anywhoozle....
I LOVE cartoony graphics of certain styles. However....I loathe anime. To me, anime looks like something drawn either by and for grade schoolers or perverts that find children attractive. That's just my own personal preferences though. Anime has a real pedophile look to it....to me.....and I just don't dig that. Seriously....I make no such judgment on people that like it, I'm just saying what kind of "vibe" it has for me.
WoW-cartoony is fine (I actually loved the graphics in that game)....Mabinogi-cartoony is not. (for me)
But if we're talking about PREFERRED style of graphics over all....then I would have to say I prefer more pseudo-realism along the lines of Guild Wars....kind of a mixture of cartoony and real. EQ2 isn't bad either, but maybe tries a bit too hard to be more "plastic-real," instead of cartoon real like GW. Perfect World is another good example of graphics I like, and eevn LotRO....very real looking environments with more cartoon-like characters. Am I makin' sense?
So I guess my tastes are very....specific. Although I will play games with any kind of graphics EXCEPT anime.
EDIT: OHHHHH....and the very stylized look of BORDERLANDS??? LOVE LOVE LOVE that.

I think it is mostly the angle of the lady, but my point was that Anime is more or less all animated movies from Japan (and in some cases, south Korea). So it is the same like saying Swamp Bob and Family guy has the same art style too because they are animated shows from the US.
Some anime is breath taking, others really simple or plain ugly. Just used the lady from Black lagoon for comparsion with your pictures and because I like Black lagoon, great Anime/manga about a gang of mercenaries working for the Russian mob.

I love eastern art style. I have grown up with PS and PS2 (I'm 20 right now) and all of its famous JRPGs (suikoden, breath of fire, the massive final fantasy and many more) and their interesting storylines. I know people in their 30's that are watching animes a lot and 2 years ago I would personally make fun of them. Now, I'm hooked and I can see why. With that said, nowadays this kind of art style in a game is always a plus for me.

This thread came with a built in sense of humor. I approve.
I actually like both the Eastern and Western graphics styles (realistic/anime-ish, if you will). What kills me is the personality of most females in Eastern games. The whole anime-esque attitude is brutal to me.
Slightly on topic. One of the first things that popped out about Rift to me was the small breasts portraited on their site.

Do they have options to make it more like your own body type? I do not mind if people want to customize their character to their own body type in reality, but I do not like being forced into an odd looking shape to me. But then again, I am sure they feel the same way about their body type, is also why I think there should be options for both. I think Shoulder/ boob/ waist/ hips slider bars are a good thing. Women are not all built the same way.

How does disliking anime make her butch?

Cartoony = humorous + hand-drawn style aka saturday morning cartoons
Graphic novel-like = serious + hand-drawn style aka western comics

What I cannot understand how feminine translates into a " weak little girl". That is NOt feminine, that is degrading.
Boobs are Not degrading, I have no issue with Boobs, I have nice ones for real, so I would expect my character to have some as well, otherwise that would just be weird to me. Lack of boobs would be masculine.
This appears feminine to me:
This is just awkward and weird. Not even good art and lacking talent .It is distorted and doesn;t even look like a person:
Anime is a pretty broad term. Some look more realistic than others. And some anime might be Emo but a lot of it isn't. Here is a lady from "Black lagoon"
I still feel that is lacking detail. Yes, it is more tolerable than most, but the head still seems weird. A different head and I might be able to stand it. LOL It is the facial details that annoy me.
Where is her flippin nose? People HAVE noses! LOL

I'm sorry I had to do it.......

Oopsie daisy....lol....did wittle ol' me make a lingo faux pas? LMAO
